Most arguments about Christians and demons go wrong because they ask one question when the Bible asks two. The first is who owns a person. The second is what can press on a person, trouble them, or gain ground in them. Jon Thompson, a Toronto pastor who has prayed with people about the demonic for some 25 years, answers the first question firmly: a Christian belongs to Christ and cannot be owned by a demon. He answers the second more cautiously, arguing that a believer can still be influenced, even inwardly. Faithful Christians disagree with that second claim. His distinction still does useful work, because it turns the medical-or-spiritual question into a matter of diagnosis rather than a verdict on whether someone is saved.
Where Does the Word “Possessed” Lead Readers Astray?
In modern English, to possess something is to own it. So when a reader meets the phrase “possessed with devils” in Matthew 4:24, the word quietly suggests a transfer of title, as if the person now belongs to the demon. Thompson thinks that is where the confusion starts. He separates three things that the single English word blurs together.
The first is oppression. In Thompson’s words, “oppression is when the demonic tempt us from the outside to break God’s law.” He points to the temptation of Jesus as the model. Pressure from outside is the normal experience of every believer, and no one argues that it threatens salvation.
The second is possession in the strict sense of ownership. Here Thompson makes a striking claim: every human being is possessed, because everyone is owned by someone. He says that “possession is positional, and sometimes presence,” and he grounds the ownership side in two Pauline texts. Second Corinthians 4:4 says of unbelievers that “the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not.” Ephesians 2:2 describes “the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” On the other side, Paul tells the Corinthians, “ye are bought with a price” (1 Corinthians 6:20). Thompson is careful about what he does not claim. Being owned by the enemy does not mean a demon lives inside every unbeliever. Ownership is about allegiance and standing, and a Christian’s standing is settled.
The third category is the one that makes the debate hard. Thompson calls it presence, or demonization: influence that operates from within a person without owning them. He argues that the Greek text behind the English “possessed” never uses the vocabulary Greek speakers used for ownership. In his account, the Gospels simply describe people as tormented, vexed, or as having a spirit.
That is his claim about the Greek, and readers should test it. Part of it can be checked in English, though. The King James text itself often avoids the language of ownership. A Canaanite mother cries out that “my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil” (Matthew 15:22). In the synagogue at Capernaum “there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil” (Luke 4:33). Vexed and had are verbs of affliction and condition, not title. If the Gospel writers meant ownership, their wording does not show it.
What Does Paul Mean by Giving “Place” to the Devil?
The key text for Thompson’s middle category sits inside a passage addressed squarely to believers. Ephesians 4 begins a long section on how people who have “learned Christ” should live. In verses 26 and 27, Paul writes:
“Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil” (Ephesians 4:26–27).
Three verses later, in the same paragraph, he writes, “And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption” (Ephesians 4:30).
Those two verses side by side make the reading problem plain. The readers are sealed by the Spirit. Paul still warns them that unresolved anger can hand the devil a place. Many modern translations render that word place as “foothold” or “opportunity,” and the difference matters.
Thompson argues that the foothold is more than an opening. He reads it as a real presence. His summary is that a believer can be saved, sealed and bought, and yet something can gain a foothold inside them without owning them. He offers a picture for it: “The squatters don’t own the house, but they can damage the house.” The title deed never changes hands. The damage is still real and still has to be dealt with.
Other careful readers take place in Ephesians 4:27 as opportunity or advantage. On that reading, Paul is warning that lingering anger gives the devil an advantage in a believer’s life and relationships, but he is not describing an indwelling. The verse can carry that weight without strain. What the text clearly establishes is narrower than either side sometimes admits. Sealed believers can give the devil some kind of ground through ongoing sin. Whether that ground is inside the person is the contested step, and the Greek word alone does not settle it.
Why Does Luke 13 Matter So Much to This Question?
Thompson calls Luke 13:10–17 the turning point in his own thinking. The literary setting is a synagogue on the Sabbath. Luke reports that “there was a woman which had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bowed together, and could in no wise lift up herself” (Luke 13:11). When the synagogue ruler objects to a Sabbath healing, Jesus answers:
“And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan hath bound, lo, these eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day?” (Luke 13:16).
Thompson builds two arguments on this passage.
The first concerns her standing. Thompson observes that “she’s the only woman from Genesis to Revelation who’s called the daughter of Abraham,” and he argues that in Luke the phrase marks a person in right relationship with God, not ethnicity alone. His supporting text is Zacchaeus, of whom Jesus says, “This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham” (Luke 19:9). Zacchaeus was already Jewish by birth; the phrase arrives with his repentance. If that pattern holds, the bent woman is a faithful worshiper who was still bound.
The second concerns the body. Thompson notes that the woman’s condition is a recognizable physical disorder, and that Luke, whom Paul calls “Luke, the beloved physician” (Colossians 4:14), still attributes its root to Satan. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, drew out the implication in their conversation: a writer trained to think medically is the one telling this story, so he is in a position to tell a spiritual cause from a physical one. And Luke does make that distinction. He records many healings with no demon mentioned. Matthew 4:24 does the same thing in one sentence. It lists those “possessed with devils,” those who were “lunatick,” and those that “had the palsy” as separate groups. The Gospel writers did not treat every illness as demonic or every demonic case as an illness.
The limits of Luke 13 should be stated as plainly as its force. The event happens before the cross and before Pentecost, so it cannot by itself show what is possible for someone indwelt by the Spirit. Thompson grants this openly. Many interpreters also read “daughter of Abraham” as a mark of covenant belonging within Israel rather than a statement about her personal faith. The passage strongly supports one conclusion: a bodily condition can have a spiritual root in a person who belongs among God’s people. It supports the further claim about Christians only as part of a wider argument.
What Is the Strongest Case Against Thompson’s Reading?
