Yes. God sees you, and one of the clearest places Scripture shows it is the story of a woman almost no one in her household was looking out for. Hagar was a servant, used and then mistreated until she ran, alone in the desert with nowhere to go. God found her there, and she gave him a name: the God who sees. Being seen did not end her troubles at once, and it may not feel like much to you right now. But the question you are carrying is one the Bible takes seriously.
Is It Faithless to Ask God Whether He Sees Me?
Many hurting Christians never say the question out loud. They worry it sounds like unbelief, or that someone at church will hear it as a sign their faith has failed. Dieula Previlon, a minister and therapist who does trauma work with women in Haiti, Uganda, Congo and Kenya, knows that fear well. She says it is a question people are often afraid to ask in public, because they worry about what others will think of a Christian asking it.
She did not come to the question as a professional. She came to it as a grieving sister. In the season when she began writing her book, her family suffered three significant losses, one of them her only and youngest brother. She describes what rose up in her then:
“Okay, God, do you even see me, this Black woman who has been serving you for all my life? Do you see me? Do you care?”
— Dieula Previlon
Notice what kind of question that is. It is not a debate about why suffering exists in general. It is a person who has given her life to God asking whether she still registers with him. That is a relational question, and it calls for a different kind of answer. An argument about God’s goodness can be correct and still miss the person asking. What she wanted to know was whether God was looking at her.
Previlon found she was not alone. Her friends asked it. Her clients asked it. The women her organization serves around the world asked it. And she points out that the Bible itself holds “countless examples of men and women of God who are sitting with this question.” Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, talking with her, named Job and David as examples. Scripture does not treat this cry as rebellion. It records it, again and again, from people God had not abandoned.
So if the question is in you, asking it is not a step away from God. It is speech directed at him. You cannot ask someone whether they see you unless you still believe someone is there.
Who Was Hagar, and What Actually Happened to Her?
Hagar’s story begins in Genesis 16. She was an Egyptian servant belonging to Sarai, Abram’s wife. Sarai could not have children, so she gave Hagar to Abram to bear a child for her. Hagar had no say in this that the text records. When she became pregnant, tension broke out between the two women. Abram handed the matter back to Sarai and told her to do as she pleased. Genesis 16:6 says, “And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.”
That is a plain description of a woman with almost no power, treated harshly by the people who controlled her life, running into the wilderness pregnant and alone. The text does not soften it.
Then the story turns:
“And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur” (Genesis 16:7).
The word that matters is found. Hagar was not searching for God. She was getting away. God came looking for her.
The angel speaks to her about the child she is carrying and tells her to name him Ishmael, “because the LORD hath heard thy affliction” (Genesis 16:11). The name Ishmael carries the idea that God hears, and the verse itself explains why: her pain had been heard. Before Hagar says a word about God, God has already said a word about her suffering.
Then comes her response:
“And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?” (Genesis 16:13).
The first half is clear enough. The second half is hard to translate, and versions render it in different ways, but it carries her amazement that she has seen, and lived to see, the God who sees her. Within Genesis, she is the first person recorded giving God a name. The place itself became known by that experience (Genesis 16:14).
Why Does It Matter That the Name Came From the Wilderness?
Previlon says she came across Hagar almost by accident, and that she sat with her story for a long time. She describes Hagar as a woman who is traumatized and misunderstood all throughout. Then she asked herself what question Hagar must have been holding before she spoke that name. Her conclusion: “I bet Hagar had that same question I had.”
Her reasoning is simple and worth slowing down for:
“That proclamation does not come out of nothing. She had to be sitting in her own pain, in her own challenges.”
— Dieula Previlon
Previlon is making an inference here, not quoting a line from Genesis. The text does not record Hagar asking whether God sees her. But the inference is a fair reading of the shape of the story. People do not usually invent a name like “the God who sees me” while they feel noticed and safe. They speak it when they have been invisible and then discover they were not.
That changes how we hold the name. The God who sees was not named by a priest in a sanctuary or a patriarch at the height of his blessing. He was named by a servant woman in the desert, the person in the story with the least standing. If God’s seeing reached her there, it is not reserved for the people whose lives look put together. The wilderness is not a place outside his sight. In Hagar’s case, it is where his sight was first put into words.
But God Sent Her Back. Doesn’t That Weaken the Answer?
This part of the story deserves honesty, especially for anyone reading it with a history of abuse. In Genesis 16:9, the angel tells Hagar to return to Sarai and submit to her. For many readers, that is the hardest sentence in the chapter.
A few things can be said carefully. Genesis is narrative. It describes what God told one woman, in one situation, with a specific promise attached about her son and his descendants. It does not lay down a rule that people being harmed should go back to those harming them. Reading it that way would turn a description into a command the text never gives. Nothing in God’s word to Hagar approves of how Sarai treated her. The same passage that sends her back is the passage where God says he has heard her affliction.
