A committed atheist is rarely argued into faith by someone else’s cleverness. York Moore’s story points to a different starting place. He followed his own atheism honestly until it could not answer a question it had raised itself: why is anything, including the search for truth, worth doing? That failure did not prove Christianity. It made him willing to ask whether Christianity was true. His conversion began there, and only afterward came an encounter and a message.
Most people picture the moment as a debate in which the believer lands a decisive point and the skeptic concedes. Moore’s account does not fit that picture, and the reason is philosophically interesting. The pressure that moved him came from inside his own position.
The Argument Moore Actually Believed
Moore did not drift into unbelief. He was raised in it on purpose. His parents followed an atheist philosopher and named him after her. They homeschooled him because that philosophy treated the state as an enemy of individuality. When he talked to God as a six-year-old, they told him that believers are intellectually weak and that, as he recalls their explanation, “They manufacture this idea of a deity to help them through life. It’s like a mental crutch.”
The crutch charge frames everything that follows. It says belief in God is chosen for comfort and has nothing to do with truth. Moore later went to the University of Michigan with one question in mind, and he chose it because he took his parents’ worldview seriously. In his words, “If there is no God, there’s no transcendence, there’s no ultimate meaning to the universe. Why live?”
He spent three years studying philosophy and psychology on that question. His honors thesis gave his answer: “There is no God. When we die, we cease to exist. And the best that we can hope for is moment to moment pleasure.”
Laid out step by step, his reasoning ran roughly like this:
- There is no God, and nothing exists beyond the physical world.
- Without anything beyond the physical world, there is no meaning that holds for the universe as a whole.
- Death ends the person completely.
- So the most a person can hope for is pleasure in the moment.
- So the timing of one’s death makes no real difference.
Moore drew that last step himself. He reasoned that “it really doesn’t matter if I die and cease to exist tomorrow or a hundred years from now.” Each step can be challenged. The chain is not careless, though. It is what results when someone refuses to borrow meaning that his worldview gives him no way to explain. Moore’s honesty here is the engine of the whole story.
Where the Argument Turns Against Itself
The premise people overlook sits in the activity, not the conclusion. Moore did not arrive at nihilism by lounging. He arrived by working. He calls himself a striver, always trying to do well at school, at work, in his fraternity and with friends. The thesis itself was an act of striving: three years of disciplined effort to get the answer right.
Walking to his car after submitting the paper, Moore says he heard a voice he would later identify as the Holy Spirit asking a question he could not dismiss: “Why do anything, why do anything, why strive? And I didn’t have an answer for that.”
Set the experience aside for a moment and look at the logic of the question. If the thesis is correct, then getting the thesis correct had no more worth than getting it wrong or never asking. The conclusion cannot recommend itself. Nihilism says nothing finally matters. The nihilist argued as though the truth about the matter mattered a great deal. Those two commitments pull against each other.
A careful reasoner should be precise about what this shows. It does not refute nihilism. A claim can be true and still be unlivable. What it shows is narrower: the worldview could not account for the value Moore was already placing on truth. He had two options. He could call his commitment to truth one more illusion, in which case his own thesis loses its claim on him. Or he could grant that something does matter, in which case he owes an account of where that mattering comes from. Either way, the position has stopped being self-sufficient. That is the sense in which it fails on its own terms.
Isn’t This Despair Rather Than Evidence?
This is the strongest objection, and it comes in two parts.
First, plenty of atheists live lives full of purpose and never end up where Moore did. Many argue, as some existentialist thinkers did, that human beings make their own meaning. Second, a belief being unbearable says nothing about whether it is false. Reality is under no obligation to be comforting. If Moore’s despair pushed him toward God, that looks like exactly the crutch his parents warned about.
Both points deserve a fair hearing. The first is a live dispute that Moore’s story does not settle. The question between him and a contented secular reader is whether chosen meaning answers why strive? or only restates it as because I decided to. Can a meaning I invented bind me on the night I no longer want it? Thoughtful atheists answer that differently.
The second point is correct as stated, and Moore’s own behavior respects it. What he did next is hard to explain as comfort-seeking. He did not reach for the most soothing religion available. He went looking for the claim he most feared would be true.
Why Christianity in Particular
Moore says he had read sacred texts from several traditions, including the Quran, and surveyed the world’s religions. He reasoned that if he were wrong about most of them, he would probably be fine. One claim was different:
“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment” (Hebrews 9:27).
Moore’s conclusion: “I knew that if the Christians were right, I was gonna be in big trouble.”
This is a calculation about stakes. It told Moore where to look first. It could say nothing about what he would find there. A skeptic is right that high stakes make a claim urgent without making it credible, and Moore seems to have understood that, because his next move was to demand reasons. His choice also cuts against his parents’ charge in his own case. By his account, he aimed his search at the one God whose existence would put him under judgment.
