If you are deciding whether to leave your fraternity or sorority, the hardest question may not be what Scripture allows. It may be why you want what you want. What follows is a slow practice for examining your own reasons before God, so that whatever you decide comes from honest repentance and not from pressure to perform a ritual. Work through it alone over about two weeks, or with two or three believers who know you well. Take the parts in order, since each builds on the one before.
Some things are clear from the start. Scripture calls every believer to repent of sin and to turn from anything that has taken God’s place. Scripture does not name Greek-letter organizations, and faithful Christians reach different conclusions about them. Some leave in good conscience. Some stay in good conscience. The work here is to find out what your own conscience, under Scripture, actually requires, and to notice where something other than conscience is doing the deciding.
First, write down your reason twice
Before you open a Bible, take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle.
On the left, write the reason you would give in church for leaving or staying. Use whatever words come naturally, including spiritual ones.
On the right, write the reason you would give if no one could hear you and nothing were at stake. Include the less flattering parts: a falling-out with a chapter member, embarrassment about something you did during intake, fear of what your new church friends think, loyalty you are afraid to lose, a sense that you have outgrown the group.
Do not try to reconcile the columns yet. If they say the same thing, good. If they differ, the gap between them is what this practice will work with. You never have to show this page to anyone.
Read three passages slowly
Read each passage aloud twice. The first time, simply notice what happens. The second time, write answers to the observation questions.
Acts 19:13-20
Luke describes new believers in Ephesus this way in Acts 19:18-19: “And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.” The KJV’s “curious arts” means magic, the use of spells and rites to gain spiritual power.
- Whose deeds did these believers confess?
- What did they destroy, and who did it belong to?
- Look back at verses 13-16. What happened just before this, when men tried to use the name of Jesus as a formula?
Notice the order. Confession of their own sin comes first, and the costly act follows it. Notice too that Luke places a failed spoken formula right before this scene of genuine repentance. That arrangement is a reading of how the chapter is built, not a command, but it should make anyone cautious about treating recited words as the thing that sets a person free.
Acts 8:9-24
Simon, a former sorcerer, wants to buy the apostles’ power. Peter’s answer in Acts 8:22 is this: “Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee.”
- Where does Peter locate Simon’s problem?
- What remedy does Peter give him?
1 Kings 19:19-21
Elisha is plowing when Elijah’s mantle falls on him. He asks to say goodbye to his parents, then slaughters his oxen, cooks them with the plow’s wooden gear, feeds the people, and follows Elijah.
- What does Elisha give up, and how does he do it?
- What does the text say, or not say, about why he left?
Hold this third passage loosely. It is a narrative about one prophet’s call into a particular ministry, and it describes rather than commands. It is not a story about leaving a sinful association, so it cannot settle your question. What it can show is that a decisive break may still be made openly, with a goodbye and a meal.
Now put the three side by side. In Ephesus, people turned from a practice the text treats as incompatible with faith in Christ. In Samaria, the issue was a heart that wanted spiritual power on its own terms. With Elisha, something was left because of a call elsewhere. Write one sentence naming which of these, if any, resembles your situation. It is possible that none does, and that is worth knowing too.
The card nobody can argue with
In a Jude 3 Project podcast conversation, Lisa Fields asked Dr. Dan Morrison, a United States Navy chaplain, where Scripture shows people loosing themselves from spiritual bondage by declaring renunciations. Her reading turned up repentance and the casting out of demons, but not a believer renouncing a false idol by declaration and then being right with God. Morrison agreed he did not think you would find that pattern. He noted that some Christian traditions renounce the devil and all his works in baptism, but questioned long lists of named renunciations that go far beyond it.
The case for a spoken renunciation deserves a fair hearing before you set it aside. Christians who value it see it as an act of conscience: saying aloud before witnesses that you no longer give your allegiance to something can mark a clear break and make a private turning public, much as the Ephesians burned their books “before all men.” For someone whose membership did involve devotions they now regret, such words can be an honest expression of repentance rather than a substitute for it. Weigh that. Would saying words aloud express something you have already confessed to God, or would it stand in for a confession you have not yet made?
Morrison then raised something closer to home. He pointed to how tight-knit these groups are, especially among Black Americans, where members come through together and the chapter becomes a brotherhood or a sisterhood. Cutting those ties hurts, and explaining it is harder still. Morrison observed that when he puts religious language on a decision, “it relieves me of some of my responsibility” to explain himself to the people he is leaving. He asked, “how often do we use religious language as a Trump card?”
