Many Christians separate their faith from their bodies, minds, money and relationships because they have absorbed, usually without knowing it, a very old mistake: the idea that God cares about the spirit and the rest of a person is secondary. Coach BJ Thompson gives that mistake a name, Gnosticism. Scripture answers it with three facts: God created the physical world, the Son of God became flesh, and Jesus rose in a body. If God made all of you and redeems all of you, then all of you is yours to steward for him.
That answer has two parts, a diagnosis and a remedy. Both are easier to see one step at a time.
What Does the Split Actually Look Like?
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, describes the problem precisely. For a lot of believers, she says, “their spiritual growth to them is divorced from every other aspect of their lives.” The test of health becomes the morning quiet time. If that happened, the person counts themselves well, whatever is going on with their sleep, their temper or their closest relationships.
Thompson sees the same pattern from the other side. In his coaching work he meets people who invest deeply in one area of life and know almost nothing about the others. His sharpest example is believers who are filled with the Spirit and speak in tongues, and who also live with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Their devotion is real. The trouble, he says, is that “they don’t see the correlation of their faith and their habits.”
So compartmentalization usually comes with sincere faith. What it adds is a map of where that faith is allowed to apply. The person has drawn a border, and God is welcome on one side of it.
One picture helps here. Imagine a house where the owner lets God have one room. That room is clean and well lit. The rest of the house is managed on the owner’s own terms. The picture breaks down in an important way, though. Rooms in a house can be sealed off from each other. A person cannot. Fear lives in the body. Unhealed history shows up in a marriage. Exhaustion shapes how you pray. The border was never real, which is why the arrangement keeps failing.
Where Does the Habit Come From?
Thompson traces it to a teaching the early church had to confront. In his words, “Gnosticism is simply just a philosophy or a thought or worldview that says, because my spirit belongs to God, anything can happen to my body.”
The logic is simple once it is stated. If the spirit is the real you and the body is only a container, then what happens to the container does not finally matter. That premise can produce opposite behavior. One person concludes the body can be indulged, since it does not count. Another concludes it can be neglected, since it does not count. Both are running on the same assumption.
The New Testament pushes hard against the premise at its root. The first letter of John makes the bodily reality of Jesus a test of true teaching:
“Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God” (1 John 4:2).
A faith that is embarrassed by flesh has a problem with Jesus himself.
The letter of Jude shows how early the wider danger appeared. Jude urges believers to “earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints” (Jude 1:3), then warns about people “turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness” (Jude 1:4). Jude does not describe a doctrine of the body, and interpreters differ on who his opponents were. His warning simply illustrates the same pattern: spiritual claims kept apart from how a person actually lives.
Most Christians today would never sign a Gnostic creed. That is exactly why the habit survives. It lives on as an assumption nobody defends out loud. This is why Thompson frames the remedy as teaching: “Christians just need to be taught that that’s a very segmented way of living life.”
Why Does the Body Belong Inside the Faith?
The theological basis for whole-person stewardship rests on three things Scripture says about God and matter.
First, creation. Thompson starts here: God made everything. He points to a line people love to quote from Abraham Kuyper, that there is no square inch of the universe Jesus does not claim as his own. Then he notes how rarely people apply it to their own bodies, or to the principles that hold daily life in order. Genesis ends the creation account with a verdict on the physical world itself:
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good” (Genesis 1:31).
God made matter on purpose and called it good.
Second, the incarnation. “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14). The eternal Son took on a real human body and lived in it. Whatever God thinks of bodies, he thought enough of them to wear one.
Third, the resurrection. The Gospels insist that the risen Jesus had a body. In Luke he tells his frightened disciples:
“Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have” (Luke 24:39).
The body that was crucified is the body that was raised. Christian hope looks forward to the redemption of the body.
Put those three together and the Gnostic premise collapses. A God who creates bodies, takes one on and raises one is not indifferent to yours.
Paul draws the personal conclusion in 1 Corinthians:
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
Reading carefully matters here. Paul writes this in an argument about sexual immorality, and Thompson himself observes that when churches talk about the body, “it feels like we’re often only talking about abstinence and sexuality.” The passage’s direct subject is sexual conduct. Paul’s reason, though, is ownership: you are not your own, and both body and spirit are God’s. Applying that reason to sleep, food and stress extends the passage beyond its first meaning. It is a fair extension, because the logic Paul gives is not limited to one area.
