Learning from Christians in other traditions will not water down what you believe unless you confuse two different acts: understanding a view and adopting it. The fear treats every point of contact as a point of surrender. That assumption does not hold up. Once it is removed, careful listening looks less like a threat to conviction and more like training for it. A believer who can sit patiently with another Christian’s reading of Scripture is better prepared to speak to people who do not share the faith at all.
What Exactly Is the Worry?
The fear deserves its strongest form. My beliefs about Scripture, baptism, worship and the Christian life came from people I trust. If I spend time inside other traditions, I will hear arguments I cannot answer on the spot. Some of them will move me. Each small movement carries me further from what I was taught, until conviction has thinned into a vague niceness that believes nothing in particular.
This is not a silly concern. Beliefs do change through exposure, and Scripture warns believers against being tossed about by every wind of doctrine (Ephesians 4:14). Dr. Dwight A. Moody, a Baptist preacher who founded the Academy of Preachers, knows the fear from the inside. He says that he and many of the young preachers he works with grew up and “were taught to be suspicious of people who were different,” and he names the questions that suspicion produces: “Well, do they really know Jesus? Do they really understand the gospel?” Some groups that use Christian words really do deny the gospel. The question is whether suspicion of every Christian who reads differently is the right response to that real danger.
Which Premise Is Carrying the Argument?
Lay the worry out step by step and it has three moves. Exposure to other traditions brings me into contact with views unlike mine. Contact makes change possible. Any change away from my tradition is a loss of conviction. The first two steps are true. The third does all the work, and it hides two further assumptions.
The first hidden assumption is that understanding a view is the same as accepting it. Moody separates the two. The openness he hopes for is “not giving up everything you believe or capitulating,” he says, “or converting every time, but at least being open to understanding and to appreciating somebody who thinks different than you do.” Understanding asks why another believer reads a passage on baptism or Mary the way they do. Appreciation recognizes that they can hold that reading and still love Scripture and Christ. Neither requires agreement. You can grasp an argument fully and still judge it wrong. In fact, you can judge it wrong responsibly only after you have grasped it.
The second hidden assumption is that my own tradition already holds the whole truth on every question it addresses. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, warns that a believer who never meets other faithful Christians will think “that your group or tribe has some kind of lock on the truth.” Her alternative is what she calls “a humble hermeneutic to realize that I could be wrong about this passage.” That is a modest claim. It does not say every interpretation is right. It says my interpretation of a given passage is the kind of thing that could be mistaken, which every honest reader already knows about at least one belief they used to hold.
Remove both assumptions and the third step collapses. Change is not automatically loss. Sometimes it is correction, sometimes it is deepening, and sometimes contact changes nothing except your ability to explain why you believe what you already believed.
Does “Truth Has Many Sides” Mean Every Tradition Is Equally Right?
This is the strongest objection, and it targets the language itself. Fields repeats a mentor’s saying: truth has many sides. A skeptical reader hears relativism: your truth, my truth, all equally valid.
But look at what she says the saying is for. In the preaching circles she describes, young preachers who had all studied the same text pushed back on one another so they could “sharpen one another as Proverbs says, and get to the core of the truth.” The proverb reads, “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend” (Proverbs 27:17). Sharpening makes sense only if there is an edge to sharpen toward. A truth with many sides is still one truth seen from more than one angle. Relativism denies there is a core at all, so it has no use for sharpening.
Moody’s own example points the same way. Studying how the Pentecostal and charismatic movement began, he says, “gives you an appreciation for its strengths and its weaknesses. It helps you to assess it and evaluate it.” Learning its critics then forces the next question: “These critics of Pentecostalism, are they right? Are they wrong?” Those questions make sense only to someone who believes some answers are better than others. Exposure to other traditions, in his account, does not end evaluation. It is what makes evaluation possible.
This is also why the fear misjudges what is at stake. The Jude 3 Project holds that on the essentials the church speaks with one voice, while on secondary matters faithful Christians have always disagreed, and that this is not a crisis. If that distinction is right, then most of what a believer hears across traditions concerns the second tier. Listening there does not put the first tier up for negotiation.
What Does the Verse Behind the Name Actually Hold Together?
The verse that gives the Jude 3 Project its name is usually quoted for its call to contend. The whole sentence reads:
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3).
Moody draws attention to the first half, which some translations render as the salvation we share. Believers often start out assuming that “we” means their own church or people who think like them, he observes. Meeting other believers who pray daily, read Scripture and bear witness to Christ, some with more courage than he has, taught him that the shared salvation “is a bigger we than you thought.”
The logical point is that Jude wrote both halves into one sentence. The call to contend assumes a faith with fixed content, delivered once. The phrase common salvation assumes a family that shares it. The fear about watering down reads only the second half and worries it will swallow the first. Jude does not set them against each other. A Christian who keeps only the contending half has misread the verse as surely as one who keeps only the shared half.
What About the Person Who Did Change Traditions?
