Christianity in Africa is older than the transatlantic slave trade, older than European colonies on the continent, and older than the modern idea of race that later made African Christians look like borrowers. In North Africa the faith goes back to the church’s first centuries. In Central Africa, the Kingdom of Congo, a free and independent state, adopted Christianity around 1491 and then built its own schools, its own clergy and its own cathedral. Africans did not simply receive a finished European product. In Congo they investigated the faith, chose it, and organized it themselves.
That second claim is the one most people have never heard. Church historian Dr. David Daniels has spent much of his work on it, and his approach begins with a question that reorders the whole story: “how do we talk about Christianity among Africans before the rise of modern racism?”
Why does the starting date change the story?
Most people meet Black Christians for the first time inside the history of slavery, segregation and civil rights. That history is real. Daniels argues that starting there distorts what we see, because the oppression becomes the lens for everything about the people under it. In his words, “modern racism both skews the way they are looked at and skews the context in which they have to function.”
So Daniels studies the 16th and 17th centuries, when Africans were not yet defined by the racial categories that Europe and the Americas would later harden into law. The earlier date also tests a common claim. If Christianity reached Africans only through slaveholders, the earliest evidence should show Africans meeting the faith as captives. If it shows something else, the claim has to change.
Isn’t the early African church a North African story?
This is the strongest objection, and Lisa Fields raises it directly. Critics hear about Augustine, Athanasius and Tertullian and respond that North Africa is a long way from the West and Central African regions where most enslaved people were taken. The ancient church fathers, they argue, have little to do with the ancestors of Black Americans.
Daniels grants that the objection has “an element of truth.” Christianity in North Africa flourished during roughly the first four to six centuries. Then comes a gap of about a thousand years before the Atlantic slave trade. A straight line from Carthage to the Carolinas is hard to draw.
His answer is to fill the gap with a different region and a later era. Most enslaved Africans brought to the Americas came from the Atlantic coast, and especially from Central Africa. If Christians existed in exactly those places before and during the slave trade, the connection is direct. The question stops being whether ancient Africans were Christian and becomes whether the people actually carried across the Atlantic, or their neighbors and relatives, already knew the faith.
How did the Kingdom of Congo become Christian?
According to Daniels, the Portuguese introduced the idea of Christianity to Congo a little before 1491. Congo was not a colony of Portugal or of any European power, and the introduction did not produce an immediate conversion. Instead, the king of Congo asked to send some of his own young men to Portugal to learn about the religion and about Portuguese society itself.
Those young men stayed in Portugal for more than five years, Daniels says, learning the language and studying the faith. They returned around 1491 and reported to the king. Daniels is careful about whose word persuaded him: “He doesn’t necessarily believe the Portuguese.” The king trusted his own people’s firsthand findings, and then he converted.
That detail is the hinge of the account. A free ruler did not accept a foreign religion on a foreigner’s authority. He commissioned an inquiry, waited years for it, and weighed the testimony of witnesses he trusted. Daniels sums it up plainly: “that’s a voluntary conversion.” The conversion spread to Congo’s nobility, and the king’s son, whom Daniels calls King Alfonso, turned a royal decision into a working church.
What did Congo actually build?
Daniels notes that Alfonso was treated as a peer of the king of Portugal, and he explains why that was possible at the time: “The Portuguese at this time is not shaped by modern racism as we know it.” The two monarchs dealt with each other as rulers, not as master and subject.
Alfonso set up an education system. Citing the historian John Thornton, Daniels says that by 1520 about a thousand students were enrolled, most probably near the capital. The schools were coeducational, and one of the teachers was one of the king’s sisters. Students learned Christian doctrine and at least Portuguese, possibly Latin, along with Kikongo, the local language.
Clergy followed. Congolese men were ordained as priests. Alfonso pressed for a bishop of Congolese descent, and the Pope agreed; the bishop was one of Alfonso’s own sons, Enrique. Around them, Daniels describes catechists, teachers and people attending mass every day. By 1590, one of Alfonso’s successors had the capital, San Salvador, established as an episcopal see, a seat for a cathedral.
Daniels explains the reasoning behind all this building: “the idea of the Congolese is that we are a fully developed Christian, kingdom, empire, and therefore we need to have all the elements that a Christian empire would have.” Congo furnished itself the way a Christian kingdom anywhere would: bishops, cathedrals, chapels, priests, schools and teachers. It was organizing its own church, not waiting on Europe to supply one.
Was Congo the only African Christian community on the coast?
No, but it was the largest and the most independent. Daniels lists others from the same period. The kingdoms of Benin and Warri, in what is now Nigeria, were independent and had Christians, though they did not build the same level of church structure. Cape Verde, a Portuguese colony, developed African priests and laypeople. São Tomé and the area that became Angola, around Luanda, had Christians under colonial structures.
