A standalone study on the call to go toward people who believe differently, built around a conversation between two battle rappers on opposite sides of belief.
The Big Question
Should Christians keep mostly to their own, or go toward people who believe and live differently? Jesus was called a friend of sinners, and he never pushed back on the label. This study looks at the difference between judging a culture from the outside and entering it with humility, and at what it means that the church is a people sent out rather than walled in.
Why This Question Resists a Quick Answer
It would be easy to answer this question with a slogan in either direction, either guard your circle tightly or throw caution out entirely. Street Hymns and Sis resist both. Their actual friendship, built across deep disagreement about who God is, did not happen by accident or by minimizing the difference. It happened through years of consistent presence, the kind that earns the right to be heard and to actually hear someone else.
Listen, listen, listen. Not to judge, not to see the differences, but to see the likeness. (Sis)
Sis's framing deserves a second look. Looking for likeness first is not the same as pretending the differences do not exist. It is choosing the order in which you engage them, building enough trust to eventually discuss the real disagreement honestly, instead of leading with the disagreement and never getting anywhere near trust.
Presence Before Pronouncement
Never judge a culture from the outside, because you'll never understand it. (Street Hymns)
This is not a call to suspend discernment. It is a call to earn the right to exercise it accurately. Judgments formed entirely from outside a culture, based on secondhand impressions or a single clip, tend to miss what is actually happening inside it. Presence does not replace discernment. It is what makes discernment land on the right target instead of a caricature.
The Church as Sent, Not Sealed
If we are the ekklesia, we are called to go out. Broaden the horizon of what you consider to be ministry and evangelism. (Street Hymns)
Street Hymns puts his finger on something worth sitting with honestly. Most Christians, left to their own preferences, build a social world of people who already agree with them. That is comfortable, and it is also a departure from what the word for church, ekklesia, the called out and sent out people, actually implies about the church's posture toward the world.
Scripture to Sit With
Matthew 11:19. Jesus is called a friend of tax collectors and sinners, and he does not deny it.
Luke 5:29-32. Jesus eats with the outsiders and says he came for the sick, not the well.
1 Corinthians 9:19-22. Paul becomes all things to all people in order to win some, adapting his approach without abandoning his message.
James 1:19. Be quick to listen and slow to speak, the posture that lets you actually see the person in front of you.
Quotes Worth Discussing

- There's a reason you believe that. I would like to know the cause and effect. (Street Hymns)
- Even now I don't disrespect Christianity, in a sense, because I know it works. (Sistar Outspoken)
- We can defend the church without being defensive about the church. (Dr. CJ Rhodes)
Discernment: Examining Your Own Circle
This study asks you to look honestly at who is actually in your life, not just at the principle in the abstract.
First, take an honest inventory. List the people you spend real time with, not acquaintances, actual relationship. How many believe meaningfully differently than you about God? If the list is short or empty, ask why, and be honest about whether the answer is wisdom or avoidance.
Second, examine a judgment you have already made. Think of a group or culture you have an opinion about, but have never actually spent time inside. Sistar Outspoken's account of leaving the church is a sobering check here. She describes being told, while grieving, that her continued pain meant she was not doing what she was supposed to do, and feeling rejected rather than understood. Where might your own confident judgments about a group be built on a similarly thin, secondhand picture?
Third, apply Dr. CJ Rhodes's distinction between defending the church and being defensive about it. Defending means actually engaging someone's real critique with honesty. Being defensive means protecting the institution's reputation instead of hearing the person. Which one shows up more often in your own conversations about faith with someone who has left or never been part of church?
Fourth, ask the cause and effect question Street Hymns models. Pick one belief you find clearly wrong in someone you actually know, and ask what experience or reasoning led them there. You do not have to agree with the conclusion to take the path that led there seriously.
Holding Conviction and Closeness Together
It is worth addressing directly the worry many believers have about this whole approach. Doesn't closeness to people who believe differently eventually soften your own convictions, even if it does not happen on purpose? It can, and that risk is real, which is exactly why Scripture also warns that bad company corrupts character. But notice what actually protected Street Hymns and Sis's friendship across real disagreement. Neither one stopped believing what they believed in order to stay close to the other. Street Hymns is still a Christian rapper making his case through his art. The friendship survived because each one stayed rooted while genuinely seeing the other, not because either one blurred the difference to keep the peace. The goal of this study is not less conviction. It is more accurate love, aimed at an actual person instead of a category.
Discussion Questions
- Be honest: how many people in your regular life believe very differently from you? What does that tell you?
- Jesus was called a friend of sinners. Does your life make that title plausible about you? Why or why not?
- Where have you judged a group from the outside without ever being present with them?
- Think of a belief you find wrong. Do you actually know the why behind it for the people who hold it?
- What would it look like this month to go toward someone different rather than waiting for them to come to you?
Naming the Limit of This Study
It is worth being honest about what this study is not saying, so the lesson does not get stretched past what it can hold. Going toward people who believe differently is not the same as treating every belief as equally true, and presence is not a substitute for ever naming a real disagreement. Street Hymns did not stop being a Christian rapper to stay close to Sis. The study calls for ordered love, conviction held alongside genuine relationship, not relationship purchased by setting conviction aside. Where that balance gets uncomfortable in your own life is usually exactly where this study is asking you to grow.
Go Deeper
This study comes from a Jude 3 Project People to Person conversation between two battle rappers who believe differently. For a related study, see Why Do People Leave the Church, and How Should We Respond? with Sistar Outspoken, which looks at what happens when the church fails to listen well before someone walks away.
A Closing Reflection
This week, go toward one person who sees the world differently than you do, with the single goal of understanding the why behind their view. Look for one thing you share before you name anything you do not. Let being a friend of sinners cost you a little comfort.