What the Cultural Christians Missed
Moore interviewed Christians about why they believed and came away disappointed. “I found that the vast majority of Christians have absolutely no reason to believe in the God that they say they believe in,” he says, and he calls most of them cultural Christians.
One conversation stands out. He asked a pastor friend named Dave how he knew God exists. In Moore’s telling, Dave answered that it did not really matter whether the Bible was God’s word or whether Jesus was born of a virgin, since no one could know such things. Moore’s reaction was immediate: “He’s thrown out the entire foundation of his belief system. He has nothing to say to me.”
Moore’s thesis depended on the answer to one question being no. A Christian’s faith depends on the same question being yes. Both treat whether God exists as the question that decides everything else. Dave’s position kept the community and vocabulary of faith while setting that question aside. To Moore, that looked like the same emptiness with religious decoration. As he put it, “If there is no God, just be an atheist.”
The implication for anyone trying to answer an atheist is plain. A person who has followed unbelief to its end is asking whether anything is true. Belonging, tradition or moral uplift offered without reasons will not reach him. Dave’s answer did not soften Moore. It made Christianity look less serious than his own atheism.
The Wrong Kind of Test
Out of options, Moore began to pray in his own fashion. “Never let an atheist tell you that we don’t pray. We all pray,” he says. For days or weeks he crossed his arms each morning and dared whatever god might exist to show itself on demand, in some unmistakable public sign.
Looking back, Moore believes God was speaking during that time and that he could not perceive it, because he was trying to define God in a very specific way, on his own timetable and terms. This is a real philosophical issue. What kind of evidence could answer the claim being made? If God is a personal being, a test that treats him like a lab sample that must perform when summoned may be the wrong instrument. That does not mean anything counts as evidence. It means the method has to fit the kind of thing being investigated.
When the Reasons Ran Out
On December 24, 1989, Moore decided there was no God and no meaning, and he aimed his car at a viaduct near his home in Inkster, Michigan, intending to die. At that moment, he says, “the presence and the power of Jesus filled that car,” and he was steered to safety. He is careful about what that did and did not accomplish: “That experience wasn’t enough to convert me to Christianity. It was enough to get me home that night.”
The next morning, he says, the same voice told him that God exists, that God is the reason he exists and that God had kept him alive. Moore’s comment on the first two is a philosopher’s comment: “Those two data points for a philosopher are all that you need.” He prayed, “God, if you can take my life and make anything out of it from this day forward, I’m gonna live for you.” Yet he still lacked content. That day he was telling friends, “I don’t know which God yet, but I’m living for God.” The content came that night from the slimmest of the books Dave had given him. It explained that Jesus died to take away sin, rose on the third day and offers forgiveness to those who confess him as Lord. Moore says he gave his life to Jesus Christ that night.
Moore’s account includes a night when despair nearly ended his life. If you are in that place yourself, please do not carry it alone. Reach out any time, and tell someone you trust today.

Does a Private Experience Prove Anything to Anyone Else?
No, and Moore does not use it that way. An experience in a car is not evidence a reader can inspect. A skeptic can grant that Moore is sincere and still doubt his interpretation of what happened. That is a reasonable response.
Two things in the account remain open to anyone’s examination. The first is the reasoning: whether a worldview with no meaning beyond the physical world can explain why truth and effort are worth anything. A reader can test that argument without trusting Moore’s experience at all. The second is the claim the slim book made. The gospel rests on a public, historical claim about the resurrection of Jesus. Moore’s account does not argue that historical case, so this piece shows where his inquiry started. Whether the resurrection happened is a further question with its own evidence to weigh.
The order matters too. The encounter answered his question about existence and meaning. Only the message told him who God is and what he has done. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, drew a theological point from this. No one person walked Moore to the gospel in that moment, which reminded her that “God really doesn’t need us. He uses us” and that “salvation is his job.”
Where Conversion Begins
Moore himself warns against treating his story as the template. He calls his dramatic testimony the bad story and says he wants his children to have the better one: a home where faith is lived and taught. He also says, “I think the majority of people come to faith in Christ because they have a relationship with a person who is just an authentic, transparent person who’s walking the walk.”
His case still clarifies something about the committed atheist in particular. What moved him was not a stronger argument from outside. It was the moment he stopped borrowing meaning his worldview could not supply and asked, without flinching, whether anything was true. Christians cannot manufacture that moment. They can be the kind of people who have something to say when it arrives. Dave had faith without reasons, and Moore walked away. A Christian with reasons and an honest life gives a person at the end of his own argument something real to examine.
