Tertullian was a Christian writer from Carthage, in North Africa, active around A.D. 200. He is the first Christian known to have written in Latin, so he was the first to give Latin-speaking Christianity a working vocabulary, including the word Trinitas, or Trinity. Most believers have never heard his name, for two reasons. Augustine, who came later from the same African tradition, overshadowed everyone before him. And the standard story of Tertullian’s life, which taught generations to treat him with suspicion, turns out to rest on very little evidence.
His words stayed in use after his name dropped out of sight. The order of events explains how that happened.
A Writer Overshadowed by His Own Heirs
The Latin Christian writers of Roman Africa came one after another. Dr. David Wilhite, who teaches early Christian history at Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University, gives the order: Tertullian first, then Cyprian, then Augustine. All three belong to one North African tradition, and each read the ones before him. That sequence accounts for much of the neglect. If you have Augustine, why go back to the rough first draft?
Wilhite does not dispute Augustine’s stature. He calls Augustine the greatest thinker of the early church and admits, “I always joke that he’s been eclipsed by Augustine.” The joke points to a real distortion. Readers tend to treat the most polished form of a tradition as if it came from nowhere. Augustine wrote in a Latin Christian idiom that already existed. Someone had to build it.
The second reason is reputation. Standard reference works, Wilhite explains, long described Tertullian as a man who late in life joined Montanism, a movement the wider church judged to be outside orthodoxy. If he had left the church, readers could borrow a few of his phrases and ignore the rest. That label shaped how he was received for centuries.
What Survives of the Man
Less than the old encyclopedia entries claimed. Wilhite describes the traditional checklist: Tertullian was a Roman jurist or lawyer, his father was a centurion, he was a priest and he later converted to Montanism. Over the last 40 to 50 years, he reports, specialist scholarship has knocked off each item. “Turns out none of those things are true,” he says.
That is Wilhite’s assessment, voiced strongly. Even in the same conversation he still uses the Montanist label for convenience before calling it “that alleged conversion.” A fair reading is that the old biography can no longer be taken for granted.
What remains is small but solid. Tertullian came from North Africa. Wilhite notes that he claimed Carthage as his home city, spoke of Africa by name and called it his patria, his fatherland. Wilhite’s own research started from that one secure fact. Instead of building on a legal career that may never have existed, he asked what it meant to be African in Roman times and where that shows in Tertullian’s writing.
A few more facts come from Tertullian himself. He was a convert. He never says when or how he came to faith, but he refers back to the event and to the life before it. Wilhite says that earlier life seems to have been sexually promiscuous and a source of shame to him, much as Augustine’s past later was. After conversion he became a severe Christian with little patience for believers at peace with the world.
One detail complicates that severity. At the end of a work on prayer, Wilhite notes, Tertullian asks his readers to remember him in their prayers as a sinner. “So he still saw himself as in need of grace late in life,” Wilhite observes. The strictest voice in the early African church closed a book on prayer by asking for mercy.
Writing Christianity in Latin for the First Time
This is the part of the story that usually goes unnoticed. Christianity’s earliest documents are in Greek. When Tertullian set out to explain and defend the faith in Latin, there was no shelf of Latin Christian books to draw on. Wilhite puts it directly:
— David Wilhite
That explains his reach. A language holds on to its first words. Later Latin theologians could refine Tertullian, correct him or argue with him, but they did so in a vocabulary he had helped set. That is why a writer most Christians cannot name still shapes how Western Christians talk about God.
The work came out of conflict. Wilhite warns that Tertullian is hard to get to know because “he’s always writing against someone.” The combative tone that puts readers off also exposes his thinking. Each time he tells his audience not to say something a certain way, he shows what he takes the right way to be. Wilhite says you can “see his doctrines and his beliefs kind of forged in this fire of debate.” His advice is to keep asking whom Tertullian is arguing against. Answer that, and the meaning usually comes clear.
The firsts go beyond single words. When Wilhite assigns Tertullian to students, he starts with the work on baptism, which he describes as the “first ever treatise devoted solely to a sacrament.” A Christian book on one rite did not exist before Tertullian wrote it.
Naming the Trinity Is Not Inventing It
Tertullian gave the doctrine its Latin name. He did not invent the belief. That difference is the most important correction in this history.
Start with the word. According to Wilhite, “the Latin word Trinitas had never been used before” Tertullian, at least in any surviving evidence. He seems to have coined it to summarize what Christians believed: one God and three persons. The word itself, Wilhite points out, does not appear in the Bible.
