About Unspoken
Christianity’s story is incomplete when its African roots and Black voices are left out.
Is Christianity a white man’s religion? How has faith been used to justify oppression while also inspiring liberation? What does the history we rarely hear reveal about Christianity?
Unspoken: Giving Voice to the Forgotten Truth About Christianity invites you to explore these questions through Scripture, history, and reflection. This participant’s guide accompanies the Unspoken documentary, helping you examine Christianity’s African and African American roots while confronting its misuse in support of slavery, racism, and white supremacy.
Curated and edited by Don Carey, Lisa Fields, and Chris LaMark, and written by Yana Conner, Brandon Cleaver, and George Moore, the curriculum explores six topics:
- Black history in the Bible.
- Christianity’s African roots.
- The whitewashing of Christianity.
- The contrasting faith of slaveholders and enslaved people.
- The rise and contributions of the Black Church.
- A way forward through reflection and response.
Each chapter corresponds to a documentary segment and includes reflection questions to help you process what you read and watch. Use it for personal study or alongside the separate Leader’s Guide for church and small group discussions.
Discover a fuller history of the Christian faith, engage difficult questions about race and religion, and consider how this story shapes your faith today.
