You did the things. You prayed about the decision. You waited for peace and you got it. You moved when you believed God was telling you to move. And it still came apart in your hands. Now you are sitting with a question you are almost ashamed to say out loud: if I held up my end, why didn't God hold up his?
Here is the honest answer, and it is going to land sideways at first. Doing everything right was never a guarantee that life would go right. That promise is the prosperity gospel, and it is not in the Bible. Scripture promises something harder and better: trouble in this world, and a God who stays close inside it. When the formula breaks, the problem is the formula. It is not you, and it is not God.
Kay Rodriguez learned that the slow, painful way. She grew up in church as a high achiever, the kind of person for whom most things came easy. Underneath the success was a quiet belief she never named until it failed her: do good things, and your life will be good. Then she did the good things, and her life fell apart anyway. What she found on the other side is the subject of this piece.
What is the prosperity gospel, and is it only about money?
Most of us think the prosperity gospel is the guy on TV asking for a seed offering so God will make you rich. That version is easy to spot and easy to reject. The version that actually runs your life is quieter. It is the belief that good behavior buys a good life. Rodriguez names it plainly.
"I don't think the prosperity gospel is just about money. It's also about, oh, if you do good things, then your life will be good. It's not just A plus B equals C. I don't think the Lord can fit into a formula." (Kay Rodriguez)
She calls it a very American way of defining success. Do the inputs, collect the outputs. It works for a spreadsheet. It does not work for a life, and it is not how God has ever described himself. South African theologian Mahlatse Mashua puts his finger on the same nerve. The formula turns God into a machine you operate.
"Many people treat God like he's a personal genie, a vending machine. And if you have faith somehow, there's a promise that you will not suffer. That there's a promise that you'll be free. Peace is being free from any problems, any pains, any lack. That's what it means to be a Christian and to be part of God's people. This obviously is a contradiction because you see it everywhere in the scriptures that we are not promised as God's people that we won't suffer." (Mahlatse Mashua)
Put a coin in, get a blessing out. Say the right prayer, avoid the wrong sins, and God owes you a comfortable life. Nobody preaches it that bluntly. We just absorb it, and then we run our whole faith on it without ever checking whether it is true.
If I did everything right and life fell apart, did I do something wrong?
This is the trap the formula sets. If good behavior produces a good life, then a bad life must mean bad behavior somewhere. So when it breaks, you turn the blame on yourself. Rodriguez lived exactly this. She prayed, fasted, sought counsel, and felt real peace about a move overseas. Within three months it collapsed. She came home spiritually decimated and then could not find work for years.
"I felt like I did all the right things, so it should have turned out the way I planned. And then it didn't. I was like, what have I done wrong?" (Kay Rodriguez)
Read that last line slowly, because it is the formula talking. The only category she had for failure was personal fault. If the equation is true, the math has to balance, so the missing variable must be her sin, her lack of faith, her hidden mistake.
Now hear the obvious objection, the one a lot of people will raise here. Doesn't the Bible actually connect obedience and blessing? It does, in places. But the Bible also spends a whole book demolishing the idea that suffering proves sin. The book of Job opens by telling you, the reader, that Job is righteous. Then his friends spend chapter after chapter insisting he must have earned his ruin. They are wrong, and God says so directly at the end. The Bible anticipated the formula and rejected it in writing.
Mashua names where the lie actually comes from, and it is not from God.
"It's actually us who distort the message, that make promises on behalf of God that he himself didn't make, or contrary to the promises of God. And so what ends up happening is that when people are failed by our lies, then they think that God has failed them. But our lies actually constructed an idol other than God, and idols by definition are meant to disappoint." (Mahlatse Mashua)
That reframes the whole crisis. When the formula breaks and you feel like God failed you, often what failed is a promise God never made. Somebody handed you an idol and called it faith. The idol was always going to let you down. The real God did not move.
What does the Bible actually say about suffering?
Part of Rodriguez's healing was discovering how much Scripture says about suffering, and how little of it she had ever been taught.
