Archaeology cannot prove the Bible is true, and it does not disprove it either. What it can do is test specific claims: whether a city existed, whether a ruler held a certain office, whether a text existed in written form by a certain date. Tested that way, the Bible keeps getting small things right, details its writers had no particular reason to get right. That does not prove the faith. It does weaken the case of the videos that say the Bible was invented by people who did not know the world they described.
That answer comes from Erika Brown, who studies the archaeology of the Bible with an emphasis on Israel’s early Scriptures. She has worked a month-long excavation in Israel and makes a video series for people who first meet these questions online. Brown is direct about what her field can and cannot do. Her case is worth following one claim at a time.
What Would Archaeology Need to Find to Settle the Question?
Start with the field itself. Brown describes archaeology as the study of things left behind by people from a long time ago, recovered so we can learn about the people who left them. Most people picture something like the Colosseum. The actual work, she says, is mostly smaller, and mostly pottery: “It’s a lot more pottery than anything else.”
That definition sets limits on what the evidence can show. A potsherd can tell you when people lived in a place, what they ate and how they built their houses. It cannot tell you whether God spoke to Moses. An inscription can confirm that a governor held office. It cannot confirm that the man he sentenced rose from the dead.
So the useful question is whether the Bible’s concrete, checkable claims fit the material record. If the biblical writers were careless inventors working far from the events, you would expect errors: wrong names, wrong titles, wrong customs, a geography that does not match the ground. If they were close to the events, or drew on sources that were, you would expect the small details to hold up when checked.
Brown’s own dig shows what this kind of checking looks like. She worked at Gezer, a site she notes is mentioned as a gift from Pharaoh to King Solomon (1 Kings 9:16). Her team found animal bones, the remains of houses and administrative buildings. Gezer also has a gate that excavators connect with Solomon because, as Brown explains, it dates to about that period, and gates of this kind appear mainly at places Solomon would have ruled. None of this is dramatic. It is the background material that, she points out, commentators rely on when they explain what a passage meant in its own time.
Why Do Small Details Matter More Than Big Ones?
Brown’s main claim is about the size of what archaeology confirms. “The Bible’s been so accurate on the smallest details, like it’s just impressive.” She adds that “sometimes the Bible’s accurate about things. It doesn’t have to be accurate about,” details that would neither make nor break the story.
Her reasoning runs like this. A writer inventing a religious story has every reason to get the big theological claims across and much less reason to get a governor’s rank, a tomb style or a regional water problem right. Those details belong to the daily life of a specific time and place. When they check out, Brown takes it as a sign that the writer knew the world being described.
The argument has a real limit, and it should be stated. Accurate background does not, on its own, date a text or prove an eyewitness. A later author can research a setting, inherit older sources or simply live in a region where the customs had not changed much. What accurate detail does show is that the writer was not careless or ignorant about the world. A skeptic who claims the Bible’s writers did not know their own setting has to deal with that. A skeptic who grants the setting but disputes the events has not yet been answered by it.
Brown’s example from Exodus shows how far this kind of argument can carry. The Pharaoh who confronts Moses is never named. Later, in the books of Kings, Pharaohs start to be named (for example, Pharaoh Necho in 2 Kings 23:29). Brown reports that Egyptologists have matched this to a common pattern in the period, and says the Bible follows it. Readers should hold this one loosely. It is her summary of other scholars’ work, and it is an argument from silence: an unnamed king fits several explanations, including a writer’s choice to keep the focus on God rather than on Egypt’s ruler. At most it shows the text is consistent with its claimed setting.
What Do the Specific Finds Actually Show?
Brown points to several pieces of evidence. They answer different skeptical claims, and each carries its own limit.
The Amulets From Ketef Hinnom
Many scholars argue that the first five books of the Bible were written much later than tradition holds. Brown describes small amulets found in the 1970s that carry the priestly blessing from Numbers 6:24: “The LORD bless thee, and keep thee.” She dates them to about the sixth or seventh century BC. She contrasts that with the Dead Sea Scrolls, which she places no earlier than about the first or second century BC.
Her conclusion is careful. “I’m not saying it’s like concrete proof or anything,” she says. Her point is that at least some portion of the text existed in writing earlier than the late-dating theories allow. One blessing on an amulet does not date the whole of Genesis through Deuteronomy. It does show that a phrase from that collection was already circulating in written form at an early date, which a theory of very late composition has to explain.
The Pilate Stone
Brown says that for a long time some researchers thought Pontius Pilate was fictitious, or that the biblical writers had his role wrong. Then a stone was found bearing his name and his rank, and in her account the rank matches what the Bible says. The Gospels identify him as “Pontius Pilate the governor” (Matthew 27:2).
The stone is silent about the trial of Jesus. What it settles is a narrower dispute: a man by that name held that kind of office, as the Gospels describe. A skeptic who built an argument on Pilate being invented has lost that argument.
