Yes, and you are not the only one carrying it. The Christian hip-hop artist Da’ T.R.U.T.H., born Emanuel Lambert, says he has walked through four distinct seasons of doubt in his life, including a stretch in which he genuinely doubted whether God exists at all. He does not perform a certainty he does not have, and he does not treat doubt as a badge of honor either. What carried him through was not a breakthrough argument. It was prayer he kept offering even when he could not bring himself to open his Bible, and a willingness to research his questions instead of stuffing them down.
Is Doubt a Sign That Something Is Wrong With Your Faith?
Start with the fear underneath the question. Many believers assume that doubt means their faith is broken, or that something is spiritually wrong with them in particular, since the people around them on Sunday morning seem so sure. Da’ T.R.U.T.H. is candid that doubt has been part of his own experience: four separate seasons, one of them serious enough to include doubting God’s existence. He points to the Bible’s own warning about a person who doubts being “like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed” (James 1:6), so he is not pretending doubt is risk-free or something to chase.
But he refuses to pretend it does not happen, and that refusal is the more important move.
“It is a reality for many of us that we go through those seasons of doubt.”
— Da’ T.R.U.T.H.
If doubt were proof of a broken faith, a meaningful share of the people sitting in the pews around you would be disqualified, including some of the artists and pastors whose music and preaching you trust. The more honest reading is that doubt is a season many believers pass through, not a verdict on whether the faith is true or whether you belong in it.
If You Are Not Sure God Is There, Why Keep Praying?
This part of his story sounds almost contradictory until you sit with it. During his hardest season, when he doubted whether God exists, the one constant that did not break was prayer.
— Da’ T.R.U.T.H.
He admits how strange that sounds: praying to a God you are not sure is there. The honest objection writes itself. Isn’t that just talking to no one? Da’ T.R.U.T.H.’s answer is that prayer in a season of doubt is not primarily a transaction; it is a posture of seeking. There were stretches when he could not bring himself to open his Bible and the words felt dead on the page, but he could still cry out. He leans on the promise that God “is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Hebrews 11:6), not of those who arrive already certain. The seeking itself, even from inside real uncertainty, is what the promise is attached to.
Did the Bible Just Copy Older Myths?
Of everything that shook him, this is the claim he names as hitting hardest. In a college Western Civilization class, he learned that flood stories predate Noah and that Eden-like garden stories predate Adam and Eve. The implication on offer was obvious: maybe the Bible did not reveal anything. Maybe it just borrowed.
It is a serious objection, not a straw man, and it deserves a real answer rather than a dismissal. Da’ T.R.U.T.H.’s way through it reframes the question entirely. These flood narratives and origin stories circulated by word of mouth for generations before anyone wrote down any version. Everyone in that ancient world grew up hearing some version of a flood, the same way most modern children grow up hearing some version of a creation story regardless of their family’s faith. Given that shared inheritance, the question that actually matters shifts.
“The question is really who wrote it accurately. Not who wrote it first.”
— Da’ T.R.U.T.H.
Being first proves nothing about being true. A culture could have an older flood story and still get the meaning of the flood wrong, just as a later account could preserve the real history more faithfully. Chronology is not the same test as accuracy, and conflating the two is the sleight of hand the objection depends on.
Doesn’t Everyone Have Their Own Truth?
Da’ T.R.U.T.H. takes direct aim at a phrase that sounds humble and gets repeated constantly: my truth, your truth, everybody’s truth is valid. He grants that it sounds generous. He does not think anyone can actually live by it.
“If it’s all a matter of interpretation, why not just light up on the plane?”
— Da’ T.R.U.T.H.
If meaning were just personal interpretation all the way down, the no-smoking sign would be nothing more than a suggestion, and yet every passenger treats it as a fixed rule they are expected to obey. He pushes the logic one step further, the way a good apologist tests a claim against itself. If there is no ultimate, shared meaning, then the statement “there is no ultimate meaning” is itself just someone’s personal truth, and no one else has any reason to accept it. The claim cannot survive being applied to itself.
Is the Church a Safe Place to Say Any of This Out Loud?
Da’ T.R.U.T.H. is not confident the answer is yes, and that troubles him more than the doubt itself.
“I don’t know if the church is a safe place for that conversation.”
— Da’ T.R.U.T.H.
He sees a pattern. Young people often leave not because their questions were unanswerable but because they were never given room to ask them inside the church at all. Then a professor who has spent years sharpening arguments against the faith meets them on day one of a college class, fully prepared, while the church sent them off with inspiration but no tools. His fix is not louder enthusiasm or a better hype moment on Sunday. It is honest space to wrestle and teaching that respects the mind, instead of a culture that quietly asks people to leave their brains at the sanctuary door.
That last point cuts both ways, and it is worth sitting with if you lead anyone: a small group, a classroom, your own household. A community that punishes questions does not produce people with no doubts. It produces people who hide the doubts they already have and go looking for somewhere else to bring them.
Is Doubt the Opposite of Faith, or Part of It?
It is worth pausing on a distinction that gets blurred constantly in church culture: the difference between doubt and unbelief. Unbelief is a settled decision not to trust God. Doubt is usually something else, an unresolved question sitting inside a faith that has not actually given up. Da’ T.R.U.T.H.’s own story makes the case better than any definition could. He doubted whether God exists, arguably the most serious form of doubt available to a believer, and he kept praying through it. That is not what unbelief looks like. Unbelief stops praying because it has already concluded there is no one on the other end.
Some will raise a theological objection here: doesn’t the Bible call for confidence, not uncertainty? It does call for trust, but trust and intellectual certainty about every detail are not the same demand. The father in Mark’s Gospel says both in the same breath:
“Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.” (Mark 9:24)
Jesus does not correct his grammar or his theology. He heals the man’s son. Scripture’s own examples suggest that doubt voiced honestly to God is not disqualifying. It can be the very thing that keeps someone praying instead of walking away.
What Changed Once He Actually Researched the Question?
One detail in Da’ T.R.U.T.H.’s account is worth slowing down on, because it cuts against a common assumption that research is the enemy of faith. The copycat-religion claim did not lose its power over him because he avoided it or buried it under more worship music. It lost its power because he looked into it. He learned how these ancient stories actually traveled, who told them and how long they circulated before being written down, and that changed the question he was asking. Faith that cannot survive being researched was never especially sturdy to begin with. Faith that survives the research, and sometimes grows sharper because of it, is the kind he is describing.
Quick Answers
Is it a sin to doubt? Da’ T.R.U.T.H. does not glorify doubt, but he treats it as a normal season many believers pass through. What matters is staying connected to God through it, especially in prayer.
What is the copycat-religion claim? It is the argument that Bible stories like Noah’s flood or Adam and Eve were simply borrowed from older myths that came first.
How does he answer it? He notes that these stories circulated orally for generations before being written down, so every culture had a version. The question is not who wrote it first, but who wrote it accurately.
Why does he reject the idea of “my truth”? Because no one can live as if all truth is personal. We rely on shared meaning every day, like the no-smoking sign on a plane. If words had no real meaning, the claim that truth is relative would mean nothing either.
How can the church help people who doubt? By making room for honest questions and feeding the mind, not just the emotions, especially with young people before they head off to college.
