When the church fails you on race, Scripture does not mainly hand you an explanation. It hands you a way to pray. The Bible holds several laments written by people betrayed by their own companions in worship. Psalm 55 is the clearest. These prayers let you name the friend who failed you, say the whole thing to God, and keep talking to him without pretending the wound is small. This guide works through three such texts slowly. You can use it alone over a week or with a group over one or two sessions. Read each passage before reading the comments on it.
Begin with three verses, read twice
Open to Psalm 55:12-14 and read it aloud. In the King James Version it says: “For it was not an enemy that reproached me; then I could have borne it: neither was it he that hated me that did magnify himself against me; then I would have hid myself from him: But it was thou, a man mine equal, my guide, and mine acquaintance. We took sweet counsel together, and walked unto the house of God in company.”
Before going further, write down what you see. Some prompts for observation:
- Which two kinds of attack does David say he could have survived, and what would he have done about each?
- Find the place where the psalm stops talking about the betrayer and starts talking to him.
- What did the two men share before anything went wrong?
A few things stand out. David says he could have borne an enemy’s insult, and he could have hidden from someone who hated him. Those dangers have known defenses. This one did not, because it came from the person he would normally have run to. The word “guide” may sound odd here. Many modern translations render it as companion or close friend, which fits the line’s sense of equality and closeness.
Then notice the shift in verse 13. The psalm has been addressing God, and suddenly it says “thou.” For one sentence David turns and faces the friend. Grief does that. It does not stay politely in the third person.
Last, look at where the friendship happened. They “walked unto the house of God in company” (Psalm 55:14). The betrayal is not only personal. It comes from inside shared worship. That is why this psalm fits church hurt so closely. The person who failed you may have been the person who sat beside you in the service, mentored you, or vouched for you.
Read the whole psalm, not just the famous part
Now read all twenty-three verses of Psalm 55 at once. The heading calls it a Psalm of David. Some interpreters connect it to the rebellion of Absalom and the defection of David’s counselor Ahithophel in 2 Samuel 15-17. The heading does not say so, and it is best held as a possible setting, not a certainty. What the psalm itself tells us is enough.
Trace how it moves. It does not climb neatly from pain to peace. It circles.
- Verses 1-8: a plea to be heard, terror, and the wish to escape: “Oh that I had wings like a dove! for then would I fly away, and be at rest” (Psalm 55:6).
- Verses 9-11: violence and deceit filling the city.
- Verses 12-14: the friend.
- Verses 15-19: a request for judgment on the wicked, then a vow to keep praying “evening, and morning, and at noon” (Psalm 55:17).
- Verses 20-21: the friend again, whose “words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart” (Psalm 55:21).
- Verses 22-23: “Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee” (Psalm 55:22), and finally, “but I will trust in thee” (Psalm 55:23).
Two features of this shape matter for anyone using the psalm today. First, the betrayal comes back. David turns to prayer in verse 16 and the friend is back in his mind by verse 20. Returning to the hurt after you thought you had moved past it is not a failure of faith. It is the pattern of the prayer itself.
Second, the psalm ends with a decision, not a resolution. Nothing in the text says the friend repented or the situation was repaired. The last line is a statement of where David will put his weight. Read it as a lament, the genre it is, and not as a promise that the people who hurt you will come around.
There is also a hard verse here. Psalm 55:15 asks for death to seize the wicked. Do not skip it, and do not turn it into a license. The psalm describes what an anguished man said to God. It hands judgment to God instead of taking it into his own hands. It does not command you to wish death on anyone. It does show that anger can be spoken in prayer, where God can deal with it, rather than buried until it poisons you.
A second companion: Psalm 41 and the upper room
Read Psalm 41. The speaker is sick, and people visit him only to gather gossip (verses 5-8). Then comes Psalm 41:9: “Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”
Look also at Psalm 41:4: “I said, LORD, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.” This man does not claim to be perfect. He can admit his own sin and still name the friend’s betrayal as betrayal. You do not have to prove your own innocence in every respect before you are allowed to grieve what was done to you.
In John 13:18, Jesus applies Psalm 41:9 to Judas at the last supper. Read that verse and compare it with the psalm. Jesus cites the line about eating bread and lifting the heel. The words “in whom I trusted” do not appear in his citation. Some readers take that as a quiet sign that Jesus was never deceived about Judas. Whatever you make of that detail, the main point is plain in the text: Jesus himself was betrayed by someone who ate at his table. The Lord you pray to in your hurt is not a stranger to this kind of wound.
A third: the trial where no one stood
Not every church wound is an active attack. Sometimes the injury is silence. Read 2 Timothy 4:9-18. Paul, near the end of his life, lists people who left. Then he writes: “At my first answer no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge” (2 Timothy 4:16).