An honest case has to face its own counterexample, and Moody supplies one. He assigned a devout Baptist student a reading list running through the history of Christian thought, including the eighth-century writer John of Damascus and his book The Orthodox Faith. Two years after graduating, the student invited Moody to his wedding at an Orthodox church. He and his fiancée had both become Orthodox. Moody recalls the student telling him, “When I read the book, I discovered myself.” The student went on to an Orthodox seminary and now pastors an Orthodox church.
A worried reader will point to this and say: there it is. Reading outside your tradition changed someone’s church. That is true, and anyone who promises that real listening carries no risk of change is not describing real listening.
But the example does not show what the fear predicts. The fear predicts dilution: a believer who drifts into vagueness and holds nothing firmly. This student moved from one form of committed Christian faith to another with highly defined convictions, then trained for ministry within it. Whatever a reader thinks of his conclusion, he did not lose conviction. He relocated it after study.
Moody adds the needed limit himself: “Now not everybody who reads a book from another tradition has that kind of dramatic experience.” His own life is the other data point. He had pastored Baptist churches for years before he ever entered a Lutheran church, at a service in Jerusalem where Scripture was read three times. He left deeply moved by hearing the gospel through those readings, and he remained a Baptist. Exposure produced a range of outcomes, from conversion to gratitude to sharper self-understanding. The fear predicts only one, and the evidence does not support it.
Why Would Patience With Christians Prepare Me for Everyone Else?
The second half of the case moves from inside the church to outside it. Moody frames it as a question: “If we can’t handle the diversity in our own Christian community, how can we possibly handle the diversity in the pluralism that’s in the world?”
This is not a deductive proof. It is a claim about how a skill transfers, and it needs to be tested. One objection is obvious: family quarrels are often harder than arguments with strangers. A dispute with another Christian over baptism can feel more personal, and more threatening, than a debate with an atheist who expects you to disagree. But that objection supports the transfer rather than defeating it. The skill being practiced is not agreement. It is staying steady while someone you take seriously sees a thing differently. If that skill is learned where the stakes feel highest and the common ground is widest, it is available where the common ground is thin.
Fields names the line that practice teaches. In the preaching circles, she says, “if you can’t defend your position without being defensive,” you will struggle with someone who does not accept the authority of Scripture at all. Defending a position is a matter of reasons. Being defensive is a matter of feeling threatened. Apologetics requires the first, and the second gets in its way.
Moody argues that the skill most built in that practice is listening. He has found that the source of someone’s unbelief or anger often has little to do with Jesus or the Bible, and that only listening uncovers it. The most effective apologetic, he concludes, is often “listening to people and honoring what they say,” and he clarifies that honoring is not agreeing. It means treating a person’s experience as serious rather than as something to be trumped by a verse. He does not discard answers. He affirms the call to be ready “to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15). His point concerns order: listening first, asking second, speaking third, a pattern he sees in the way Jesus answered questions with questions (Luke 10:25–37). Patience with another Christian’s reading of Scripture is where that order gets practiced.
Doesn’t This Put My Own Convictions on Mute?
Moody answers with an orchestra. He compares Baptists to the French horns: a small section worldwide, but one with a sound the music needs. “I’m glad as a Baptist to play my Baptist French horn,” he says. “I think we have an important sound that the orchestra needs to hear.” What he refuses is the demand that every other player put down their instrument and play his. Of a concert where everyone plays one instrument and one note, he asks, “Who would want to go to that kind of concert?” The horn player keeps playing. He also stops to listen to the violins and the tuba.
The analogy has a limit, and a careful reader should see it. In an orchestra, no instrument is wrong. In theology, some disagreements are about what is actually true. A Baptist and a Lutheran cannot both be right about the meaning of baptism in every respect. The orchestra settles whether distinct Christian voices belong together in one church. It does not settle which reading of a disputed passage is correct. That work still has to be done with the text, which is exactly why listening matters.
The posture underneath is humility, and Moody ties it to Christ. Paul writes, “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5), and then describes Christ taking the form of a servant. Moody calls listening “an incarnation skill.” The humility Paul describes belongs to someone fully certain of who he is, who chooses to set aside his own standing for the sake of others. A believer can be fully convinced about the gospel and still humble about whether his reading of a particular verse is the last word.
What Remains Unsettled?
This argument does not tell you where the line between essential and secondary falls on every question. Moody lists Mary and baptism as subjects where faithful Christians land differently, and Christians still debate how much weight some of those differences carry. Listening will not settle those debates for you. It gives you the understanding needed to weigh them, and it does not guarantee you will end where you began.
That risk is real, and the honest response is to weigh it against the alternative. A believer who never listens to Christians who read differently has kept conviction safe only by never testing it. That believer will eventually meet a skeptic, a Muslim neighbor or a friend who has walked away from church, and will meet them without ever having practiced staying steady in front of a serious disagreement. The risk of listening is that you might change your mind. The risk of not listening is that you will have nothing tested to offer when someone outside the faith finally asks why you believe.
