Christian Scripture presents angels and demons as real beings who did not retire when the apostles died. Angels appear at the empty tomb, at the ascension, throughout Acts and again in Revelation. The apostles write as if hostile spiritual powers are still active. So the useful question is narrower than are they real? It is this: what are angels doing when they show up? Read the accounts closely and a pattern appears. Angels often come to someone who is cut off from other believers, and the encounter tends to end with that person back among them. Reflexively blaming demons usually moves the other way, away from responsibility and away from people.
This guide works through those texts in order. You can use it alone over a week or with a group across one or two sessions. Keep a Bible open. Each section asks you to look at a passage before anyone explains it, so try not to read ahead to the conclusions.
Start with your own reflex
Before you open a passage, notice what you already do with this subject. In a Jude 3 Project podcast conversation with Lisa Fields, Dr. Dan Morrison, a United States Navy chaplain, described two opposite habits among believers. Some explain away the spiritual parts of Scripture. Others find a spiritual cause behind everything. His sharper point is that many people do both. They drop the spiritual explanation when it would be inconvenient and pick it up when it would be useful.
Think of a recent time something went badly wrong, and a time something went unexpectedly right. What explanation did you reach for first in each case? Keep your answer to yourself if you like. You will come back to it at the end.
Read Acts 12:1-17 slowly
Read the whole passage once without stopping. Then read it again with these observations in mind:
- What happens to James in verse 2, and how does that change Peter’s position among the apostles?
- Where is the church while Peter sits in prison (verse 5)?
- In verses 7-10, list what the angel does. Then list what Peter has to do himself.
- When does the angel leave (verse 10)?
- Where does Peter go first once he is free, and what happens at the door (verses 12-17)?
Start with Acts 12:2: “And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.” Luke places that execution right before Peter’s arrest, and Morrison draws out what it means. With James dead, Peter is now by himself within the apostolic band. The isolation is real, and Herod imposed it. Peter did not choose it.
Yet Acts 12:5 adds a detail that keeps the story from being about a lonely hero: “Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.” Peter is separated from the church, but the church has not forgotten him. The angel arrives into that gap.
Look at your two lists from verses 7-10. The angel wakes Peter, the chains fall, the gate opens. But Peter has to dress, put on his sandals and walk. And once they reach the street, the angel leaves. He does not stay as a private companion. Then Acts 12:12 tells us where Peter goes: “And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.” He goes straight to the people who were praying for him.
Lisa Fields reads the scene this way: “So the angels help him, but it equips him to go back to community.” The angel’s work ends where the church’s work resumes. Even the comedy at the door, with Rhoda running off and leaving Peter knocking, happens inside a household of believers. That is where Luke wants us to see him.
One guardrail before going further. Acts is narrative. Luke describes what happened to Peter. He does not command readers to expect the same thing in their own crises. The passage shows us what God did and what that act aimed at. It does not hand us a guarantee.
Test the pattern against more passages
Morrison states the pattern carefully: “Angelic encounters by people often occur when people are isolated and alone.” He names his own exception, the shepherds at the nativity, and says “you don’t really find angels appearing to groups of people most of the time.” A careful reader should test a claim like that rather than simply accept it. That is this section’s practice.
Take the passages below one at a time. For each, write down three things: the person’s situation just before the encounter, what the angel says or does, and where the person goes or what they do next.
- Genesis 32:22-32, with Genesis 33:1-4
- Joshua 5:13-15, with Joshua 6:1-2
- Mark 1:12-20
- Acts 5:17-21
- Acts 10:1-8
- Acts 27:20-26
- Luke 2:8-20
Here is what a close reading tends to turn up. Compare it with your own notes rather than replacing them.
Genesis 32:24 is plain about Jacob’s situation: “And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.” The text calls his opponent a man. Jacob afterward says he has seen God face to face, and Hosea 12:4 speaks of an angel. Interpreters differ on exactly who wrestled Jacob, and the passage does not settle it for us. What follows is clearer. The next morning Jacob walks toward the brother he had cheated, and Esau runs to embrace him. The solitary night leads into reconciliation.
Joshua is by himself near Jericho when a man with a drawn sword appears. Joshua asks, “Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?” The reply, in Joshua 5:14, is “Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come.” The answer refuses to make heaven a partisan of Joshua’s side. Then Joshua is sent back to lead the people.
Mark 1:13 reads: “And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.” When Morrison raised this scene, Lisa Fields added that Jesus “was also alone.” Now keep reading. Within a few verses Jesus is beside the Sea of Galilee calling Simon, Andrew, James and John. The wilderness opens onto the forming of a community.
Acts 5 is the honest complication. An angel frees a group of apostles, not one isolated person. Even there, the instruction sends them outward, back to the temple to speak to the people. Cornelius in Acts 10 sees an angel while praying in his own house. But the angel does not preach to him. He tells Cornelius to send for Peter, so the gospel arrives through another human being. In Acts 27:23 Paul, a prisoner on a ship in a storm, reports, “For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve.” Then he stands up among the crew and passengers and encourages all of them.
