Athanasius was a fourth-century bishop of Alexandria, in Egypt, who refused to let the church treat Jesus as anything less than fully God. Church historian Dr. John Tyson places him among the indigenous Coptic people of North Africa. Emperors drove him from his post again and again for that refusal. The creed the Council of Nicaea wrote in 325 summarizes what he and his bishop taught. Christians who confess that creed today are standing where an African bishop stood when standing there cost him his home.
That matters for a charge that follows Christianity through Black communities: that it is the white man’s religion. The Jude 3 Project teaches that the charge is historically inaccurate, because the faith took root in Africa centuries before it reached much of Europe. Athanasius is one of the clearest witnesses to that history. Tyson says the role African people played in shaping early Christianity is the “subtext” of his own book on Athanasius. The bishop’s life also shows how a doctrine many Christians take for granted was argued out in the first place, and what it cost.
What Can We Actually Know About His Early Life?
Less than we would like. For someone born this early in Christian history, Tyson says, “the paper trail is not really very good.” There are no journals, no personal letters and no public records. What survives comes from three places: what Athanasius says about himself, what his opponents said about him (often mockingly) and the tradition of the church, meaning stories passed hand to hand and written down later. Tyson describes his method as gathering those fragments and checking them against known historical facts.
That caution applies to the most famous story about his childhood. As tradition tells it, Bishop Alexander of Alexandria looked out his window toward the shore and saw children playing church. One boy preached and then baptized four or five of the others. Alexander sent for him, questioned him about the faith and found he knew so much that he declared those beach baptisms valid. Athanasius then grew up close to Alexander, almost as an adopted son, and was mentored to become his successor. He did succeed him.
The beach scene belongs to the tradition, not the documented record, and early Christian biography is fond of childhood scenes that foreshadow the adult. What survives the skepticism is what the rest of the record supports. Athanasius was formed early inside the Alexandrian church, close to its bishop, and he took over Alexander’s work. Tyson adds one more piece of context. He believes Athanasius was born just before a severe persecution in North Africa, when simply owning portions of Scripture could be punished. Some believers died rather than surrender those Scriptures or turn in other Christians. Athanasius’s convictions formed in a church that knew what faithfulness could cost.
A Question the Bible Raised and No Council Had Answered
Modern readers tend to assume the core of Christian belief arrived fully worded. Tyson corrects that. In Athanasius’s early years, he says, “it wasn’t a done deal.” He spells out what that meant: “There had been no church councils. There’d been no creeds.” The church had its Scriptures, but who Jesus is, and what it means to call him both man and God, had not been settled in any formal way.
Athanasius worked the question out by studying Scripture closely, and the center of his conviction was the opening of John’s Gospel:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1).
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:14).
Read in sequence, the passage first identifies the Word with God and then says this same Word became flesh. For Athanasius, as Tyson presents him, that was the core of the whole truth about Christ: the second person of the Trinity, God before all time, became a human being.
A rival reading grew up in the same city and the same church. Arius, a presbyter in Alexandria, read “the Word was made flesh” another way. In Tyson’s summary, Arius saw Jesus’s divinity as a purification of his humanity: a human being who became more godlike. The view drew followers for an understandable reason. It brought Jesus close to ordinary human experience. He grew in grace, strength and spirituality, the way we hope to.
What Did He Think Was at Stake?
Here the dispute becomes more than a quarrel over terms. Tyson states Athanasius’s objection plainly: “If you go with the divinity of Jesus in that way, you wind up losing something that’s very important, his ability to save us from our sins.”
The reasoning runs like this. A human being who climbed toward God can be an example. He can show us the way up. In Tyson’s words, Arius’s view leaves us with “a human being who can challenge us to be like him, but cannot stand in our place” before God as an offering for sin. An example can be followed. It cannot carry anyone. Athanasius held that only someone truly God and truly man could do what salvation requires.
Tyson calls this Athanasius’s main contribution, larger than his role at Nicaea: an account of “how what we say about Jesus Christ affects how we think about our salvation and our relationship with God.” Athanasius compressed it into a well-known line from On the Incarnation: the Word “was made man that we might be made God.” In Tyson’s explanation, faith in Christ’s death and resurrection transforms believers. They share more and more in his holiness in this life, and they hope to be raised like him and be with God. For Athanasius, what Christians say about Jesus and what they hope for themselves stand or fall together.
What Did Nicaea Decide in 325?
The dispute did not stay inside the church. Constantine, before taking control of the whole empire, reported a vision and had his soldiers mark their shields with the first two Greek letters of Christ’s name, the Chi-Rho. After winning, he expected Christianity to hold a unified empire together. Then he discovered that Christians could not agree on who Jesus was. He sent letters and representatives to Alexandria urging a settlement. Arius would not yield to his bishop, and neither Alexander nor Athanasius would yield to Arius.
