Christianity and Islam agree on one sentence about God: there is only one God, uncreated, and greater than anything else. After that sentence, the two scriptures part ways. The Quran denies that God is three persons, denies that God became a man, and denies that Jesus was crucified. Those denials decide whether anyone can carry another person’s sin, so the disagreement runs all the way down to how a person is saved.
That is the conclusion Abdu Murray reaches. He was raised Muslim in the United States, took his faith seriously, and remained a Muslim until he was 27, after a nine-year investigation that ended with his turning to Christ in 2000. He knows both texts from the inside. The comparison that follows does not rest on his biography, though. It can be checked against what each scripture affirms and denies.
What would it take for the answer to be yes?
If two communities worship the same God, their scriptures should agree on who that God is, what he is like, and what he has done about human sin. Differences of style or emphasis would not settle much. Contradictions at the center would. So the test here is simple: compare what each book says about God, about Jesus, and about salvation, and see where they meet and where they split.
Where do the Quran and the Bible actually agree?
Start with the real agreement. Murray puts it plainly: “The Quran teaches that there is only one God. He is the only uncreated being that there ever was, and he is the greatest possible being. So far, I think every Christian would agree that the Bible teaches the exact same thing, but there are some differences.”
The Bible says the same in its own terms. Deuteronomy 6:4 reads, “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD.” Christians have never believed in three gods. Both faiths reject idols and polytheism and confess a single Creator who owes his existence to nothing.
Even the name points to overlap. Murray explains that the Arabic word Allah “literally means the God. So it’s not actually a name, it’s, um, a title.” When a Muslim says Allah, the word does not name a separate deity. Whatever the disagreement turns out to be, it is not in the label.
This is the strongest evidence for the “same God” answer, and Murray does not brush it aside. He frames Christianity as the fuller answer to what Muslims are already seeking, arguing that the greatest possible being Muslims are looking for “can be found and found fully in the Bible.”
Where does the shared sentence end?
The first break comes over God’s own being. A Muslim, Murray says, would call it blasphemy to say that God, though one in his nature, is three in his persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
The second break follows from the first. “The Quran says that it’s blasphemous essentially to say that Jesus is God, that God would ever become incarnate and condescend to be, um, a human being,” Murray says. In the Quran’s account, God would never do that and has never done it.
The Bible says he did. John 1:14 reads, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” John presents this as the central fact about who Jesus is. The Quran names the same claim as blasphemy. Here the two texts do more than describe God differently. They contradict each other.
Murray’s summary is measured: “there are some superficial similarities, but there are some fundamental differences theologically speaking. And I think those differences make a difference.” He grants the overlap. He denies that it reaches deep enough to settle the question.
Why does the Trinity carry so much weight?
A reader might still ask why a hard-to-explain teaching about persons should decide anything, if both faiths worship the one Creator.
Murray’s answer is that the Trinity holds the rest of Christian belief together. He traces the chain: “Because without an incarnation, you can’t have an atonement. Without an atonement, you can’t have salvation in Christianity, and the Trinity makes sense of this.” The Quran, he adds, denies all of these things.
He makes the logic concrete. On the cross, he argues, the Son makes a payment to the Father. Father and Son share one essence, but “they’re different personhoods, so the payment is real.” Without that distinction there would be no real exchange. “It’s not just putting money in your right pocket from your left pocket,” he says. The one who pays must also be both human and divine: human to stand in for human beings, divine because the substitute has to be perfect.
The limit of this argument should be stated. It shows that Christian doctrines depend on one another, so a Christian cannot drop the Trinity and keep the cross. It does not show by itself that the Quran is wrong. A Muslim can accept that the Christian system hangs together and still reject its starting point, and Islam does reject the idea of a substitute on principle, as the next section shows. What the argument does establish is narrower but important for this question: the Trinity cannot be treated as a detachable extra. Disagreement about it is disagreement about the whole Christian account of God.
Did Jesus die on a cross?
The third break is historical. Murray points to the fourth chapter of the Quran, which he recites in Arabic and then translates: “They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him, but it looked like it to them or appeared to them as if it was so.”
Muslim interpreters have explained the phrase about appearance in more than one way. Some hold that another person was made to look like Jesus and died in his place. Others read it differently. Those differences matter for understanding Islam, but they do not change the verse’s main claim. On every reading, Jesus was not killed and was not crucified.
