The popular story says Black millennials are walking away from faith. Dr. Brianna K. Parker’s research points somewhere else. Many young adults who are absent from the Black church are still talking about God, still holding expectations of the church, and still hoping it will live up to its best self. What they are rejecting is a pattern: a welcome that takes their money but caps their leadership, a habit of asking the wrong people for advice, and ministries built for needs from decades ago.
That claim deserves testing. A narrative of generational abandonment makes predictions. If it were true, we would expect young adults to lose interest in theological questions, to stop expecting anything from the church, and to drift into indifference. Parker’s findings cut against each of those expectations. They also complicate the story in a way most church conversations miss: some of the young people the church counts as present were never actually reached.
What the Research Consists Of
Before weighing any conclusion, it helps to know where it comes from. Parker, the founding curator of the Black Millennial Cafe, describes doctoral research on Black millennials and faith built from more than 1,000 surveys (she gives the figure as 1,032), a series of small groups and four in-depth interviews. The surveys give breadth and the interviews give depth, and the two answer different questions.
Her headline finding comes from the broad research: “My research showed Black millennials still have hope in the Black church, even if they’re not there. They just wanna see the Black church at its best.”
The first half of that sentence admits absence. The second denies that absence equals rejection. If Parker’s reading holds, the church is facing a generation that is waiting to be given a reason to come back, which is a very different problem from a generation that has written it off.
One limit belongs at the start. Parker’s sample concerns Black millennials of faith. A study of young adults who still identify with faith will naturally find more hope than a study of those who have left religion altogether, and her research as described does not report disaffiliation rates. So the honest conclusion is narrower than a slogan: among Black millennials connected to faith, Parker found continued hope in the Black church rather than contempt for it.
Were Some of Them Never Really There?
The most surprising evidence comes from one of the four interviews, and it fits neither the panic nor the reassurance. Parker met a young woman who grew up in a heavily churched family and was fully active. In Parker’s words, “She followed all the rules of church, she said all her Easter speeches.” She attended youth church and was involved at every level. Partway through the interview, she told Parker she had never believed any of it.
Parker had served as a youth pastor during seminary, and she says the discovery left her heartbroken when she thought it through: that a young person could be present “that long at that level of engagement, and you really miss them.”
This is where the abandonment narrative breaks down. It assumes a sequence in which young people believe and then leave. This case shows participation without belief, followed eventually, perhaps, by departure. A church that measures faith by attendance will misdiagnose both ends of that story. It will celebrate the presence of someone who was never reached, and it will mourn as lost faith the exit of someone who never had faith to lose.
The limit is equally clear. It is one interview. Parker suggests the experience is probably not unique, only rarely talked about. That is a reasonable judgment, but one case cannot tell us how common such young people are. What it establishes is that they exist, and that an engaged, well-meaning youth pastor can miss them completely.
Why the Word “Fugitive”
Parker titled her widely shared article about this group “The Fugitive.” When people asked why she did not choose the word refugee, her answer was short: “Because they’re still being hunted.”
She does not offer a formal definition contrasting the two terms, and it would be a mistake to invent one. What she explains is the logic of the choice. A refugee flees toward safety, while a fugitive is pursued. The church never stops pursuing young adults. Every congregation says it needs the next generation, and every organization, she notes, wants to capture millennials. The word describes the hunter’s posture as much as the person being hunted.
That turns the original question around. The usual question asks why young people are running. Parker’s word asks what it is like to be chased by an institution that wants you badly and does not seem to know what to do with you once it has you.
A Welcome With a Ceiling
Here Parker’s evidence is pointed. The Black church keeps calling for younger people to get involved, she says, but “they hold us at this level of participation that does not allow us to use our gifts in a way that’s gonna be most productive.” Churches do not inventory young adults’ gifts, she adds, “because they still think of us as children.”
The contradiction gives the charge its force. Churches have always welcomed young people’s tithes and offerings. “I’ve never been too young to give,” Parker says. Yet in many places, people under 40, and sometimes over 40, are treated as too young to lead or to be taken seriously. Her summary of the pattern: “You’re young until you’re not.”
The welcome is real, and so is the limit on it. Young adults are invited in and asked to give, while the path to real responsibility stays closed. Any congregation can test this. Compare the people who give and serve with the people who make decisions. If young adults appear in the first two groups and are missing from the third, the ceiling exists whether anyone intended it or not.
Scripture offers a pointed contrast. Paul wrote to Timothy, a young church leader:
“Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity” (1 Timothy 4:12).
In context, Paul is charging Timothy himself rather than setting a policy on leadership age, and the older English word conversation means conduct, the way one lives. The verse puts the burden on the young leader’s character. It also assumes something many churches resist: that a young person could hold real responsibility, and that age alone was no reason to dismiss him.
