Ask a friend whether God exists and you may get a shrug. Ask what they count on to explain the world, to give their life weight or to tell them what is true, and you will usually get an answer. The real conversation starts there. Vince Vitale argues that the main rival to Christian faith today is seldom formal atheism. It is a set of secular substitutes that took over God’s work without anyone announcing it: science as the explanation for everything, meaning as a pick from a crowded menu and a public rule against calling any answer right. You answer these substitutes by naming them, asking which question each one is trying to answer and testing honestly whether it can carry that weight. Then you invite the person to consider Jesus.
A committed atheist wants an argument, and that conversation has its place. The larger group Vitale has in mind does not think of itself as holding a worldview at all. Its beliefs feel like common sense. In that setting a Christian’s first job is to point out that a rival has already moved in.
What Replaced God, if Nobody Argued It Away?
Vitale gives a concrete picture. On a visit to university campuses in Chicago, he and his team set up a whiteboard outside an event with one question: what is the meaning of life? Across the top they listed options. Pass on your genes. Be successful. Make money. Sacrificially love others. Students were invited to come up and mark their answer.
The hesitation stayed with him more than any answer did. “My lasting image of that was of students confidently walking up to the board, grabbing the marker, looking at the options, and then really just standing there paralyzed,” Vitale says, adding that it sometimes went on for minutes. “And you could sort of see the confidence drain off their faces.”
Look at the list again. One option, sacrificially loving others, sits close to the center of Christian ethics. The students had a good answer in front of them. What they lacked was a way to choose and permission to say they had chosen. Vitale reads two pressures in that frozen moment. The first is volume. There are so many available ways of seeing the world that choosing among them becomes almost paralyzing. The second is social cost. To even suggest that one way of seeing the world might be right or better than others, he says, “is very often immediately branded as intolerant.”
Vitale places this inside a wider drift toward a secularized culture. He notes that The Economist had described a post-truth society and that the Oxford English Dictionary made post-truth its word of the year for 2016. Read beside the whiteboard, that label describes a habit more than a theory. Few students would defend the claim that nothing is true about the meaning of life. They simply act as though committing to one answer would be rude. The substitute for God here is a refusal to have a center, kept in place by a social rule.
Vitale is describing campus events he attended, and the precision is what makes the picture useful. He says the present age makes it very difficult “to take a respectful look at the options and make an informed decision about what you want at the center of your life.” His wording frames the decision as one about “what or who you are going to trust.” Everyone trusts something. The whiteboard made it visible.
Why Does Science Feel Like It Already Settled the Matter?
A second substitute presents itself as the opposite of belief: the sense that science has made God unnecessary. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, mentions a friend who is an OB-GYN, whose colleagues mock her faith and compare it to believing in unicorns. Ridicule like that rarely comes with an argument attached. It assumes the argument was won somewhere, by someone, long ago.
Vitale knows that assumption from the inside. Before he became a Christian, while studying philosophy in college, he picked up a bookstore book whose back cover promised a Christianity with everything miraculous explained away. “I can remember hoping it could be done,” he says. He was drawn to Jesus in the Gospels but did not think the miraculous could be taken seriously. Looking back, he says no one had ever given him good arguments for that view. Instead, “there was just this assumption in culture that somehow because science was explaining more and more things, science in some way had disproved God.”
The belief did not arrive as a conclusion. It arrived as atmosphere. Vitale’s verdict on it is blunt: “It’s an unfounded rumor.”
He answers with three observations from cosmology. First, scientists now hold that the universe had a beginning, which Vitale connects to the opening line of Scripture:
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).
Second, the universe is suited to life against odds he says scientists put so low that the number could not even be written out. Third, the universe is regular and patterned enough to study at all.
The force of the argument lies in its method more than its figures. For each fact, Vitale asks which kind of world you would expect to find it in. A universe that began needs a cause able to begin it. A life-friendly universe is startling on pure chance and unsurprising if a relational God meant to bring people into existence. An orderly universe is what you would expect from a Maker and has no particular reason to exist otherwise. The rumor assumes that every new scientific explanation shrinks the space left for God. Vitale turns that around. The practice of explaining anything depends on the world being orderly, so the success of science is itself something that needs accounting for. That is why he says, “Not only do I not think that science disproves God, but I actually think that only God proves science.”
It is also why he does not treat the question as a threat. “I don’t feel like when I speak on that topic, I’m on the back foot,” he says.
Is That an Overreach in the Other Direction?
