The apostle Paul called himself a Hebrew, so the label alone cannot disqualify a Christian. A person can identify as ethnically Hebrew and still be a faithful Christian, as long as the claim stays a claim about ancestry. What a Christian cannot hold is the teaching, common in the street camps that made the name famous, that salvation belongs to one bloodline. That teaching contradicts the gospel itself. Christian battle rapper Street Hymns lives on one side of that line and argues against the other side in public.

He calls himself Hebrew, calls himself a Christian, and calls the camp message heresy without hedging. Those three positions only look inconsistent if “Hebrew Israelite” names a single thing. It doesn’t.

Two Things Sharing One Name

Street Hymns starts with definitions, and he admits it is a habit. He describes himself as a skeptic and a literal person who wants terms settled before an argument begins, because two people using one word for different things are having two conversations. His definition is short: “Hebrew is ethnicity, not religion.” He follows it to its logical end: “you can be a Hebrew atheist.”

He grounds the term in Scripture. Paul describes himself this way:

“Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee” (Philippians 3:5).

Street Hymns’s point is that the apostles were Hebrew Israelites in the plainest sense, and nobody thinks that made their faith suspect. A label for a people can’t be heresy by itself.

The other use of the term is a theological program. Street Hymns describes the version most people picture: people of color who identify as Hebrew and, on that basis, yell at white passersby, use slurs, and promise that the outsiders will someday bow. His verdict on that: “first of all, that’s not biblical. That’s heresy and it’s offensive.”

He also refuses to treat every person in the movement as interchangeable. Speaking of the groups he debates, he says, “I don’t try to generalize it,” and he says he won’t know what any given person believes until he is in front of them. That restraint matters. A movement can be wrong at its core and still contain people at very different distances from that core.

What the Ancestry Claim Rests On, and What It Cannot Carry

Street Hymns did not reach his identity through a sermon. “It was first historical and then ancestral,” he says. He points to several lines of evidence:

• The slave trade’s origins. He says the Atlantic slave trade began in Spain and Portugal.
• Names in the records. He says many names recorded on slave ship documents carry a “Ya” element.
• A church in Savannah. He describes First African Baptist Church in Savannah, Georgia, which he says enslaved people built in 1859, with writing on the pews that he describes as a mix of Hebrew and Latin. He adds that Hebrew as a spoken language was not revived until around 1881, so he asks who taught the builders to write it.

His own ancestors, he says, built that church, and he attended family reunions there as a child. They called themselves Hebrews, so he does too.

Readers should hold this evidence for what it is. These are his historical assertions, offered in a conversation, and the transcript establishes that he made them, not that each one is accurate. The dates, the meaning of the pew inscriptions, the significance of names in shipping records and the link between those records and ancient Israel are all questions for historians and genealogists. Even if every claim held, moving from Hebrew lettering on pews built by enslaved people in Savannah to the conclusion that their descendants are the biological tribes of Israel is a long step, and the evidence he lists does not by itself close it.

For the theological question, this matters less than it first seems. Genealogy is a question of fact that Christians can investigate and disagree about without either side leaving the faith. It becomes a theological problem only when someone makes salvation depend on the answer. Street Hymns does not.

His observation about the history books carries weight apart from the genealogy. He objects to the lesson he grew up with, that enslaved Africans arrived illiterate. If he traveled to Asia, he says, he would not be illiterate either. He would just not know the language. People taken from their homes arrived with languages, names and histories. That point stands whatever anyone concludes about Israelite descent.

Where the Camp Theology Breaks With the Gospel

When Street Hymns argues with camp preachers, he names the core error directly: they teach that salvation is exclusive to the Jews, or in the version he describes elsewhere, exclusive to Black people or people claiming to be Hebrew. His answer is five words: “The gospel is for everyone.”

His best argument comes from the covenant itself. In Genesis 17, God commands Abraham to circumcise the servants born in his house and those bought with money, not only his biological descendants. Exodus 12 makes room for the circumcised stranger to keep the Passover. Street Hymns observes that the covenant community was mixed from the start, and he calls those servants “the first Hebrews” in the sense that they belonged to the covenant. If people outside Abraham’s bloodline were inside the covenant from the beginning, a bloodline gate was never the design.

He also sees the camp argument as an old one. The dispute Paul fought in his letters was whether God’s blessing belonged only to the Jew. In Street Hymns’s words, “it’s not a new fight. That’s literally what Paul was attacking the entire time he was writing the letters.” The New Testament supports that reading:

• The gospel “is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek” (Romans 1:16).
• “There is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him” (Romans 10:12).
• “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:28).

Galatians does not erase ethnicity. Paul still calls himself a Hebrew of the Hebrews. What the passage removes is ethnicity as the ground of standing before God. A teaching that makes descent the condition of salvation is not a cultural variation on the gospel. It replaces it. That is why the word heresy fits, and why Street Hymns uses it.

