Read side by side, the two verses look like a collision. Romans 3:28 says:
“Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law” (Romans 3:28).
James 2:24 says:
“Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only” (James 2:24).
The same verb and the same subject, with what sounds like the opposite verdict.
They do not contradict each other. Paul and James use the same words to answer different questions for different audiences. Paul is asking on what terms Gentiles belong to God’s people, and his answer is faith, not becoming Jewish. James is asking whether a faith that never acts is faith at all, and his answer is no. Hakeem Bradley, a Bible scholar whose PhD work focuses on the letter of James, locates the trouble in the reader rather than the text: “It’s a misunderstanding of how they’re using those similar words or exact same words in different contexts.”
That claim only holds if the surrounding passages support it. So the work here is to step into each room, one at a time, and see what question is actually on the table.
Why Do the Two Verses Sound Like They Disagree?
Part of the clash comes from a slogan. Many Protestant Christians learned to summarize the gospel as justification by faith alone. Bradley points out an irony in that: “The only time you see the phrase faith alone in the Scriptures is actually when James is saying it.” The KJV renders it “faith only,” and James uses it to deny something.
A reader who brings the slogan to James 2 will hear James attacking the gospel. But a slogan is a summary, and every summary is shaped by the question it was built to answer. Before deciding that James and Paul disagree, we need to know whether they were asked the same question.
What Question Is Paul Answering in Romans 3?
Romans 3:28 does not stand alone. In the very next verse, Romans 3:29, Paul asks whether God is the God of the Jews only, and answers that he is the God of the Gentiles as well. Then Romans 3:30 explains why: God “shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.” Circumcised and uncircumcised, Jew and Gentile, come in the same way.
That is the room Paul is standing in. His concern in this stretch of Romans is who counts as part of God’s people and on what terms. Bradley reads Paul as showing Gentiles how they have been joined to Israel as one new people, and his summary of Paul’s message is direct: “You don’t have to become Jewish in order to be ingrained in by the Messiah.”
Romans 4 confirms the setting. Paul turns to Abraham and asks when his righteousness was counted to him: “How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision” (Romans 4:10). Abraham believed God in Genesis 15, and circumcision does not arrive until Genesis 17. Paul’s point is chronological. The father of Israel was counted righteous before he carried the mark that set Israel apart, so Gentiles who believe can stand where he stood.
Interpreters do differ on how far to press this. Some Christian readers, Bradley among them, understand Paul’s “deeds of the law” mainly as the practices that marked Jews off from Gentiles, such as circumcision. Others, following the Reformation tradition, read the phrase more broadly as any human obedience offered to earn standing before God. Faithful Christians hold both readings, and both take Romans 3 seriously. On either one, Paul’s subject is what makes a person right with God and a member of his people. Whether real faith goes on to change a life is a question he handles elsewhere, and his answer to it is never in doubt.
What Question Is James Answering in James 2?
James opens his letter “to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad” (James 1:1). Bradley takes that address at face value: “James is talking to Jews, like, there’s no reference point to Gentiles.” The letter assumes its readers already belong to God’s covenant people. It speaks of “the royal law” (James 2:8) and “the law of liberty” (James 2:12) as shared ground.
So the question of Romans 3 never comes up. Nobody in James’s room is asking whether Gentiles must be circumcised. His question is stated plainly:
“What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him?” (James 2:14).
The man in that verse claims to have faith. James is testing the claim, and the works he asks about are the evidence that would make it believable.
Then comes his sharpest line: “Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble” (James 2:19). The belief in view is agreement with Israel’s core confession that God is one. James grants that the confession is true, then observes that demons hold it too. Agreement is where covenant life starts, and in Bradley’s words, “It needs to turn into actual action.”
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, heard in this the voice of the Hebrew prophets, who warned Israel that covenant membership did not excuse them from obedience. Her paraphrase of their message: “Your actions matter, even though you’re my covenant people.” That comparison places James well. He stands in a long biblical line of warning insiders, far from any debate about letting outsiders in. He makes the point with an image of a corpse:
“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also” (James 2:26).
Why Do Both Writers Point to Abraham?
This is where the two rooms become easiest to see, because Paul and James use the same man and even the same verse. James quotes Genesis 15:6 directly: “Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness” (James 2:23). He does not deny it. He says, in that same verse, that “the scripture was fulfilled” by what Abraham did later.
