Nobody plans to be disappointed with God. It sneaks up on you. You prayed for the healing and went to the funeral anyway. You gave your best years to a church and still feel invisible. You did the right things in the right order, and your life fell apart on schedule. And somewhere in there a sentence forms that you would never say out loud in the lobby: I am not sure God came through for me.
If that is you, start here. Faith disappoints when the life you were promised does not match the life you got. The way through is not to bury that gap. It is to name it, take your questions and your anger straight to God, and refuse to pretend. Apologist Lisa Fields, who wrote a whole book on this, puts it plainly: wrestling is not the death of your faith. It is how faith grows. That is the short answer. The rest of this is why it is true and what to do with it.
Why does nobody at church talk about being let down by God?
Because we have decided that admitting it is the same as losing it. So the disappointment goes underground. People keep showing up, keep singing, and quietly stop believing God is good to them in particular. Fields says this is especially common in the Black community, where many grew up in church, walked away hurt, and now mostly hear about faith through scandal and politics. Hiding all of that does not protect anyone. It hands people a version of God so brittle it breaks the first time life gets hard.
"To only highlight the positive is to really give people a false sense of reality that will lead them only to greater disappointment." (Lisa Fields)
The obvious worry is that naming the pain will make it worse, that if you say the dark thing it becomes more real. It is the other way around. The unspoken disappointment is the dangerous one, because it never gets brought to God and never gets healed. What you can name, you can take somewhere. What you hide just sits there and rots the foundation.
What is 'the gap' between what you believe and what you experience?
Fields calls it the gap, and it is the heart of the whole thing. Scripture says God supplies your needs, but the bank account says otherwise. You were told he is a healer, and the person died. You poured your life into ministry and still feel unseen. Disappointment lives right there, in the space between what you believe about God and what you actually live. She names seven places it shows up: personhood, power, protection, provision, purpose, pleasure, and peace. Different doors, same room.
"There have been moments in my life where I felt deeply disappointed with God, and there are moments in my life where I felt deeply seen and known by God." (Lisa Fields)
Notice she does not resolve those two into one. She holds them at once. That is the part the tidy version of faith cannot do. It tells you that if you really trusted God you would not feel let down. Fields, and the Bible, tell you that the same heart can feel abandoned and held in the same week. The gap is not proof your faith failed. It is the place faith actually happens.
Is it a sin to wrestle with God or question him?
No, and the people who taught you it was did you no favors. Questioning God runs straight through the Bible. David asked how long the Lord would forget him. Jeremiah asked why the wicked prosper. On the cross, Jesus himself cried out and asked why God had forsaken him. If the sinless Son of God can ask that, your version is not an emergency. You do not have to fear offending God with your honesty. He already knows what is in your heart. Fields learned this the hard way in seminary, when she took her doubts to a respected professor and braced for a lecture. He just said, me too.
"Wrestling isn't the death of your faith. On the contrary, wrestling is the key to growing in your faith." (Lisa Fields)
Dr. Sarita Lyons, another Jude 3 voice on this, names what went wrong when we made questions the enemy.
"We have given people a faith that could not wrestle." (Dr. Sarita Lyons)
A faith that cannot wrestle is a faith that cannot survive a hospital waiting room. It was built for good weather. The kind that lasts is the kind that can take its hardest questions to God instead of away from him. Dr. Robert Smith Jr., who has preached and counseled through more grief than most, says the reason you can do that is who God is.
"God is not fragile. He is faithful. So he can take it." (Dr. Robert Smith Jr.)
Someone will object that this is just permission to be bitter and call it spiritual. It is not. Bringing your anger to God is the opposite of walking off muttering about him. One is a conversation. The other is an exit. Wrestling, in the Bible, always happens face to face. Jacob did not get blessed by avoiding the fight. He got blessed by refusing to let go.
Why do I feel let down when I did everything right?
