Maybe you have had the question sitting in your chest for years and never said it out loud in church. Why did he let that happen? Why did my prayer get silence? Is any of this actually true? You swallow it because somewhere along the way you got the message that asking means you are slipping. A Jude 3 Project Courageous Conversations panel sat with that fear directly, and the answer they landed on was not a tidy line. It was permission.
Here is the direct answer. Yes, God can handle your questions. The heroes of the Bible questioned him constantly, from Abraham to Job to Jesus himself on the cross. A faith with no room for questions is not a stronger faith. It is a smaller one. The goal is not to silence your doubt or perform certainty you do not feel. It is to bring the doubt honestly to a God who has never once been threatened by it.
Doesn’t Asking God Hard Questions Mean My Faith Is Weak?
That is the fear underneath the question, and the panel went straight at it. Dr. Esau McCaulley opened by trying, and failing, to name a single hero in Scripture who never questioned God. Abraham questioned the long delay of God’s promise (Genesis 15). Paul begged for his thorn to be removed and was told no (2 Corinthians 12). Jesus himself cried out from the cross (Matthew 27:46).
“It is unfaithful for us to have a requirement for people that the very characters in the book that we revere don’t actually reflect,” McCaulley said. If the Bible’s own heroes asked the questions you are afraid to ask, the problem is not that you are asking. The problem is the standard you were handed, one the text itself never sets.
But Isn’t There a Difference Between Honest Doubt and Just Walking Away?
It is a real distinction, and the panel did not collapse it. Dr. Sarita Lyons pointed to Job, David and Habakkuk, three very different men who all brought hard, sometimes furious questions straight to God. What she noticed across all three is where their questions ended up. It was not in walking away. “Sometimes those questions aren’t a resignation, but a resolve that God is the way,” Lyons said. The honest question and the quiet exit are not the same move. One stays in the room with God, even angry. The other leaves it.
That distinction matters because it means the goal is not to eliminate the question. It is to keep asking it inside the relationship instead of outside it. A question taken to God, even an unresolved one, is still faith in motion.
What Kind of Theology Actually Causes People to Hide Their Questions?
Rev. Jenay Pitts-Murdoch named the real problem plainly. It is not the questions. It is a theology with no room for them. “I should hope that our God is big enough, broad enough, strong enough, caring enough to handle our questions,” she said. “It is concerning when we have theologies that cannot make room for questions.” A God who is genuinely sovereign, genuinely good and genuinely strong does not need his people to fake certainty on his behalf. A theology that requires that kind of performance is quietly admitting that its God is smaller than it claims.
Dr. Frederick Douglass Haynes III reached further back for the same point, to Gideon, who met the angel of the Lord with a complaint, not a creed: “Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us?” (Judges 6:13). “If I can’t ask that question, then my God is too small,” Haynes said. The size of the God you can question honestly is, in practice, the size of the God you actually believe in.
Where Is God When the Question Is About Real Suffering, Not Just Intellectual Doubt?
The panel did not dodge the hardest version of the question. Lyons argued that the only place that actually holds the full weight of the problem of suffering is the cross, where an innocent man bore what he did not deserve. “That is the only place where an innocent person ever suffered. We point people to the cross,” she said. The answer to suffering is not an argument that makes the pain disappear. It is a person who entered the worst of it first.
Pitts-Murdoch added a careful warning for anyone reading the Bible’s hardest stories: something happening in Scripture is not automatically God endorsing it. She pointed to the tragic story of Jephthah’s daughter (Judges 11). “When bad things happen to good people, I’m not going to tell you it was God’s will. Who said God validated them?” she said. Reading the Bible well means distinguishing what the text records from what the text approves.
Could My Intellectual Questions Actually Be About Something Else?
McCaulley offered the most personal turn of the conversation. He remembered college classes that argued the faith was false outright, and how quickly that became a convenient excuse to do what he already wanted to do. Looking back, he saw that his intellectual questions were partly a cover for something deeper. “My intellectual questions were a mask for my own spiritual misfittedness. I didn’t need a Jesus who could just fix the systems of the world. I need a Jesus who can actually fix me,” he said.
That does not mean every hard question is secretly an excuse. Lyons pressed for balance right after McCaulley’s point: keep asking the big questions about the world, but do not let that stop you from also asking God the searching questions about your own heart. Both kinds of honesty belong in the same faith.
How Should a Church Actually Respond When Someone Brings a Hard Question?
The panel turned practical here. McCaulley argued that the church too often teaches Bible content without teaching people how to actually read and apply it, which leaves believers defenseless the first time a real challenge shows up. Pitts-Murdoch reframed how leaders should receive those moments: “We have to be able to receive questions as invitations and not as indictments.” A question is someone trying to stay, not someone trying to leave.
Haynes pushed the point further with a personal story. His own daughter once asked him why he follows Jesus and not Buddha or Muhammad. He treated it as a real question deserving a real answer, not a threat that needed shutting down. An insecure faith that cannot survive that kind of question from its own children is, he warned, exactly the kind of faith that drives the next generation away.
Quick Answers
- Is doubt a sin? No. Scripture is full of faithful people, including Jesus, who questioned God. Honest questioning can be part of faith, not its opposite.
- Where is God when innocent people suffer? Lyons points to the cross, where an innocent man suffered, as the place Christians can take the hardest version of that question.
- Does everything in the Bible reflect God’s will? No. Pitts-Murdoch warns that terrible events recorded in Scripture, like Jephthah’s vow, are not automatically God’s endorsement.
- How can churches handle people’s doubts well? By treating questions as invitations rather than indictments, teaching people how to read the Bible for themselves, and being secure enough to engage honestly rather than shut the conversation down.

If a question in this piece touches something heavier than doubt, including thoughts of suicide or self-harm, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is available anytime by call or text. You are not meant to carry that alone.
None of these four leaders treated the question as theoretical. Each answered from a place that had clearly cost them something: a classroom that nearly cost McCaulley his faith, a daughter’s question Haynes could have shut down but did not. That is worth noticing. The people most qualified to say God can handle your questions are the ones who have actually asked him the hard ones and stayed.
