Wanting to stop and being able to stop are two different things, and addiction lives in the space between them. If you have prayed sincerely and still gone back, that does not prove your faith is fake or your desire is a lie. Dr. Nii Addy, a neuroscientist and professor at Yale University who studies the brain biology of addiction, depression and anxiety, explains that repeated use changes the brain itself. Freedom usually comes through prayer, honest community and trained help together, along with daily work.
That answer does not shrink your responsibility. It puts the responsibility where it can do some good. Many people carry a quiet verdict about themselves: if I really loved God, I would be free by now. Every relapse then becomes evidence in a trial they keep losing. The shame feels spiritual, yet it works against the things that help. Shame pushes people into hiding, and hiding is where addiction does best.
What Is Happening in the Brain When the Craving Wins?
Addy starts with dopamine, a brain chemical that helps cells communicate. It is closely tied to reward and pleasure, and also to expectation. Dopamine rises when you enjoy something, whether a favorite food or time with people you love. Social connection is itself a reward the brain registers.
Substances, and behaviors such as a sex addiction, use that same system at a far greater intensity. In Addy’s words, “They actually act on those same places in the brain, but in a much stronger way than, like, say, eating a food will.” Researchers call this supraphysiological: well beyond what the body’s ordinary processes produce. He describes studies in which drugs like amphetamine or heroin release much more dopamine than eating chocolate does.
The consequence bears directly on shame. When one source of reward is that loud, the quieter ones fade. Addy puts it this way: “And so those things become so strong that people start to seek those things out and not the other things that God’s already designed us that are naturally rewarding.” People often spend a long time chasing the high they felt the first time, and they cannot always get it back.
The pull you feel toward the thing you hate, then, involves more than a moral weakness that extra sincerity would cure. Your reward system has been trained, over and over, to rank one thing above everything else. A prayer tonight does not erase that training by tomorrow morning. Prayer still matters, and the training also has to be undone.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, offers a spiritual observation about how this often begins. She describes people who feel life has handed them heavy suffering and go looking for pleasure to balance the score. When ordinary faith feels flat and the pain feels unpaid, those pleasures can harden into what she calls, using a biblical word, strongholds. The addiction may be answering a real ache with the wrong medicine.
Isn’t Calling It a Brain Problem Just an Excuse?
This is the strongest objection, and many people in recovery raise it against themselves. Addy describes giving a talk on the brain science of addiction to a group that included residents of a recovery house. Many came in insisting their addiction was not an illness, since they had done it to themselves. Addy grants the point plainly: “You can’t become addicted to a substance if you never use in the first place.”
He also lays out what the science shows. Long-term use changes pathways in the brain, and craving is one place you can see it. People spend weeks in a recovery program, do well, and then return to the same neighborhood, the same friends and the same places. The brain responds to those surroundings the way it used to respond to the drug, and the craving surges.
Both things are true at once. Choices started the road, and the road has changed the person walking it. Holding only the first truth leads to contempt. Holding only the second leads to helplessness. A person who holds both can say: I am responsible, so I will get the kind of help that matches what this has become.
Scripture knows this experience. Paul writes:
“For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I” (Romans 7:15).
The word allow carries the older sense of understand or approve. Christians read this chapter in different ways. Many take Paul to be describing the believer’s ongoing fight with sin. Others think he is describing life under the law without the Spirit’s power. The passage says nothing about neuroscience and should not be stretched into it. It does show that the gap between wanting and doing belongs to the honest biblical account of human beings. Feeling that gap does not place anyone beyond God’s reach.
If God Delivered Me, Why Did I Go Back?
This question wounds many people in church. Someone testifies to deliverance from an addiction, returns to it years later, and others start asking whether the deliverance was ever real. Fields, who comes from a Pentecostal background, put that question to Addy directly.
He does not answer by doubting God. “So God definitely does deliver people from addiction.” We often cannot say how God did it, whether through other people, through his direct action or through changes in the brain. What Addy does know is that the brain carries the history of long use. Someone may go years, even decades, without using, and then face a death or a lost job. Stress is one of the strongest triggers for craving and relapse, and in a brain shaped by past use it can be enough to cause a slip.
He asks for a longer view: “It’s not that God can’t change it, but we should have kind of a bigger and broader perspective about where is God taking this person in their life journey and in their journey with him.” He tells of his colleague Dr. Myra Mathis, who worked with a patient struggling with alcohol use disorder. Approach after approach failed. Then the patient had three sober days, and Addy describes the joy on her face. Many of us would shrug at three days. She saw progress worth celebrating.
Fields draws the practical conclusion that God’s gifts still have to be managed. A real deliverance is something you steward, especially when life gets hard. A relapse is painful information. It does not settle whether God ever touched your life.