"There is so much scripture on suffering, and we just don't focus on it. Where was this scripture when I was growing up?" (Kay Rodriguez)
That question deserves a real answer. Jesus did not soft-sell the cost. He said it straight: in this world you will have trouble. Not might. Will. Paul writes that for those who belong to Christ, suffering and comfort arrive together, and the comfort is meant to be handed on to the next person who hurts. The Beatitudes bless the poor, the mourning, and the persecuted. There is no blessing reserved for the successful and comfortable. The Bible is not shy about pain. We are the ones who edited it out.
Mashua points to a line in Psalm 23 that most of us read right past, and it quietly dismantles the formula.
"He prepares a table before me in the presence of my enemies. I remember reading that and thinking, gosh, that's an awkward way of phrasing things. When I'm surrounded by my enemies, the kind of prayer I'm praying is God, get me out. And it seems as though the psalmist has an idea that God would prepare a table, that God somehow thinks, great, you're surrounded by enemies, now let's feast, let's you and I have communion." (Mahlatse Mashua)
The promise is not that the enemies disappear. The promise is a table set in the middle of them. Presence, not extraction. That is a very different God from the vending machine, and a far better one.
Why does the prosperity gospel feel so good when it's wrong?
Because under the promise of a good life is the promise of control. If doing right produces good outcomes, then you are in charge of your life through your behavior. You are not at anyone's mercy. You are running the machine. Rodriguez saw that this was the real thing she had been clinging to.
"I was a servant of trying to have control, trying to plan everything, trying to make sure stuff went according to plan." (Kay Rodriguez)
Letting God actually be sovereign meant loosening her grip even when she could not see where the road went. Former pro basketball player Chantelle Anderson, who hit the top of her field and found it hollow, lands the same lesson in one sentence.
"If I'm not in control, then I need to follow the one who is." (Chantelle Anderson)
That is the trade the formula will never offer you, because the formula is built to keep you in the driver's seat. Real faith is the opposite. It hands the wheel to someone you trust precisely because you cannot see around the next bend.
So what do you do when you did everything right and life still fell apart?
First, stop auditing yourself for the hidden sin that broke the machine. There is no machine. Take the disappointment to God honestly, the way the Psalms do, out loud and unedited. Lisa Fields, who leads the Jude 3 Project and has sat in this exact valley, is clear that the wrestling itself is not the enemy.
"Wrestling isn't the death of your faith. On the contrary, wrestling is the key to growing in your faith." (Lisa Fields)
Second, go find the Scripture on suffering you were never taught, and read it slowly. Let it retrain the equation you carry. Third, let people walk with you. The formula is a lonely religion because it makes your pain your own fault. The gospel puts you in a body that shows up.
And here is the part Rodriguez will not let go of, even though she would never have chosen the road that taught it. The God on the other side of the collapse is closer than the one she started with. She used to picture God like a school principal: over the building, generally approving, not really involved. The hard years killed that picture and gave her a better one.
"God is bigger and more creative than what you think is great or right. He's so close and so near to us." (Kay Rodriguez)
Anderson, looking back at her own crash, refuses to call it wasted.
"I'm not gonna waste the pain. Something good is gonna come from it." (Chantelle Anderson)
None of that makes the falling-apart hurt less. It is not supposed to. What it does is move the blame off your back and put your weight on something that can actually hold it. You did not break the formula. The formula was never real. The God who stays is, and he is nearer to the wreckage than the principal ever was to the school.
Quick answers
Is the prosperity gospel biblical?
No. The Bible never promises that obedience guarantees a comfortable life. Jesus promised the opposite: trouble in this world, and his presence through it.
If I am suffering, did I do something wrong?
Not necessarily. That is the assumption Job's friends made, and the book of Job rejects it. God himself corrects them. Faithful people suffer too.
Why does the prosperity gospel feel so good?
It offers control. If good behavior guarantees good outcomes, you are in charge. Real faith means trusting a God you do not control.
What do I do when I did everything right and life still fell apart?
Take the disappointment to God honestly, sit with what Scripture actually says about suffering, and let people walk with you. The formula failing is not your faith failing.
Does God promise Christians an easy life?
No. As Mahlatse Mashua puts it, what God promises is not freedom from trouble but his nearness in it: a table set in the presence of your enemies, not an escape from them.
