Most people do not say it out loud. They think it in the car after the diagnosis, or standing in a kitchen that suddenly feels too quiet, or scrolling past one more headline they cannot un-see. The sentence underneath all of it is short. Where are you, God, and do you even see this?
Here is the honest answer, and it is not the one we reach for first. When life is coming apart, discipleship pastor Kristel Acevedo says the move is not to hurry out of the pain but to sit down in it and bring it to God. She spent years in a wilderness season feeling lost and resentful, until she noticed that John the Baptist grew spiritually strong in the wilderness. God does not just warn us that suffering is coming. He goes in first, and he meets us there. That does not make the falling apart hurt less. It means you are not falling alone.
Why Does My First Instinct Make the Pain Worse?
When life hurts, our reflex is to tidy it up. We sweep the ache under a quick “but God is good all the time” and keep moving, because sitting still with something broken feels dangerous. Acevedo pushes back on that reflex. The healthier first step, she says, is to stop, take an honest audit of what is sad and confusing and infuriating, and actually feel it before you carry it anywhere.
It’s really about pausing and lamenting, taking audit of our world around us, and sitting with that. And then taking that to the Lord and saying, God, what does this mean, and where are you in the midst of it?
— Kristel Acevedo
Someone will object that this sounds like wallowing. If you keep poking the wound, do you not just bleed longer? But lament is not the same as despair. Despair talks to itself. Lament talks to God. Jennifer Lucy Tyler, who teaches on prayer when heaven feels silent, draws the line cleanly.
Biblical lament is lament with hope.
— Jennifer Lucy Tyler
That is the difference. You are not naming the pain to sink into it. You are naming it so you can hand it to someone. The polite version of your prayer, the one with the bow already tied on it, never actually reaches God, because it was never the true thing. Tyler is blunt about how much God can take.
God can handle our questions, our concerns, our fears, and our doubts, our anger.
— Jennifer Lucy Tyler
So the first move is not to fix the falling apart. It is to stop pretending it is not happening, and to say the real sentence out loud to the only one who can do something about it.
Does God Actually See Me When I’m Hurting?
This is where the question gets personal. Not is God real in general, but does God see me, right now, in this. Dieula Previlon spends her work with women who have learned to assume the answer is no. She names the cry underneath their suffering with no decoration on it.
Do you even see me? Do you care?
— Dieula Previlon
Scripture answers that cry in a way that should stop us. In Genesis, Hagar is cast out, pregnant and alone in the desert, and she becomes the first person in the Bible to give God a name. She calls him the God who sees me (Genesis 16:13). Previlon points out that a declaration like that does not come from a comfortable place.
That proclamation does not come out of nothing. She had to be sitting in her own pain.
— Dieula Previlon
The objection here is real. If God sees me, why does the seeing not come with rescue? Why watch and not act? That is honest, and the Bible does not scold it. But notice what Hagar got. Not an exit from the desert. A God who found her in it, and then sustained her through it. The seeing was not a consolation prize for the missing rescue. The seeing was the rescue beginning. Previlon says the response God models, and the one the church owes hurting people, starts in the same place.
It starts with care, tenderness, and grace, the same love that Jesus offers.
— Dieula Previlon
What Makes the Christian Answer to Suffering Different?
Every worldview has to say something about pain. What makes the Christian story land differently, Acevedo argues, is that God did not stay at a safe distance and issue a warning. He came in.
He didn’t just say, you’re gonna have suffering in this world, peace out, good luck. He went first in it, and he has that solidarity with us.
— Kristel Acevedo
Think about what that means at the foot of the cross. The God you are asking your angry question to knows betrayal from the inside. He knows what it is to be abandoned by friends, to sweat under dread, to cry out and feel the sky go quiet. So when you bring him your pain, you are not explaining grief to a stranger. You are bringing it to the one person who has already been all the way down.
Someone will push here too. Solidarity is nice, but solidarity does not pay the rent or bring the person back. A God who suffers with me does not undo my suffering. True. But ask what you would actually trade it for. A God who stayed clean and far off, who could fix things but never came near, would leave you alone with the worst nights of your life. The God of the cross does not promise you will not weep. He promises you will not weep by yourself. Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, puts the intimacy of it plainly (see Psalm 56:8).
