Rest is not a polite word for laziness, and John 15 shows why. In that chapter Jesus does not tell his disciples to stop working. He tells them where their fruitfulness comes from. A branch bears fruit by staying joined to the vine. Read that way, rest is an act of trust in the one who actually produces the fruit. Much of what we call hustle runs on the opposite belief: that if we let go, nothing will grow.
That is the reading Yvette Henry, author of the 30-day devotional Release, Rest, Remain, draws from the passage. It holds up, but only if the chapter is read on its own terms first.
The Setting of the Vine and Branches
John 15 belongs to a long section of teaching that runs from John 13 through John 17. Jesus is with his disciples on the night before his death. He has washed their feet, warned them that he is leaving and promised them the Holy Spirit. The vine and branches belong to that farewell. These words are meant to carry frightened followers through what is coming.
The genre is extended metaphor. Jesus opens with it: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman” (John 15:1). The KJV’s husbandman is an older word for a farmer or vinedresser, the person who tends the plant. So there are three roles in the picture from the first verse. The Father tends. The Son is the vine. The disciples are branches. Everything else in the passage depends on keeping those roles straight.
Henry came back to this familiar chapter in a season she describes as full of striving and operating in her own strength, when she had reached the end of herself. That context shapes what she found in it. The passage spoke to her as a correction to work that had come loose from its source.
What the Branch Actually Does
The key sentence is John 15:5:
“I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing” (John 15:5).
The verse puts the cause of fruit in the connection. The branch that abides bears much fruit. The verse before it makes the same point from the other direction: “As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me” (John 15:4). The phrase of itself carries the weight. A branch has no independent supply.
Henry puts the image in plain terms. “What do you see a branch do when it’s on a tree? It doesn’t do anything.” Then she names the one task left: “Its only responsibility is to remain attached to the vine.” In the picture, the Father is the one who tends the plant and brings in the harvest. Her conclusion is that if she wants a fruitful life, producing that fruit is finally his responsibility. She had been acting like the vinedresser. She was a branch.
The word remain in her book’s title fits the text well. The KJV usually says abide in this chapter, but it also says remain: Jesus speaks of his joy remaining in his disciples (John 15:11) and of their fruit remaining (John 15:16). Behind both English words stands the Greek verb menō, which means to stay or continue, and some translations render it remainthroughout. It is a relational word. It describes a branch that keeps its place on the vine.
If the Branch Does Nothing, Why Does Jesus Give Commands?
Here a careful reader has to push back on the image, and Henry pushes back on it herself. John 15 is full of imperatives. “Abide in me, and I in you” opens verse 4. Later comes “This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you” (John 15:12). Jesus ties abiding directly to obedience: “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love” (John 15:10).
So the branch does nothing in one specific sense. It does not generate the fruit or manufacture its own life. The passage still expects the disciples to obey, to love and to keep choosing to stay joined to Christ. Abiding is a sustained relationship with real content.
Henry admits she wants to feel productive, and that remaining can feel like sitting around. Her answer: “But it’s actually a very active posture to maintain and hold in relationship with the Lord.” That resolves the apparent contradiction in her own image. The branch receives the fruit’s life from the vine and works at staying connected. Hustle reverses that order. It labors over results and neglects the relationship that produces them.
The chapter also closes off a lazy reading: “Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit” (John 15:2). The KJV’s purgeth here means prunes or cleans. The passage expects fruit, and even fruitful branches get cut back. Rest in John 15 describes a life whose fruit comes from Christ, and that life is expected to be fruitful.
Who the Fruit Is For
John 15 never defines the fruit in one word, and Christian interpreters read it in more than one way. Some take it mainly as Christlike character, the kind of qualities Paul calls the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. Others connect it to mission. Jesus says, “Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain” (John 15:16), which points outward to people reached and served. Still others see it in the love and obedience the chapter keeps returning to. These readings overlap more than they compete.
Henry’s reading picks up a thread that runs through all of them. She says she had spent a long time trying to grow the fruit and eat it too. Then she saw that “it’s for the people who we do life with.” The surrounding verses point the same way. The commands in John 15:12–17 are about loving one another, and the fruit in verse 16 is tied to being sent.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, develops the point into a picture of mutual dependence: “God is bearing fruit in us for other people, but in other people, God is bearing fruit for us.” She argues that this frees us from doing the work for ourselves, which she says tends to make us self-absorbed, and moves us toward sacrificial living.