A fair reader should push here. Cosmology does not hand anyone a finished proof of the Christian God. The odds Vitale mentions are his report of what scientists say, and arguments from a cosmic beginning and from fine-tuning are debated by serious people on every side. A skeptic can reasonably answer that a beginning leaves open what kind of cause is involved, or that we do not yet know enough to treat the odds as settled.
Vitale’s claim is narrower than a knockdown argument. He says belief in God gives a good explanation for each of these facts, and that without God it is not clear what the explanation is. That is a comparison of which account fits the evidence better, and it invites further argument. The cultural payoff comes before that argument is finished. Someone who believed science had disproved God discovers that this was never shown to them, and the conversation changes.
Vitale also adds a guardrail for Christians. Fields observes that people often treat scientific claims used against faith as settled fact when they may be hypotheses still being tested. Vitale goes further, asserting that “the vast majority of scientific theories that throughout history at one point were considered proven and considered the consensus, are now considered to be false.” His application is aimed at believers. Christians should not start rereading Scripture every time a newspaper announces a discovery. “So we need to ground ourselves in something which is much more stable than science, which is the word of God.”
This keeps his own argument honest. If revision is how science works, a Christian cannot rest the faith on the latest finding either, including findings that seem friendly. Vitale’s warning leaves well-supported results standing. What it denies is that anything revised century by century should sit at the center of a life.
How Do You Name a Substitute in an Ordinary Conversation?
Scripture shows this move in Athens. Luke records Paul telling the Athenians:
“For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you” (Acts 17:23).
The passage is narrative. It describes what Paul did rather than prescribing a script. What it describes is still instructive. Paul starts with what his listeners already reverence and names it before he speaks of the God they have not known.
Vitale’s version begins with a principle: “Criticism without alternative is empty.” People often want to tear down one way of seeing the world without putting anything in its place. Yet everyone, he argues, has to answer the same basic questions to live a coherent life: where we came from, what life is for, how we should therefore live and where we are headed. That gives a Christian an opening that does not feel like an ambush. Every substitute is an answer to at least one of those questions. Ask which one, and ask what it does with the others.
The whiteboard’s own options show how this works. Being successful and making money are among the most common working answers people actually live by, and they have the appeal of being measurable. They tell you what to do with your days. They say nothing about where you came from or where you are headed, and they leave the question of how to live hanging on whatever happens to pay. A friend who lives for success can be asked, without accusation, what that answer says about the end of a life, and whether it holds once the success arrives or fails to.
The same test applies elsewhere. If a friend says science will eventually explain everything, ask whether science can tell them what their life is for or how to treat the people around them. If a friend refuses to call any answer right, ask whether they actually live that way, or whether they hold some things, like how people ought to be treated, as plainly true. Vitale’s claim is that Christianity answers these questions more coherently, and more in keeping with how people actually experience life, than the alternatives. That is a claim you test together with someone.
What Keeps the Conversation From Turning Into a Hobby?
Fields names the risk on the Christian side. A love of apologetics, she says, can become “something that’s just an obsession, and you just talk about theories and questions and never get people to the gospel.” A believer can get very good at naming substitutes and never offer anything in their place, which is its own form of criticism without alternative.
Vitale’s answer is that both halves are needed. You take people’s questions seriously and start where they are, and you also invite them. His image is simple: “If I’m throwing a great party, but I never send you an invitation, for most people, it’s unlikely that you’re just gonna show up.”
His own story shows why the manner matters as much as the arguments. As a student, he says, “I didn’t feel I could just park my brain at the door if this was a blind leap of faith.” What changed things was a community that took his questions seriously and pointed him to good resources. As the intellectual objections cleared, he could be more honest about what was in his heart. Months later, alone in his dorm room, the reality of what Jesus had done struck him, and he said out loud, “Oh man, this really happened.”
Vitale says people who hear his team speak often write in about the same thing. The answers mattered, but the treatment mattered more. “You took my questions seriously. You took me seriously. You engaged with gentleness and respect,” he says, repeating what they tell him, “and that is part of the content of our message.” The phrase echoes Peter:
“Be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).
Many modern translations render “meekness and fear” as gentleness and respect. Fields puts the same point in her own words: “Contending without being contentious is important.”
Most of these substitutes were never argued into anyone. They were absorbed from classrooms, from friends, from the general mood of what sensible people assume. A believer who listens closely enough to name the actual substitute, and treats the person holding it with respect, is already showing something the substitute cannot offer: a God who takes people seriously, questions included.
