Losing trust in your church over race can feel like losing God, because for many believers the two arrived together. Lecrae’s story suggests they can come apart. His faith cracked when Christian leaders he respected withheld their support after he spoke about race, and it came back when he stopped asking those leaders to tell him who he was. Keeping his faith did not require calling the hurt small. It required finding a God who stayed when the room went cold.
This is not a formula, and nothing below promises a short road. It is an honest account from someone who went all the way down, and it shows wounded believers where the damage actually happened and where the ground held.
Why Does This Hurt Reach All the Way Down to Faith?
Some disappointments stay on the surface. After a weak sermon or a bad ministry decision, you are frustrated, and you move on. Racial silence from people you trusted works differently.
Before he came to faith, Lecrae says, his identity was predicated on being validated and affirmed. When he became a Christian, he believed he no longer needed that, because Jesus had done what needed doing. But, as he puts it, “old habits die hard.” Wounds from his upbringing had gone untreated, and without quite realizing it, “I was beginning to use the validation of Christians and leaders as a sense of identity.”
Then came the deaths of Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice, Philando Castile and Eric Garner. Lecrae spoke out with little sense of how much political weight those subjects carried in many churches, because “I wasn’t raised in the church.” Many Christians, especially white brothers and sisters, did not understand or appreciate what he said. The criticism stung. What he names most precisely is quieter: “not just the backlash, but also the lack of support that I received from a lot of Christian leaders that I respected.”
The loud critics hurt him. The silent mentors reached his foundation. When the people who represent God to you are also the ones who tell you that you matter, their withdrawal lands as a theological verdict. His own question shows how fast the slide happens: “if these are your people, God, I don’t know where else to look.”
Scripture knows this particular wound. In Psalm 55:12–14, David says he could have borne an enemy’s insults. What undid him was a companion, his own familiar friend, someone he had walked with to the house of God. The Bible treats betrayal from inside the circle of worship as its own kind of grief. Feeling it that way is not oversensitivity.
What Should Nobody Say to You Right Now?
The familiar responses tend to fail here, and it helps to know why.
One is simple repetition: God loves you, God loves you. Lecrae does not dispute the sentence. He disputes the idea that saying it settles anything. “You can’t convince a person that God loves them,” he says. “They have to experience it.” A hurting person who hears the right words from the same community that hurt them is being asked to accept a claim that community has just contradicted.
Another is the assumption that real faith does not fall apart. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, argues that “there’s a large group of skeptics that sit in the pews,” people who arrived at doubt through their experiences with other people in those same pews. If that describes you, you are not an outsider to the faith. You are one of the people the church most needs to take seriously. Fields knows the territory herself. She describes being “like a seminary student in ministry, like not knowing if God is real,” and recalls a professor who told her, “God is not scared of your questions. He welcomes them.”
A third is hurrying you toward the happy ending. Lecrae’s story does contain restoration. It also contains severe depression, severe anxiety, a stretch when he believed there was no God, and a long road in between. Skipping to the end of someone else’s story is a way of refusing to sit with yours.
Is It Faithless to Doubt This Hard?
Lecrae did not ease into doubt. Despair led to severe depression and severe anxiety. He came to believe there was no God, and he turned to the science of mental health to understand what was happening in his mind.
What happened there is the most interesting turn in his story. He kept meeting principles he recognized, ideas that sounded like biblical concepts in different language. That did not hand him his faith back, but it raised a question he could not put down. Without God and without purpose, he reasoned, “everything is just chaos, and then I’m just a bunch of atoms and cells.” In that case, “then what’s the point of me trying to find hope and healing?”
Yet he could not stop wanting to heal. “And I was in a place where I did feel like I mattered. I did feel like I wanted health and wholeness.” He concluded that this longing pointed to someone who had designed him with a standard of wholeness, and he began, he says, with something like deism: a God exists, but who is he?
A skeptic can fairly answer that wanting meaning does not prove anyone put it there. Longings can be mistaken. Lecrae’s reasoning works as a pointer, not a proof. Still, the pointer matters. He did not argue himself out of pain. He paid attention to what the pain assumed, and he found that his desire to be made whole fit a designed world better than a meaningless one. For someone in the dark, that is a place to start looking.
The Bible gives this kind of honesty a form. Psalm 13 opens:
“How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?” (Psalm 13:1)
That is a prayer, used in Israel’s worship, by someone who feels abandoned. Lament is faith that refuses to lie to God about how things look.
Can I Leave the Version of Christianity That Hurt Me Without Leaving Christ?
Once Lecrae believed God existed again, he faced the next question: which God? On one point he was firm. “I refuse to go back into the portal of westernized Christianity that I had come from.”
