We just grew apart is usually a gentle way of saying something went wrong and nobody dealt with it. The texts slowed, the invitations stopped, and silence did the work a conversation should have done. Behind that pattern there is rarely a dramatic betrayal. More often, neither person knew how to work through a conflict, so the conflict decided for them. BJ Thompson, who counsels people on friendships as well as marriages, puts it bluntly: “The number one thing that breaks up friendships is the inability to resolve conflict as it arises.”
That sentence moves the problem. If betrayal ends most friendships, then fading away is a reasonable response to a bad person. If a missing skill ends most of them, then fading away is often a loss you could have prevented. And a skill can be learned. Repair starts with a different posture toward the conflict, toward yourself and toward the person across from you.
Why Does One Conflict Feel Like the End?
Thompson starts further back than the fight itself. Culturally, he argues, “in a lot of ways we’ve made them optional.” Romance gets endless attention. Family gets sermons and seminars. Friendship is expected to take care of itself. “I think we assume it’ll happen,” he says.
Nobody practices a skill for a relationship they believe runs on autopilot. So when conflict shows up, and Thompson treats conflict as inevitable over time and through changing seasons, it lands in a relationship with no tools for handling it. He describes the effect as jarring: “it forces you to a crossroads unnecessarily.” The word that matters is unnecessarily. The friendship did not have to reach a fork in the road. It got there because nobody knew another way through.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, adds a contrast that is hard to shake. She recalls a pastor who pointed out that people will stay with a partner who cheated on them twice, yet walk away from him because he failed to greet them once. In romantic relationships, Fields observes, people somehow find room to absorb offenses that are deeply painful. With friends, “we don’t have the bandwidth to handle minor infractions.” The smaller offense often ends the friendship faster, not because friends hurt us more, but because we decided in advance the friendship was not worth the effort.
What Is the Argument Actually About?
A second reason friendships collapse is that people fight about the wrong thing. Thompson’s first piece of practical advice is to “try to get to the root of the issue, not the conflict itself.” Someone who is yelling may be carrying something older than the moment.
He is candid that this is true of him. His conflicts often revolve around a feeling he has had about the person for a while, or an old incident he never addressed. Sometimes he is simply in a hard season, and the friend happens to be nearby when it spills over. The argument looks like it is about Tuesday. It is really about last spring, or about nothing the friend did at all.
So instead of answering the words, Thompson suggests asking better questions. What are you really upset about? Did I offend you? “Are you disappointed? Do you feel ashamed? Did I make you feel guilty?” Questions like these treat the other person as someone with an inner life worth understanding, not an opponent with a position worth defeating.
Fields makes the mirror image of the point. When someone treats you badly, the cause may have little to do with you. People have bad days, arguments at home, burdens you cannot see. It is, she says, “self-centered to think that every time a person engages you wrong that it was about you.” That does not excuse real harm. It does cool a great deal of ordinary friction, the kind that ends friendships only because someone read a stressed moment as a verdict.
Why Look at Yourself First?
This is the hardest move, and Thompson thinks it makes everything else possible. Walking into a conflict convinced you are the reasonable one turns reconciliation into prosecution. He admits his own instinct runs that way: “I start with the other person and I want to fix them, and I wanna make them better first.”
What changed his approach, he says, was Scripture:
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jeremiah 17:9).
In context, Jeremiah is speaking to Judah about a people whose trust has drifted from God, and the line is a sober diagnosis of the human heart, the speaker’s included. Thompson draws the personal conclusion: “I can’t assume the best about my motives.” If his own heart can deceive him, his version of the conflict is not automatically the true one.
He pairs that with Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount:
“Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye” (Matthew 7:5).
The KJV’s beam is a large piece of timber and the mote a speck, which is why many modern versions say plank and speck. The verse does not forbid helping your friend with the speck. It sets an order. Self-examination comes first, and only then can you see clearly enough to help.
Thompson describes what that order produces. Assuming you also bring something broken to the situation “creates a lot of humility in a situation where now you’re not enemies, but you see that person as your ally.” Two people who each believe the other is the whole problem stand on opposite sides. Two people who each believe they contributed something stand together, facing a shared problem. He compresses it this way: “At the root of every conflict is pride,” and a “healed relationship is humility, leading to love.” Humility does not mean pretending you were wrong when you were not. It means being willing to find out.
