Standard apologetics misses much of the city, not because its arguments are weak but because of where it was written from. Pastor Chris Brooks, who pastors Evangel Ministries in Detroit and wrote Urban Apologetics, names the problem plainly: every author writes from a particular set of experiences, and very few of the field’s books were written from the inner city. An apologetic built for the city has to answer the religious movements, ethical pressures and justice questions people there actually raise, while keeping the same gospel.
Brooks makes this diagnosis without bitterness. As he puts it, “At no fault of their own, much of the writings weren’t particularized to the urban context.” He is describing how a discipline drifts toward whatever its writers know best, and he accuses no one of hostility. If the people writing the books, speaking at the conferences and teaching in the seminaries mostly live and minister in one kind of place, the field will treat that place’s questions as everyone’s questions.
How Does a Field End Up With a Suburban Default?
Nobody has to decide that city questions are unimportant for them to end up treated that way. Brooks describes a quieter mechanism. Minority Christians often feel they must research and discuss only the issues the majority culture considers important, as though “if an issue only affects ethnic minorities, that somehow it’s not deemed as important.” The result is a quest for validation. Gifted urban thinkers spend their energy proving they can handle the standard debates, and the questions their own neighbors are asking go unwritten.
That claim goes further than saying the field lacks diversity. It means the gap feeds itself. If the questions that matter in Detroit are never treated as serious scholarship, the people best placed to address them get pushed toward other topics. The next generation then inherits a library that still has nothing to say about their block. Brooks’s answer is to insist that these concerns are “important enough to write and important enough to research on and to have conferences around.”
The default shows up first in whose voices get read. Brooks wrote his book to cite minority scholars (Latino, African American and Asian, men and women) so readers would know such thinkers exist, and he names theologians such as Bruce Fields and Anthony Bradley as people who deserve a wider hearing. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, added her own experience: she did not recall reading an African American author in her seminary training. She put that down to a lack of exposure in evangelical seminaries rather than a fault of her professors. A reading list sets the agenda long before a sermon does.
Hasn’t the Black Church Been Doing Apologetics All Along?
Brooks says yes, and this may be the most useful correction in his whole case. The answer depends on how you define the word. Define apologetics “simply as what takes place in the classroom,” and the Black church looks absent, because of a long historical distance between the academy and the Black church. Define it as Brooks does, “answering the objections that culture has against the faith,” and the picture changes: “African Americans have been doing apologetics as long as the church has been doing apologetics.”
So the urban church was never empty of defenders of the faith. It defended the faith in pulpits, in songs and in everyday argument, in forms the academy did not count. Brooks points to Christian hip-hop artists such as Lecrae and Trip Lee, along with spoken word artists, as people who have defended the faith well at a popular level. What is new is the academy recognizing credible voices that were already there.
His definition also fits the way Scripture frames the task. Peter writes to believers facing hostility:
“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear” (1 Peter 3:15).
The verse places the starting point with the person who asks. The defense answers a question someone has actually put to you. An apologetic shaped mostly by a seminar’s list of objections can drift away from that pattern without anyone noticing.
Which Objections Are Actually on the Block?
Brooks sorts the challenges facing Christianity in the inner city into three groups: “the ethical challenges, the religious objections, and then the social justice questions.” Each needs to be addressed specifically and from a minority perspective.
The religious objections show the gap most clearly. In his book Brooks takes up movements that mainstream apologetics rarely writes about: Black Hebrew Israelites, the Moorish Science Temple, the Nation of Islam and the Five Percenters. These “are religions that we see on a regular basis in our own backyard.” A church that has trained people to answer only the textbook rivals will have nothing ready when a coworker or cousin brings one of these teachings into the conversation.
His Mormonism example makes the point without disrespect to anyone. He affirms that Mormon apologetics is needed and valuable. But “Mormonism is not a big issue in my neighborhood.” A strong, clear case against Mormonism delivered in inner-city Detroit, he says, “may be the right presentation and have the right answers and the right information and the right research, but I have not answered the right question.” The question on a listener’s heart may instead be “more of an Afro-centric Pan-African expression.”
Lisa Fields gave this a practical edge. Discussing a Pan-Africanist guest on a popular radio show aimed at younger listeners, she observed that movements like the Five Percenters and Hebrew Israelites are “actually winning over the African American community because they tackle those issues.” Her claim concerns presence more than argument. These groups show up to the questions of identity, history and injustice that people are already carrying. A church that skips those questions gives up the ground before the debate begins.