This changes what striving accomplishes. If the fruit belongs to others, exhausting myself to produce it on my own schedule puts me in the vinedresser’s place. It also closes me off from the fruit God is growing in other people for my sake. Henry applies this at home: when she invites her children into the kitchen to help, the load gets lighter, and they get a chance to grow. Fields notes that Jesus himself worked with the disciples around him.
Why Release Has to Come First
Henry’s book title is an order, and she insists the order matters. “Before you can actually rest, you have to release.” She pictures a clenched fist. Gripping things tight, she says, “this is not a restful position,” and a closed hand has no room to receive anything new. An open hand can let go and be filled.
Then she makes the connection at the center of this reading: “One of the things that I have come to understand is that release requires trust.” She goes further: “I could easily swap out the word rest for trust.”
That is where hustle shows its root, and Henry found it in her own habits more than once. During her book launch she kept waking straight into her laptop and skipping the walk, the Bible, the journal and the slow start that fill her. She caught the irony: “You’re so busy trying to make sure that this message makes it out there that you’re not even living it.” Her question to herself concerned trust in the God who had opened the door for the book.
The deeper version came earlier, when old grief she had never acknowledged collided with a new loss and the sadness felt out of proportion. She had been living by pressing on and moving on. She recounts a sermon from her friend Kobe Campbell about Mary Magdalene, who stayed at the empty tomb weeping after the disciples went home (John 20:10–11) and was the first to meet the risen Jesus. Henry had to spend time in silence and solitude with the Lord before she could set down what she had been carrying. Busyness had been one way to avoid that grief.
Fields names the same pattern. She says most people have control issues, that “we wanna control every aspect of our lives,” and that “it keeps us stressed.” She points to a message she says weighs on many Black women in particular, the sense that nobody is coming to save us, which makes stopping feel dangerous. Her own test came during a six-week recovery from surgery, with a deadline looming for the largest grant her organization had been invited to pursue. She told God she was releasing it, explained her situation to the foundation, received more time and was awarded the grant after she recovered. Her lesson was that pushing through without trusting God would likely have hurt her further.
That story needs careful handling. John 15 promises fruit from abiding. It does not promise that every released deadline will be extended or every application approved. Fields’s account shows what trust looked like for her in one case. The text offers something sturdier: the vinedresser is at work whether or not a given outcome goes our way.
Henry adds a step that keeps trust grounded. When you release, she says, remember what the Lord has done. Recalling God’s past faithfulness is what lets a person lean back. This fits the chapter, where abiding rests on a love already given: “As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love” (John 15:9). Trust grows from what God has already shown himself to be.
Doesn’t Scripture Condemn Laziness?
It does, and this is the strongest objection to any teaching on rest. Paul tells the Thessalonians, “For even when we were with you, this we commanded you, that if any would not work, neither should he eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). Proverbs repeatedly warns the sluggard to learn from the ant. A reading of John 15 that cancelled these texts would be a bad reading.
John 15 answers a different question. Paul and Proverbs ask whether you will work. John 15 asks where your life and fruit come from. A person can work hard as a branch connected to the vine, or as a branch trying to be its own root. Proverbs, as wisdom literature, gives sound general principles about diligence. It leaves the anxious worker’s deeper question for passages like this one.
Henry draws the line herself: “I think what he’s calling us to do is to do what we can and trust him with the rest.” The phrase “what we can” assumes real work, real limits and a God who fills what we cannot. In her case that meant giving her four children and her household their due instead of spending every waking hour promoting a book. As she puts it, “God does not want us to be burnt out.”
Henry also recalls Jesus’s words about his yoke:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28–30).
A yoke is farm equipment, worn to pull a load. Jesus offers rest to the weary and, in the same breath, a yoke. The rest he promises is work done under him, at his pace, with a burden he calls light.
So laziness and hustle fail in mirror-image ways. The lazy person declines the work that belongs to them. The hustler keeps carrying work that belongs to God. Each is a failure of trust, one in God’s command and the other in God’s care.
A Rhythm, Kept by Returning
Henry adds a fourth word to her title: repeat. People naturally pick things back up, and she does not think anyone perfects the rhythm. She thinks it becomes easier with practice.
The grammar of John 15 agrees. Abiding is ongoing. Jesus tells his disciples to stay, and he warns that they will be pruned along the way. Returning again and again is what remaining looks like for people who keep reaching for control.
That makes a useful test of which one is driving you. If stopping feels unbearable, ask what you would have to face, or entrust to God, if you stopped. Jesus spoke these words on the night his disciples’ world was about to fall apart, and he placed their future in the Father’s hands. The vine holds the branch. That is why the branch can rest.