By 1600, Daniels observes, Christianity existed along Africa’s Atlantic coast in two forms: communities inside Portuguese colonial structures, and communities in independent African states, with Congo by far the largest of the second kind. Some African Christianity of this era did grow under colonial power. Congo stands out because it did not. And 1600 comes before the slave trade reached what would become the United States in any serious way.
Could Africans in the 1500s really read?
The schools give the answer. A thousand students by 1520 means a reading public, and Daniels draws out why that matters beyond the schools themselves. Once literacy enters a community, it outlives the institutions that introduced it. Even if a school system collapsed, he says, “literacy doesn’t have to disappear, because children can teach children, parents can teach children, grandparents can teach.”
Daniels adds that this literacy was tied to books, and that Congo had libraries. He suggests the image is hard for many people to accept because of a picture of Africa that leaves out kingdoms like Benin, Warri and Congo. As he puts it, “we can’t imagine libraries being within the Congo in the 16th century.” The documented schools, ordained clergy and a bishop trained for office make the existence of books unsurprising. A church cannot run a school system and ordain priests without them.
The consequence reaches across the ocean. If a Christian, partly literate society existed in a region that supplied many captives, then some of the people taken from it were Christian before they were enslaved. Daniels offers a cautious estimate: perhaps 5 to 10 percent of enslaved Africans were probably Christian, a larger group knew of the faith, and some could already read before arriving in the Americas. He frames the figure with an open “I don’t know,” so it is a historian’s working guess, not a measured statistic.
Did that faith survive the crossing?
Daniels points to people recorded as Congolese or Angolans in early colonies from New Amsterdam and Virginia to the South Carolina low country, Spanish Florida and New Orleans, as early as 1619, and says white colonists recognized a number of them as Christians. In New Amsterdam, some who were held as indentured servants went to court when their terms were not honored, won their freedom, became landholders, and had their children baptized in the Dutch Reformed Church.
Daniels reads those lawsuits as a subtle critique of a submissive Christianity. That is his inference, and the record has limits. A court case shows that these Christians pressed legal claims and won. It does not show what they believed about slavery, and people sue for many reasons. What it does rule out is the picture of African Christians as passive recipients who accepted whatever terms their masters set.
South Carolina offers stronger evidence. Daniels says some low country Christians of Congolese and Angolan background fled toward Spanish Florida, and some joined the Stono Rebellion of the 1730s. According to him, lawyers studying the case reported that some rebels expected Catholic Spain to have ships waiting at Charleston. These were people “willing to fight the system and still recognize themselves as being Christian, because they don’t see the contradiction between Christianity and liberation.”
Slaveholders did use the Bible to demand obedience, and Daniels mentions plantation preachers authorized by them. His point is narrower: the slaveholders’ version was not the only Christianity enslaved Africans knew, and some of them knew an older one first.
How settled is this history?
The Kingdom of Congo’s conversion is well documented. Daniels names scholars who have written on it, including Thornton, whose work goes back to the 1980s, and he recommends the art historian Cécile Fromont’s The Art of Conversion, which uses paintings and drawings, especially from the 17th century, to show how Congolese Christianity was lived.
The link between Congolese Christianity and the shaping of African American Christianity is a different matter. Daniels says plainly: “I’m proposing scholarship that has not become commonly accepted even among African American religious scholars.” Many scholars know Congo existed. Fewer have traced how Congolese and Angolan Christians among the enslaved shaped the faith in North America. He calls it understudied and wishes for a major funded study.
That leaves two levels of confidence. That a free African kingdom chose Christianity and built its own church before the slave trade reached North America is solid history. How far that kingdom’s Christians shaped Black Christianity in America is a serious, evidence-based proposal still awaiting fuller study.
What does this mean for someone thinking about leaving?
Lisa Fields tells Daniels she has met young and older people weighing whether to walk away from Christianity because of the current culture and their frustrations with white evangelicalism. Daniels does not answer by defending white churches. He answers with ancestry.
The common story, he says, might have been true, that Africans in North America met Christianity only through slaveholders. “That could have been the story, but it is not.” The Congolese and their descendants read the Bible for themselves, understood the faith for themselves, and built their own institutions. So Daniels asks: “if their ancestors refuse to let Europeans define for them what Christianity was, why should they?” Letting a racially distorted church define Christianity, he warns, risks letting the same voices define what it means to be human.
Congo shows what refusing that looks like. A king did not take the Portuguese at their word. He sent his own people, waited five years for their report, and believed what they had seen for themselves. The question of whose faith this is can be settled the same way: by going to the evidence and examining it firsthand.