What Does the Way God Treats You Have to Do With It?
Here Thompson makes the argument that keeps this from being ordinary relationship advice. He thinks people who cannot resolve conflict often have a thin picture of the gospel. In his words, “We don’t really have a good picture of how God treats us. Therefore, we treat people based off of what we believe.”
The reasoning is worth slowing down for. Christians believe they offended God and that God pursued them anyway, seeking reconciliation rather than cutting them off. A person who habitually drops friends at the first offense is living out a different story than the one they profess. Thompson suggests that if you keep backing away from relationships, treating conflict as irreconcilable or withdrawing into yourself, you may want to examine “how you understand how life works and how God treats you.” Someone who consistently cannot show mercy, he adds, may not be experiencing grace in their own life.
Fields gives the point a vivid test case. A popular saying holds that people who were not with you at your lowest do not get to share your highest. She sets that beside the disciples. Mark 14:50 records what they did when Jesus was arrested: “And they all forsook him, and fled.” Yet, as Fields notes, he did not discard them. He let them reign with him. Had Jesus operated by the meme, there would have been no apostles. Following him, she argues, means resisting a culture that trains us toward revenge.
Fields also explains why a ministry devoted to defending the faith cares about something as everyday as friendship. She argues that the strongest defense of the faith is the way Christians love and care for people, and that a life with no working relationships outside romance and family is a weak witness. She connects this to Jesus’s prayer:
“That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me” (John 17:21).
In that prayer, the unity of Jesus’s followers is tied to whether the world believes. Unity among imperfect people requires working through conflict, because there is no other kind of people to be unified.
Isn’t It Sometimes Right to Walk Away?
Yes, and the objection deserves a straight answer, because some relationships do real damage. Thompson does not pretend otherwise. When someone believes a friendship is beyond repair, he says, they should ask what is driving that conclusion. Is the person abusive? Neglectful? Abandoning you? Or has the season simply changed? Where abuse is present, the question is safety, not repair, and distance is not a failure of grace.

For most strained friendships, though, Thompson offers a middle category between keeping everything the same and cutting someone off. Often, he says, “the relationship needs to be readjusted.” Someone may move from your inner circle to what he calls a “fringe friend”: a person you still love, respect and care for, without the same level of closeness. That is an honest response to real change, and very different from vanishing.
He also challenges what people usually mean by “too far.” Many of us decide a friendship has gone too far simply because it has become uncomfortable. Thompson points to Proverbs:
“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17).
Proverbs offers wisdom about how life generally works rather than guarantees, and this one describes friction as part of how friends shape each other. Thompson draws the warning: “The quicker I am to run from that friction oftentimes result in my dullness in character.”
Fields suspects most people badly overestimate how many relationships are truly beyond saving. In her experience the share is closer to one in ten than the eight in ten people often assume, and “it’s rare that a relationship can’t be reconciled if two people work together.” That is her estimate, not a study. It still names something worth checking: whether toxicdescribes the friendship or describes how hard the conversation feels.
Where Repair Begins
Thompson’s starting point is almost embarrassingly simple. Reconciliation is something to practice regularly, and the first practice is an apology: “There’s two words, I apologize.” The trouble is that people have drifted away from plain apologies. “We love giving excuses,” he says. An excuse explains why the offense was understandable. An apology owns it. Only one of those opens a door.
The second practice is choosing the friendship on purpose. When we are young, friendships form around whoever is in class or on the team. But “as you grow older, you have to develop friendship based off of intentionality.” Many adult friendships fade without any fight at all, simply because nobody kept choosing them. The drift feels passive. It is a decision made by default.
Thompson thinks the stakes run higher than people assume. He is convinced good friendships would have kept Samson out of much of the trouble he walked into alone. And he warns that the habit travels: “If you don’t gain the skill sets to forgive, to move on, to heal, you’re gonna bring that baggage into every relationship.” Quiet exits do not stay with friends. They follow you into marriage, work and church.
That is why letting a friendship fade after conflict is not really neutral. It feels like avoiding one hard conversation. Over time it becomes training, and each exit teaches you that discomfort means the end. The alternative is not a dramatic confrontation. It is going first, asking what the conflict is really about, owning your part and treating the other person the way you believe God has treated you.
