Fannie Lou Hamer was a Mississippi Delta sharecropper, the last of twenty children, who left school after the sixth grade and spent most of her life picking cotton. By 1964 she was testifying about a jailhouse beating before the Credentials Committee of the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City. Historian Jemar Tisby argues that her Christian faith carried her the whole way. For decades it gave her the strength to endure. Later it became the reason she would not stay quiet. He calls her an organic theologian: a woman with almost no schooling who read Scripture closely enough to turn it into an argument while she was in custody.
The best way to test that claim is to follow her life in the order it happened. A faith that only consoles and a faith that sends a person into danger are different things, and the evidence of her life shows when and how one gave way to the other.
The System She Was Born Into
Hamer’s choices only look as radical as they were once the system around her is clear. After the Civil War, plantation owners were short of money but still needed cheap labor, and sharecropping met that need. On paper, a family farmed a section of land, handed part of the crop to the owner and kept the rest. In practice, families bought seed, tools and livestock on credit at the plantation commissary. The owner set the prices and also tallied the harvest, so the books came out even or in debt year after year, and the debt passed down to the children. Terror held it all in place. Lynching hung over Black men, and rape and everyday abuse hung over Black women.
She was born into that world in the Delta, which Tisby calls the poorest area of one of the poorest states. In winter her mother wrapped the children’s feet in rags against the frozen ground, and some dinners were only onions and a piece of bread. When she was about six, the plantation owner tempted her with treats to pick thirty pounds of cotton in a week. She never stopped picking after that, and as a grown woman she picked as much as the men, or more.
One survival practice from those years shows how the poor lived at the edges. After the owner’s harvest was in, sharecroppers asked permission to gather leftover cotton from the ground and the bolls. They called it scrapping cotton, and sometimes they collected enough for a bale of their own. Tisby compares it to Israel’s harvest laws, which told landowners to leave the corners and gleanings of the field for the poor (Leviticus 19:9–10). He also marks the difference. In Israel, generosity was written into the harvest. In the Delta, the poor had to ask for what remained after their labor had been taken.
She married Perry Hamer, known as Pap, another sharecropper. In Tisby’s account, she later went into a hospital for a minor procedure to remove cysts and woke up without a uterus, because a white doctor had performed a hysterectomy without her knowledge. She had wanted children, and Tisby says she never got over it. He includes the episode deliberately, observing that many accounts mention it only in passing if at all. It belongs to the gendered violence that marked her life long before any jail cell.
Why Trust the Faith of Her Oppressors?
This is the strongest objection to the whole story, and Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, put it directly. The people carrying out this violence often called themselves Christians. “It would seem to suggest that she would reject everything about the Christian faith because those who were the oppressors were Christians.”
Tisby takes the question seriously. “That’s always been the great mystery of Black faith, hasn’t it?” he answers. His reply is historical before it is theological. Before roughly the 1730s and 1740s, he says, few enslaved Africans converted, for the obvious reason that the people preaching to them were the people enslaving them. That changed with the First Great Awakening, when huge open-air revivals, often interracial, let Black listeners hear preachers such as George Whitefield. Black converts, in Tisby’s reading, saw through the slaveholders’ religion to the God of the Exodus and the Bible’s wider story of liberation. They treated the abuse of Christianity as a betrayal of it. Ultimately, he says, that recognition was “a God thing.”
By the twentieth century nearly every Black Southerner was Baptist or Methodist. Baptist churches grew fastest because the barrier to entry was low and ordination did not require the formal education segregation withheld. Hamer grew up in a devout home inside that world of small country churches, where Sunday was often an all-day gathering and one of the few places Black people were treated with dignity.
None of this proves every enslaved or sharecropping Christian reasoned the way Tisby describes. It does answer the specific objection. Hamer did not take her faith from the plantation owner. She received it through a Black church tradition that had spent two centuries telling the gospel apart from the people who abused it.
August 1962
For most of her life, Tisby says, Hamer’s faith worked as it did for many African Americans: “Before she was ever an activist, her faith was helping her survive.” It gave her perseverance in a place with little to look forward to and every reason to expect her children would stay poor.
The turning point was a voting rights meeting in August 1962, sponsored by the Council of Federated Organizations, where she heard Rev. James Bevel, James Forman and Bob Moses. Tisby reads her later recollection of that night: “They talked about how it was our rights as human beings to register and vote. I never knew we could vote before. Nobody ever told us.”
She had lived her whole life without being told about a right the Constitution already guaranteed, and that silence was part of how the system worked. Once she knew, she tied the vote at once to justice for the poor. As Tisby quotes her: “I could just see myself voting people outta office that I know was wrong and didn’t do nothing to help the poor.”
She went to register the following Friday. White landowners were themselves policed by other white people, and an owner whose sharecropper tried to vote could face consequences. Her owner told her to take her name off the rolls or be fired. Her answer, as Tisby recounts it: “I didn’t go down there to register for you. I went down there to register for myself.”
