The early church had mothers as well as fathers, and several of them have names. Amma Sarah, Amma Syncletica, Amma Theodora and Amma Matrona were desert teachers whose sayings survived. Olympias was a deacon in Constantinople who led a large community of women and funded churches and missionaries. Women like these prayed without ceasing, preached in villages, financed the ministries of famous men and learned Scripture so deeply that, by one historian’s account, they could recite it while they worked.
That historian is Sister Laura Swan, a Benedictine nun in the Pacific Northwest whose book The Forgotten Desert Mothers gathers what survives about these women. Her work is a recovery project, and the record she works from is badly broken. It cannot supply full biographies. It can supply names, practices and a handful of concrete stories, enough to show that the familiar list of early Christian heroes (Augustine, Athanasius, Tertullian) left out half the people doing the work.
The First Pattern: Women Who Paid for the Mission
The story starts in the Gospels. Luke records women traveling with Jesus and funding the work from their own resources:
“And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance” (Luke 8:3).
Luke is describing what happened, not issuing a command. The description still matters, because it shows that from the beginning the movement ran partly on women’s money and presence.
According to Swan, the pattern held as the church spread. The well-known men of the early African church each “had a circle of women who were major supporters of their ministry and had a ministry of their own.” That phrase carries two separate claims. The first is patronage. The second is independence: these women held ministries that belonged to them.
The patrons were not passive donors. Swan names Paula and Marcella among women who either inherited wealth or managed their families’ estates, and who used those resources to establish house churches, found monastic communities and fund missions. Many then handed their estates to managers and went on mission themselves, sometimes traveling with men and “preaching and teaching right alongside the guys.” The communities they founded usually included men, women and children, and Swan describes them as foundations for Christian culture, education and healthcare. Augustine, she adds, had many women in the monastery at his cathedral in Hippo.
Marcella also belonged to the circle around Jerome, the translator of the Latin Vulgate. Swan reports that Jerome credited several women, Marcella among them, as sounding boards for his translation work, and judged that “their command of Greek and Hebrew was just as strong as his.” That detail answers a common assumption that women of the period were uniformly illiterate. Not all of them could read, Swan notes, but many could, and some read the biblical languages at the level of the era’s most famous translator.
The Desert Generation, 300 to About 360
In the three hundreds a different kind of leadership appeared in the Egyptian desert. Swan describes the desert ascetics as people who left Roman society to seek solitude and God. Within those communities a man of seasoned wisdom was called abba, father, and a woman was called amma, mother. Both titles come from Coptic Egypt.
The title was honorific. A community gave it to someone it trusted because she had spent years seeking God and wisdom. No institution conferred it. It was also used for both sexes in parallel. Swan notes that the term survives in some lesser-known Christian communities of the Middle East, and that the Western word abbot descends from the same root. Western monastic vocabulary grew out of an Egyptian setting where mothers and fathers shared one way of naming spiritual authority.
The four major ammas, Sarah, Syncletica, Theodora and Matrona, belong to this period. Swan places them between 300 and 350 or 360. Beyond that window, she says, “We actually don’t know anything about their life. It’s only their sayings that survived.” That limits what anyone can responsibly write about them. No birthplaces, family names or conversion stories exist to retell. What exists is their teaching, preserved because their communities judged it worth copying. Swan believes many more women’s teachings were once preserved and later lost, for the plainest of reasons: “Libraries get burned and people die.”
Their surviving sayings can sound harsh to modern readers, suspicious of the body and drawn to suffering. Swan’s explanation is that “the goal was to become like the angels.” Some women cropped their hair and wore men’s robes, trying to live without gender for the sake of single-minded devotion. Swan does not commend that practice. She holds that “our human body is a gift from God” and remarks, “I think living well is enough of an asceticism.” What she keeps from them is their aim, purity of heart and an undivided pursuit of God, which is why they left the cities when they could.
How They Prayed and Worked
The ammas inherited from the Jewish community a rhythm of at least morning and evening prayer, praying the Psalms and Scripture aloud. Reading itself was spoken. People of that culture read out loud even when alone.
Their larger goal was prayer that continued between the set hours. Most supported themselves by weaving rope or making baskets, which Swan says counted as serious economic work at the time. And “they would be doing their work with their hands while reciting the entire Bible.” Swan goes further: “They actually memorized it in the Hebrew and in the Greek.” Her own image for this inward journey is that it is “three feet long, but five miles deep.”
The memorization claim makes more sense against the oral culture Swan describes. In that world, she argues, hearing a text read aloud could imprint it quickly, while reading and writing were separate skills that not every reader shared. A memorized Bible was a portable Bible for people who did not own one.
Their devotion had an economic edge. When they went into villages to sell their goods and buy supplies, Swan says, “the first 10% went to the local deacon” for the poor. The desert women prayed apart from the cities, but they kept funding the church’s care for the poor inside them.
