Exodus 20:7 does forbid careless use of God’s name, but it forbids more than that. The verb behind “take” is the ordinary Hebrew word for carrying or bearing. Read in its covenant setting, the command concerns how God’s people carry his name before the watching nations. Speech is part of that. The whole life is the larger part.
That is the reading Dr. Carmen Imes, an associate professor at Biola University, reached in her doctoral research on this one commandment. It deserves a careful hearing, because it changes the command from a rule about vocabulary into a description of who God’s people are. The way to test it is to start where any reading has to start: with the verse itself.
What does Exodus 20:7 actually say?
The King James Version renders it this way: “Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain” (Exodus 20:7).
Three small features of the sentence matter. First, the verb. “Take” translates the Hebrew verb nasa, which means to lift, carry or bear. It is a common, physical word. People bear loads with it. Priests bear objects with it. It can also describe lifting something up with the voice, which is part of why the command has long been heard as a rule about speech.
Second, the phrase “in vain.” It translates the Hebrew word shav, which elsewhere in the Old Testament describes what is empty, worthless or false. To do something “in vain” in this sense is to do it emptily or deceptively. The KJV’s archaic wording is a fair rendering, but modern readers often hear only “carelessly,” which is narrower than the word.
Third, the warning. Most of the Ten Commandments stand without an attached consequence. This one carries a sanction: the LORD will not hold the offender guiltless. Whatever this command forbids, the text treats it as grave.
None of these observations settles the meaning by itself. A verb’s range does not decide which sense a given sentence uses. The surrounding passage has to do that work.
Where does the command sit in the story?
The Ten Commandments are not free-floating rules. They open with a sentence about history: “I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage” (Exodus 20:2). The commands follow a rescue that has already happened.
The chapter before makes the setting even clearer. At Sinai, God tells Israel that if they keep his covenant, “ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation” (Exodus 19:5-6). Israel’s identity is relational and public. They belong to God, and they stand among the nations as his priests.
Imes insists that this order rules out the common idea that Israel earned salvation through the law: “The law was a way for them to live out their new identity as the people of God.” So the third commandment speaks to a people who already carry God’s name, and its question is how they will carry it.
Why would a rule about cursing sit so near the top?
Imes starts from a simple observation about placement. The command comes right after the prohibition of other gods and images. If its main concern were blurting out God’s name when you stub a toe, she says, “it would’ve been a little strange for God to put such a small thing near the top” of the list.
Her answer is structural. She reads the first commands and the third as a pair: “Those are two sides of the covenant formula.” The formula she means is the repeated covenant promise, I will be your God and you will be my people. The opening commands guard the first half: Israel owes God exclusive allegiance. The name command guards the second half: Israel is to live as recognizably his. As Imes puts it, “other people can tell you belong to God by the way that you live.”
This is an interpretive proposal, and it should be named as one. But it fits the passage. The Decalogue moves from God’s identity, to Israel’s loyalty, to Israel’s conduct. A command about how Israel bears God’s identity in public sits naturally at the hinge.
What does it mean to carry a name?
In Scripture, a name is more than a label. It stands for a person’s identity and reputation. To be called by someone’s name is to be publicly associated with them.
The Pentateuch uses this language of Israel directly. After the priestly blessing, God says, “And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them” (Numbers 6:27). Deuteronomy 28:10 speaks of the nations seeing that Israel is called by the name of the LORD. The name is placed on the people, and the nations can see it.
Imes offers an image for this. “It’s as if God has put his name on them, like tattooed them, with this invisible tattoo saying, you are mine.” The mark carries a charge: “you need to represent me well among the nations.” On this reading, to bear the name in vain is to carry it emptily, to wear God’s identity while living in a way that tells lies about him.
She grounds the idea in a visible object. The high priest wore a gold plate engraved “HOLINESS TO THE LORD” (Exodus 28:36). Imes observes that “Israel’s high priest actually wore a sign on his forehead that said, holy belonging to Yahweh.” She then turns to Deuteronomy 14:1-2, where God calls Israel his children and a people holy to himself, chosen above the nations, and therefore forbids them to cut themselves or shave their heads for the dead. Her reading of that passage is that “what’s true of the high priest is true of the whole nation of Israel.” The whole people wear what the priest wore. The name, she says, is supposed to “work its way out into everything they do.”