Compare that with Lecrae’s account on the Jude 3 Project podcast. After he spoke publicly about the killings of Trayvon, Tamir, Philando and Eric Garner, he faced criticism. But he names a second injury alongside it: “not just the backlash, but also the lack of support that I received from a lot of Christian leaders that I respected.” Paul’s verse and Lecrae’s sentence describe the same shape of hurt. Nobody had to strike you. They only had to stay seated.
Lecrae explains why that silence went so deep. He says that before faith his identity rested on being validated and affirmed, and that the old pattern followed him into the church: “I was beginning to use the validation of Christians and leaders as a sense of identity.” When those leaders withdrew, his question went straight to God: “if these are your people, God, I don’t know where else to look.”
Paul’s next sentence answers a version of that question: “Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me” (2 Timothy 4:17). Read verses 16 and 17 together. Paul does not deny that the people failed him. He also does not let their absence define the Lord’s presence. Lecrae describes reaching a similar discovery after a long season of doubt, depression and anxiety. He says God opened his eyes to see “he was walking with me the whole time.” Lecrae is not commenting on 2 Timothy. But his story and Paul’s letter both separate the people who left from the God who did not.
What these texts do not say
Reading carefully also means noticing limits. These passages were not written about race, and they do not tell you whether to stay in or leave a particular congregation. Applying them to racial betrayal in the church today is application, built on what the texts plainly mean: betrayal by a worship companion is real, can be named before God, and does not cancel God’s faithfulness.
A fair objection deserves an answer here. Doesn’t praying Psalm 55 risk casting fellow Christians as enemies and settling into bitterness? It could, if you read it carelessly. Look closely at what the friend in Psalm 55 did. He “hath broken his covenant” (Psalm 55:20) and spoke smoothly while planning harm. Silent mentors, distracted friends and openly hostile critics are not all the same, and the text can help you tell them apart honestly instead of lumping everyone together. Also notice that the same Bible that gives you Psalm 55 gives you Paul praying that his deserters not be held accountable. Both prayers are in Scripture. You may need the first before you can honestly pray the second, and neither can be forced.
Lisa Fields, the founder and president of Jude 3 Project, points out that doubt like this is common among believers: “there’s a large group of skeptics that sit in the pews.” She recalls a seminary professor telling her, “God is not scared of your questions. He welcomes them.” The laments bear that out. They are full of questions, and they were sung in Israel’s worship.
The practice: write a companion lament
This week, write your own prayer using the movements of Psalm 55. Do it privately. No one needs to read it. Take one movement a day if that helps.
- Ask to be heard. Like verses 1-2, begin by asking God to listen. Say plainly if you are not sure he will.
- Admit the wish to escape. Like verse 6, write where you would fly if you could.
- Name what actually happened. Like verses 12-14, be specific. Who was it? What did you share with them? Was it an attack, or a silence? Keep the distinction honest.
- Say the angry part to God. Like verse 15, put your anger in the prayer rather than in a group chat. You are handing it over, not acting on it.
- Return when it returns. If the hurt comes back on day four after you thought you were done with it, write it again, as verses 20-21 do.
- End with where you will put your weight. Psalm 55:23 ends “but I will trust in thee.” If you cannot write that honestly yet, write what you can, even if it is only that you are still talking to him.
Lecrae describes the God he came to know this way: “God was not transactional, that I couldn’t turn him on and say, Hey, fix this right now. But he was relational. He was willing to walk with me through the dark parts of my life.” The practice above is not a technique to make the pain stop. It is a way of staying in that relationship while the pain is still there.
If you are leading a group, do not ask anyone to read their lament aloud. Invite people to share only what they noticed about the psalm’s structure, or one movement they found hard to write. Some members may be carrying something heavier than church hurt. Lecrae’s own season included severe depression and anxiety. If someone describes that, encourage them toward a counselor as well as a pastor, and if anyone mentions thoughts of ending their life, make sure they know they can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
Questions for talking it through
- Psalm 55 says an enemy’s insult could have been endured but a companion’s could not. Why does closeness change the kind of damage a betrayal does?
- The psalm returns to the friend after it has already turned to prayer. Does that pattern match or challenge what you expected healing to look like?
- Psalm 41:4 has the speaker confess his own sin in the same prayer where he names a friend’s betrayal. What is gained by holding both?
- Read 2 Timothy 4:16 and 4:17 side by side. What does Paul refuse to deny, and what does he refuse to conclude from it?
- Lecrae says his identity had come to rest on the validation of Christians and leaders. How might reading these laments change where a person looks for that validation, without excusing those who withheld it?
- The texts distinguish active betrayal from abandonment. When you think about your own experience, which description fits better, and does the difference change what you are asking God for?
Psalm 55 does not close with the friend restored or the injury explained. It closes with a man who has said everything, more than once, and decides where his trust will rest. Notice how short that final line is, and how much of the psalm it took to reach it.
