Archaeological evidence can strengthen your trust in the Bible. It cannot carry that trust by itself. A find can show that the Bible describes a real world accurately. It cannot show that God spoke, that miracles happened, or that Jesus rose. If you expect the next dig to give you permission to believe, you have put your weight on something that was never built to hold it.
The guide works on one question: what role should this kind of evidence play in faith, and what happens when you ask it to do too much? Alone, plan on about an hour. A group can use one long session or split it at the objection section. You need a Bible, paper and a pen. The exercises ask you to sort claims, map an argument and name what would change your mind. Write your answers before you discuss them.
Begin with your own expectation
Finish this sentence in writing: If archaeology found something that clearly contradicted the Bible, I would…
Then a second one: If archaeology confirmed every place and person in the Bible, I would…
If the first answer is “stop believing” and the second is “never doubt again,” archaeology has become the judge of your faith. If both answers are “nothing would change,” evidence may have become irrelevant to you. Most people land between those two. This study is about finding where you are and whether that place makes sense.
For groups: keep these sentences private for now. People will revisit them at the end, and some will want to revise them without an audience.
Two words that carry the whole argument
Much of the confusion comes from two words used loosely: proof and faith.
Proof can mean two things. In mathematics, a proof leaves no room for doubt. In ordinary life, “proof” means evidence strong enough that doubting would be unreasonable, though still possible. A receipt proves you bought the shoes in that second sense.
Erika Brown, who studies the archaeology of the Bible, is careful here. Describing small amulets carrying the priestly blessing from Numbers 6:24, which she dates to the sixth or seventh century BC, she says, “I’m not saying it’s like concrete proof or anything.” Her claim is narrower: some portion of that text existed in written form earlier than certain scholars have argued.
Lisa Fields, talking with Brown, uses the word in its everyday sense. She says the finds help people see “this isn’t just some made up story.” She is describing the removal of an objection. She and Brown are using one word at two strengths, and a reader who misses that can hear either too much or too little.
Faith needs the same care. Faith is trust in someone. Trust can have reasons behind it and still reach past what those reasons strictly establish. You trust a friend’s promise because of their track record, yet the record does not guarantee the next promise.
What Scripture assumes about seeing and believing
Read these five passages before reading any comment on them. For each, write one sentence answering: What does this passage assume about the relationship between seeing and believing?
- Hebrews 11:1
- John 20:24-29
- Luke 1:1-4
- 1 Thessalonians 5:21
- 1 Corinthians 15:3-14
Now compare your sentences with these observations.
Hebrews 11:1 reads, “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The KJV uses the word “evidence” for faith itself. Translators differ on that word. Some render it as conviction, an inner assurance. Others keep a sense closer to proof or demonstration. The verse on its own does not settle how faith and evidence relate, so be cautious about building your whole view on it.
In John 20, Thomas refuses to believe until he sees. Jesus shows him the wounds, and then says in John 20:29, “Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” Jesus answers the request for evidence. He also declines to make seeing the highest form of faith.
Luke describes careful research so that his reader may “know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed” (Luke 1:4). Investigation here supports trust in what someone has already been taught.
Paul writes, “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21). The KJV’s word prove means test. Testing is commanded.
Paul also writes, “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain” (1 Corinthians 15:14). Keep this verse close. The strongest objection below depends on it.
For groups: if your sentences disagree with these observations, discuss that first. The goal is close reading, and a well-argued disagreement with the notes is a better outcome than quiet agreement.
Brown’s position, laid out step by step
Brown’s view is easy to summarize and easy to misread. Here it is reconstructed as an argument, in her words where she gives them.
- Christian faith is trust in Christ. In Brown’s words, “we start with faith.”
- That faith does not depend on archaeological finds. “I don’t want people to think that you need archeology to have faith in Christ,” she says, and “the Bible doesn’t stand on archeology.”
- Archaeology can confirm details of the world the Bible describes. Brown observes, “The Bible’s been so accurate on the smallest details.”
- Confirmation of this kind strengthens trust that already exists. She compares it to a document about her mother: “I know my mom’s my mom, but it’s always cool when I saw my birth certificate or some document.” Her conclusion: “It just builds on those things.”
- So archaeology supports faith without replacing it. “I don’t want ’em to think that this replaces faith.”
Test the analogy before you lean on it. Brown knew her mother before she saw the certificate, and the certificate confirmed what she already had good reason to believe. That part fits.
Here is where it breaks. A birth certificate is direct evidence for exactly the fact in question. An inscription naming Pontius Pilate is direct evidence that a man by that name held that office, and it is silent on whether the man he sentenced rose from the dead. Archaeology usually confirms the setting around the Bible’s central claims. Keep the analogy’s lesson about the order of trust and evidence, and drop the assumption that every find works like a birth certificate.
The question people forget to ask
Before asking whether evidence supports a claim, ask what kind of claim it is. Some claims leave physical traces. Others leave none.
Sort each item into one of three columns: archaeology can test this directly, archaeology bears on this indirectly, or archaeology cannot test this. Every item comes from claims Brown discusses.
- A Roman governor named Pontius Pilate held the rank the Gospels give him.
