The church needs apologetics because the New Testament assigns the task of answering to ordinary believers, not to a specialist class. When Peter tells Christians to be ready to give a reason for their hope, he writes to scattered, powerless congregations and expects outsiders to start the conversation. Pastor Chris Brooks argues that any church living on mission will meet those questions sooner or later. On that reading, apologetics is the readiness that obedience itself requires, and not an elective for the bookish few. The verse everyone cites is the place to test that claim.
What Does 1 Peter 3:15 Actually Ask For?
The verse reads:
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” (1 Peter 3:15)
The sentence is shorter than its reputation, and its details limit what can be drawn from it.
The question comes from the other side. Peter does not tell believers to go out and win arguments. He tells them to be ready for “every man that asketh.” The verse assumes Christians will be asked, and asked often enough that readiness has to be a settled habit rather than an occasional effort.
What people ask about is “the hope that is in you.” That much the text states plainly. Brooks goes a step further and proposes a reading of the scene behind it: “Peter anticipates that people are gonna be like, man, why are you so hopeful?” He presses the point when he says that “our disposition was what always caused people to say, there’s something different about these people.” This is his interpretation, not a statement in the verse, but it fits the grammar well. The hope is something “in you” that others can notice and ask about. Doctrine is still involved, since a reason has content. The occasion for giving it, though, is a life that observers cannot explain.
The word “answer” also deserves attention. Other translations render it as “defense.” The underlying Greek word, apologia, is where the English word “apologetics” comes from. It could describe a formal reply before a court, and it could describe an explanation offered to anyone who asks. Peter’s phrase “every man that asketh” points toward the everyday sense, though some interpreters think the threat of official accusation hangs over the whole section. Either way, the word names an account given on request, not a lecture delivered unprompted.
The manner matters as much as the content: “with meekness and fear.” The next verse adds a good conscience, so that those who “speak evil of you” may be “ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ” (1 Peter 3:16). In KJV English, conversation means conduct, the whole way a person lives. The answer Peter wants is tied to character. A believer who argues well and behaves badly has not obeyed this verse.
Who Was Peter Writing To?
The letter opens by addressing “the strangers scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia” (1 Peter 1:1). These were small Christian communities spread across what is now Turkey, living as outsiders. Brooks describes them as believers who “don’t have power, and don’t have political voice.” Just before verse 15, Peter writes:
“But and if ye suffer for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their terror, neither be troubled.” (1 Peter 3:14)
The audience of verse 15 can be traced through the paragraph. The section begins in verse 8 with “be ye all of one mind” (1 Peter 3:8), turning from instructions for particular groups, such as servants, wives and husbands, to the whole church. The “ye” who suffer in verse 14 and the “you” who must be ready in verse 15 belong to that same address. Nothing in the passage narrows the instruction to elders or teachers. The command to be ready goes to the same pressured, ordinary people who are told not to fear.
Does “Royal Priesthood” Make Everyone Responsible?
Brooks links this readiness to an earlier verse. Describing the shift from specialists to every believer, he says “that’s what Peter wanted,” pointing to Peter’s teaching on the priesthood of all believers in 1 Peter 2:9:
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
Every title in that list is collective. The purpose clause applies to the whole people: they exist to make God’s work known.
The link is Brooks’s synthesis, and it has a limit. First Peter 2:9 is about declaring God’s praises, not specifically about answering objections. On its own it does not prove that every Christian must study apologetics. What it does establish is that making God known belongs to the entire community. First Peter 3:15 then names one concrete form that vocation takes when outsiders respond with questions. Read together, the two verses support Brooks’s point without stretching either one.
What One Summer of Door Knocking Revealed
Brooks offers a case that matches the order of events Peter assumes. Around 2008, his church decided to spend a summer visiting 1,500 homes in its community, praying with neighbors and looking for openings for the gospel. Brooks says the effort produced many fruitful conversations. It also produced questions. Members came back to their young pastor asking what a Five Percenter was, how to answer someone who doubted that Jesus rose from the dead, how to explain belief in miracles, and how to respond to Mormons and Jehovah’s Witnesses knocking on the same doors.
Brooks remembers thinking, “there needs to be somebody that’s answering these questions.” He then discovered, in his words, “a whole field of somebodies called apologists.”
Nobody in that congregation set out to become an apologist. They set out to obey the Great Commission, and the questions arrived as a direct result. Believers spoke as Christians in public, and people asked. Brooks draws the conclusion plainly: “the scriptures command us to spread the gospel. And when you do, you’re gonna encounter questions and you need to know how to respond to those.”