He told a story from his first church. A member said God had told them to go elsewhere, so Morrison prayed with them and blessed them on their way. They were upset that he did not argue. His reasoning was simple: “What kind of pastor am I if I’m trying to convince you to disobey God?” He came to think the person had been ready to stay, but having invoked God, felt bound by it. Voicing that person’s position, Morrison said: “I pulled the God card. So now I guess I got to go.”
Lisa Fields named the cost of that move. When people do not know how to have hard conversations, she said, “So you use God as an escape. So you can avoid conversation.”
Go back to your two columns. Is the left column shielding you from a conversation you dread? Is it making a decision sound more certain than you feel? Ephesians 4:25 says, “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” Paul is not writing about fraternities or about invoking God’s name. He is describing the honesty that belongs to a life that has put off the old self. The inference is this: if spiritual language is covering a reason you will not say plainly, it is working against the truthfulness the verse asks for.
Test the reason in both directions
The God card can be played to stay as easily as to leave, and fear can push either way. Answer each question in a sentence or two.
- If I am leaving: Is there a specific oath, ceremony or devotion I took part in that I now believe conflicts with my allegiance to Christ? Can I name it plainly, without exaggerating it or relying on rumor about other chapters?
- If I am staying: Has this organization taken a place in my life, my loyalty or my sense of worth that belongs to God? How would I know?
- Either way: If no one would ever learn what I decided, would I still need to do it?
- Either way: Is anyone pressing me to recite particular words? Would those words change what I would actually confess to God?
Two passages can steady you. In 1 Corinthians 10:21, Paul draws a firm line at participation in another god’s worship: “Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils.” And Romans 14:23 warns against acting against your own conscience: “for whatsoever is not of faith is sin.” The first shows where the line is. The second means that a troubled conscience should not be overridden to keep the peace, and a clear one should not be replaced by someone else’s anxiety.
Remember also what Paul says has already happened. Colossians 1:13 speaks of the Father “Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son”. If you leave, you are not freeing yourself by your own words. You are acting in a freedom Christ has already given.
A two-week practice
- Days 1-3. Each morning, pray Psalm 139:23-24 slowly: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Then reread your columns and adjust what has become clearer.
- Days 4-6. If there is real sin connected to your membership, confess it specifically to God, the way the Ephesians confessed “their deeds” in Acts 19:18. Name what you did. Do not confess on behalf of the whole organization.
- Days 7-9. Write out what you would say to a close member of your chapter about your decision, whichever way you lean. Keep it plain, as Jesus asks in Matthew 5:37: “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.” Leave out “God told me” and see whether your reason still stands.
- Days 10-12. Take what you have written to two mature believers who know you, ideally people who do not share the same opinion about Greek life. Morrison’s counsel for unclear spiritual matters was communal: “Let’s pray together. Let’s discern together. And let’s see.” Ask them to question you, not decide for you.
- Days 13-14. Rest. Then decide, or decide you need more time. Both are honest outcomes.
Working through this as a group
Keep the group small and keep the decision with each person. Nobody should leave with a verdict assigned by the room, and no one should be asked to read the right-hand column aloud. Some may arrive having already been told, by a ministry or a relative, that they must recite a renunciation. Let them describe that experience without pressure, and do not mock either those who pressed them or those who complied.
Watch for a quieter test Lisa Fields offered in the same conversation. If a focus on spiritual danger leaves someone more hostile and critical toward others, she said, “you may not be growing in maturity. You may be growing in something else.” Morrison asked a similar question about spiritual fascinations: “does my fascination with this bring me closer to Jesus? Does it make me more like him?”
Questions to talk through
- In Acts 19, what made the Ephesians’ bonfire an act of repentance and not a show? What would a show have looked like?
- Peter told Simon to repent and pray. Why might a script feel more satisfying to someone in Simon’s position?
- When might a spoken renunciation be an honest act of conscience, and when might it skip the heart?
- Have you ever used God’s name, or heard it used, to end a conversation that needed to happen? What did it cost the relationship?
- What would honest faithfulness look like for a believer who decides to stay in their organization?
- Morrison said it is “you and Jesus in the context of the community of faith.” Who in your life can tell you the truth about your motives?
What to carry out of this
Look at your two columns one last time. The aim is a decision that rests on what is true, confessed honestly to God and spoken plainly to the people it affects. If your reason can survive being said without the God card, you can say it with confidence. If it cannot, you have found the next thing to bring before him.