The later moment is Genesis 22: “Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?” (James 2:21). Bradley traces the long road between the two chapters. Abraham, he says, “had to go through a whole life cycle of trusting God,” a road that included the mistreatment of Hagar and Sarah’s laughter at the promise of a son in Genesis 18. Moriah was the final test of whether Abraham trusted the God who had called him, and in Bradley’s reading, there “the justification of Genesis 15 is actually brought to his fullness in this moment.”
Paul looks at Abraham in Genesis 15, before circumcision, to show that God counts the uncircumcised righteous through faith. James looks at Abraham in Genesis 22, decades into a life of faith, to show that the trust of Genesis 15 was real because it held under testing. Both affirm Genesis 15:6. They draw from different chapters because they are answering different questions.
James then adds a surprise: “Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?” (James 2:25). Bradley sees Abraham and Rahab as two ends of a spectrum. Where Abraham is the patriarch, Rahab is his opposite: “She’s a woman, she’s a Canaanite, and she has an occupation that some would really not look upon as favorable.” She hid the spies sent by a God she had only heard about. James is not using her to argue for Gentile inclusion, which would put him in Paul’s room. She shows that the pattern holds at every level. From the father of Israel to a Canaanite outsider, real trust moves.
Does “Justified” Mean the Same Thing in Both Verses?
Both writers use the same Greek verb, which is part of why the verses seem to clash. A word takes its sense from the passage around it, so the place to look is the verse just before James 2:24.
“Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?” (James 2:22).
The grammar keeps faith as the subject that works alongside the deeds. Works do not replace faith or compete with it. They bring it to completion. Verse 23 then says the scripture about Abraham’s believing was “fulfilled,” the language of a promise reaching its intended end. Only after these two verses does James draw his conclusion in verse 24.
That sequence supports the most common Protestant reading. In Romans, justified names God declaring a person righteous. In James, it names that righteousness being shown and confirmed in a life. Abraham was declared righteous in Genesis 15 and shown to be righteous in Genesis 22. Bradley’s language of Genesis 15 coming to its fullness at Moriah fits this reading closely.
The reading has a limit, and it should be stated. James 2:24 says plainly that a man is justified by works, and the verse does not add the word shown. Some interpreters therefore hear in James a reference to God’s final verdict on a life, a vindication that includes the deeds faith produced. That alternative still keeps faith at the center, because in verse 22 the works are faith’s own works. Neither reading has James describing a second road to God’s favor that bypasses trust.
Isn’t James Still Saying Works Earn Salvation?
This is the strongest objection, and it has a famous champion. Martin Luther dismissed James as “an epistle of straw” because, in Bradley’s account, Luther did not find the gospel in it as he understood the gospel. Luther was fighting a real error: the idea that people can earn God’s acceptance. If James taught that, Luther’s worry would be justified.
James 2:14, though, asks whether a certain kind of faith can save, the kind that only talks. That is a question about what genuine faith is. Paul, for his part, insists on good works as firmly as James does. He writes that what matters is “faith which worketh by love” (Galatians 5:6). Ephesians 2:8–10 says we are saved by grace through faith, “not of works,” and then in the next breath that we are “created in Christ Jesus unto good works.” The order in that passage is the whole resolution. Works are excluded as the ground of salvation and expected as its result. Bradley’s verdict on the common caricature of Paul is short: “He’s not anti good works. That is a misnomer.”
Bradley’s response to Luther also rests on who James was. He argues that the teaching of Jesus runs all through the letter, and that James held a leading role in the earliest church, including at the Jerusalem council in Acts 15. On dating, Bradley lays out a spread of scholarly views and then offers his own tentative guess that the letter may come from the mid-forties, partly because it says nothing about Gentile inclusion. He is open that this is his personal view and that he might change his mind. If he is right, James was not writing a rebuttal to Paul at all. Even if the letter is later, its own words never engage Paul’s question.
What Changes When You Read Each in Its Own Room?
Bradley’s advice is to stop forcing the meeting: “Do not read James through the lens of Paul, read James through the lens of James.” Let James speak first, and bring Paul in afterward only if he is needed. Bradley suggests reading James straight through alongside the Sermon on the Mount, to hear how closely the letter echoes the teaching of Jesus.
The practical stakes sit in the question a reader brings. Someone who wonders whether they can belong to God without first earning a place will find Romans 3 speaking directly to them, and the answer is faith. Someone whose belief has settled into agreement that changes nothing about how they treat the poor, guard their tongue or trust God under pressure will find James 2 speaking to them instead. The real misuse of these texts is answering James’s question with Paul’s verse, quoting Romans 3:28 to quiet a conscience that James 2 is meant to wake.
