The image most people picture when they hear the name Jesus, a light-skinned man with long, flowing, sometimes fair hair, is not an ancient portrait handed down from the first century. According to church historian Dr. Ryan Reeves, the deliberately white Jesus is a modern product, “very much 20th century.” Earlier Christian artists often painted Jesus to look like the people around them. Reeves argues that this differs from the 20th-century image, which made Jesus white on purpose and tied him to a gospel of health and success.
The first piece of evidence is an absence. The Gospels never describe Jesus’s face, skin, hair or eyes. Whatever any painting shows, it is not copying a biblical description, because there is none to copy.
What Would Have to Be True for the White Jesus to Be Traditional?
Many people, believers and skeptics alike, take the pale, European-looking Jesus to be the traditional Christian picture of him. Some conclude from it that Christianity has always been a white religion that cast its God in its own image. Art is one of the main things that keeps that idea alive.
If the assumption were true, we would expect two things. The white image would appear early and stay constant. And the artists who produced it would have been trying, consciously, to say something about Jesus’s race. If the assumption is false, we would expect the image to vary over time, to carry other purposes and to harden into its familiar form only later, for identifiable reasons.
The historical baseline is clear enough. Reeves describes the first Christians as Semitic people who converted everyone else. Jesus was a first-century Jewish man from the eastern Mediterranean. Every portrait after that is interpretation.
Did Medieval Artists Make Jesus White?
Here Reeves is more careful than either side of the argument usually is. He does not deny that older European art often shows Jesus lighter than he would have been. Looking at a medieval crucifixion scene, he asks whether Jesus might have a lighter complexion than a Semitic man, and answers his own question: maybe, probably.
He concedes the observation and then questions what it means. Painters working in medieval Europe, he says, were painting in a way that looked like them, but “they’re not self-consciously saying, Jesus is me.” In his account, “They’re just painting a human figure as they’ve studied it.” An artist who had mostly seen people of one appearance drew the human body from what he knew.
Reeves points to what these works actually draw the eye toward. A medieval crucifixion is usually gory. It shows the blood, the nails in the hands and feet and the people around the cross weeping and reaching for him. In his words, “What the artist is trying to do is not say, Hey, look at white Jesus, but look at the suffering.” The skin tone is incidental. The wounds are the subject.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, states the underlying principle simply: in a sense, “art depicts life.” Someone who has never been connected to, or seen, a person who looks different will paint Jesus the way they see him. That describes a limit of experience. A theology of race would require something more.
Reeves adds context that strengthens this reading, though it is his historical judgment and not something the paintings prove on their own. He argues that talk about the superiority of certain races over others entered the bloodstream after the Enlightenment, alongside the African slave trade, and that people in the Middle Ages did not talk that way. If he is right, a medieval painter lacked the very category of white as a racial claim that a modern viewer projects back onto the canvas.
Reeves also says plainly that the older art may have missed the actual historical Jesus: “So it’s not perfect. It’s not great, but it’s different than what you see in the 20th century where it is making him white.”
Where Did the 20th-Century White Jesus Come From?
This is the center of Reeves’s argument, and here he becomes specific. He links the deliberate image to a shift inside American Christianity, especially among evangelicals: health and prosperity language coming into the church, along with the idea that Jesus is the great example of the good life.
He offers two markers. The first is a book from the 1940s that, as Reeves describes it, presented Jesus as the best CEO, with long, beautiful hair, toned bronze skin and a muscular build. The point was to make him attractive, and through him to tell readers that they too should “be healthy, wealthy, and wise.” The portrait served a message about success.
The second is a famous painting he places in the 1950s or 1960s, showing Jesus gazing upward toward the sky. Reeves says the figure is a white man with long brown or possibly blondish hair, and that the image “went viral metaphorically before the internet.” It was reproduced so widely that for many households it simply became what Jesus looked like.
Reeves’s diagnosis of what changed is the sharpest sentence in his account: “Some of that art in the 20th century in particular capitulated, this idea that Jesus is like us in every way, not we have to become like him in every way.” Older art pointed the viewer toward the cross. This art pointed the viewer toward an ideal self. He describes the result directly: “It’s purposely making him look like, if you’re not like this, you’re not in.”
How Much of This Is Established?
Less than the confident version of the story suggests. Reeves names neither the 1940s book nor the mid-century painting. He hedges on the painting’s decade and on the hair color, and says he cannot remember. What the record shows is that a trained church historian, speaking from memory, holds this view. It does not supply the documents, reproduction histories or studies that would let a reader check it.