Brooks compresses the standard into one line: “It’s not enough for the church to answer questions rightly. We have to answer the right questions.” An answer has to be correct and also aimed at the question being asked.
Why Is Justice an Apologetics Question at All?
Many readers will accept the point about rival religions and still balk at justice. Isn’t justice a matter of activism, separate from defending the truth of Christianity? Brooks argues that in the city the two cannot be pulled apart, because silence itself makes an argument: “Whenever the church doesn’t give an answer to an issue, people assume it’s because we don’t have an answer.”
He applied this to the deaths of Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin and others filling the news, and to human sexuality as well. The question many young people were asking was whether the church had anything to say about these things at all. If it says nothing, people conclude that Christianity has nothing, and they look elsewhere. Brooks insists the shortage is never in the gospel: “The gospel answers the longings of the hearts of men. The challenge is, are we giving that answer?”
Lisa Fields described a historical version of the same pattern. She recalled a scholar’s account of the mid-1960s, which she summarized as young Black men coming to church without hearing enough about the issues they faced in the world, and turning to the Black liberation movement for answers. That is her reading of one scholar’s claim about a complex period, and readers should weigh it as an interpretation. The warning she drew from it stands either way. People with sound doctrine can lose a generation by offering, as she put it, “information that has nothing to do with what I’m dealing with outside of the four walls.”
Brooks also names the split inside the church that makes this hard. One camp is committed to righteousness, getting the gospel and ethics right. Another is committed to justice, treating people well in public life. He refuses the division: “The throne of God is established on righteousness and justice. Righteousness and justice kiss one another.”
His wording blends two psalms:
“Justice and judgment are the habitation of thy throne: mercy and truth shall go before thy face” (Psalm 89:14).
“Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other” (Psalm 85:10).
Both describe the character of God’s own rule, so they supply a theological point and no policy program: right standing before God and right treatment of people both belong to the foundation of his throne. A church cannot defend that God while treating half of his character as someone else’s concern.
Brooks keeps that point theological. His question is how Christians can stand in solidarity with people suffering public injustice “while still remaining distinctly and uniquely Christian.” Measuring justice by God’s character rather than by any party’s ideology, a line the Jude 3 Project also holds, lets a church engage the questions a movement raises without signing on to its program.
Doesn’t Tailoring the Defense Risk Changing the Faith?
This is the strongest objection, and it deserves a straight answer. If truth is the same everywhere, shouldn’t its defense be the same everywhere? And doesn’t sorting apologetics by neighborhood risk turning theology into a mirror of each audience’s preferences?
Brooks answers by drawing a firm line around what does not move. He names the basic tenets Christians must agree on:
- an almighty God who created heaven and earth and alone determines right and wrong;
- Scriptures that are God-breathed and true;
- Jesus Christ as Lord;
- one way of salvation, through what Scripture reveals about Christ.
He describes the task as communicating a timeless, unchanging gospel in relevant ways, following Jesus, who used illustrations his hearers could relate to. Contextualization changes the questions taken up and the illustrations used. The content defended stays fixed.
He also guards against a second danger: treating the city as one mind. Before describing urban challenges, he stops to say, “We’re not a monolithic group.” Minority communities have different issues, concerns and experiences. An urban apologetic that assumed every Black young adult in Detroit was weighing Hebrew Israelite claims would repeat the original mistake with a new stereotype.
Lisa Fields supplied the counterexample that keeps the argument honest. She described a friend who grew up in church and is becoming a skeptic. He is asking about the Epic of Gilgamesh and the origins of the Bible, and he can’t believe his Buddhist and Muslim friends are going to hell. Those are classical apologetics questions, and they come from inside the Black church, where young people want to talk about evolution, creation and where the Bible came from. Urban apologetics keeps the standard arguments and adds the questions the standard approach left out. It also stops assuming one kind of question belongs to one kind of person.
Where Does This Work Have to Live?
Brooks adds a condition that is easy to overlook: the work belongs inside the local church. “Every church needs an apologist,” he says, and every apologist needs a local church. He describes a mutual suspicion in which apologists and pastors each think the other is not doing the job well. His advice to anyone with a passion for apologetics is to go to their pastor and ask how that passion can serve the church’s mission to reach its community. In the city especially, the person best placed to answer the block’s questions is usually someone the block already knows.
The deepest point in his case concerns priorities more than geography. A defense of the faith shows what its defenders think is worth answering. When the field’s questions come only from one kind of place, everyone else learns that their questions do not count. Brooks argues that the gospel can bear the full weight of the city’s questions, and that the church proves it only by taking them up.