Why the Identity Claim Lands

Dismissing everyone drawn to Hebrew identity as confused would be easy and wrong. Street Hymns names what he sees underneath it: “identity was stripped from us, and it was done intentionally.”

His analysis is broader than his own movement. He describes a hunger in the Black community for a name and a story, and he lists several sources that answer it: messages that say we were kings, that we are gods, or that make some grand claim about the Black man. Any of them, he says, can feel better than a term like African American, because each tells a person they are more than their circumstances have told them. He places his own Hebrew identity inside that same search, while separating it from the movements that turn the search into self-deification or supremacy.

That observation is specific. It concerns a particular historical injury, the deliberate destruction of names, languages and family records under slavery, and the vacuum it left. It does not claim that all Black people think one way. Street Hymns’s own setting shows the variety: in his Bible study group, he says, most members do not identify as Hebrew. He also says many people in pulpits and in Christian hip hop privately identify as Hebrew without saying so. That is his impression, not a measured fact, but it suggests the identity is more widespread and more varied than the street corner implies.

What the Identity Did to His Faith

If the label settles nothing, the question becomes what the identity did to the person’s faith. Street Hymns applies that test to himself. Claiming a Hebrew identity, he says, “hasn’t changed too much of my theological aspects.” He still belongs to a local church, still pushes the gospel, and still studies Scripture with a group. He asks people to watch his life before judging it: “I would rather you see the fruit before you judge the tree.” His summary of himself is plain: “I’m fully a Christian. I’m fully a follower of the way.”

He does report one real change, and it deserves more scrutiny than his reassurance gives it. Promises and commands addressed to the people of God now read to him as being about “us” and “we” rather than other people far away. That is exactly where a Hebrew identity could start to carry spiritual weight. If “us” means descendants of Israel by blood, then Gentile believers become, at best, guests at someone else’s table, and the passages that belong to the whole church get divided by ancestry.

Scripture sets the limit here:

“And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:29).

On Paul’s terms, a Gentile believer in Christ reads those promises as “us” with exactly the same right as anyone with Hebrew ancestry. Christians read the relationship between Israel and the church in different faithful ways, and that broader question stays open. What does not stay open is whether descent gives one believer a closer claim to Christ than another.

The evidence Street Hymns offers about himself fits the safe reading. He ties his practice to Christ, saying “sacrificial laws obviously don’t apply because we have the ultimate sacrifice in Christ,” and he treats his study of Leviticus as learning holiness, not earning standing. But the transcript cannot show that every Hebrew-identified reader keeps that line, and the “us and we” reading is the place to watch.

He also mentions keeping the Sabbath. Faithful Christians hold several positions on how the law of Moses applies today, and Sabbath practice is one place they differ. It becomes a gospel problem only when it is treated as a condition of salvation or a marker of who is really inside.

The Strongest Objection

A thoughtful critic could press the point further. Even if Street Hymns rejects bloodline salvation, doesn’t any claim to be the true Israel quietly invite a ranking among believers, with descendants slightly closer to the center?

The concern is fair, and the answer depends on what a person does with the claim. Galatians 3 leaves no tiers inside the body of Christ. If Hebrew identity gives someone a sense of rank over Gentile believers, it has moved into the error Paul opposed, even without any explicit bloodline doctrine. Street Hymns appears to see the risk. He says collaboration and unity within diversity are what the gospel is about, and he treats the camps’ contempt for white people as offensive and unbiblical, not as an excess of zeal.

The Jude 3 Project keeps a clear order here: before we are Black, before any other adjective, we are Christian. That order is the practical test for the objection. An ethnic claim held beneath it can be part of how a person understands their history. An ethnic claim that sits above it has become the real gospel.

Street Hymns names the opposite failure too. He has had people respond to his ethnic claim by suggesting he was never saved. “You’re challenging my salvation based off of me claiming an ethnicity,” he says. His reply is that “people can be knowledgeable of who they are, who they were, and still be in Christ, because Christ is for all people.” Questioning someone’s salvation over ancestry alone repeats the camps’ mistake in reverse, because it treats ethnicity as decisive for faith.

That is also why Street Hymns reads Christian resources written against the movement without feeling targeted: “I don’t look at their work and say, that’s anti me,” because the bloodline teaching they attack is the one he rejects. When he argues on the street, he says, “debates are never for the person to be swayed. It’s for the audience.” The bystanders weighing what they hear are often the ones a clear answer can reach.

What the Church Owes the People Searching

The camps are not the only ones with something to answer for. Street Hymns describes people reaching for kings, gods and lost tribes because the names and records of their ancestors were taken on purpose. A church that responds only by refuting the bloodline doctrine has answered the heresy and ignored the wound.

The better response does both. It says plainly that no ancestry opens or closes the door into God’s family, and it takes seriously the work of recovering what slavery erased, from ship records to pews in Savannah. People who find their history honored inside the church have less reason to look for it from a megaphone that charges them the gospel as the price.