He bottles our tears. He is aware of the pain that I’m in, and he cares about the tears that I forget about. You know, laying on your pillow and crying and waking up and forgetting sometimes that you cried yourself to sleep, but the fact that God knows and intimately cares.
— Lisa Fields
Can the Wilderness Actually Be Doing Something Good?
For years after her hard season ended, Acevedo still carried resentment over what felt like wasted time. Then she read Luke 1:80, where John the Baptist grows up in the wilderness and becomes spiritually strong:
“And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel” (Luke 1:80).
It rearranged the whole way she read her own desert.
Wait a minute. You’re telling me that we can go through the wilderness, and we can come out of it spiritually strong?
— Kristel Acevedo
Jesus himself spent forty days in the wilderness before his ministry began (Matthew 4:1–2). The pattern is everywhere in Scripture. The wilderness is not the place God forgets about you. It is often the place he forms you. So instead of scrambling for the nearest exit, Acevedo says you can let the hard season do its work, building what she calls spiritual grit and shaping you into the image of Jesus.
God meets us there, so we can sit in the wilderness instead of trying to get out of it, and allow those challenges to form us.
— Kristel Acevedo
Be careful here, because this is exactly where bad teaching lives. This is not the line that says your pain was sent to teach you a lesson, so cheer up. Acevedo is not saying the suffering is good. She is saying God is not absent from it, and he is not wasting it. There is a difference between God causing your wreckage and God refusing to let your wreckage be the end of the story. Priscilla Shirer, who has walked her own wilderness, describes finding provision that was set out before she ever arrived.
God’s sovereignty is so complete that he’s got wells of water in those wilderness experiences, that he sat there well before I even arrived, knowing that I would need those to sustain me and refresh me even as I walked through it.
— Priscilla Shirer
Why Do I Grow More When Everything Is Falling Apart?
Almost nobody grows on the easy days. Acevedo says the difficult stretches do more in us mostly because they push us past the end of our own strength. Comfort lets us keep believing we are self-sufficient. Suffering exposes that we are not.
If nothing else, we grow more in our reliance on God through our challenges.
— Kristel Acevedo
The danger is leaving that dependence behind the moment things improve. We learn to lean on God in the valley and then drop him at the first sign of a good week. The work is to carry the dependence out with you. And you do not carry it alone. Suffering tempts us to isolate, to decide no one understands and pull the door shut. Dr. Cynthia James names the better way.
I don’t have to suffer alone. There are people I can invite into that space of pain, that space of dire desperation. Their presence is there, and they become a kind of Old Testament paraclete walking through trouble.
— Cynthia James
Where Does Hope Come From When Nothing Has Changed Yet?
Acevedo does not pretend recent years have been anything but brutal, and she is honest that the weight has fallen hardest on communities of color. Her hope is not a slogan you post to feel better. It is a person.
We can’t find hope in anything or anyone else other than Jesus.
— Kristel Acevedo
That sounds like a small thing to offer someone in real pain, until you notice what it frees you to do. Because the source of your hope is fixed and not dependent on your circumstances improving, you are released to be compassionate even before the rescue comes. A God of compassion makes compassionate people. You do not have to wait until you are whole to be kind to someone else who is breaking. That, Acevedo says, is part of how God brings you out of the wilderness with something you could not have gained on the easy road.
Quick Answers
Where is God when my life is falling apart? Acevedo says God is present even when he feels silent. The cross shows a Savior who entered suffering first and meets you inside it rather than watching from a distance.
What is lament, and is it allowed? Lament is pausing to honestly name what is wrong and painful, then bringing it to God instead of rushing past it. Jennifer Lucy Tyler calls it lament with hope. God can handle your questions, your fear and your anger.
Does God actually see me in my pain? Dieula Previlon points to Hagar, who named God the one who sees her from inside the desert. The seeing is real, and it usually comes as God sustaining you through the hard place, not lifting you out of it.
What does the wilderness mean spiritually? A hard, disorienting season. Acevedo points to John the Baptist and Jesus to show God uses the wilderness to form us, not just to test us. This is not the same as saying your suffering is good.
How do I find hope right now, before anything changes? Acevedo says hope is found in Jesus, not in circumstances, and a compassionate God frees us to be compassionate with each other even while we wait.