This is why Brooks treats apologetics as part of the church’s identity rather than a side program. He names four marks that classically separate a church from a social group: preaching the gospel, administering the ordinances, spiritual leadership by elders, and living on mission together. Of a congregation that is not on mission, he says “it might be a lot of things, but it ain’t a church.” The argument runs in a chain. A church on mission will be questioned, and a church that is questioned has been told by Peter to be ready.
Why an Unanswered Question Is Not Neutral
Brooks puts the stakes this way: “whenever people ask questions about the gospel, and we don’t give them an answer, they assume it’s because there is no answer.” He is careful about where the problem lies. He insists “the gospel’s not deficient,” and adds, “The gospel can answer any question, but a lot of times we’re anemic in our ability to be able to answer the questions of the heart and the head.”
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, describes a person who became an atheist after his pastor could not answer any of his questions, and who took that silence as proof that answers did not exist. Her response is that “just because you didn’t receive the answer you were looking for, that doesn’t mean the answer doesn’t exist.” Brooks wants pastors to say exactly that to their people, promising to try their best and asking members, “don’t let us hinder your faith.” That posture is Peter’s “meekness and fear” applied to leaders. Readiness does not mean pretending to know everything. It means pursuing every question honestly and refusing to let one person’s limits pass for the limits of the truth.
What About Contending for the Faith?
A second passage often comes up in this discussion:
“Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.” (Jude 3)
Jude’s setting differs from Peter’s. Peter has questioning outsiders in view. Jude is alarmed by false teachers who have slipped into the church and are distorting grace, as the next verse explains. Contending in Jude is mainly about guarding the faith from distortion inside the community. It would claim too much to treat Jude 3 as a second version of 1 Peter 3:15.
Still, the two letters agree on the point that matters here. Jude speaks of a “common salvation” and of a faith delivered “unto the saints,” a New Testament term for all believers, not a holy elite. He then exhorts the whole congregation to contend. Peter and Jude face different threats, but both place the duty on the whole church.
Isn’t This Really a Job for Specialists?
The strongest objection deserves a fair hearing. The New Testament recognizes particular gifts, including teaching, and it warns that not many should become teachers. Some believers are far better suited than others to study philosophy, history or textual evidence. Asking every Christian to do apologetics could seem to ignore those differences and invite bad answers.
The objection is right about gifts, and Brooks does not deny it. His summary line holds both truths together: “every apologist needs a church, and every church needs an apologist.” Specialists matter. His members needed someone who had studied Five Percenter teaching and the evidence for the resurrection, and Brooks himself found that field only because the questions pushed him toward it.
But 1 Peter 3:15 does not ask every believer to become a specialist. It asks every believer to be ready to explain their own hope. That is a more modest demand. A new Christian may not be able to answer every challenge to the reliability of the New Testament. She can still say why she hopes, what she believes about Jesus, and where she would go to learn more. The church’s task is to make sure every member can do the first and knows where to turn for the second.
Brooks describes the historical shift as a move “from the classroom to the corner.” Older apologetics, he says, lived mostly in seminary courses open to people who could get in, afford it and enjoyed dense academic books. The texts never limited the calling that way. Moving apologetics to the corner does not abolish the classroom. It means the classroom exists to serve people standing on corners and doorsteps.
What Follows for an Ordinary Congregation
If this reading is sound, equipping members to answer questions belongs inside ordinary discipleship, alongside prayer and Bible reading. It cannot be handed off entirely to authors and podcasts. Leaders should also expect the questions to change. Brooks observes that “most of the questions aren’t as much evidential as they are ethical,” questions about whether God is good and whether Christianity is good for the world. Peter’s suffering, scattered readers would have understood that kind of question well.
The most searching implication is also the simplest. Peter assumed his readers would be asked about their hope. Brooks’s members were asked within weeks of knocking on doors. Their questions were evidence that they had gone out and that their lives had been noticed. A congregation that is never asked anything might wonder whether anyone outside has had a reason to ask.
Quick Answers
Where does readiness start, according to the verse? Before any answer, Peter says “sanctify the Lord God in your hearts” (1 Peter 3:15). Readiness begins with settling who is Lord, and only then turns to what to say.
Is the reason for hope only an argument? Not for Brooks. He says that for the atheist, hope sits at the fringes, while for the believer it is at the core. A defense of hope includes showing a hope that holds under pressure.
What ethical questions should members be ready for? Brooks lists whether Christianity is racist, sexist or oppressive, and what it has to say to the abused, the neglected and the overlooked.
How can a church practice this outside a classroom? Brooks and his team visit university campuses at least twice a month for question-and-answer events where students bring whatever they are wrestling with.
