A Humble Hermeneutics conversation on Judges 19, self-made justice and the God who refuses to bury what we would rather hide.

A phrase runs through the book of Judges like a refrain:
“In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6).
By the time you reach chapter 19, you have seen what that phrase produces: Jephthah’s rash vow, Samson’s broken promises and an entire nation circling the same drain. And then comes the chapter most preachers skip.
Judges 19 is not a passage that builds toward a lesson. It is a passage that forces a reckoning. A woman is handed over to a mob, assaulted through the night and found at dawn with her hands upon the threshold. Her husband tells her to get up so they can go. She does not answer. She is dead. Then he does something that is still argued about: he cuts her body into twelve pieces and sends them throughout Israel, and the whole nation is made to look at what has been done.
Yana Conner and Dr. Cynthia James, co-hosts of Humble Hermeneutics, sat with this chapter alongside Lisa Fields, founder and president of the Jude 3 Project, and did not look away. What they found was not just horror. It was a mirror.
What Self-Made Justice Actually Produces
Fields reads the whole book of Judges through its own refrain. Everyone doing what is right in their own eyes is not a statement about freedom. It is a description of collapse. When self becomes the standard of right and wrong, you do not get individuals flourishing. You get a justice that has lost its shape.
Fields puts it plainly: “When we pursue our own truths and our own righteousness outside of God’s standard, we end up pursuing a justice that is distorted.” The word distorted is precise. Distorted justice is not simply wrong. It is recognizable enough to feel right. The Levite in Judges 19 believed he was the wronged party. The men of Gibeah believed they were within their rights. Everyone in the story was operating from their own sense of what was fair, and a woman died at a threshold.
The power of this chapter is that the Bible does not let you read it comfortably from the outside. You cannot be a mere observer. Every character in the story had a hand in what happened, or a chance to stop it, or a choice to look away. That is the nature of distorted justice: it does not only happen to people. It happens through people.
The Dodge That Is Harder to See Than the Sin
The most chilling moment in the chapter is not the violence. It is what comes after. The Levite sends the woman’s body through Israel in pieces, and when the tribes gather, he tells the story as though the outrage had been done only to him (Judges 20:4–7). Fields catches it immediately:
“He cuts her up and then says, look what y’all have done. And my thought is, no, look what you’ve done.”
— Lisa Fields
He was not an innocent bystander. He took hold of her and put her out the door (Judges 19:25). He called for her the next morning like a man who had somewhere to be. He made his choices at every point in the story, and then he recast himself as the victim when it was time to report what happened. That is the logic of “right in your own eyes.” It does not just distort what you do to others. It distorts how you tell the story afterward. You can be central to someone else’s harm and still write yourself out of the account.
Conner draws the implication out for the reader directly: “It’s very easy for us to point fingers at other people and not consider how we partner with those things.” This is not comfortable. It is meant to be uncomfortable. That discomfort is what the text is for.
The Woman the Story Refuses to Forget
James brings the scholarship the passage demands. She lingers where the text does: on the unnamed woman. The woman had already acted with agency in a world that gave her almost none. She had left the Levite and returned to her father’s house. Then came the journey that ended in Gibeah.
James reads the woman’s final gesture carefully: “She leaves this house trying to get home. She is brought back to a house that’s not a home. She is on the doorstep, as a reminder: I’m the one you threw away.” The detail of her hands upon the threshold is not just pathos. It is the Bible refusing to let her disappear. She has no voice in the story after this point and no name anywhere in it, yet the text records her position, her posture and her outstretched hands. Scripture gives her the dignity the people in the story stripped away.
Scholars who study what Phyllis Trible called “texts of terror” make the same hermeneutical point: these passages have to be read from the vantage point of the victim, not the powerful. When the church skips chapters like this one, it signals to every survivor in the room that their pain is too much for God’s word. The silence is not neutral. It is a message.
Why God Put This in the Bible
This is the question the panel keeps returning to. Why include it? Why write it at this level of detail? Conner finds her answer in the chapter’s final verse. Judges 19 does not end with a funeral and everyone moving on. It ends with three commands:
“There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds” (Judges 19:30).
And chapter 20 shows the community actually responding, holding someone accountable and refusing to cover over what happened.
Conner says, “To see that kind of accountability in the Bible, to see justice enacted, gave me hope. It gives me a picture of the kind of God we serve, who doesn’t just brush these incidents under the rug.”
That is the interpretive key. The chapter is not in the Bible because God approves of what happened. It is there because God will not pretend it did not happen. The same Scripture that records the horror issues a command: do not go silent about this. Think. Talk. Speak. Then the story keeps going, showing what happens when a community actually obeys that command.
Dr. Jo Vitale, who has taught on the book of Judges, notes that the entire book is structured around its own recurring indictment: look what happens when people do whatever they want. Judges is not a celebration of its characters. It is a warning carried through one broken story after another, each showing the same collapse in a different key. Judges 19 is where the refrain finally lands at full weight.
The Hardest Application
It is easy to read Judges 19 and locate yourself far from Gibeah. Conner’s point is that the text does not let you stay there. It is not asking you to condemn an obvious evil from a distance. It is asking where you have partnered with it, tolerated it, stayed quiet about it or written yourself out of the story while still being in it.
That question is not rhetorical. The chapter ends with a mandate to speak, and Fields reads that as the call. The Bible told the truth here, recorded it without flinching, preserved the woman’s outstretched hands and then commanded the community not to bury it. The same God who hates what happened in Judges 19 is the God who included it. He did not look away. Neither should we.
Quick Answers
What does “every man did that which was right in his own eyes” mean? The repeated refrain of Judges describes a society where self is the measure of right and wrong, with no shared standard, and it shows through story after story where that leads.
Why is it dangerous? Because self-made justice is distorted justice. People excuse their own part in harm, blame others and strip the vulnerable of dignity, as Judges 19 shows in full.
Why would God include a story this dark? The panel reads it as the Bible telling the truth rather than burying evil. The chapter ends with a command to respond, not a command to move on.
What are the three commands at the end of Judges 19? Consider it, take advice and speak your minds. The horror is meant to produce a response, not silence.
Is there hope in this passage? Yes, soberly. The next chapter shows the community refusing to cover it over, which is what accountability under God looks like.