Scripture does not explain everything about that instruction, and it is better to admit that than to smooth it over. What the text does show is that Hagar went back carrying something she did not have before: a promise, a name for her son and a name for God. Her circumstances were not instantly fixed. Her standing before God was no longer in question.
If you are being hurt by someone now, this story is not asking you to return to them. God’s seeing is never permission for someone else’s cruelty.
If God Sees Me, Why Doesn’t It Feel Like It?
Hagar’s story does not end in Genesis 16. Years later, in Genesis 21, she is sent away again, this time with her son, and she ends up once more in the wilderness, expecting him to die. God speaks to her a second time:
“What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is” (Genesis 21:17).
Then God opens her eyes to see a well of water.
That detail matters. Being seen by God the first time did not protect Hagar from a second wilderness. It is possible to know God sees you and still end up in a dry place again. Being seen is not a guarantee against pain. It is a promise about who is present in it.
Previlon reads the larger arc of Hagar’s life with hope: “Hagar did not die in the wilderness. God did show up for Hagar, and there was healing.” That is her reading of where the story leads, and it is a fair one. It is not a promise that your situation will resolve on a particular timeline, and Previlon herself refuses that kind of promise. She describes people coming to her after horrific losses, hoping to be healed overnight. Her answer is direct: “That’s not how it works. We have to go on a journey.”
So the feeling of being unseen does not settle the question. Pain can drown out almost everything else, including the sense of God’s nearness. The absence of that feeling tells you how much you are carrying. It does not tell you that God has looked away. Hagar did not feel seen when she ran. She was seen anyway, and she only knew it when God spoke.
Previlon also insists that healing has to begin gently, not with pressure. People who have been traumatized, she says, cannot simply be told to turn their lives around. “It has to start with care, tenderness and love, and the same love, care and tenderness that Jesus offers.” If the way you have been told to deal with your pain sounds more like a demand than like that, the problem may not be your faith.
Is It Enough to Be Seen by God Alone?
Here the conversation between Fields and Previlon adds something many Christians resist. Fields observes, “And sometimes we’re comfortable with God seeing us. We want God to see us, but we don’t want people to see us.” Prayer, she says, lets you show God who you are. Community lets other people see you too.
Previlon describes what happens when no one is seen: “Everyone’s in hiding. Everyone’s in isolation, and then shame takes root, and it just festers and runs wild.” Her point is not that God’s seeing falls short. It is that God often makes his care visible through people. Hagar heard God through a messenger at a well. Many hurting people today first feel seen through a friend, a pastor, a counselor or a small circle that lets them tell the truth.
Previlon has heard the same testimony from women in Haiti, Uganda and Congo, many of whom have little access to professional care. Everywhere she goes, she says, they tell her, “If it wasn’t for the Lord, I would’ve died already.” That testimony does not prove anything by itself about your situation. But it comes from people who have lived through far more than most, and who name God as the one holding them, alongside the communities they lean on.
What Can I Do With This Question Today?
You do not have to resolve your pain to bring it to God. You can say the question to him in your own words, the way Previlon did. That is not a failure of faith. It is the kind of prayer Scripture preserves.
Then consider telling one person you trust. Not everyone, and not all at once. One person who has shown they can carry what you tell them. If your pain is heavy enough that it is affecting your sleep, your work or your safety, a trained counselor is part of how God cares for people, not a sign that you trusted him too little.
If someone is harming you now, or if you are thinking about ending your life, reach out. A real person will answer, any time of day.

Hagar’s name for God was not a slogan she was handed. It was what she said after God found her in the place she least expected anyone to find her. The question do you even see me and the name the God who sees me belong to the same story. One is asked in the wilderness. The other is spoken there too.
Quick Answers
Does God really see me when I am suffering? Yes. Genesis 16 records God finding Hagar in the wilderness and hearing her affliction, and she named him the God who sees. Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
Is it wrong to ask God whether he sees me? No. Scripture records many faithful people bringing this kind of question to God. Asking it is a way of speaking to him, not walking away from him.
Why doesn’t it feel like God sees me? Pain can drown out the sense of God’s presence. Hagar was seen before she knew it, and she ended up in the wilderness a second time even after meeting God. Feelings matter, but they do not decide whether he is near.
Does Hagar’s story mean I should go back to someone who hurt me? No. God’s instruction to Hagar was given to one woman in one situation, and the same passage shows God hearing her affliction. It is not a command for people being harmed to return to their abusers.
Will God heal me quickly if I trust him? Scripture does not promise a timeline. Previlon describes healing from trauma as a journey that begins with care and gentleness, often with the help of other people.