So in 325 a council met at Nicaea, in what is now northwest Turkey. Tyson puts attendance at some 310 bishops, along with their representatives and helpers. The debate ran for days. Alexander’s view, which was also Athanasius’s, that Jesus was both very God and very man, prevailed. Arius and about four bishops who backed him refused to give way and were voted out of the church. The council then wrote a creed, which Tyson describes as both a profession of faith and a teaching tool. It more or less summarizes what Alexander and Athanasius had taught in Alexandria.
The belief came first, argued from John’s Gospel in a local church. The council came second and put it into words. Keeping that order straight answers a common assumption, that an emperor’s meeting invented a doctrine that was actually older than the meeting.
Why Did the Winning Side Keep Getting Exiled?
Nicaea did not end it. About four years later, in Tyson’s account, Arius’s supporters told Constantine that Arius had repented. They drew up a document that neither clearly agreed with the creed nor clearly rejected it. Tyson calls it “kind of weasel words.” Arius signed, and Constantine, who cared more about unity than precision, accepted him back.
Constantine then ordered Athanasius, now bishop of Alexandria, to receive Arius. Tyson gives the substance of the reply this way: “I don’t have to receive him back until I’m convinced he believes that Jesus is really God.” Athanasius was not convinced. Constantine had him removed and sent to Gaul in Western Europe, where he spent several years.
The pattern outlived Constantine. Three of his sons divided the empire. One agreed with Athanasius, one was undecided and one sided with Arius. From then on, whether Athanasius could serve in Alexandria depended on who held power and what that ruler believed. Tyson counts five separate exiles, each leaving him persecuted and liable to harm or imprisonment, because he would not bend on whether Jesus is truly divine.
This record also answers a popular theory that Athanasius was working with Constantine to install the deity of Jesus as imperial doctrine. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, argues that the exile undercuts it. A partner of the emperor would have done what the emperor asked. Athanasius did the opposite and paid for it. Tyson draws a wider lesson, that even then “political entanglements were not particularly good for the church,” while insisting that Christians still have to be involved in society. He calls that a complicated matter for people of faith, and the bishop’s career shows why.
Was He Really African, and Was He Black?
His opponents called him the Black Dwarf, and some online debates deny that the nickname was ever his. Tyson’s case for Athanasius’s African and Coptic identity rests on three kinds of evidence, and they are not equally strong.
The first is the nickname. Tyson says an opponent gave it, at the Council of Antioch as he recalls, and that it appears in the standard church history by Justo González. He reads it as describing a small, dark-skinned African man. He also notes that it was an insult, the kind of thing people throw at someone whose ideas they cannot defeat. Because it comes from hostile sources, it is useful precisely as evidence of how Athanasius looked to his enemies, though it rests on a single recorded jab.
The second is social history. Alexandria had been a Greek port for centuries, with an aristocracy more Greek than African, while the indigenous population was Coptic and dark-skinned. To say Athanasius was Coptic, in Tyson’s words, is to say “he was from the wrong side of the tracks” for someone rising to lead the church.
The third is loyalty. Tyson asks skeptics why Coptic monks, Saint Anthony of the Desert among them, repeatedly came to Alexandria to defend Athanasius and sheltered him in the desert at serious risk to themselves. That evidence is circumstantial. Monks could protect a bishop because they shared his theology, not only his heritage, and a reader should not treat their loyalty as proof of ancestry.
So the honest conclusion comes in layers. That Athanasius was a North African bishop of Alexandria is not in dispute. That he was Coptic and dark-skinned is Tyson’s reading of the evidence, and others contest it. The point that matters most for the white man’s religion charge does not depend on settling it. One of the defining theological fights of early Christianity was led from Africa, and his steadiest defenders were African monks of the Egyptian desert.
He Did Not Live to See 381
Athanasius died of natural causes in 373, Tyson says, “as a very old and worn out man.” The position he defended was not standardized and enforced until 381. For roughly half a century after Nicaea, the question he thought the council had answered stayed open, and he spent that time defending it from exile as often as from his own church.
Tyson compares him to Moses, who led Israel to the edge of the promised land and did not cross over. The comparison fits the chronology. The settlement of 381 was built on arguments Athanasius had made and held through five exiles, and the church that finished the work inherited his reasoning along with his creed. As Tyson puts it, “The work is always bigger than any one person.”
Why Should Christians Today Care?
When Christians confess Jesus as Lord and mean that he is God made flesh, they are using the conclusion Athanasius fought for. The creed came from an Alexandrian church reading John’s Gospel, and an African bishop held onto it through decades of removal and return. A vaguely worded signature would have ended his troubles. He refused it because he judged that vague words about Jesus would leave believers with a Savior who could inspire but could not save.
The best way to test that judgment is to read him. Tyson recommends On the Incarnation, available in a readable edition introduced by C. S. Lewis, as the place to start. It is an argument about who Jesus is and what that means for human hope, written by a man who had already decided it was worth losing his home over. A reader who finishes it can say something specific to the claim that Christianity is a European import: one of the texts that taught the church how to speak about Christ was written by an African bishop of Alexandria.
