You can feel it the second the conversation turns. Someone names a preacher, a worship style, a denomination, and the room picks a side before anyone has made an argument. You already know which camp you are in. You probably know which camp the person across from you is in too. And somewhere underneath the small talk, you are deciding whether they are safe or suspect.
Most of us were handed our camp before we ever chose it. We inherited a list of who is sound and who is off, who to read and who to roll our eyes at. The hip-hop artist Da’ T.R.U.T.H spent years on that list. Then he did something most of us never do. He went and sat with the people he had written off.
Here is the short answer. A lot of what splits Christians into camps is not theology at all. It is social. Da’ T.R.U.T.H says we cling to positions less because they please God and more because they keep us in good standing with our own crowd. His way out was not to stop having convictions. It was to stop sniping from a distance, spend real time with believers who think and worship differently, and learn to live in the tension instead of picking a tribe.
Why Do We Pick a Side Instead of Living in the Middle?
Because the middle is exhausting and the extremes are cheap. Da’ T.R.U.T.H sees the pull everywhere outside church first. Two women wear the same dress and a magazine asks who wore it best. In hip-hop we argue the top five. In sports we argue the greatest of all time. In politics you are red or blue, and the moment you say so, a hundred other positions get assigned to you for free.
Then we walk into church and do the same thing. He watches the pendulum of church history swing hard from one extreme to the other, generation after generation, each side overcorrecting the last. Sitting in the middle and holding two true things at once is just harder work than planting a flag.
Extremes are always easier.
— Da’ T.R.U.T.H
He is right, and it is worth being honest about why. A camp gives you a script. It tells you what to think before you think it, who to trust before you meet them, what to feel when a certain name comes up. That is a lot of decisions made for you. Nuance, by contrast, asks you to keep your eyes open and your verdict slow. Most of us would rather be certain than careful.
Is the Division Really About Theology, or Is It About Belonging?
Often it is not theology, he says, even when it wears theology’s clothes. A lot of what we defend has less to do with God being pleased and more to do with our people being pleased. We do not want to be seen as off, or heretical, or as the one who actually likes the people nobody else likes.
So often we think issues are theological when they’re really not, they’re really social.
— Da’ T.R.U.T.H
His proof text is Peter, and it stings because Peter is supposed to be the rock. In Galatians 2:11–14, Peter eats freely with Gentile believers, no hesitation, until a certain crowd of Jewish Christians shows up. Then he quietly slides away from the table. Paul names it to his face. That was not conviction. Peter had not changed his mind about the gospel. He changed his seat because of who was watching. Da’ T.R.U.T.H uses that moment as a mirror. How much of our distancing is conviction, and how much is just Peter scooting his chair?
You can hear the obvious objection here. Surely some divisions really are about truth, not peer pressure. That is true, and he does not deny it. But notice how rarely we audit our own motives. We assume the other camp is driven by tribe and our camp is driven by truth. The Peter story refuses to let us keep that flattering split.
What Can You Actually Learn From Believers Who Are Not Like You?
More than you would guess, because no single stream has the whole river. Da’ T.R.U.T.H stopped criticizing from a distance and spent real time inside worlds he used to dismiss. The Reformed world, he says, taught him how to think: how to read a verse in light of the chapter, and the chapter in light of the whole Bible. The charismatic world taught him a different kind of love, and showed him things he could not explain away, like watching his uncle healed of a cancer the doctors had already given up on.
This is exactly the point Dr. Dwight A. Moody makes from the other direction. Moody, who has spoken with the Jude 3 Project about Christian difference, argues that the family is bigger than your branch of it.
The salvation we share is a bigger we than you thought.
— Dwight A. Moody
Moody pushes it into a challenge worth sitting with. If we cannot even handle the differences inside our own house, we have no business pretending we can witness to a watching world.
If we can’t handle the diversity in our own Christian community, how can we possibly handle the diversity in the pluralism that’s in the world?
— Dwight A. Moody
And Moody names the tool most of us skip. Not a sharper argument. Listening.
The most effective apologetic still is just listening to people.
— Dwight A. Moody
How Do You Disagree Without Pushing the Other Person Away?
You slow down and you stay curious, especially when you are sure you are right. Da’ T.R.U.T.H modeled this in the hardest way available. He went back and apologized to people he had been too hard on. He watched a preacher he had filed away as a prosperity teacher spend years preaching grace well, and he decided to give credit where it was due instead of guarding his old verdict.
Yana Conner, who teaches Christians how to have hard conversations, says the goal is not to win the room. It is to stay in relationship long enough for truth to land.
Even if somebody says something sort of outlandish, you ask them why. You don’t have to puff your chest up or nothing.
— Yana Conner
She calls the alternative the slow game, and it is the opposite of the dunk we are trained to crave online.
We need to play the slow game, which is asking more questions, getting time with them, not embarrassing them in group.
— Yana Conner
Asking why is not weakness. It is the difference between trying to fix a person and trying to know one. The camps reward the first. Christ asks for the second.
So Does Unity Mean Ignoring the Differences?
No, and this is where Da’ T.R.U.T.H refuses the easy version of peace. He still says be a Berean (Acts 17:11). Go back to Scripture. Keep the disagreements that are actually real. Unity is not pretending everyone is right and calling it grace. That is just cowardice with better branding.
The real move is humility about the size of your own sight. None of us has it all figured out. We all see in part. Paul says it plainly:
“For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known” (1 Corinthians 13:12).
If that is true, then the believer in the other camp is not only my rival. He might be holding a piece of the picture I cannot see from where I stand.
We’re all gonna see through a glass darkly.
— Da’ T.R.U.T.H
Travis Williams, who teaches on why we stay committed to the flawed church, puts the stakes in one line. The camps treat church as a club you shop for. Scripture treats it as a body you belong to.
We don’t go to church. We are the church.
— Travis Williams
If we are the church, then writing off another camp is not like switching brands. It is like a hand deciding it has no need of the foot (see 1 Corinthians 12:21). Williams takes it all the way to apologetics itself.
You can’t really be a defender of the faith apart from a local church.
— Travis Williams
Put those voices together and the picture is consistent. Da’ T.R.U.T.H, Moody, Conner and Williams are not asking you to dissolve your convictions into mush. They are asking you to hold them as a member of a family, not a fan of a faction. So instead of sniping across the room, you draw closer and work it out as kin. That is harder than picking a tribe. It is also the only version that looks anything like Jesus.
Quick Answers
Why are Christians so divided into camps? Da’ T.R.U.T.H says a lot of it is social, not theological. We pick a side to fit in with our crowd, and the extremes are simply easier to hold than the tension in the middle.
Is the Reformed and charismatic divide really about theology? Often it is not. He says the fear of being seen as off, or of disappointing the teachers and tribe we admire, drives more of our distancing than honest conviction does.
Does living in the tension mean theology does not matter? No. He still says be a Berean, test everything against Scripture and keep the disagreements that are real. The call is to stay in relationship while you work them out.
What changed his mind about other Christians? Spending real time with believers he used to criticize. He says the Reformed world taught him how to think and the charismatic world taught him a different kind of love. He even apologized to people he had judged too harshly.
What is the Peter example about? In Galatians 2, Peter pulls back from eating with Gentile believers when other Jewish Christians arrive. Da’ T.R.U.T.H uses it to show how social pressure, not conviction, drives a lot of our distancing.