Then the formula. Around the year 208, Wilhite notes, Tertullian was already describing God as one in substance and three in persons, using the Latin terms substantia and persona. The Council of Nicaea in 325 and the Council of Constantinople in 381 would later insist on the same pairing, with the oneness carried in Greek by the word homoousios. In Wilhite’s words, Tertullian already had “the exact almost precise verbatim formula” those councils made official, more than a century earlier.
The sequence matters because a popular claim says the Trinity was made up at Nicaea under imperial pressure. The chronology runs against it. An African writer outside any council, with no emperor behind him, was using the formula generations before Nicaea met.
Nor were the councils simply copying Tertullian. Wilhite offers a better explanation for the agreement. He says “it’s pretty remarkable that he was able to anticipate the exact way to describe the way later Christians will officially declare the doctrine of the Trinity.” Then he gives the reason: “And of course, that’s because they’re all reading the same Scriptures and trying to put it in the most precise way.”
That answers the strongest objection. The objection says that if a man coined the word, the doctrine must be a human invention. But naming a thing and inventing it are different acts. Tertullian was naming a pattern in texts far older than he was. Jesus’s charge in Matthew is the clearest example:
“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 28:19).
The verse speaks of one name shared by three. Trinity is a later summary of that pattern, and Christians reading the same verses, in different places and centuries, kept arriving at the same summary.
The word’s source is less clear than its later use. Wilhite calls it something of a mystery. He suggests Tertullian may have borrowed the idea from a group the church regarded as heretical. That group spoke of triads in Greek when describing God, angels and archangels, without anything like the orthodox doctrine. If so, Tertullian took a term from opponents and gave it different content. That is a scholar’s proposal, not a settled fact, but it fits a writer who did so much of his thinking in argument.
How the Vocabulary Traveled
It moved through a chain of African readers. Wilhite finds persuasive the proposal of Patout Burns and Robin Jensen that historians should speak of an African school of early Christianity centered on Carthage, alongside the familiar schools of Alexandria and Antioch.
The case rests on how its members read each other. An early report says Cyprian called each morning for his master, meaning Tertullian, and Wilhite notes that Cyprian’s works show the borrowing. Augustine later did the same with Cyprian. His main early controversy was with the Donatists, fellow North Africans, and Wilhite observes that both sides were essentially arguing over who best interpreted Cyprian.
What set this school apart, in Wilhite’s account, was its concern with the church itself: who holds authority in it, and when a baptism or ordination is valid. Tertullian’s book on baptism stands at the start of that line of questions. Tertullian, Cyprian and Augustine each also came into tension with the bishop of Rome or the Roman view. Latin Christianity did not simply flow outward from Rome. Much of its early vocabulary and argument came from Carthage.
One part of Tertullian’s legacy traveled less well. The rule of faith was the early summary of belief in Father, Son and Spirit that came before the creeds. Alongside it, Wilhite explains, Tertullian spoke just as much about a rule of discipline: prayer, fasting, devotion and giving to the poor. Early Christians cared intensely about right doctrine because a false view of God or Christ put salvation at risk. Yet in Wilhite’s words, “They could never envision separating it from orthopraxis.” The vocabulary for belief came down through the centuries. The insistence that belief and life belong together was often left behind.
The Parts That Are Hard to Defend
An honest history has to include them. Wilhite tells students that Tertullian’s work on women’s dress is where they meet “the good, the bad, and the ugly” in him. Tertullian tells the women in his audience that each is an Eve, calls them the devil’s gateway and comes close to blaming women for men’s sins. Wilhite says plainly that he has “some pretty awful rhetoric when it comes to women” and has “earned himself a pretty bad reputation” for it.
Wilhite reports the rest of the record without using it as an excuse. Read further, and the treatise’s main target is Christian women’s displays of wealth. Some recent rhetorical studies argue his audience largely agreed with him. Elsewhere Tertullian wanted women to prophesy in worship, believed God called them to it and cited the visions of the martyr Perpetua. Wilhite holds both together. The rhetoric is terrible and probably reflects real disrespect in his thinking. And Tertullian still has profound things to say about what it means to be human, for men and women alike.
That is the right way to inherit him. His word for God’s triune life does not depend on his being a good man in every respect. It lasted because Christians reading Scripture kept finding it accurate. His contempt in that treatise has no such support, and it does not need to be kept.
Where the Words Came From
When Christians say Trinity, or speak of God as three persons sharing one substance, they are using language first written by an African convert in Carthage, in arguments with opponents, more than a century before any council made it official. That chronology unsettles two familiar stories at once. One says the church’s central doctrine was invented by imperial councils. The other says Christianity reached Africa as something foreign. On the evidence of dates, a good part of the West’s theological vocabulary moved the other way, from Africa outward. Forgetting Tertullian has meant forgetting where those words came from.