Often the problem is not a broken God. It is a broken promise you were handed in his name. A lot of disappointment is the prosperity gospel coming due. That teaching is the American dream poured into Christianity and propped up with cherry-picked verses: enough faith, enough giving, enough positive confession, and the smooth life is yours. Jesus said the opposite. In this world you will have trouble. If you were trained to expect a pain-free road, then real life does not feel like life. It feels like betrayal.
"We wanna reframe what faith is supposed to be and what God actually promises, to help weed out the bad framing that creates further disappointment." (Lisa Fields)
So the fix is not more faith. It is truer expectations. God did not promise you a life without storms. He promised his presence inside them. Kristel Acevedo, who has walked people through seasons of everything falling apart, says the move is not to escape the wilderness but to let it do something to you.
"It's really about pausing and lamenting, taking audit of our world around us, and sitting with that. And then taking that to the Lord and saying, God, what does this mean, and where are you in the midst of it?" (Kristel Acevedo)
That is a different prayer than make this stop. It is a prayer that assumes God is in the room even when the room is on fire. Reset the expectation and the disappointment changes shape. You stop waiting for the God who keeps the storm away and start looking for the God who is in the boat.
What does it actually look like when someone comes back from this?
It looks like honesty, not a better argument. Take Scott. He grew up a front-row Baptist kid, then came up in the young, restless, and reformed world, sure he had the answers nailed down. Then came church hurt from leaders he trusted. Then his mother died of cancer after he begged God to heal her. The theology he had built his whole faith on did not hold, because it was never built to comfort anyone. It was built to win debates.
"All the things I'd built my faith on crumbled in an instant, because they didn't serve any purpose to me, because they weren't comforting." (Scott)
What pulled him back was not a sharper apologetic. It was a pastor honest enough to say, I do not know either, and the slow discovery that God is personal, not just logical. Scott is still holding on. He describes God differently now. Not the reward genie of his childhood, not the warrior God of his college years, but a God who stays close to people who are barely hanging on.
"He is both bigger than you could ever imagine and more personal than you could ever understand." (Scott)
Carmelyn Kinsey came at it from a different loss. She buried her father and her sister within six weeks of each other, then carried the family school they left behind. Her disappointment was not that God let them die. It was that she did not feel him helping her live afterward. Over time she reframed what God's protection even is.
"His protection is not so much from the situation. It's your peace in the situation." (Carmelyn Kinsey)
Two different stories, same turn. Neither one got the explanation they wanted. Both found God anyway, closer in than the answer would have been.
What do I do with the disappointment right now?
You say it. Out loud. To God first, then to someone safe. Fields leans on a line from her own therapist: we get stuck on the cross and forget there is a resurrection. The disappointment is real, but it is not the last word over your life. God still wants you to live a full one here, even if it looks nothing like the version you planned.
"I hope this will free you to get it out of your mouth so you can get it out of your heart, and that you will invite God to heal your heart." (Lisa Fields)
That is the whole practice in one sentence. The hurt moves out of your heart by way of your mouth. Said to God, said to people who love you, named instead of managed. Your pain is real. It is also a comma, not a period. The sentence is not over, and you do not have to finish it alone. If the weight ever turns into thoughts of ending your life, that is the moment to tell a real person today. In the US you can call or text 988 any time and reach someone trained to sit with you in it.
Quick answers
Is it a sin to be angry at God? No. Scripture is full of people who brought God their anger. David, Jeremiah, and even Jesus on the cross asked why. Naming it honestly is part of trusting him with it.
Does being disappointed with God mean my faith is weak? No. Disappointment and faith can live in the same heart. The same person can feel let down and still feel held.
Why do I feel let down even though I did everything right? Usually the issue is a faulty expectation, not a broken God. If you were taught faith guarantees a smooth life, real life will feel like a betrayal it was never meant to be.
What do I actually do with the disappointment? Say it out loud to God. Find honest community. Let people who love you see you. Healing starts when the hurt moves from your heart through your mouth.
Will my questions ever get answered? Some will, some will not. The goal is not always an answer that feels good. It is honesty and trust in the gap.