Thompson knows the objection well, because he once held it. He grew up in churches that taught the devil can have no inner influence on a saved person, since God and a demon cannot share the same space. The objection has real biblical weight. The New Testament letters tell believers to resist the devil (James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:8–9) and to stand firm. They never describe an apostle casting a demon out of a church member. Ephesians 4:27 can reasonably be read as opportunity rather than residence. Luke 13 comes before Pentecost. On this view, the honest conclusion is that believers face the devil as an outside enemy, and nothing more can be shown.
Thompson’s reply is a question about consistency. Paul names three enemies: the flesh, the world and the devil. Every Christian agrees that the Holy Spirit lives in people who still sin, and that believers can drift into worldliness without losing their salvation. So Thompson asks, “Why are we elevating one enemy over the others?” If the Spirit’s presence does not make sin impossible in a believer, he argues, it is not obvious why it would make demonic influence impossible.
The reply is serious, but it is not airtight. An objector can answer that sin is a believer’s own disordered desire, while a demon is a separate personal agent, and the two cases may not work the same way. The disagreement finally rests on how much weight Ephesians 4:27, Luke 13 and Acts 5:3, where Peter asks Ananias “why hath Satan filled thine heart,” can bear.
Thompson himself does not ask readers to take his word for it. He says, “don’t believe a word I said,” and urges people to search the Scriptures and church history. That is the right posture on a question where faithful Christians land in different places. The Jude 3 Project does not hold a house position on whether a believer can be demonized in Thompson’s sense. It does affirm that the spiritual world is real and that Christ has authority over it.
How Does This Help Tell a Spiritual Problem From a Medical One?
Here the categories pay off, whatever one concludes about the middle one. If a Christian cannot be owned by a demon, then the question of what is causing a believer’s suffering no longer decides whether they belong to God. Thompson describes most spiritual conflict in the church as a matter of sanctification, not conversion. Once the person’s standing is off the table, the question becomes a matter of cause, and causes have to be examined, not assumed.
Thompson’s warning cuts in both directions. He says that “if you don’t have the gift of discernment truly identified and functioning your church, you’ll all the time call medical things demonic when you shouldn’t.” He follows it at once with the reverse error: “And you’ll also call demonic things, medical things.” He works alongside psychologists, psychiatrists and doctors, and he insists the categories overlap: “many, many people I’ve prayed with have genuine mental illness and also the demonic are connected to them. And so it’s actually both at the same time.”
He also rejects the habit, common in some charismatic settings, of naming a spirit behind every diagnosis, and he gives ADHD as his example. He says that kind of labeling makes people feel like second-class Christians and wounds them. His own rough estimate is that “the devil’s probably behind every third bush,” which he offers with a laugh. He means less than some people want and more than others admit. He adds that “not every sickness is connected to the demonic.” Even in the case he describes most fully, a woman with chronic pain who later found relief through prayer, he notes that her family had already pursued medical and psychological answers first.
This lines up with how the Jude 3 Project approaches the subject. The ministry urges discernment so that genuine medical and psychological needs are not mislabeled as demonic. It holds that spiritual warfare and mental health are not an either/or, and it refuses both to spiritualize what is medical and to medicalize what is spiritual. It also affirms that seeking therapy is not a failure of faith.
Thompson gives church leaders a short list of questions for any troubling experience: “Is it from the Lord? Is it demonic? Is it mental illness? Is it the tacos from last night?” The humor makes a serious point. He says leaders are responsible for interpreting experience rather than dismissing it, and interpreting means keeping every real possibility open. For anyone struggling, that means a doctor’s evaluation and prayerful support belong together.
If the darkness includes thoughts of ending your life, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. That is part of caring for the life God gave you, not a step away from faith.
When something spiritual does seem to be involved, Thompson’s starting point is ordinary rather than dramatic. He says “the starting place is the confession of sin, the forgiveness of others done in community, safe people without fear.” He ties the demonic to hiddenness and goes back to Adam and Eve hiding in the garden. Coming into the light among healthy believers, he argues, leaves the enemy nowhere to live. He is equally wary of the opposite excess: “I didn’t stop being a conservative legalist to become a charismatic legalist.”
What Should a Frightened Believer Take From This?
The ownership question is the one Scripture answers most clearly, and it answers in the believer’s favor. Paul’s warning in Ephesians 4 is addressed to people already sealed until the day of redemption, and the warning does not withdraw the seal. Thompson ends where Paul does:
“And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it” (Colossians 2:15).
Thompson’s pastoral point is that a frightened believer is not fighting alone, because the risen Christ’s Spirit lives in them and is the one who contends.
This is why the distinction matters more than any one interpretation of the middle category. A Christian who knows they are owned by Christ can ask honestly what is wrong. They can see a physician, talk to a counselor, confess to a trusted friend and ask for prayer, all without wondering whether the answer will cancel their belonging. Fear of the verdict is what keeps many people hidden. Settling who owns them frees them to find out what is actually going on.
Quick Answers
- Can a Christian be possessed by a demon? If possessed means owned, Thompson argues no. Believers are bought with a price and sealed by the Spirit. Whether a demon can exert influence from within a believer is disputed among faithful Christians.
- What does “give place to the devil” mean? In Ephesians 4:27, Paul warns sealed believers that unresolved anger gives the devil ground. Thompson reads that ground as an inner presence. Many other interpreters read it as opportunity or advantage.
- Does the Bible treat every illness as demonic? No. Luke 13 describes a bodily condition with a spiritual root, but the Gospels also record many healings with no demon in view. Matthew 4:24 lists the demonized and the sick as separate groups.
- Should I see a doctor or ask for prayer? Both. Thompson works alongside medical and mental health professionals, and he says some people face illness and spiritual trouble at the same time. Getting an evaluation is wise, not faithless.
