James never tells his readers to confess to one another so that God will forgive them. He tells them to confess so that they may be healed. That purpose clause answers the question. Confession to God deals with guilt, and God’s forgiveness does not wait on anyone else’s hearing. James 5 adds something forgiveness alone does not supply. When a hidden thing is spoken to trustworthy people who then pray, it loses its hold, and that is where healing tends to happen.
What Does James 5:16 Actually Say?
The verse reads:
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).
The KJV word faults can sound milder than James means. Many other translations render it as “sins,” and the surrounding verses support that weight. In the archaic wording, “effectual fervent” describes prayer that is earnest and actually at work, and “availeth much” means it accomplishes a great deal.
The confession travels “one to another,” and the prayer travels “one for another.” Every verb in the first half of the verse runs between believers. Confession comes first, then prayer. And the sentence ends with “that ye may be healed.” James could have written that ye may be forgiven. He did not.
Where Does the Verse Sit in James’s Letter?
Verse 16 closes a short unit that begins at verse 13. James runs through the situations of community life:
“Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (James 5:13–14).
Then comes the promise: “And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him” (James 5:15).
In the immediate context, the sickness is bodily. A person is ill enough to call for the elders. So when verse 16 promises healing, the most natural first reading includes physical recovery. Many interpreters stop there. Others read verse 16 as widening the scene. The elders were called to one sick person in verse 14, but verse 16 turns to the whole church and makes confession and prayer the ordinary habit of every member. On that reading, healing in verse 16 covers the restoration of whole people, body included, without being limited to the body. The text supports both observations. It is clearly about sickness, and it clearly moves from a crisis visit to a standing practice among everyone.
Some traditions read these verses as grounds for sacramental confession and anointing by ordained clergy. Many Protestant readers point to the mutual wording and see confession among ordinary believers. James’s next sentence leans toward the second emphasis. His example of powerful prayer is Elijah, and he describes him this way: “Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are” (James 5:17). The righteous person whose prayer avails much is an ordinary person who prayed.
The letter closes with believers turning one another back:
“Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins” (James 5:19–20).
Confession in verse 16 belongs to that same picture. Members of the community take responsibility for one another’s restoration.
Is Forgiveness From God Different From Healing?
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, put the distinction in a sentence she credits to her father: confessing to God brings forgiveness of sin, and confessing to people brings healing. Hakeem Bradley, a Bible scholar whose doctoral work focuses on James, received it with open agreement. Fields then spelled out what it means in practice: “I could be forgiven of something but not healed.” Her concern is the person who has confessed to God and believes God, yet still lives as though the thing has power. Such people, she said, “live in a constant state of shame, constant state of guilt.” Because they will not talk to anyone, she argues, they stay in a cycle and drift back to the same thing.
Scripture does treat confession to God as sufficient for forgiveness. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). No human listener is required for that promise to hold. So the reader’s instinct is right as far as it goes. If God has forgiven you, you are forgiven.
The text also requires honesty about where the line falls. James 5:15 mentions forgiveness inside the community scene, attached to the prayer of faith offered by the elders. James does not sort forgiveness into one room and healing into another as tidily as a slogan might. What the slogan captures accurately is the purpose clause of verse 16. The stated reason for confessing to one another is healing. Forgiveness answers the question of guilt before God. Healing answers a different question: what the sin, or the wound, is still doing to you. James treats mutual confession as one of the ordinary means God uses to address that second question.
Why Does It Have to Involve Other People?
Bradley’s answer begins with the letter’s grammar of community. James writes “to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad” (James 1:1), meaning communities, not isolated readers. Bradley observes how much of the letter addresses a plural audience and draws a strong conclusion from it: “I honestly think it’s impossible to read his letter and come away with, okay, now I’m going to individually try to live this out.” Of the private, self-managed spiritual life many modern readers assume, he says: “Trying to live in isolation isn’t even fathomable to his mindset.”
That matters for interpreting verse 16. A modern reader can treat mutual confession as an optional extra for unusually open people. James’s audience would have heard it as a description of how a faithful community functions.