She and her husband had worked that land for eighteen years. They were put off it, with no money and nowhere to go. Tisby observes that many people in her position would have stopped there, with a family to feed and an honest attempt already made. She kept organizing. Her own words from that year do not cite a verse. They speak of rights “as human beings” and of the poor. What the record does show is that the faith she had carried for decades did not end when she stepped into danger. It went with her, and within months it was doing work no one had asked of it before.
Scripture in a Mississippi Jail
Hamer began organizing for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She loved its young workers, Tisby says, partly because they went out to the plantations where more comfortable activists seldom went. The work made her a target. Riding home on a bus with other activists, she was arrested on bogus charges and taken to the jail in Winona.
The beating left permanent damage to one of her eyes and one of her kidneys. The women were taken out one at a time, including a teenager on her first civil rights trip. When Hamer’s turn came, officers forced two Black inmates to beat her with blackjacks. When her dress rode up, the white sheriff kept pulling it back so she could not cover herself. Tisby notes the parallel with lynching scenes where Black men were forced, under threat of death, to take part in killing their own people.
Afterward, the jailer’s wife and daughter secretly brought the prisoners cold water. Hamer said to them, in Tisby’s telling, “Y’all’s nice, you must be Christian people.” He reads the line as shrewd. If they were Christians moved to pity, why were they not stopping the beatings? Then she pointed them to two verses.
“Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation” (Proverbs 26:26).
Shewed is the older spelling of shown. As wisdom literature, the proverb describes how hidden malice tends to come to light in public. Hamer applied it that way: cruelty concealed behind small kindnesses does not stay concealed.
“And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation” (Acts 17:26).
Paul says this to Athenians at the Areopagus while explaining who the Creator is. The verse is a claim about all humanity: every people comes from one origin under one God. Tisby sums up her point as a plain question: we are the same human race, so why treat me like this? She did not have to stretch the text. A jail run on racial hierarchy was itself a denial of what Acts 17:26 asserts.
This is the evidence behind the phrase “organic theologian.” Bruised and in custody, she chose two texts that fit the moral situation exactly and gave them to the people with power to act. Tisby’s judgment that “the sophistication of her theology is really impressive” rests on moments like this.
Atlantic City
Mississippi’s Democratic Party was then the party of segregation, and its primary, the only contest that mattered in the state, shut Black voters out. The Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party formed to challenge the all-white delegation for seats at the 1964 national convention in Atlantic City, and Hamer was among its most prominent delegates.
Before the convention’s Credentials Committee, she testified about the Winona beating. Tisby’s account is that President Lyndon B. Johnson, afraid Southern Democrats would revolt and block his legislation, called a press conference with no real occasion to pull the cameras away from her. The networks aired her testimony that evening anyway. Readers can check those details against the histories Tisby recommends, including Charles Marsh’s God’s Long Summer, which devotes its first chapter to her faith. His larger point concerns what she made of the trauma. Like other activists who survived police brutality, she did not let it make her bitter. The beating became her testimony.
The Church That Mostly Stayed Home
The Black church was less involved than people now assume, Tisby argues. He cites a scholarly estimate that only about ten percent of Black churches actively took part in the movement through marching, protesting or boycotting, even if more supported its goals. Fields says she has heard figures as low as three to four percent and warns that “sometimes we have a romanticized memory.” Both numbers come from the speakers and are estimates. The direction is the point: the movement drew on church people without drawing on most churches.
Hamer felt that gap personally. She mocked what Tisby calls “chicken eating” preachers, who went from house to house to be fed and praised but would not speak up for the poor. Her rebuke, as Tisby quotes it, begins: “People need to be serious about their faith in the Lord. It’s all too easy to say, sure, I’m a Christian and talk a big game.” It ends with a line he gives in two parts: “You can pray until you faint.” And then: “but if you’re not gonna get up and do something, God’s not gonna put it in your lap.”
Her argument runs close to James:
“Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone” (James 2:17).
James is not teaching that works earn salvation. He is saying that faith which never acts shows itself to be lifeless. Hamer’s target was the kind of prayer that excuses a person from doing anything, while prayer itself was never in question. Tisby’s summary: “Hers was a faith with feet.”
What She Kept to the End
After the convention, invitations to speak poured in, but she put whatever money came back into the cause and never considered leaving Mississippi. She started a farm cooperative for poor sharecroppers, including a pig bank: a family received a pig, returned some of the piglets and kept the rest. Fundraising was always a struggle, and the effort folded. She died in 1977, poor and, in Tisby’s words, relatively alone and unknown. Only in the years since has her importance been widely recognized.
What she held onto is the line Tisby treasures most:
— Fannie Lou Hamer
That sentence explains how her life holds together. She grounded her refusal to hate in her hope of seeing God, rather than in her own health or in any tactic. The hope that carried her through the cotton fields also let her face down a plantation owner, quote Acts to a jailer’s family and rebuke idle preachers without becoming what she fought. Her story corrects two easy assumptions at once. One is that Christian faith in the Jim Crow South was only a tool of the oppressor. The other is that the church as a body rose up to resist. Faith like hers was real, and it was rarer than the comfortable memory allows.
