Bishop Vaughn McLaughlin, founder and senior pastor of the Potter’s House International Ministries in Jacksonville, has a saying that sounds at first like a slip of the tongue. He does not practice what he preaches. He preaches what he practices. The change is about order. In the familiar version, the words set the standard and the life tries to keep up. In his version, the life comes first and the message reports what has already been lived. That moves the real test of faith out of the sermon and into the rest of the week.
Here is how he says it:
It would be easy to hear that as a clever pulpit line and move on. But the reversal carries an argument about what faith is and how anyone, including you, could tell whether it is real.
What actually changes when you flip the phrase?
Start with the assumption hidden inside the familiar saying. “Practice what you preach” treats speech as the place where the standard lives. You announce what a Christian should be, and then your life is graded by how close it comes. Under that arrangement the most practical goal is to keep the gap small enough that nobody notices. The words lead, and the life chases them.
McLaughlin puts the weight somewhere else. He still values words. He locates the power in the manifestation, in the doing. Talk is the report, and the life is the event being reported. If nothing happened, there is nothing to say.
It matters where he said this. Lisa Fields had raised a specific problem: that online, it is possible to describe the work that justice requires without doing any of it. In her words, “we can be social media advocates and not be actually doing the work.” McLaughlin’s answer started with irritation at “all these people that just talking it and ain’t walking it,” and the reversal came next. So the line is first a response to a particular habit: speaking about what should be done as if speaking were the doing.
That habit belongs to more than activists and pastors. Anyone can build a reputation for caring about something by talking about it well. The flip asks a blunt question of all of us. If you were only allowed to speak about what you have actually done, how much would you have to say?
Why should knowing God look like anything at all?
McLaughlin grounds the idea in a pair of old terms. Orthodoxy means right belief. Orthopraxy means right practice. He glosses them as “what we know and what we do,” and he argues that the two belong together. Lisa Fields described his ministry as the place where the two meet, with what you believe coming out in your actions.
He ties that to a verse. Speaking of the case “if what we know doesn’t affect what we do,” McLaughlin turns to Daniel. In the KJV, Daniel 11:32 reads: “And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits.”
The wording is plain. The people who know God act. Daniel 11 is visionary writing about a long series of conflicts between kings, and many interpreters connect this verse to a time when faithful Jews were pressured to abandon the covenant. In that setting, the action is faithfulness under cost: some are bought off with flattery, and the people who know their God stand firm.
That keeps McLaughlin’s principle from shrinking into a call to stay busy. The verse does not tell every reader to build programs. It describes people whose knowledge of God showed up when it was tested. Carrying that into your own life is application, and it is a fair one: knowledge of God that never shows up anywhere does not resemble the knowledge the verse describes.
What does a life that preaches look like on a Monday?
McLaughlin is concrete about this. “I didn’t get saved to sit down and do nothing. I didn’t get saved to preach on a Sunday.” Sunday is not where the Christian life mostly happens for him. “It’s life after the benediction.”
His test is a short list of questions: “Anointed is when I wake up, where I go, what I do. Am I impacting? Am I influencing? Am I adding value to somebody?” He also names what he refuses to measure: more wealth, a bigger house, a better car, better clothes. In their place he asks, “Who am I helping? Who am I enhancing? What am I doing? How does the gospel impact lives? How do I meet the felt needs of people?”
Those questions point outward. The familiar version of the saying keeps attention on my own consistency. McLaughlin asks whether anyone is better off because I was there.
He links this to what he calls the Luke 10 model. In Luke 10, Jesus sends out seventy disciples with instructions to enter towns, accept hospitality, eat what is set before them and care for the sick. Luke 10:9 records the order: “And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you.” The healing comes first in the instruction, and the announcement follows it. McLaughlin sums up the pattern as blessing people, eating with them, listening, meeting felt needs and then telling them the kingdom of God is among them. He adds a familiar saying: “Nobody wants to know how much you know until they know how much you care.”
Luke 10 describes a specific sending of specific disciples, so it works better as a pattern than as a fixed method. The order inside it still fits the reversal. The message about the kingdom comes from people whose care has already been visible.
McLaughlin offers his own church as an example of practice coming first. He says the church employs over 200 people full time, with 25 to 30 percent of them ex-offenders who could not find work anywhere else, and that he chairs a local chapter of Mad Dads, a group that goes to the scene when someone is shot. These are his own descriptions, so they show what he means more than they prove what happened. That limit is part of his point, though. The people in his city are in a position to check his claims, and his Sunday words stand or fall with what they see during the week.
Doesn’t this make my performance the standard instead of Scripture?