Where the Conversation Went
If young adults had abandoned God, one would expect the theological conversation to go quiet. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, offered her own observation that it has moved: millennials holding theological conversations over brunch and at the gym, away from any sanctuary. Parker agreed and extended the list to mimosas and rooftops. Congregations of every label are optional now, she says: “We can do that on a rooftop.”
This is observation, not survey data, and it cannot say how many young adults talk about faith this way. It does point in the same direction as Parker’s finding of continued hope. People who have given up on God rarely keep gathering to argue about God. The interest appears to have survived while the venue changed.
Parker draws the consequence. The church “really has to make a decision of as to how much work we’re gonna be willing to put in, how open we’re going to be to new things, and how relevant we wanna be.” The decision sits with the institution. A generation that can have honest conversation about faith on a rooftop will choose a gathered church only if it offers something the rooftop cannot.
Asking the Wrong People
Parker’s explanation for why churches misread young adults concerns method. Churches often ask millennials who grew up in the church and never left what unchurched millennials want. “That’s the worst thing you can ever do,” she says, because lifelong insiders “only know how to talk church to you.” She calls some of them Stepford Christians, young adults who know exactly what leadership wants to hear. Fields made the same point from her own Pentecostal background, noting how far churchy lingo sits from the average millennial. Asking insiders about outsiders, she said, “You might as well ask the elderly person in the church.”
Parker gives a concrete case. During a youth, young adult and children’s month, her church asked young adults what they wanted service to look like. They said they wanted it exciting. Asked for an order of service, they listed prayer first, Scripture next, then announcements, the same sequence as always. When she pressed them on why, the answers circled back to habit. A sincere desire for something new produced the old form exactly, which is the weakness of insider testimony: honest answers that cannot see past the walls that formed them.
Her alternative is simple and demanding. Survey your actual area and ask people outside your four walls. She warns against copying another church, since a congregation near three colleges, a downtown church reaching young professionals in North Carolina, and a church in a city she recalls as about 3 percent Black face different realities. She also cautions that much popular research on reaching millennials is “usually research that’s been done on white evangelicals,” which may not transfer to Black congregations.
What Young Adults Are Looking For
Parker recommends questions in place of assumptions: “Where are you? What do you need right now? What do you need from us?” Singles ministry shows the cost of skipping them. Many churches assume single people mainly need instruction about sex, while Parker’s own answer is “When I wanna talk about sex, I don’t go to church.” A single Black woman, she suggests, may be more concerned with what an advanced degree means for her social life and her hopes of marriage and family. By her account, millennials are the most degreed generation and also the most indebted, which is why her research pointed toward conversations about financial stability and literacy.
She adds an observation that bears directly on the leaving question: “Many of the church kids that have walked away, they do know what they need and they might not be in church today because they’re getting that somewhere else or something else takes priority.” Read this way, departure looks like substitution. People still have needs, and they have found other places to meet them.
Parker presses hardest on incarceration. Pointing to what she describes as high incarceration rates among Black and brown millennials, she warns that “if you don’t have some type of program for returning citizens, you won’t have a church.” She places financial literacy, mental health and physical health on the same list of ministries churches should assess, and sets them against the comfortable ones: “It’s good to have a choir, but you’re gonna have a choir no matter what.” Fields put the resulting test in one question: “Is this church having an impact or is this church just having a service?”
Belonging also involves being seen. Parker says of her own church home, “I need to see myself in the God I serve,” and she questions whether many churches teach the racial and ethnic truths present in the Bible. She has watched young Christians who are active in protest go to church on Sunday and, in her phrase, “divorce the two.” A church that never connects faith to a person’s history leaves that person holding convictions in separate rooms, and the faith they keep stays smaller than it needs to be.
What the Evidence Does and Does Not Show
Parker’s research does not show a generation turning its back on faith. It shows young adults who still hope in the Black church, who keep talking about God elsewhere, and who are leaving specific failures: a capped welcome, insider-only listening and outdated ministry. It also shows something the abandonment story cannot account for, which is that some of the people inside were never reached at all.
The evidence does not establish how many have left, how many have lost faith entirely, or how common the never-believing insider is. Anyone who answers those questions with confidence is speaking past the data.
Parker’s warning holds without those numbers: “If you do not have millennials, you do not have a Black church in a couple decades, simply put.” The harder lesson from her fugitive is that the church’s most familiar measure, the full pew, cannot show whether that future is already slipping away. A church that wants to know where it stands will have to stop counting who is present and start asking who has actually been reached.