Deacons Before and After the New Title, About 325 to 350
That local deacon could have been a woman. Swan explains that deacon began as a gender-neutral title. Deacons received alms and redistributed them to prisoners, destitute widows and orphans, and sometimes to building churches, though Swan insists “it was really more about building up of people.” Women deacons also assisted at baptisms. Baptism was usually by full immersion with the candidate unclothed, and Christian practice required a woman alongside women being baptized.
Around 325 to 350, by Swan’s dating, the vocabulary split into deacon and deaconess. The terms became gender-specific, but she maintains the ministry continued side by side. This is easy to misread. A modern reader who sees the word deaconess may assume a junior or auxiliary role. Swan’s history points the other way: the separate word came after women had already been doing the same diaconal work under the same title.
Readers of Paul will recall Phoebe (Phebe in the KJV), whom Paul commends: “I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the church which is at Cenchrea” (Romans 16:1). The word the KJV renders servant there is the word other translations render deacon. How that verse and this history bear on women’s roles in churches today is a question on which faithful Christians land differently. The history establishes what women did. It does not settle every modern argument about church office.
Olympias in Constantinople
Olympias belongs to the period after the new title took hold. Swan calls her one of the first women referred to with the specifically female term, and says three or four other women in her monastery were also ordained deacons. That monastery, in Constantinople, the city now called Istanbul, held 250 to 300 women who served the poor, preached and taught.
Olympias was, in Swan’s words, “one of the wealthiest women in the Roman Empire.” The size of the fortune matters less than how she spent it. She “gave her money away responsibly,” directing it to orphans and widows, to establishing churches and to supporting missionaries.
Her most consequential loyalty was to John Chrysostom. Swan recounts that Chrysostom publicly condemned the corrupt lifestyle of the imperial family and was driven out of Constantinople. Olympias kept supporting him while he was on the run, with money and with friendship. Swan describes her main ministry as backing his preaching against the empire’s corruption. A famous preacher’s campaign against imperial corruption depended, during his exile, on a woman deacon’s fortune and friendship.
Maria the Harp Player
Swan also preserves a smaller story. Maria had been a liturgical musician in Jerusalem until she felt called to the desert. She moved into a cave in the wilderness between Jerusalem and Jericho, beside a major road.
According to the histories Swan draws on, travelers heard Maria playing her harp and chanting seven times a day, the hours of prayer built from the Psalms and other Scripture. “Sound carries really well in a desert,” Swan notes, so the music may have reached people two or three miles away. After many years the travelers realized they had stopped hearing her. An abbot of a small community sent two men to her cave, where they found she had died. They wrapped her in her robes, dug a grave in her cell and buried her with her harp.
Maria left no writings that survive. She survives because ordinary people on a road noticed her music, then noticed its absence, and someone wrote down what they found. Her memory depended entirely on witnesses.
Teaching the Incarnation in the Villages
The doctrinal fights of the ammas’ own century also preserved some of their names. Swan says part of the reason we know some of these women is the Christological controversies over how Jesus could be fully human and fully divine. “That was a Greek problem,” she says, not a Jewish one, born of a habit of needing to understand before believing.
In Swan’s account, desert ammas and abbas went into villages and preached in support of Athanasius’s position that Jesus is fully human and fully divine. They rejected the alternatives on offer: a Jesus who was a superhuman but not God, or a God who only appeared to be human. The incarnation also gave them a way to reach people with little education. Swan’s summary of their approach: “You don’t wanna down talk to people, but you gotta keep things real.” A God who took on flesh was something a basket-weaver’s customers could grasp. The village preaching connects to the scrap of evidence that survives: these teachers mattered enough in a public dispute that someone recorded their part in it.
How Much Can the Record Bear?
A careful reader should push back. The four great ammas left sayings, not lives. The stories of Olympias and Maria come through later histories. Swan is frank about her motive: she met the Desert Fathers first, “and then I got a little angry,” because she knew there had to be women too. A skeptic can fairly ask whether a recovery project finds what it goes looking for.
The answer is to separate the layers. That women named Sarah, Syncletica, Theodora and Matrona were remembered as ammas, and that their sayings were preserved, is the kind of claim the surviving collections can support. The specific figures here, such as Olympias’s 250 to 300 women and the dating of the deaconess title, are Swan’s historical judgments and should be read as hers. Some broader claims she relays from other scholars, such as that the Christian movement after Jesus “was primarily a woman’s movement,” deserve independent checking rather than repetition as settled fact.
The gaps themselves have an explanation, and it cuts in an unexpected direction. Swan describes literate women copying manuscripts of the Bible, histories, sermons and letters, both to earn a living and to build their own libraries, then sending copies on. In her phrase, “They were also kind of a roving library.” When libraries burned, the losses included the work of the women who had copied them. A thin record of early Christian women is partly the result of losing what those women preserved.
Swan observes that there is “absolutely no evidence that they thought anyone else other than their immediate followers would ever know that they had ever existed.” They did not write for history, and much of their work vanished with the books and communities that held it. What remains, a few sayings, a deacon’s ledger of generosity, a harp heard from a cave, survived because someone thought it worth copying. Recovering these women depends on that same work of reading, copying and passing on what survived.
