Sistar Outspoken did not leave the church because she stopped believing in God. She left after years of bringing real questions and real grief to people who either changed the subject or told her she was the problem. African spirituality reached her at the exact points where her church had gone quiet. Her story does not prove the church was wrong about God. It shows how a church can lose a committed member by dismissing her long before any rival belief system makes its case.
That distinction matters, because the usual explanations for leaving do not fit her. She was not a nominal member drifting away. She describes herself as having been “a hardcore Christian. My whole family worked in a church.” She sang in the choir at the AME congregation where her parents and grandparents worshiped. She ushered. Later, at another church, she served as a stewardess. In high school she carried a Bible in her backpack, and she says plainly, “But that was my foundation.”
What Did She Actually Leave Behind?
Listen to how she talks about the faith now, years after walking out. She does not sneer at it. “Even now I don’t disrespect Christianity in a sense because I know it works. And I know truth still lives there, but I found something that worked better for me.”
Plenty of Christians will hear the phrase “worked better for me” and wince, and the wince is fair. Truth is not a product you choose by fit. But before arguing with her conclusion, notice what she leaves out. She never says the Bible is a lie or that Jesus never mattered. She says her experience of church never made room for what she was carrying. Her departure was about a place before it was about a creed, and it happened in three moments: questions that got deflected, a public rebuke at the altar and a grief that people would not sit inside with her.
What Happens to a Question Nobody Answers?
Her first questions were ordinary ones. She noticed that the pictures of Jesus in her church did not match what she read. Where was the hair like wool? Where was the olive skin? She asked about his name, pointing out that the letter J did not exist in Jesus’s lifetime. She asked about Genesis 1:26. “So I wanted to know who is us?”
She describes the response simply: “So I’m asking these questions and I’m not getting answers.” When people did respond, she says they would “kind of turn the question into something else.” So she went looking on her own, and what she found was largely hostile to the faith. She makes a revealing observation about that. Those negative findings, she says, might not have become the main thing she knew if people had been able to answer her questions in the first place.
That is the first lesson of her story. A question does not disappear when the church refuses it. It goes somewhere else for an answer, and whoever answers it first gets to shape the person asking.
Her questions deserved a patient hearing. On the pictures, her instinct was sound: the pale Jesus on the church wall was not drawn from Scripture, and saying so would have honored her question. Genesis 1:26 was a good reading question too. The verse says, “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.” Christians have read the plural in several ways, including a hint of the Trinity, God addressing a heavenly court or a plural of majesty. The next verse adds its own weight: “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Genesis 1:27). The text holds the plural and the singular side by side, and someone could have explored that with her.
What stung was the double standard. She was being taught that African spiritual systems with many gods or entities were simply evil, while no one would explain the plural in her own Bible. To her, that silence looked like the church had no answer.
Why Did One Altar Call Matter So Much?
The turning point she names was not an argument. She was going through a hard season and kept coming forward at the altar call week after week. “I was going up there and I was crying, I was praying, and the preacher said, if you come up here every week and you still crying, you not doing what you’re supposed to do in the rest of the week.”
Her reaction was immediate: “No, he did not just judge me like that without asking me what I’m going through.” Her objection is to a verdict delivered without a single question. He treated her tears as evidence against her.
Scripture handles tears very differently. The psalmist prays:
“Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” (Psalm 56:8).
God keeps count of tears and treats them as worth remembering. Paul tells the church to “weep with them that weep” (Romans 12:15), which means the people around a grieving person are supposed to enter the grief, not grade it.
After that moment she wanted something specific. She said she needed to be part of something where she would not feel judged and where “we can move as a village.” That word carries weight in her story. She wanted people who would grow alongside her.
What Did Grief Open, and Why Did the Church Close It?
Then her boyfriend was killed. In the season that followed she could not work and lost nearly everything. She ended up living with a friend, fasting almost by accident and then changing how she ate. She describes that time with a striking line: “It was the strongest that I’ve ever felt in the weakest moment of my life.”
