A Hindu friend is usually looking for liberation, not a rescue from death or a verdict of “not guilty.” Across Hindu traditions the common aim is moksha, the release of the soul from the cycle of birth and rebirth. The road toward it is practice, and the weight carried along that road is karma. Rahil Patel, a Hindu monk for 20 years before he came to Christ, argues that this is why grace is where the gospel connects. Grace answers the exact burden a lifetime of practice could not lift.
That answer only makes sense once a few ideas are in place, in the right order. Most Christians skip the first ones and go straight to the conclusion, which is why so many of these conversations stall.
Why Do Christian Answers So Often Miss?
The first lesson is about questions. Patel tells of a mission event in south India where Christians got permission to write on city walls and painted “Jesus is the answer” again and again. Days later, local Hindus got permission for other walls and wrote back, in effect, “What’s the question?”
The story describes a real habit. Even prominent theologians, in Patel’s experience, look at Hindu religions and ask Christian questions, hoping to find Christian answers. His alternative begins somewhere else: “what is it that a Hindu seeks?” Only after that does it make sense to ask how Christ fulfills it.
Death is the clearest example. Patel once picked up a well-meant apologetics book to give a Hindu friend and found a chapter arguing that Jesus is the greatest teacher because he defeated death. His response was blunt: “Hindus don’t care about death.” When he became a Christian, he found it strange to hear believers celebrating that death is defeated, “because for a Hindu death isn’t a finality.” In a world of rebirth, death is a transition. Announcing its defeat answers a fear your friend may not have.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, made the same point about listening. If Christians want to reach people and love them, she said, “we need to listen to what their background is, what their experience is, and how they see the world.” Listening is how you learn which part of the gospel your friend is ready to hear first.
What Does It Mean That Hinduism Runs on Practice?
Here is the first concept most Christians lack. Patel puts the difference this way: “Christianity is an orthodoxy.” Hinduism, by contrast, “is an orthopraxy.” Orthodoxy means right belief. Orthopraxy means right practice. Christianity has a founder, a canon and creeds. The Hindu religions have no single founder and no single book, and their followers are not especially concerned with when their scriptures were written.
Patel even prefers the plural, “Hindu religions,” because the traditions often contradict each other. Some eat meat and others do not. Some believe God has a form and others do not. All are Hindu. So when Fields asked him for the basic tenets, he gently pushed back on the question itself: “But there aren’t tenets.” Instead, “There are practices for a certain aim.”
The aim is moksha. The practices vary: temple attendance, giving, fasting, meditation, devotion. So instead of asking a Hindu friend what they believe, ask what they practice in pursuit of liberation. The answer tells you what they are seeking and what they fear they are failing at.
Authority works differently too. In Patel’s words, across Hindu traditions “the guru often trumps scripture.” People go to a guru, who interprets the text for them, more than to the text itself. Reverence for scripture is real (it is wrapped in cloth and kept off the floor), but authority sits with the teacher. A Christian who opens with “the Bible says” may be assuming a kind of textual authority that is not yet part of the friend’s world.
Hindu traditions also hold a deep respect for mystery and not knowing. Christians who arrive with very definite answers may feel perfectly normal to themselves, “but to a lot of Hindus, it could come across as arrogant.” Patel treats that as a cultural issue. Conviction is fine. The tone of the first approach is what needs care.
What Is Karma, and Why Is It Heavy?
The second concept is karma. Many Westerners treat it as a slogan: what goes around comes around. Patel thinks that popular version is not far off. The weight lies in how it works.
In Hindu thought, philosophically, the chief issue is not the heart, as Christians would put it. It is what you take in from the world through your senses. Patel’s example is a traveler in an airport washroom who glimpses a magazine he should not look at. The image enters through his eyes and lodges in his mind. Without the discipline to remove the thought, it goes deeper, until he returns and looks at the magazine on purpose. That deliberate act is karma that attaches to the soul. It shapes what happens in the future and in the next life, and it has its say at the time of death.
An analogy helps if you see where it fails. Think of karma as a ledger of deposits on the soul, each action adding to the balance that decides your next birth. The picture captures the accumulation and the dread. It breaks at one point, and the point matters: a ledger implies a bookkeeper, someone who could choose to cancel a debt. Karma, as Patel describes it, is a deposit that follows from the act itself. No one keeping the account could forgive it. That is why practice feels endless.
The burden surfaces most in suffering. A practicing Hindu in the West will see doctors and take medicine like anyone else. But facing pain or tragedy, the thought arrives that this is because of past karma. Even Hindus in America who have absorbed some Judeo-Christian assumptions, Patel observes, turn to karma and past lives when there is a real crisis.
Why Does Sacrifice Make Sense Where Forgiveness Does Not?
Now the bridge becomes visible. Talk of sin and forgiveness, in Patel’s experience, is “a concept, so alien to a Hindu” that it often produces confusion. Hindus hearing that Christ died because they need forgiveness have asked him, in effect, “Forgiveness from what?”
Sacrifice, though, is familiar, and Patel calls it central to Hindu practice for about 3,000 years. Ghee, the clarified butter in Indian cooking, is also poured into sacrificial fires at weddings, business openings and funerals. According to Patel, the Vedas describe it as the purest material, offered to gain safe passage for the task at hand. Purity offered for passage is already part of the vocabulary.