Why Does Doing This Alone Keep Failing?
Deep, authentic community changes the brain. Addy describes oxytocin, a molecule first understood through childbirth and the bond between mother and child, and later linked to family and relational bonds. In close relationships, oxytocin is released in parts of the brain that handle reward, and it interacts with dopamine. He reports that in experiments, rats and mice housed in community are less likely to choose a substance when it is offered, because they already have the reward of being together.
Isolation works the other way. Addy says people in isolation show higher rates of physical illness, depression, anxiety and substance use. Under stress, people who feel no one understands tend to withdraw, and the withdrawal feeds the very thing they are fighting. His summary is simple: “That’s not how God created us.”
Genesis records God’s own assessment:
“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18).
The verse is about the creation of the woman and the first human companionship, so it should not become a recovery slogan. Its basic claim, that human beings were made for one another, is what Addy’s research keeps finding.
Many people isolate because community hurt them. Fields names the bind: people retreat to avoid harm, yet they cannot heal without community. Addy is careful with this. Telling someone to go right back to the person or situation that traumatized them, he says, is not helpful. What a hurt person needs is one place where they can be known without being harmed, and finding it may take time.
Where Do Prayer and Professional Help Meet?
Addy uses a medical comparison. If he were having a heart attack and his friends prayed over him but never called for help, he says he would ask them, “Why didn’t you pray and call the ambulance?” Afterward the doctors would tell him to change his diet and exercise. If he ignored them and kept asking why God wasn’t healing him, he would be treating good counsel as information only. The test is whether he acts on it: “If I’m not actually changing my practices,” the counsel has not yet done its work.
The analogy has limits. Addiction involves the will and moral choices in ways a clogged artery does not. Its use is narrower: prayer and treatment are not rivals, and neither replaces daily work.
Fields presses the point for people who lean entirely on therapy. She believes in therapy and has a therapist, but an hour a week alone is not enough, because one person in one room hears only your perspective. She calls the combination of a therapist, community and a relationship with God a “holy trinity of healing.” Addy agrees: “Doesn’t have to be prayer or therapy. It can be prayer and therapy and doing the work and being in a relationship with other people and pursuing your relationship with God.”
Not every addiction has the same root. Fields describes a friend whose sex addiction grew from childhood sexual abuse he had never told anyone about. He found real help in a structured program that gave him concrete tools. Christians, she says, too often hear about someone’s repeated falling and skip the question of what is feeding it: “We just tell them not to do it.” Addy responds that “different situations are gonna require different interventions,” noting that in Scripture “God didn’t heal people the same way every single time.” If your struggle sits on top of a wound you have never spoken aloud, a trained counselor is a fitting place for that wound to be addressed, and seeing one is no retreat from faith.
Where Do I Actually Begin?
Addy’s first step is the one many people skip. He says “the really first, important step is actually what you did in that question and just that acknowledgement.” A person who will not admit the problem to themselves will not act on it. If you are unsure whether you face a bad habit or an addiction, his signs are concrete:
- Is it disrupting your work or your care for your family?
- “Do they spend more and more time doing that thing and less and less time on other things?”
- Do you grow agitated without it?
- Is it causing physical, psychological or social damage?
The next step is telling someone, and the choice of person matters. Addy notes that when someone opens up, “our automatic reaction is to try and fix it,” and the person shuts down. Look for someone who listens first and can help connect you to resources. That might be a pastor. Addy also recommends the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which he says has chapters across the country and connects people with local support. Not every counselor or program will understand you, and he encourages people not to give up after one poor fit. One bad experience says nothing about whether help exists.

James pairs honesty and prayer:
“Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed” (James 5:16).
Fields reads that sequence as honest speech in community, then prayer, then healing. She also observes that people who share the fuller story tend to receive better counsel than those who mention only the surface struggle. That is an invitation, and the pace belongs to you. You choose the safe person and how much to say, and you can start small. Addy insists the burden runs both ways: “There’s still both sides ’cause we have to listen well.”
When the Struggle Turns Darker
Addiction, depression and despair often travel together, and Addy addresses one myth directly. Many people fear that asking someone about suicidal thoughts will plant the idea. He says the opposite is true: “All the research shows that like when you bring that up to someone, they’re more likely to get help.” If someone you love talks about not wanting to be here, ask them plainly, tell them you are there to listen and help them reach care.
If you are the one having those thoughts, please do not wait. Reach out at any hour, and if you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services. Reaching out is no failure of faith. God often sends help through other people.

Breaking free rarely arrives as one moment that settles everything. More often it looks like a person who has stopped hiding, who tells the truth to someone safe, lets trained people work on what was trained into them and keeps praying through the slow middle. Three days counts. So do the next three.