The verb supports the picture. In Exodus 28:12, the same Hebrew verb describes Aaron bearing the names of Israel’s tribes on his shoulders before the LORD. Bearing a name is something a representative does with his whole person, not only his mouth. Imes compares it to a team wearing school jerseys at an away game: once the name is on you, your conduct becomes a statement about whoever it belongs to.
Isn’t the traditional reading about oaths and speech?
This is the strongest objection, and it has real textual support. Many interpreters, ancient and modern, read Exodus 20:7 primarily as a prohibition of false oaths: invoking God’s name to back a lie or an empty promise. Leviticus 19:12 points that way: “And ye shall not swear by my name falsely, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.” Since nasa can describe lifting something with the voice, the speech reading has a natural foothold in the verb. Other readers extend the command to magical use of the divine name, or to irreverent speech generally, which is how most Christians first learn it.
These readings are not foolish. In a world where oaths sealed contracts and court testimony, swearing falsely by God’s name was a serious public evil. The attached warning about guilt fits that reading well.
Imes does not dismiss speech. She is direct about it: “So of course, that would include the way we talk about him or the way we use his name in speaking it, but it’s way bigger than that.” Her argument is about scope, not replacement. A false oath is one way to carry God’s name emptily. So is a priest who serves at the altar while exploiting worshipers, or a nation that claims God’s holiness while oppressing the poor.
So the honest summary is this. Faithful interpreters differ on how wide the command reaches. The speech reading and the oath reading are long established. The representational reading is Imes’s argued proposal, built on the verb’s ordinary sense, the covenant structure of Exodus 19-20, and the priestly imagery of the Pentateuch. It does not erase the narrower readings. It explains why they matter: misusing God’s name in speech is serious because the name stands for God himself, and the people carrying it are meant to show who he is.
How is bearing the name different from bearing the image?
Readers often connect this idea to Genesis 1, where humanity is made in God’s image. Imes says that is the question she has been asked more than any other. She sees real overlap: both are representative roles. As God’s image, humanity represents him to creation and stewards it so that life can flourish.
But she draws a firm line: “Every human being is the image of God, but only the covenant people bear God’s name.” The image belongs to all people by creation. The name belongs to God’s covenant people by calling. She also insists the image was not lost at the fall, pointing to Genesis 5 and 9, where it still describes humanity.
Why the second role? Imes suggests “God needed a people to bear his name because his image bearers didn’t do their job.” The name-bearing people exist to help restore the rest of humanity to its proper place before God. That gives the third commandment a missionary edge. Israel’s conduct was meant to be a public display of God’s character for the nations’ sake.
Does this apply to Christians, or only to Israel?
The command was first addressed to Israel at Sinai. Its historical meaning belongs there. Any application to Christians has to be built on that meaning, not read back into it.
Imes argues that the New Testament widens the circle. In her reading of Acts 15, “you don’t have to be Jewish to bear God’s name.” At the Jerusalem council, James reports that God has visited the Gentiles “to take out of them a people for his name” (Acts 15:14). Christians hold different views on how Israel and the church relate, and this article does not settle that question. But Acts 15 does speak of a people for God’s name drawn from the nations, and that language connects naturally to Sinai.
If that connection holds, the implications are concrete. Imes says the Bible shows “what I do is everybody’s business,” because God’s people serve as his representatives and others judge him by what they see. That includes how believers speak to and about others online, where the name is carried as surely as anywhere else. She is careful about motive. The call raises the bar for obedience, she says, “Not because we’re earning our salvation, but because we have the most important mission in all of history to carry out.” That keeps the order of Exodus 20 intact: rescue first, then the life that displays it.
The command also explains why public misrepresentation of God drives people away from faith. When leaders and institutions mishandle abuse or money, or fail to live by what they preach, the damage reaches past their own reputations. Imes puts it plainly: “people are walking away from God because of what they see in people” who claim to follow Jesus. Those failures are real and grievous, and they are not the same as the failure of Christ. But they wound so deeply because they misrepresent the God whose name is worn.
What the command finally asks
Read in its setting, Exodus 20:7 asks a redeemed people to carry God’s name truthfully. Speech is included, and false oaths are a central case. But the reach of the command is as wide as the life of the one who bears the name.
That also explains the warning about guilt. A name carried emptily does not stay private. It makes a claim about God that others hear and believe. The commandment guards God’s reputation by guarding the lives of the people who carry it.