During that time she began having experiences she could not explain. She says she saw and heard things. She had what she calls visitation dreams, in which the dead spoke to her, including her boyfriend. She believed she received warnings about people who later became ill or died. At first she thought she was losing her mind. Then she became convinced it was real.
So she went back to church to try to understand it. Here is what she met: “It’s mumbo jumbo. You’re crazy.” She adds, “And I felt a rejection in that way.” Some people did point her to stories in the Bible, but then, she says, they would “kind of brush it off and say, but only certain people can experience those things.” Others told her she was just grieving. Some of it landed as an accusation that she was trying to act prophetic. Her answer to that is plain and sad: “I’m not trying to be special.”
Look at what happened in that exchange. A grieving woman brought the strangest, most frightening part of her life to the people she trusted most, and they responded with labels. No one sat down with her the way Job’s friends first did:
“So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great” (Job 2:13).
Those friends later went wrong by explaining his suffering as his fault. Her church skipped the seven days and went straight to the explaining.
What Did the Center Give Her That the Church Withheld?
A friend invited her to a wellness event at a center for African spiritual science. She missed the event, looked the place up and went anyway. On her first visit, women were teaching. One of them, she says, did what no one at church had done: “She normalized my experiences.”
The teachers there gave her a story to place her experiences in. They taught that people in America who show certain spiritual sensitivities are often diagnosed with conditions like schizophrenia, when in ancestral cultures they would have been trained by spiritual specialists. She joined a dream class and still helps people interpret their dreams. Her summary of that first season is simple: “So right off the bat, I’m like, I’m at home.” And: “I feel normal here.”
She also explained the reasoning that sealed her choice. She learned a principle that truth is purest closest to its source and gets distorted as it passes from person to person. She cited a study counting tens of thousands of versions of Christianity worldwide. Next to that, a path that claimed to be closer to the source, and that welcomed her experiences, made the decision easy.
Was the Church Wrong to Draw Any Line at All?
Here is the strongest objection to reading her story only as a church failure. Some of what she experienced, and some of what she was taught, does run against Scripture. The Law of Moses forbids consulting the dead and seeking hidden knowledge through spirits (Deuteronomy 18:10–11). Honoring the memory of the dead is one thing. Seeking contact with them is another. A pastor who cared for her would still have had to say something hard.
That objection shows what she needed: a careful line, drawn by someone who took her seriously. She got ridicule. “You’re crazy” is a dismissal. Discernment takes the experience seriously enough to examine it. It asks what happened, listens to the whole thing, opens the Scriptures with the person and names the boundary out of love. The center won her trust partly because it was the first place to treat her experience as worth talking about.
There is a second line worth drawing, and it protects people. Grief can do real things to the mind and body. The church was wrong to wave her off as crazy. The teaching that psychiatric diagnoses are mostly misread spiritual gifts is also dangerous, because it can steer someone who needs a doctor away from one. A grieving person deserves qualified care and prayerful company together, with neither one standing in for the other.
Her principle about truth and its source deserves a fair hearing as well. Taken seriously, it points toward the earliest written witness to Jesus, which is the collection of documents her church kept on the pulpit. The question worth asking is which claims about God can be traced back to the source and tested there. And she was taught to fear African spirituality without ever being shown that Africa already had a deep Christian story of its own, reaching back to the Ethiopian official baptized in Acts 8.
What Would It Have Taken for Her to Stay?
No one can say she would have stayed if the church had done better. She made her choice with her eyes open. But her story makes the church’s part visible. She left through a series of small closings: a question redirected, a prayer turned into a public rebuke, a grief called madness. Each one could have gone differently without any loss of conviction. Ask the crying woman what she is carrying before saying anything about her week. Sit down with the grieving before explaining anything to them.
The center she found won her by listening first. A church that holds the truth has every reason to listen at least that well, and no excuse for letting someone else be the first to hear her.