The Megiddo Prayer Hall
Brown says she often hears lately that calling Jesus God was a post-Constantine development. She answers with a mosaic floor at Megiddo, in what she describes as a Roman soldiers’ setting, which in her words says it is “dedicated to Jesus Christ our God.” She dates it to the third century AD, before Constantine.
Two features of her argument deserve attention. First, she does not claim the mosaic is the only evidence. She notes that church historians already show belief in Christ’s deity before Constantine. The mosaic adds a different kind of witness: physical, local and not written as theology. Second, she stresses the setting. It sits in a Roman military context, outside any synagogue and far from any treatise, and a group of believers there called Jesus God on their floor. A claim that the doctrine was imposed from the top down after Constantine has to account for ordinary believers saying it in stone first.
Scrolls, Quail and Bitter Water
Brown also cites the Dead Sea Scrolls, which by her account include fragments of almost every book of the Hebrew Scriptures except Esther, and a complete Isaiah scroll dated to about 150 BC. Since Christians draw much of their prophecy about Christ from Isaiah, the date matters: the text of Isaiah existed before Jesus was born. That point is narrower than it may look. It rules out the idea that Isaiah was written after the fact to match Jesus. It does not settle the separate dispute over whether the Gospel writers shaped their account of Jesus to fit Isaiah, or how Isaiah’s prophecies should be read.
Her most unusual examples come from the wilderness accounts. She says there are two quail migration patterns in the Sinai region, and the account of quail in the southern Sinai matches one of them. She also describes a researcher studying groundwater near the boundary between Egypt and Sinai, where water picks up sulfur and turns bitter, which fits the complaint about bitter water in Exodus 15:23. These come from Brown’s report of other people’s research and should be checked against that research directly. They illustrate her pattern: details a writer had little reason to get right.
Where Does the Evidence Run Out?
Brown does not hide the gaps. “There are hard things that we do in research,” she says. For readers who want to go further, she recommends Kenneth Kitchen, an Egyptologist and a believer, on the reliability of Israel’s early Scriptures, warning that it is data-heavy. She also praises a survey of the archaeology of the early church for presenting why some scholars think a given find helps biblical study and why others think it does not. In her words, “Scholars are going back and forth about it.”
The first limit is that matching details do not prove miracles. A historical novel can get its streets and its rulers right and still be fiction. Accurate details bear on whether the writers knew their world. They cannot, by themselves, confirm the supernatural claims those writers make.
The second limit is that the resurrection is where archaeology has the least to say. Asked directly for archaeological evidence for the resurrection, Brown answers, “I don’t know if there’s any for the resurrection per se.” What she offers is evidence about the burial. She says the style of tomb Jesus is described as buried in appears in two periods only: the late period of Israel’s kings, and again from about 100 BC until the fall of the temple in AD 70, after which, she says, it disappears. Her argument is that the burial story fits its time, which counts against theories that the account was invented much later.
That argument speaks to the age of the burial tradition, not to what happened inside the tomb. Brown also says that everybody agrees the tomb was empty. That is her assertion. Skeptics who reject the resurrection do not all grant it, so the claim should not be repeated as settled fact. The tomb-style evidence stands on its own without that overstatement.
The third limit is that absence of evidence is common in archaeology, and it cuts both ways. Most of the ancient world was never excavated, and most of what was left has decayed. A viral video that treats a missing find as proof the Bible is false makes the same mistake as a sermon that treats a single find as proof it is true.
So Where Does Faith Stand if Archaeology Cannot Prove It?
Brown is firm on this point: “I don’t want people to think that you need archaeology to have faith in Christ.” She puts it more bluntly: “The Bible doesn’t stand on archaeology.”
She uses an ordinary comparison: “I know my mom’s my mom, but it’s always cool when I saw my birth certificate or some document.” The certificate did not make the relationship real, and losing it would not end the relationship. “It just builds on those things.” The comparison has a limit. A birth certificate is direct evidence of exactly the fact in question, while a tomb style or an inscription confirms only the setting around the central claims. Still, it captures the order she wants to keep: trust comes first, and evidence strengthens it.
That order also clarifies what Christians can honestly say to a skeptic. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, discussing these finds with Brown, puts the apologetic point simply: the evidence helps people see “this isn’t just some made-up story.” That is the right size of claim. Archaeology will not carry anyone to faith. It can remove specific false objections: that Pilate was invented, that the Pentateuch could not have existed early in any form, that Christ’s deity was a later invention.
Brown started her videos because the online claims her goddaughter kept asking about rarely had any response. “People are learning on videos. We need another perspective,” she says. She is just as clear about the limit of that response: “I can’t force you to believe in Christ.” The goal is a better-informed decision.
The culture Brown studies also shows how unusual Israel’s God was. Everyone around Israel had many gods, and this God demanded no rivals and no images (Exodus 20:3–4). Knowing that world, she argues, shows how countercultural the command was and how real the people who received it were. That may be archaeology’s most lasting service to the reader: it puts the Bible back among real people in a real world, where its claims can be weighed for what they are.
