A lot of Christians could put the problem in one sentence: I have people around me at church, but no one who really knows me. They attend, serve and are greeted by name, and still carry their real troubles home alone.
The likeliest reason is not the wrong church or shallow people. Most Christians were never trained to do friendship. Churches teach people how to date, marry and raise children, and then expect friendship to happen on its own. Being near people only takes showing up. Being known takes skills, and skills have to be learned. Kristen Newton has built her work around that gap, and her diagnosis changes what a lonely churchgoer should do next.
Why Doesn’t Being Around Christians Add Up to Being Known?
Look at what church life gives its attention to. Newton notes that people tend to get sorted into two lanes, married or in the singles ministry, and little else. “I think we have glorified marriage and the boo and dating,” she says. She asks a pointed question: if someone is never called to marriage, do they have to give up intimacy and connection? Her answer is no. Friendship is how that person thrives in community.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, takes it one step further. Because almost every relationship illustration in church is about marriage, people quietly put their effort into romance and let their friendships slide, and the church pays for it. “You can’t have church community without strong relationships,” she says. Churches weaken their own communities, in her words, “because we’ve only gave people the tools for one aspect of their life.”
That last line holds the whole argument. The shortage is not people. It is tools. A room can be full of believers who sincerely love God and have never practiced telling a friend the truth, working through a conflict or asking a second question after “How are you?” The cost shows up in more than loneliness. Newton points to church hurt, church splits and broken relationships, and she names the contradiction: “How we can have the ministry of reconciliation, but we’re not yet reconciled with one another and we’re doing ministry together and we’re fellowshipping every Sunday.”
Shouldn’t Friendship Just Happen Naturally?
This is the assumption most people never notice they hold. Adults who date have learned to ask early questions about family, childhood and the baggage someone brings. Friendship gets no such care. As Fields puts it, “Friendship, we think, should be free-flowing.” A best friend is supposed to form naturally, so the deliberate conversations never happen.
There is a second reason those conversations feel odd. We live in a culture that, in Fields’s words, “has created intimacy as a synonym for sex.” In that culture, deliberately trying to get close to a friend can feel almost romantic. Asking a friend real questions starts to feel like crossing a line that does not actually exist.
Newton calls the assumption false outright: “That is the lie, that intentionality is reserved for romantic relationships.” She grants that many friendships begin with easy chemistry. What she denies is that chemistry keeps anything alive. In any relationship that lasts, “none of it happens organically.” People who end friendships because the vibe changed have missed that “nothing sustains the same vibe forever.”
This is where the training diagnosis earns its keep. If friendship is supposed to be effortless, its absence looks like bad luck or a cold church. If friendship is a practice, its absence looks like something you can start learning.
What Were We Never Taught?
Newton’s Heart Convos work names the conversations friendship needs:
- honesty, without having to lie to keep the peace
- naming the elephant-sized issue everyone sees
- showing up as your actual self
- dealing with conflict in real time instead of storing grudges
- letting someone see what they would never see unless you showed them
Most Christians have heard that these things matter. What they lack are two quieter skills underneath them.
The first is knowing what you feel. Many people get no further than feeling some kind of way, which gives a friend nothing to work with. Newton recommends a feelings wheel, a chart that moves from broad words like angry toward precise ones like let down, betrayed or resentful. Fields describes how it works in practice. You ask why you are so upset and realize the moment reminds you of an older disappointment. Then you can ask whether this situation really is the same one. Skip that step and a present friend gets blamed for a past wound, and the friendship breaks over something it never caused. Newton names therapy, counseling and honest community as places where this self-awareness grows. She is blunt about what passes for connection instead: “A lot of people are having conversations, but they’re not saying nothing.”
The second is knowing how you and your friend handle conflict. Fields describes a recent conflict with a friend who gets louder when angry while she goes quiet. Both cared equally. They simply showed it in opposite ways, and each style is easy to misread. The quiet one looks indifferent. The loud one looks hostile. Newton, who calls herself the loud one, says the fix is to tell each other ahead of time. If you go inward to process, say so, and say when you will come back to it. Without that, friends keep missing each other, build stories about each other’s motives and drift away.
Why Do Church Friendships End Instead of Growing?
When people lack the skills to work through friction, leaving is the easiest move. Fields finds it strange how often Christians talk about cutting people off in order to reach the next level. “We are the body of Christ, so you don’t say in the natural, I gotta cut my leg off for my whole body to be elevated,” she says. Some relationships really are toxic, she grants, but far fewer than the label suggests.