What Does Stewardship Add?
Stewardship is the word that turns this theology into practice. A steward manages something that belongs to someone else. That posture rules out two errors at once: treating your life as your own, and ignoring it.
Thompson’s warning is that the Gnostic habit leaves you a “poor steward of yourself.” You cannot develop what you consider unimportant. The strength, awareness and capacity God placed in you go unused because you never treated them as significant.
His positive statement is worth reading whole:
“God is both the Lord over your soul and your spirit and your mind, and he’s really calling you into bringing all of these things into order, which is going to take discipline, which is going to take new habits, and which is going to ultimately lead us to a new sense of peace and awakening.”
— BJ Thompson
Two things in that sentence matter. The first is lordship over the whole person. The second is order. Thompson uses the biblical word shalom for this: peace as things set right. When something surfaces, a health scare or an old wound from childhood, he says you do not have to retreat into talk about a broken world or long for the Lord’s return as a way out. You can admit something is wrong and work to restore order where there is chaos.
This matches how Jesus states the greatest commandment:
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength” (Mark 12:30).
The command assumes a person comes as one.
Are Relationships Part of This Too?
Yes. Fields puts it directly: “Your relationship with God is only as good as your relationship with other people.” Her claim stays close to the plain sense of 1 John 4:20: “If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?”
Fields describes how this caught up with her. During a season of being more intentional in prayer, she asked God what in her needed to change. Five people came to mind, and the instruction was to go and make it right. Believers sometimes “mask these things by hyper-spiritualization,” she says, when faithfulness may mean going back to situations where you felt wronged and choosing to “be a peacemaker when you don’t want to be.” Jesus put the order of operations bluntly: “Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift” (Matthew 5:24). Worship and repair belong in the same room. Thompson’s word for the goal is leaning on others “as a necessity, not as a utility.”
Doesn’t the Spiritual Still Come First?
This is the most reasonable objection, and it deserves a careful answer. Scripture does rank things. Paul writes:
“For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come” (1 Timothy 4:8).
Jesus taught, “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man” (Matthew 15:11). Doesn’t that put the body in second place?
Read closely, these texts set priorities. They leave the body inside the life of faith. Paul says bodily exercise profits little, which in his argument means real but limited value next to godliness. And the godliness he prizes is “profitable unto all things,” which includes the body. Jesus, in Matthew 15, is addressing ritual purity and the heart. In the same Gospel he assumes his followers will practice a bodily discipline, saying “when ye fast” (Matthew 6:16). Thompson draws on exactly this: fasting builds structure and order around what we consume as an expression of love for God.
So the heart is primary, and it is the heart of a whole person. Putting godliness first is what drives a person to care for the rest.
A second misunderstanding runs the other way. Whole-person stewardship does not mean every illness is a moral failure or that good habits guarantee health. Bodies in a fallen world break down for reasons no one chose. The point is ownership of what is ours to tend, without guilt over what is not.
What Does Faith Look Like Once the Walls Come Down?
Thompson’s clearest line on this: “Too many times we want faith that is a substance of our intent, not the manifestation of us putting effort towards moving the ball forward.” Integrated faith moves.
That movement takes a particular kind of humility. Thompson insists, “It’s humility, not humiliation”: the honest admission that something is not working, followed by asking for help from people with what he calls proof of concept, meaning “the person who is giving the instruction has done in real life consistently the thing that you’re seeking to do.” Counselors and therapists are among those guides, and Fields adds that “a good therapist will tell you that the work really happens after the session.” Church works the same way. Instruction becomes change when you carry it into the week.
For people whose struggles were caused by someone else, Thompson offers a distinction from his own life. Writing about a frightening event from when he was five, he came to see how much of his life it had shaped. His conclusion: “It’s not my fault, but it is my responsibility.” Fault asks who caused the damage. Responsibility asks who will tend it now. Being free of blame still leaves you free to heal.
That is the real reversal. Compartmentalized faith keeps God where things are already orderly. Integrated faith brings him to the places that are not, the neglected body, the avoided conversation, the old fear, because those belong to him too.
