A young man corners you after service. He has been watching videos all week, and he asks it straight: Are we the real Hebrews, the lost tribe, the people the Bible is actually about?
Here is the honest answer. Yes, Black people are all through the biblical story, from the very beginning. But the bigger claim at the center of the Hebrew Israelite movement, that every Black person descends from Israel and white people are the Edomites, does not hold up biblically or historically. Old Testament scholar Quonekuia Day and historian Vince Bantu walk through why, and why the question behind it still deserves a real answer.
Were There Black People Among the Biblical Hebrews?
Yes, and it is not a stretch. It is on the page. When Israel comes out of Egypt, the text says a “mixed multitude” went with them (Exodus 12:38). Other nations came out with them and were grafted into the people. Moses marries a Cushite woman (Numbers 12:1). Joseph marries an African woman who bears him two sons (Genesis 41:50–52). The official baptized in Acts 8 is named by his skin. Black people are not a footnote in Scripture. They are in the family from the start.
“Even if you didn’t believe there are any Black people connected to Israel at all, when they come out of Egypt, you have to admit, they come out mixed. They come out with other nations engrafted in them.” — Prof. Quonekuia Day
So the movement’s first instinct is not wrong. People who read their Bibles and never saw themselves in it were told a lie by the paintings, not by the text. The correction starts by agreeing with the part that is true.
What Color Were the Ancient Israelites?
Not European, and not one shade. Day puts it plainly. A people who lived for centuries in a hot, dry region near Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan would have been brown, and many of them dark. The blond, blue-eyed Jesus most of us grew up with is a later invention, not the look of the ancient Near East.
Bantu adds a detail from the language. The Greek word behind “Ethiopian” in Acts is not the name of a country. It means burnt-faced one, a person whose skin was darkened by the sun. Luke notices the man’s skin because it stood out to him.
“I think you’ll see all shades. You’d be hard pressed to see a very pale, white person in that group. This is not an issue in the Scriptures at all. It only is an issue today for us because of the racist world we live in.” — Prof. Quonekuia Day
Sit with that last line. The Bible is not anxious about skin color. We are. The anxiety is ours, handed down from a world that ranked people by it. The text simply describes a brown, Middle Eastern, African-adjacent people and moves on.
So Are All Black People the Descendants of the Hebrews?
No, and this is where the exclusive claim breaks. Presence is one thing. The movement says something much bigger: that all Black people are the Hebrews and white people are the Edomites. Day says that simply cannot be true. There were always other nations and other peoples in the story. You cannot fold an entire continent into a single bloodline. The math does not work, and neither does the history.
The deeper problem, though, is not historical. It is theological. If your standing with God rests on a physical trait, then everyone is in trouble, because everyone is flawed. A faith built on ancestry is a faith you can lose to a DNA test.
“If our relationship with God is based on some physical attribute, what a shame. If it’s about a color thing, we’re in a lot of mess, even if the color thing benefits me.” — Prof. Quonekuia Day
Here someone will push back, and fairly. The movement leans on Scripture, especially Deuteronomy 28, which lists curses for disobedience that sound a lot like the Middle Passage: slavery, ships, chains, a scattered people. Does that not prove the case? The Jude 3 Project scholars who have worked through that text say no, and they are specific about why. The reading takes a passage about ancient Israel and forces a modern map onto it. It treats some verses as literal prophecy and others as metaphor, picking whichever serves the conclusion.
“Prophecy is not a buffet; you don’t get to pick what is literal and what is metaphor.” — Jude 3 Project, Faith That Makes Sense study
That is the tell of a system built backward, from the answer it wants to the verses that fit. The emotional pull is real, and you should say so out loud. The method is what fails.
Why Is the Hebrew Israelite Movement Growing?
Because the church left a hunger unfed. Bantu notes the movement is not new. It traces back to William Crowdy, a formerly enslaved Army veteran, in the late 1800s. It rises and falls, and it is rising now because young Black people are asking who they are and not finding the answer at church.
“The one thing we find in common with lots of different religious movements in the Black community is looking for a sense of identity as Black and as people of African descent.” — Dr. Vince Bantu
Urban apologist Vocab Malone, who has spent years in these conversations, says the same thing from the street. He has noticed that the people drawn in are almost never outsiders to the faith.
“I’ve never met a Hebrew Israelite yet who didn’t grow up in the church. Every single one I met grew up in the church.” — Vocab Malone
Read that twice. These are church kids. They sat in the pews and heard the songs, and somewhere along the way nobody told them they bear the image of God or where their faith actually came from. Malone is blunt about what the movement is reaching for and where it goes wrong.
“This does touch upon a real sense of a loss of dignity and identity. And this is like this overreaction to try to get something back that can only be achieved through the gospel.” — Vocab Malone
The cost of the trade is not small. Malone points out that the package almost always comes with a denial of who Jesus is. The dignity is bought by giving up the Savior who actually secures it.
“There’s this main thesis, but then there’s all this other stuff that they almost always believe. The deity of Christ denigrated. He’s no longer fully God.” — Vocab Malone
What Is the Better Ground for Identity?
Ethnicity is a gift, not the foundation. D. A. Horton, who has taken part in these same conversations, refuses to throw Black identity out to win the argument. He holds it as God-given.
“God has sovereignly elected you to be the ethnicity you are.” — D. A. Horton
“Don’t idolize it, don’t ignore it, but at the same time celebrate it.” — D. A. Horton
That is the line the movement misses in one direction and a colorblind church misses in the other. Your Blackness is not an accident to apologize for, and it is not the rock to build your soul on. Horton even carries it into eternity. The healing of the nations (Revelation 22:2) does not erase ethnicity. It gathers it.
“So our ethnicity is gonna be present in the eternal state.” — D. A. Horton
Day brings it home pastorally, and this is the heart of the whole conversation. Our identity in America was shaped by slavery and oppression. Our identity in Christ runs further back than that, further back than Africa itself. And the gospel never required anyone to become Jewish first. Paul settled that fight in the first century. You come to the Jewish Messiah as you are.
“There are clearly going to be Black people who can come straight from where they are to Jesus Christ. You don’t have to be Jewish to receive the Jewish Messiah.” — Prof. Quonekuia Day
So when that young man corners you after service, you do not start by arguing. You start by agreeing with the true thing he is reaching for. He wants to know he matters, that his people are not erased, that the Bible is not a white book. All of that is right. Then you tell him the answer the movement gave him is too small. It will cost him Jesus to feel seen. And there is a way to be fully seen that costs him nothing, because it was already bought.
Quick Answers
- Were there Black people among the biblical Hebrews? Yes. The Exodus crowd was a mixed multitude, Moses married a Cushite, and Scripture names African and dark-skinned people throughout.
- Are all Black people descended from the Hebrews? No. There were always other nations and peoples. The claim that every Black person is an Israelite, and that white people are Edomites, does not hold up biblically or historically.
- What color were the ancient Israelites? Not European. Most would have looked Middle Eastern or brown, with darker shades present too, given the region.
- Does Deuteronomy 28 prove Black Americans are the true Israel? No. Jude 3 Project scholars say that reading forces a modern map onto an ancient text and picks which verses to take literally to fit the conclusion.
- Why is the Hebrew Israelite movement growing? Because of a real hunger for Black identity and dignity that the church often failed to feed. The people drawn in usually grew up in church.
- Do you have to be ethnically Jewish to belong to God? No. Paul taught that Gentiles come to the Jewish Messiah as they are, without becoming Jewish first.
This conversation aired on BibleScript*, a Jude 3 Project podcast on ancient African Christianity hosted by Dr. Vince Bantu.