That matters most for the causal claim. The idea that prosperity preaching produced or spread the modern white image is Reeves’s interpretation of the history. It is a plausible one from someone who teaches the subject, and it fits the two examples he gives. It is not, on this evidence, an established finding. A reader can fairly say that one historian traces the image to success-oriented evangelical culture. A reader cannot yet say the case has been proven.
The strongest objection goes further. If every culture paints Jesus in its own likeness, why single out the 20th-century version? Isn’t it the medieval habit carried forward with better printing presses?
Reeves’s answer rests on intent, and he states the test directly: the basic question is what the artist is trying to say. Is the image saying that every people can identify with Jesus? Or is it saying that one appearance is the ideal, and others fall short? Fields draws the same line. Painting Jesus as you see him is one thing, she says. Doing it intentionally could be used to oppress another people group.
Intent, though, is not always readable from a canvas. Two paintings with the same pale figure can carry different purposes, and a viewer may receive the second message even when an artist intended the first. Reeves’s argument does not claim that every light-skinned Jesus before 1900 was innocent and every one after was calculated. It claims that the dominant modern image was shaped by a recognizable theology of success, and that this differs in kind from art built around suffering. Readers can weigh that claim while staying cautious about any single painting.
Would a Black or Brown Jesus Correct It?
Reeves records how the pushback came. People in non-majority cultures asked a fair question: if Jesus can look like the people painting him, why not paint him as an African American, an Asian or a Hispanic person? That art arose, and Reeves treats its basic impulse as legitimate. If the goal is to say that Jesus can be identified with, then different skin tones follow naturally.
He also names the danger that applies to every version, including well-meant ones. Trying to make Jesus look like us in any way “can always be a challenge,” he says, because “it makes Jesus tame.” The control shifts to the painter: “And he doesn’t really challenge us because he just looks like the ideal version of what we think we are.” The problem he identifies is the habit of making Jesus a mirror, whatever color the mirror shows.
Here Reeves draws on an older Protestant instinct. Some Reformed believers, some Anglicans and others, he explains, prefer no depictions of Jesus at all. They read the second commandment as forbidding it:
“Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image” (Exodus 20:4).
Some of these Christians will even leave the baby out of a Christmas manger scene. The question they wrestle with, Reeves adds, is whether the incarnation changes how that commandment applies. Faithful Christians answer that question differently, and Reeves does not settle it.
He does explain the reasoning behind their caution. Reeves recalls the reformer’s warning: “Calvin in the 16th century said, you know, our hearts are factories for idols.” On that reading, people manufacture their own idols, the way a parent can make an idol of a child. Faced with rival portraits, each side insisting Jesus looks like them, some believers say to stop painting and talk about “the Jesus of the Scriptures,” a Jesus no one can tame or put on a canvas. Reeves stops short of endorsing the position fully: “Whether or not that’s the answer, I don’t know.” But he adds that “it’s at least good medicine sometimes for the problem.”
That restraint matches the biblical record. Of the suffering servant, Isaiah writes:
“He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him” (Isaiah 53:2).
Christians have long read this passage as pointing to Jesus. It is Hebrew poetry about the servant’s lowliness, and it tells no one his complexion. What it does is cut against a portrait built to be attractive and aspirational. Scripture also describes a change running in one direction. Believers “are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Corinthians 3:18). The 1940s success portrait, as Reeves describes it, reversed that direction and remade Jesus in the image of his admirers.
Why Does a Painting Carry This Much Weight?
When Reeves was growing up, he says, not being racist meant not telling certain jokes, not using slurs and being nice to people. Over the past two decades, he argues, white evangelicals have begun to hear that racism runs deeper: “It’s symbols.” It is what people see and what they come to expect.
He applies this to someone who walks into a church looking or acting differently, dressing differently or wanting different music. A congregation can tell itself it is not racist because it avoids certain words, while still requiring newcomers to be “exactly like us to really be accepted.” Reeves names that pattern without softening it: “That’s a soft form of racism.” Then he links it back to the canvas: “And that’s what the art triggers.” A person looking at the familiar picture of Jesus can hear, without anyone saying it, that they could never be like that.
So the familiar portrait proves less than people assume and says more than its painters may have meant. It offers no evidence about first-century Galilee, since no one painting it had any. On Reeves’s account it is evidence about 20th-century American church culture and what that culture wanted Jesus to endorse. A church that frames it over the pulpit is still making a claim with it every Sunday about what the ideal believer looks like.