So what does the test show? The claim about isolation holds often but not always, which is exactly how Morrison phrased it. The other half of the pattern holds more firmly. In nearly every case the angel’s appearance turns the person toward others: a brother, an army, disciples, a crowd, a household, a ship’s company. The shepherds fit this too. They hurry to Bethlehem and tell what they heard. Lisa Fields names that half of the pattern directly: “the ministry of the Angels is to get you back to the community.”
Morrison links it to the earliest diagnosis in Scripture. Genesis 2:18 says, “It is not good that the man should be alone.” On his reading, an angel sent to an isolated believer is God refusing to leave that person without encouragement. He describes such an angel as “the closest thing you got to Jesus with some skin on.”
What the pattern does not say
Three limits keep this reading honest.
First, it is an observed tendency in narrative, not a promise. No passage says that every lonely believer will receive an angel. Most help in Scripture comes through people, and the stories above keep handing their main characters back to people.
Second, Morrison draws a line inside the idea of isolation. His examples involve imprisonment, persecution, sickness or crisis. He contrasts these with people who choose to pull away from other believers and call it a private faith. His correction to that posture: “it’s you and Jesus in the context of the community of faith.” Lisa Fields adds a sober observation about chosen withdrawal, often driven by fear of being hurt again: “Usually self isolation is where people are often tormented.” Neither speaker presents withdrawal as the path to a richer spiritual life.
Third, the communal direction runs both ways. Hebrews 13:2 says, “Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” Lisa Fields reads the two themes together. “One is fueling us to go back to community. And then the other is like helping us to do community better.” Morrison’s response was simple: “It’s all about community.”
The other direction: when the demon gets the blame
Now set the angel stories beside a different habit, the reflex that credits every problem to a demon. Scripture’s first account of that reflex is in Genesis 3. Read verses 9-19.
The man answers God, “The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat” (Genesis 3:12). The woman answers, “The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat” (Genesis 3:13). God then addresses all three. Lisa Fields notes that the serpent’s role is real enough to be judged, and still God “will still hold you responsible for your actions even if you were influenced by the enemy.” Morrison traces the same balance into Paul’s account of sin: “The devil has some responsibility and some role, but the human responsibility is there every single time.”
Morrison does not respond to the demon-everywhere reflex by denying the demonic. He sorts causes. Sometimes, he says, something spiritual does seem to be going on. Sometimes the cause is a person’s own choices, and he once told someone plainly, “This ain’t a demon. You did this.” And sometimes “we still live in a fallen world and things happen.” Even where something spiritual is involved, he says, “the demonic can exacerbate some of the things that we got going on in our lives.” The underlying struggle still has to be dealt with. When Lisa Fields added, “Let’s get you some therapy,” he agreed. This matches what Jude 3 teaches: the spiritual world is real and Christ has authority over it, discernment keeps medical and psychological needs from being mislabeled as demonic, and qualified care and prayerful support belong together.
Here the contrast with the angel stories comes into focus. In Acts 12 the angel opens the gate, but Peter walks, and he walks toward the church. The encounter returns him to responsibility and to people. The blame-the-demon reflex does the reverse. It moves responsibility off the person, and it can leave a fearful believer more suspicious of everyone nearby. Lisa Fields traces the reflex to a real need: “So much of our fascination with the demonic is us trying to make sense of the pain in our lives.” She also names how to tell where it is leading. If a fixation on demons makes someone hostile and critical toward others, “you may not be growing in maturity. You may be growing in something else.”
Morrison gives one test that covers both angels and demons: “does my fascination with this bring me closer to Jesus? Does it make me more like him? Does it bring me into the community of faith in a way that I’m cultivating the relationships that I need in order to grow in him?” The last question sums up what the passages in this guide keep doing.
If you are leading a group
Spend most of your time on the observation work in Acts 12 and the test passages. Splitting the seven passages among pairs works well, with each pair reporting its three notes. Let the group discover the Acts 5 complication themselves rather than explaining it in advance.
This subject can touch live loneliness. Never ask anyone to name a personal isolation or a spiritual struggle aloud. If someone shares something heavy, follow up privately afterward, and encourage real help from a pastor, counselor or doctor rather than treating the conversation as a fix. If anyone mentions thoughts of ending their life, point them to the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by call or text.
Questions to discuss
- In Acts 12 the angel does some things and leaves others to Peter. What does that division suggest about how God’s help and human action relate?
- Which test passage fit the isolation pattern least well? Does that exception weaken the pattern, or sharpen what it is actually about?
- Morrison separates isolation imposed by persecution or sickness from isolation a person chooses. Why might that difference matter? When is the line hard to draw?
- In Genesis 3, what would the story lose if God judged only the serpent? What would it lose if he judged only the humans?
- Picture a situation, not necessarily your own, where it would be hard to tell whether a struggle is spiritual, chosen or simply part of a broken world. What would discerning it alongside other believers look like in practice?
- Hebrews 13:2 points to strangers. Who is a stranger to your own church or circle right now, and what makes welcoming them difficult?
Back to your reflex
Return to the two explanations you reached for at the start. Read Acts 12:12 once more and notice the house full of people praying for someone they could not reach. Then ask the question this study has been building toward. Whatever you believe about the spiritual causes in your own life, is that belief moving you toward the people God has given you, or away from them?