The New Testament says he was. Paul states what hangs on it. In 1 Corinthians 15:17 he writes, “And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.” Murray agrees: if you kept every other historical claim of Christianity and lost this one, you would have no Christian faith left. “The resurrection is the centerpiece of the Christian faith.”
Accounts that disagree about what an event meant can still share the event. These two disagree about whether it happened. One of them is mistaken about the central act Christians attribute to God.
Which one is a historical question, and it needs historical evidence. An investigator would want to know which accounts are earliest, how close they stand to the events, and whether sources outside the church confirm the execution. Murray does not walk through that evidence in this conversation. He calls the crucifixion a fundamental historical fact and argues more broadly that the Bible’s history has held up under centuries of critical scrutiny, but here those remain his assertions. This article does not weigh the historical case. It establishes something smaller and certain: the two scriptures cannot both be right about Jesus’ death, and the answer to the title question depends on which is.
How does each faith say a person is saved?
The disagreement about God and Jesus produces a disagreement about salvation. In orthodox Islam, Murray says, God reveals his will through the Quran and his messengers, but “Allah does not reveal himself intimately.” The relationship is one of master and servant: “He is the master, we are the slave.” The word Islam means submission, and a Muslim is one who submits.
On sin, Murray describes a scale. If a person’s good works outweigh the bad, that person goes to heaven. If not, hell. God is merciful, but in Murray’s account the believer must earn that mercy through good words and deeds. “Essentially, it’s a works-based system,” he says. “And there is no savior, by the way.”
He grounds this in a Quranic principle he renders in English: “No bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another.” Each person carries his or her own sin.
A fair qualification belongs here. This is a former insider’s summary of orthodox Islam, and Murray himself notes that some forms of Islam teach that God reveals himself more intimately. A devout Muslim might stress God’s mercy more than this summary does. The denial of the incarnation and the crucifixion, though, is in the Quran’s own text.
The Bible answers that someone else does carry our sin. First Peter 2:24 says of Christ, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree.” Second Corinthians 5:21 says, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” In the Christian account, salvation is a gift received by trust.
Is the burden verse a wall or a door?
Murray’s most original observation comes at this point. The Quranic principle seems to shut out any savior. Murray accepts the principle and asks what follows from it.
The reasoning turns on an assumption inside the principle. Every burden-bearer already has a load of his own and so has no room for anyone else’s. That is true of every ordinary person. The New Testament claims it is not true of Jesus, who was tempted in every way yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15). If that claim holds, the principle explains why only a sinless person could be a substitute.
Murray calls this a bridge to the gospel. It works by taking a Muslim’s belief seriously and following it further, which treats a Muslim friend with more respect than either avoiding the subject or dismissing the Quran outright.
Isn’t it one God, misunderstood?
The strongest objection goes like this. Both faiths intend the one Creator. Allah is the Arabic word for God, and Arabic-speaking Christians use it in prayer. Someone who gets important facts wrong about a person is still talking about that person. So perhaps Muslims worship the true God with a mistaken picture of him.
Part of this is right. There is only one God, and both scriptures direct their readers toward the one Creator. Murray’s own claim that Christianity reveals the God Muslims are searching for assumes a real point of contact.
The objection has a limit, though. A wrong detail about someone is different from a wrong answer about what he is and what he did. The Quran does not simply omit the Trinity, the incarnation and the cross. It rejects them, and in the Bible those are how God has made himself known and how he saves. When one scripture calls blasphemy what the other calls God’s self-revelation, they are giving contradictory accounts of the same subject. Both faiths aim at the one God in the sense that there is only one to aim at. They disagree about who he is, whether he became flesh, and whether he went to a cross. Respect for Muslims means hearing that disagreement as seriously as they do.
What would settle it?
Murray does not stop at naming the contradiction. He asks which account has adequate warrant: whether God is Trinitarian, whether Jesus was God in the flesh, whether he died on a cross and paid the debt, and whether he rose. If those claims hold up, he argues, “you have a strong implication that the Christian faith, specifically as it describes God and history in the Bible, is uniquely true and worthy of our allegiance.”
That moves the question from vocabulary to evidence. The two books cannot both describe God truly, because they disagree about what God did in history. If Jesus was crucified and raised, God did what the Quran says he would never do. If he was not, Christianity fails on the terms Paul set. The question of which God is real finally turns on a death and an empty grave, and that is where anyone who wants an answer has to look.