This is the strongest objection. If you only preach what you practice, the preacher’s own life seems to become the ceiling. Scripture asks more of every believer than any believer has yet lived. Read strictly, the flip could shrink preaching down to the size of the preacher.
Three things in McLaughlin’s own account push against that reading.
The first is where the practice comes from. He says he was 26, had never heard the gospel, and cried out to God alone in his living room. Nothing he had done earned that encounter. What followed was its fruit: “I do what I do now, empowered by the gospel.” Paul sets out the same order in Ephesians 2:8-10: “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.” Grace comes first, and the good works are what believers were made to walk in. Preaching what you practice describes what grace produces. It is no way to qualify for grace.
The second is what keeps the practice honest. McLaughlin does not treat his life as the final authority. He insists on knowing what the Bible actually says, and he describes his church launching “a war on biblical illiteracy.” When Lisa Fields brought up his illustration about counterfeit money, he finished the thought: people trained to spot fakes are not handed stacks of counterfeits to study. “They show ’em the real thing.” Scripture remains the real thing a life is measured against. The flip changes the order of speaking and living, and the Word stays the standard over both.
The third is accountability. McLaughlin says he answers to an eldership and to other pastors and leaders, and he connects this to the biblical image of a multitude of counselors. “And that’s why I find my safety.” Proverbs 11:14 puts it in the KJV: “Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Proverbs offers wise principles rather than guarantees, but this one applies directly. A person who measures themselves by their own practice needs other people close enough to say when the practice has drifted.
So the reversal is narrower than the objection fears. Its target is talk that has never been tested by action. You can still preach the parts of Scripture you are growing into, as long as you are honest that you are still growing into them.
Isn’t pointing to your own good works a kind of pride?
McLaughlin seems to feel this tension himself. When Lisa Fields asked about his work, he admitted, “It’s difficult for me, even right now sitting here talking about what we do.” He pointed out that you do not see him putting up billboards advertising the ministry, and he appealed to Christ, who in the words of Philippians 2:7 “made himself of no reputation.”
Scripture holds both sides of this. Jesus says in Matthew 5:16, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” He also warns in Matthew 6:1, “Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.” The works are meant to be seen, and they are not meant to be done for the sake of being seen. The difference is direction. One points people to the Father, and the other points them to you.
McLaughlin’s guardrail is local faithfulness. “You have to remain faithful to your immediate surrounding, your own little Jerusalem. Take care of it first before you try to go to the ends of the world and make a name for yourself.” The language echoes Acts 1:8, where the witness of the apostles begins in Jerusalem and moves outward. Acts describes how the mission unfolded, and McLaughlin draws a practical caution from it: the people nearest to you are where your practice is first tested, and they are the hardest to impress with a reputation.
Why would other people’s faith depend on how I live?
Here the question stops being only personal. Lisa Fields observed that many people who walk away are leaving something other than the faith itself. “They’ve seen counterfeits of Christianity and not biblical Christianity,” she said. “And so they’re rejecting counterfeits.”
McLaughlin offered an example from his memory of Malcolm X’s memoir. As he recalled it, Malcolm’s father “was a Baptist preacher that wasn’t a very good one, and had mannerisms and lifestyles that didn’t match what the Bible taught as far as morality is concerned.” That is McLaughlin’s summary from memory, and readers who want the details should go to the memoir itself. The point he draws from it does not depend on the details: a gap between word and life is never purely private. Other people read it as information about the faith.
The positive side follows. “This is not an oppressive book, this is not an oppressive message,” McLaughlin says of the gospel, and he wants the life of the church to make that visible. “Imagine if every church was as concerned about their community as they ought to be, and everybody was manifesting as they ought to be, that would shut the mouth of a whole lot of people.” Peter wrote something similar to believers living under suspicion in 1 Peter 2:15: “For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men.”
There is a limit here. A faithful life does not prove Christianity true. Whether Jesus rose from the dead has to be answered on its own evidence. What a consistent life can do is remove a false reason for rejecting the gospel, by showing that the people who claim the message live as if it were true. McLaughlin pairs the two on purpose: knowing what the Word says, and living in a way that matches it. Either one alone leaves the counterfeit standing.
So why is your life the real test?
Your conduct earns nothing from God. Your life matters as a test because it is the one place where your beliefs become visible, to others and to you. A conviction that never reaches your schedule, your money, your neighbors or your temper is hard to tell apart from an opinion. Daniel’s faithful people were known by what they did when it cost them. The seventy in Luke 10 brought healing before they brought the announcement. The order runs through every text McLaughlin reaches for.
The familiar saying asks whether your life lives up to your words. McLaughlin’s reversal asks a harder question: if your words were only allowed to describe what your life has already done, what would you be able to say about Jesus this week?