So Patel shapes the question this way: “what if someone pure, like Christ, was sacrificed for your karma?” A Hindu friend can follow that, where “he paid for your sins” often lands as a puzzle.
Scripture speaks in exactly these terms of purity and once-for-all offering. Peter tells believers they were redeemed:
“With the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.” (1 Peter 1:19)
Hebrews says believers “are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all” (Hebrews 10:10). Both letters were written to people who knew sacrificial worship, and both argue that Christ’s offering does what repeated offerings could not. That is the logic Patel is reaching for.
Isn’t This Watering Down the Gospel?
This is the misconception to clear up. Some Christians worry that talking about karma instead of sin trades the gospel for a Hindu idea. The worry is fair, because karma and sin are different concepts. Karma, as Patel explains it, is an impersonal consequence that attaches to the soul. Sin, in Scripture, is an offense against a personal God who can forgive.
So the overlap is narrower than it first appears. The airport traveler shares with a Christian the sense that his act was wrong and that it left something on him he cannot clear. Jesus would call that act lust. But the traveler does not yet think of it as an offense against someone. That step is new information, and the Christian has to supply it. The bridge rests on a shared burden. It does not rest on a shared view of guilt.
Patel does not suggest the conversation stays at karma. A Hindu friend still needs to hear why they need someone pure like Christ to die for them. Karma is the doorway. Through it lies the fuller gospel: a personal God, a real offense against him, a Savior who rose bodily, and forgiveness received by faith. The starting point moves while the message stays whole.
There is also a limit on the evidence. Patel speaks from one influential tradition and from his own 20 years inside it, and he himself insists the Hindu religions differ widely. Some traditions center on devotion, and many Hindus in the West are not practicing at all. Your friend may not carry karma the way his airport example does. So check before you build on it. Ask whether karma is something they think about, what they practice and why, and whether anything in their life feels like a weight they cannot put down. Their answers, not this article, tell you where the door is.
A related misreading is the claim that Hindus worship 330 million gods. Patel calls the idea insane and describes belief in “one God that has different incarnations that comes on earth at different times.” Much of what Christians see at house shrines is honor, like the petals and lamp his grandmother offered him and his wife after their wedding. “So when a Christian sees that, they see, oh, they’re just worshiping different gods, but it’s honor.” He is honest about the real difference, though. In that world, the one God does not mind prayer through a guru or angelic beings. The God of Scripture is jealous for the whole heart. Knowing which difference is real keeps you from condemning the wrong thing.
Why Is Grace the Hardest Part?
The final step comes from Patel’s own life. In the monastery he fasted five to seven times a month, 36 hours without food or water each time, woke at five for a cold bath, and meditated, cleaned and studied until late at night. “And I thought, all these things I’m doing, and yet there’s no internal change.” Monks of 40 years showed no change either. His guru told him it would take time and that he thought too much.
After years of growing doubt, a Bible read in secret and a Sunday morning in a London church, he gave his life to Christ in 2011. Later, at a prayer meeting, he was filled with the Holy Spirit and with a joy he had never been able to produce. That was when he understood what Hindus in their practice really wanted. What great Hindu thinkers could not reach through karma and practice, God gave him through grace.
Then came the difficulty: “karma and grace are opposites. That’s the most difficult thing to digest for a Hindu, is grace.” Patel describes his first response to being told he was loved: “You are loved. I’m like, what do I do for Jesus? Which Bible college?” He heard Jesus asking something else entirely: “can you just sit and learn to be loved and love me?” And, he adds, “that took two years to at least start to settle into my heart.”
Paul states the same contrast:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.” (Ephesians 2:8–9)
For someone raised on orthopraxy, the second half of that sentence is the shock. Hindus work so hard to please God that when you simply tell them they are loved, “It’s like, what does that even mean?” Expect that response. It usually means a person has met an idea that cuts against everything they were trained to do, and they need time with it.
Jesus’s invitation addresses that tired person directly:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)
That is closer to what a Hindu friend is seeking than an argument about death.
What Should Christians Bring Besides Arguments?
Patel’s last counsel is aimed at Christians themselves. He thinks many Westerners go East because Western Christians often offer only a cerebral, linear faith, which he calls not wrong but incomplete. Christian tradition has its own practices of stillness and solitude. Scripture commands meditation on God’s law day and night (Joshua 1:8) and says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). Patel draws a clear line: “We don’t empty our minds. We fill it with truth.” Then he adds, “But we do sit still with God.”
A friend from a practice-based world will notice whether your faith has practices. Patel even suggests that instead of opening with “I’m a Christian,” which may simply signal “Westerner,” you might say “Jesus is my guru.” He explains that “the word guru is one who takes you from darkness into light.” The phrase earns a question, and the fuller confession of Jesus as Son of God comes in the answer.
That is the shape of the whole approach. Your friend practices toward liberation and may carry a weight that practice cannot clear. Christ offers what no amount of practice can produce: a pure sacrifice made once, and a love that is received before anything is earned.