- The words of the priestly blessing in Numbers 6:24 were written down earlier than some scholars propose.
- Believers called Jesus God before the time of Constantine.
- Jesus was buried in a tomb of a style used in his time.
- Jesus rose from the dead.
- The God of Israel demanded worship without images, unlike the nations around Israel.
- That God actually exists and spoke to Moses.
Notice where you hesitated. The fourth and fifth items teach the most. Brown is candid that the resurrection itself sits outside her field’s reach: “I don’t know if there’s any for the resurrection per se.” What she offers is the tomb style, which she argues fits the period the Gospels describe. That bears on whether the burial account comes from the right time. It is silent on what happened inside the tomb afterward.
The sixth item deserves a second look. Archaeology can show what Israel’s neighbors practiced and how unusual Israel’s command was by comparison. Whether the command came from God is a separate question. Brown’s interest in this kind of evidence is about how it helps people read: “It makes it more relevant and it makes it more real.”
The strongest objection
Here is the serious challenge. If faith comes first and does not stand on archaeology, evidence starts to look like decoration. You believe anyway, and the finds are pleasant extras. Yet Paul says that if Christ did not rise, faith is vain. He ties Christian faith to an event in history. A faith no historical evidence could touch would be a different faith from the one Paul describes.
The objection is right that Christian faith is exposed to history. The resurrection is a claim about what happened in space and time.
It does not defeat Brown’s view once you see her actual claim. She says faith does not stand on archaeology, one kind of evidence. History also reaches us through testimony. In 1 Corinthians 15:5-8, Paul lists people the risen Christ appeared to: Cephas, the twelve, more than five hundred at once, James, all the apostles, and finally Paul himself. His case rests on witnesses. Testimony has its own burdens, though. A reader still has to ask whether the witnesses were in a position to know, whether they could be mistaken, and whether their accounts were preserved faithfully. Moving from excavation to testimony changes the kind of evidence. You still have to weigh it.
The same reasoning protects you from the other side. Most of the ancient world has never been excavated, and most of what people left has decayed. A missing find usually tells you very little. A video that treats an absence as proof the Bible is false repeats the error of a sermon that treats one find as proof it is true.
One more test. Brown says, about the tomb, that “we all agree the tomb’s empty.” Many historians accept the empty tomb, but people who reject the resurrection do not all grant it. Because testimony must be weighed, this premise needs an argument before you use it with a skeptic. Brown’s tomb-style point stands without it, so stating it carefully costs you nothing.
For groups: if you are splitting the study, end the first session here. If someone in the room doubts the faith, invite them to state the objection in their own words before anyone answers it.
What would change your mind?
This is the practice for the week. Choose one specific claim about the Bible you have seen online or heard from a friend: a person who supposedly never existed, a city supposedly never found, a belief supposedly invented later. Brown began her video work for this reason. Her goddaughter kept bringing her claims from social media, and no one was answering them: “people are learning on videos. We need another perspective.”
- State the claim in one sentence, as fairly as its strongest defender would.
- Write what evidence you would expect if the claim were true, and what you would expect if it were false.
- Look for that evidence in a careful source. Brown recommends Kenneth Kitchen’s On the Reliability of the Old Testament, while warning that it is data-heavy. She values books that show both sides, because “scholars are going back and forth about it.”
- Write what the evidence you found establishes, and then what it leaves unestablished.
- Answer honestly: what evidence would lead you to change your view on this claim? If your answer is “nothing could,” ask whether you hold a reasoned position or a fixed one.
Brown frames her aim modestly. She does not promise to argue anyone into belief: “let me give you the opposite side so that you can make a better informed decision.” Step five holds you to that same standard.
For groups: when people report back, take step four before step five. Separating what was shown from what was not is the skill this study builds. Some will find their claim weaker than they thought, on either side. Treat that as a success.
Questions for discussion
- When Brown says “the Bible doesn’t stand on archeology,” what does she think the Bible does stand on? Defend your answer from what she says.
- Where does the birth certificate comparison help, and where does it mislead? Can you think of a comparison that fits archaeological evidence more closely?
- Jesus gave Thomas evidence and then blessed those who believe without seeing. Is asking for evidence a lesser form of faith? What in John 20 supports your reading?
- Which item in the sorting exercise was hardest to place, and why?
- Brown says, “There are hard things that we do in research.” What would it look like to face a genuinely difficult find honestly, without explaining it away or giving up?
- Paul points to witnesses in 1 Corinthians 15:5-8. What questions would you ask of that testimony before relying on it?
Return to where you started
Reread your two opening sentences.
Suppose you wrote that a contradicting find would end your faith. Consider which claim that find would actually touch. Most finds bear on the setting.
Suppose you wrote that full confirmation would end all doubt. No number of confirmed cities can confirm a resurrection, so that hope was aimed at the wrong kind of evidence.
Suppose you wrote that nothing would change either way. Paul thought something could make faith vain, and that deserves an answer from you.
Rewrite either sentence if you need to. Then carry a sharper question than whether archaeology proves the Bible: which of your beliefs rest on evidence you can examine, which rest on testimony you have reasons to trust, and how do the two work together?