Instead he went further back, into what he calls the ancient Hebraic roots of who God was, and he marks a boundary carefully: “And I’m not talking about like a Hebrew Israelite, but like authentic Jewish culture.” He found a weight of evidence there that he describes as undeniable, and it led somewhere specific. God opened his eyes to see “that he was walking with me the whole time,” and to see Jesus as the Messiah he could rely on.
The strongest objection deserves a hearing. Isn’t this just picking a Christianity that suits you once the old one stopped feeling good? For some people it could be. But look at where Lecrae’s search ended: at Jesus as Messiah, the center of historic Christian confession. What he set aside was a cultural package, not the faith. The test of whether a search like this is honest is where it lands.
He also argues that the faith he returned to was never the property of the people who hurt him. Christianity, in his words, is “very much eastern and it has African roots” that predate slavery. A Black believer wounded in a white-majority church is therefore under no obligation to stay loyal to that church’s culture in order to stay loyal to Christ.
His story does not settle every practical question about your own congregation. It concerns which version of the faith he rebuilt on. Whether to stay in or leave a particular church depends on things only you, and people who know you well, can weigh. What his story shows is that the room and the Lord are different, and confidence in one can break while trust in the other survives.
What Changes When Your Identity Rests on God Instead of Approval?
Lecrae sees this as the question underneath much of the pain. The generation before him, he suggests, asked about freedom. Younger believers are “strongly looking for identity, strongly looking for their place and their purpose and their worth and their value,” in a culture that measures worth by attention.
His collapse is the case study. While his worth ran through the affirmation of Christian leaders, their silence could take it away. Once it ran through God, nobody in the room could revoke it. His song “Set Me Free” grew out of that discovery: he had to believe “I was not a slave to societal standards,” nor to the spiritual strongholds pulling him down.
A fair worry follows. Telling a hurt person to find their identity in God can sound like a gentler way of saying “get over it.” It would be, if it were used to excuse the people who stayed silent. Lecrae never calls the backlash acceptable or the leaders right. Relocating your identity passes no judgment in their favor. It simply removes their power to have the final word on who you are.
He also describes the God he found. “I was experiencing that God was not transactional, that I couldn’t turn him on and say, Hey, fix this right now. But he was relational. He was willing to walk with me through the dark parts of my life.” Approval is earned and can be withdrawn. The presence Lecrae describes held even when he had turned his back and gone another direction: “He’s still consistent. He’s still faithful.”
What Does Jeremiah 29 Promise, and What Doesn’t It?
Lecrae points to Jeremiah 29:11 to describe God’s character as a restorer. In the King James Version it reads:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” (Jeremiah 29:11)
The older word thoughts carries the sense of plans or intentions, which is how many modern translations render it.
Lecrae makes the key observation himself: the promise went to people already in captivity. It came because of a problem. The surrounding chapter confirms this. In Jeremiah 29:5–7, the exiles are told to build houses, plant gardens, raise families and seek the peace of the city where they had been carried away. In Jeremiah 29:10, the return is placed after seventy years in Babylon. Many who first heard the letter would not live to see it.
That reading guards against two errors. It rules out the idea that God’s good intentions mean your pain will end soon or on your terms. It also rules out the idea that pain means God has stopped intending good. Lecrae describes God as “always working behind the scenes through our calamities, through our pain, through the turmoil that happens for something greater,” and insists “he’s not asleep at the wheel.”
His own life did turn. “My family was in disarray. My marriage was in disarray, my faith was in disarray. And I just felt there’s no way God could restore all this.” He now says God restored it and made it better than before. That is his testimony, and it is worth hearing. It is not a guarantee about your timeline. Jeremiah offers a God whose intentions toward his people are good. It does not offer a date.
What Does Faithfulness Look Like in the Meantime?
If you are carrying depression or anxiety, as Lecrae was, care for your mind as seriously as your soul. Trained counselors and clinicians are one of the ways God helps people, and seeking them is not a failure of faith. If despair ever turns toward thoughts of ending your life, reach out right away.

Beyond that, the exiles in Jeremiah give a pattern. They were not told to pretend Babylon was home or to wait idly for rescue. They were told to keep living, keep planting and keep praying, under a promise they could not yet see fulfilled. Telling God the truth, in words as raw as Psalm 13, belongs to that kind of waiting. So does finding even one person who can hear the whole story without defending anyone.
Lecrae’s last word on the subject is about rest. After years of straining to be accepted, he came to believe that God asks for trust more than effort: “He wants us to rest so he can do the restoration.” For a believer exhausted by the church’s silence, that is the same invitation Jeremiah’s exiles received. Settle into the place you actually are, and let God be the one who keeps the promise.