Bradley also connects chapter 5 to an earlier section of the letter. James 3 is James’s sustained warning about speech: “But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (James 3:8). Bradley takes that warning seriously. He says “the tongue truly can become a weapon,” whether in public, online or face to face. James 4 continues the theme of conflict: “From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?” (James 4:1). By the time the reader reaches chapter 5, the letter has shown how badly members of a community can harm one another with words.
That is why Bradley’s description of confession is so pointed. He speaks of “confessing to one another where our downfalls are so that somebody can use their tongue to uplift you and build you up.” The same organ James called full of deadly poison becomes the means of repair. In chapter 3 the tongue tears down. In chapter 5 it confesses, prays and speaks truth over another person. Having diagnosed the harm speech does, James ends by giving speech a healing task.
Bradley adds a reason that is less about James’s grammar and more about human limits: “We all got them blind spots.” He continues: “But other people can cover our peripherals, what we can’t see.” A person can confess to God everything he knows about himself. Some of what holds him has not yet been named, because he cannot see it. Other people sometimes can.
Does Confessing to People Replace Prayer to God?
No. The order in verse 16 settles it. Fields drew attention to that order: “I love the step. He’s like, confess it and then pray about it. So it ultimately makes him the healer.” Confession brings the hidden thing into the open, prayer carries it to God, and the healing is his. Fields described the community’s role precisely: “The community helps you get to the exposure to even take it to God for the healing.”
The same logic makes room for counseling. Seeking a therapist is no failure of faith, because God works through trained counselors as well as through friends who pray. Fields said of her own therapy and community that “it’s the tethering of those together that brings the freedom.” Bradley, who described close to five years of therapy alongside a small group of men gathered for confession and prayer, put it this way: “I am totally for therapy and I am totally for having a safe community in which you truly can experience further healing.”
Much of what Bradley brought into the light was harm done to him as a child. He said “many of those experiences as a kid wasn’t due to my own sin.” James 5:16 speaks of faults and sins, yet the healing it describes reaches people carrying wounds others caused. For them, confession means naming a hidden thing, with no guilt to admit that belongs to someone else.
What if Confessing to People Is Not Safe?
This is the strongest objection, and it deserves a direct answer. Many people have told something to a small group or a leader and then found it spread or used against them. For them, keeping a matter between themselves and God feels like wisdom, and they have reasons for it.
Bradley treats the objection seriously. When he imagines James lived out today, he includes a condition: “We are in safe spaces with one another, truly trying to live out the way of Jesus.” His own group was chosen for that purpose, and he was frank that they were people who could have gone out and gossiped. James 3 explains why safety cannot be assumed. Any tongue can poison. The command to confess presumes a community that has learned to use speech the way chapter 5 describes. Building that trust, or finding one or two people who have earned it, belongs to obeying the verse. James describes confession among people committed to one another’s restoration, with no instruction to tell everything to whoever happens to be nearby.
When that safety exists, Bradley names what follows: “When things are exposed and when the truth is brought out, what does that lead to? It leads to freedom.” That is the payoff verse 16 promises, and it depends on the condition he attached to it.
Some boundaries follow from the text and from basic care. James 5 does not require anyone to confess to the person who harmed them, to a leader who demands disclosures as a test of loyalty, or to a group that has proven untrustworthy. A church that turns confession into control has abandoned the practice James describes. If what you carry is abuse someone did to you, a trained counselor may need to be the first safe person, and that is wisdom.

What This Passage Does and Does Not Promise
James attaches healing to confession and prayer as their purpose. He does not give a timeline or guarantee a particular outcome, and an honest reading should not invent one. Bradley’s own healing came years into faithful practice, after wounds he had carried for over two decades. The passage promises that God works through this practice. It does not promise that one conversation will dissolve what took years to form.
What James does is make the forgiven person’s next step concrete. Your forgiveness rests on God’s faithfulness, whether or not you ever tell anyone. Yet the letter that warns most severely about the damage words can do ends by handing those words a different task. Someone you trust hears the thing you have hidden, prays and speaks truth back to you. In James’s view, this is how the forgiven become whole together.
