The question rarely shows up as an argument. It shows up as a suspicion: if I were really serious about Jesus, wouldn’t I have outgrown this music by now? The answer is yes, you can be a serious Christian and love hip hop. Brian “B. Dot” Miller, a music journalist who has worked inside the industry for fifteen years, makes that case as a believer who wants hip hop to carry the gospel, not as someone who tolerates the culture from a distance. The harder work is figuring out where the guilt actually comes from, because most of it rests on assumptions that do not hold up.
Miller’s case does not hand anyone a blank check on every lyric. It goes after something more basic: the belief that the genre itself belongs to the other side, so that loving it puts a quiet mark against your faith.
Where Does the Guilt Actually Come From?
It helps to separate two kinds of discomfort:
- The specific kind. A particular verse glorifies something you know is wrong, and your conscience notices.
- The general kind. You feel vaguely suspect for loving the art form at all, as if serious faith would show up as distance from it.
The first kind deserves attention, and we will come back to it. The second kind usually rests on a picture of faith as a performance, where devotion is measured by what you have given up. Miller rejects that picture at the root. He draws a line between religion, which he describes as traditions and practices where you do this to get that, and the faith he actually holds. In his telling, nothing he can do earns God’s favor. Christ already did what was needed, for everyone.
Scripture puts it the same way:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9).
If your standing with God depended on staying away from certain kinds of culture, a playlist really would be a threat. If your standing rests on grace, the question changes. It stops being Am I allowed? and becomes What am I doing with what I love? The first question produces guilt. The second produces discernment.
Isn’t “Christian Hip Hop” the Safe Version?
For a lot of believers, the compromise has been to switch lanes. Keep the beats, swap in artists with the right label, and the guilt goes away. Miller, who has spent his career covering this music, is not satisfied with that arrangement, though not because he dislikes the artists.
“I kind of cringe a little bit when I hear the term Christian hip hop because it’s like, would you define someone else as a Muslim rapper?” Miller said. His point is that the artists under that label are, in his words, “just people that love God.” He asks whether anyone would call Kendrick Lamar a Christian rapper, even though Lamar opened his album with a prayer.
The objection is practical, and it cuts two ways. For the artist, the label “doesn’t give the art a chance to be the art,” as Miller puts it. The work is sorted before it is heard. For the listener outside the faith, the tag works like a closed door. Miller notes that a song may hold “a theme or a trope in it that could apply to someone who’s a Muslim,” and that listener will never press play because the category already told him the music is not for him.
Doesn’t faith deserve to be named? Isn’t dropping the label a quiet way of hiding it? Miller is not asking anyone to hide anything. Naming a person’s faith and filing their art into a religious subcategory are different acts. The first is honest. The second, in his view, limits who will ever hear the message. So the labeled lane is not the only place a Christian listener can stand. Miller wants faith to show up across the whole culture, not in one section of it.
Can Hip Hop Actually Carry the Gospel?
Miller thinks it already has. He points to Kendrick Lamar’s first major-label album, which he says opened with a prayer for salvation and sold millions of copies. Then he makes the provocative claim: “wow, Kendrick probably saved more souls than a local pastor.”
That claim deserves pushback, and the pushback is strong. Nobody can count what happened in those listeners’ hearts. A prayer at the top of an album is not the same as an artist setting out to evangelize, and Miller himself says he would not call Lamar a Christian rapper. The same records that open with a prayer can also be full of language and scenes a Christian would never hold up as a model. Miller does not address explicit content directly. His argument is about reach: a prayer on a widely played record travels into places a sermon never enters, and he believes “hip hop is a powerful tool” for saying, whether subtly or plainly, that Christ saves. That is a claim about what the genre can carry, not a claim that everything it carries is good.
There is biblical precedent for meeting people inside their world:
“To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some” (1 Corinthians 9:22).
The flexibility has a purpose attached. Paul is describing a missionary posture, not a license to absorb anything.
This is where the specific kind of guilt from earlier belongs, and where it is often right. Discernment means listening closely enough to hear what a song is doing. A track that mourns a friend lost to violence asks something different of you than a track that makes revenge sound glamorous. One sits close to the lament of the Psalms. The other is training you to want something. Skipping the second is not legalism. It is a conscience working on actual content rather than on a blanket rule that the genre is unholy.
Do the Culture’s Objections to the Faith Hold Up?
The believer who loves hip hop can feel accused from two directions: suspect to the church for the music, and suspect to the culture for the faith. Miller says the most common charge he hears in hip hop spaces, one he heard even before he became a Christian, is that Christianity is a white man’s religion.
His first response is to ask whether the critic has read the book. He argues that the loudest critics often repeat what they heard secondhand, and that read in context, the Bible’s places, settings and people are far from the white narrative later projected onto it. He calls the image of Jesus “the biggest distraction ever,” and describes the white Jesus as “just one man’s interpretation of what he thinks the Savior looks like.”
Then he makes a sharper argument. He counts three places where Scripture describes Jesus’s appearance: twice in Isaiah and once in Revelation. Christians have long read Isaiah’s servant passages as a portrait of Jesus, and what they describe is suffering and ordinariness, not features:
“he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him” (Isaiah 53:2).
Revelation 1 describes the risen Christ in symbolic vision, which is how that kind of literature works. With so many eyewitnesses around Jesus, Miller reasons, “if it was important, it would’ve been included.” What the writers did record at length is the sacrifice.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, added a real complication. In her experience with students, seeing a Savior who identifies with them sometimes matters and sometimes does not, depending on the student. Miller is not saying representation is meaningless. He is saying it cannot become the center, because the text does not put it there.
The slavery charge is heavier. Miller argues that biblical servitude was mostly tied to debt rather than race, unlike the slavery practiced in North America, and he points to the law against kidnapping a person in Exodus 21:16 and to the exodus from Egypt. That is his argument, and these passages are among the hardest in Scripture. Christians weigh them differently, and they deserve careful reading that separates what the text describes and regulates from what it endorses. Miller’s firmer point is about the enslavers. “I could use a knife to cut, uh, some food, or I could use it to stab somebody,” Miller said, and the misuse “makes the person wrong.” That settles who is guilty for using the Bible to justify bondage. It does not finish the work of reading those texts.
Miller’s habit behind all of this is preparation. He studies Scripture, listens to sermons and does his own research, because skeptics tend to raise the same questions over and over. He does not force these conversations, but when they come up, he wants to be ready. He is quick to say he is no theologian or pastor. He simply knows enough to make his point, and his place in the culture gives that point an audience.
The Real Hypocrisy Question
The other charge Miller hears constantly, from artists and from friends, is that Christians are hypocrites. He does not defend anyone’s double life. He questions what the objection assumes Christians are claiming.
“I am just as bad as you,” Miller said. “I am a dirty wretched sinner.” Then the turn: “The difference is, is that I’m saved by grace.” He describes sin as part of human nature and says he will keep slipping until he dies. What has changed is that he no longer wants the sins he used to chase, and he tries to live as Christlike as he can.
Fields offered the definition that sharpens everything: “hypocrisy isn’t the presence of sin, it’s the absence of honesty.” The charge sticks when a person is one way at church and another at home. It does not stick simply because a Christian is still imperfect.
Turn that definition back on the guilt this piece started with. Picture a believer who loves this music, hides it from church friends and nods along when they treat the whole genre as suspect. The music is not the dishonest part of that picture. The split is. A Christian who loves hip hop openly, listens closely enough to skip what deserves skipping and can explain why the rest is worth hearing has nothing to hide. That honesty is closer to serious faith than any amount of quiet apology.