Newton thinks the word gets pinned on anyone who disagrees, is less mature or brings their mess along. In her view, “a lot of that is just an excuse for not having the conversation around expectations.” Her own definition is narrow: a toxic person “is a person who is not only in a place of unhealth, but they’re aware of their unhealth and they’re unwilling to grow.” The narrowness matters. If flaws disqualified a friend, no one would have friends, since “everybody’s got issues, everybody’s got blind spots, everybody’s got junk.” Many church friendships end not because someone was harmful, but because neither person knew how to say what they expected. Disappointment had nowhere to go but the door.
How Does an Acquaintance Become a Friend?
Fields brings up a proverb:
“A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24).
Proverbs offers wisdom, not guarantees, so the verse does not promise that friendliness always produces a friend. It does treat friendship as something a person takes part in rather than something that happens to them. Many modern translations render the first half differently, roughly as a warning that a person with many companions can still come to ruin. Read that way, the proverb nearly describes the lonely churchgoer: plenty of companions, and still waiting for the one who sticks closer.
The first steps are plain. Newton’s advice is to “start with where you are,” and for most Christians that place is obvious: “If you’re a Christian and you’re going to church every Sunday, you got a whole group of people you could just start with there.” Speak, which is rarer than it sounds, since “you would be surprised how many people don’t speak ’cause they don’t have to.” Learn full names, jobs and interests. Basic knowledge moves someone from stranger to the next tier.
The decisive step is different in kind. Newton says “practicing vulnerability is really where deep connection is formed,” and she grounds it in the words of Jesus:
“Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you” (John 15:15).
Jesus speaks these words to his disciples on the night before his death, and the friendship he names rests on disclosure. Applying that to ordinary friendship is an analogy rather than the verse’s main subject, but a fair one. In Jesus’s own words, friendship is marked by what is made known.
Newton pictures it as a house. Honesty is giving someone your address. Openness is letting them through the front door. Transparency is the tour of the tidy rooms. Vulnerability is opening the closet where everything gets thrown, which means “you’re exposing something that gives people the ability to hurt you if they know it.” Two church members can be honest, open and even transparent every week and never open that closet, which is exactly how years of acquaintance stay acquaintance. The everyday version is small: “If your day was awful, say your day was awful.”
Isn’t Vulnerability Just a Way to Get Hurt?
Yes, and neither Newton nor Fields pretends otherwise. Newton says “the exact same formula for being loved is the exact same formula for being egregiously hurt.” Fields goes further. Anyone you are vulnerable with will hurt you at some point, on purpose or not, because people are fallen. “That is the cost of vulnerability that you’re going to be hurt,” she says. Sharing deeply and never being wounded is not on offer.
The reason to accept that cost is what Newton calls “the amount of freedom that comes with being vulnerable”: being fully known and still accepted. She sees that love in David and Jonathan and in Ruth and Naomi. Above all, she sees it in Jesus and his closest disciples, and she points to his words:
“By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35).
Her claim is that unconditional acceptance is not reserved for marriage. It is how believers are meant to treat each other.
She also ties it back to marriage. Forgiveness and patience do not appear fully formed on a wedding day. “So you have not been practicing forgiveness and working through difficult stuff and accepting people unconditionally and letting people practice vulnerability in front of you,” she says. She doubts anyone simply picks those skills up once the vows are said. That is her judgment, not a study, but it follows from her central point that friendship is where these skills are learned.
What if My Life Is Too Full for This?
This is the most common pushback: kids, games on Saturday, barely making it to church on Sunday, nothing left over. Newton’s reply is not gentle: “You need to change your priorities.” She is not asking families to drop their children’s activities. She is asking whether those activities happen in relationship. “Do you know the other moms? Do you know the other parents?” If you see the same people every weekend, you already have a place to begin.
Married readers face a particular trap. A spouse can be a best friend, Newton says, but not the only one, because “a man cannot provide everything that a woman needs socially and relationally.” In her words, “That man needs some brothers and that woman needs some sisters.” A household that puts every relational need on one person can find itself with no one else when children leave or a spouse dies.
The training diagnosis has a real limit. Learning these skills does not guarantee anyone will return them. Newton’s own example depends on the other person meeting you in that vulnerability, and some won’t. Some churches really do make it hard to be known. None of this means every lonely person has failed. It means waiting for friendship to arrive on its own rarely works, and your own practice is the part you can change.
So why is there no one at church who really knows you? Often because no one there was ever shown how, and neither were you. That is harder to hear than “your church is cold,” but it leaves more to work with, because a skill can be learned and does not need a crowd. Newton’s advice for a lonely season is modest on purpose: “Find just one person that you feel like you can be intentional with and start there.” The people are already in the room. The practice is what has been missing.
