A standalone study on how the Black church taught the world to sing hope through sorrow.
The big question
Some of the most beloved music in the world came out of the Black church. Dr. Charlie Dates traces gospel music from African call and response, through the field hollers of slavery, to a grieving man at a Chicago piano. This study asks what it means that a people forged their most hopeful music in their hardest places, and what that teaches us about worship.
Key takeaways
- Gospel music was born in the Black church, largely in Chicago.
- Its roots run through slavery’s spirituals back to the call and response of Africa.
- Thomas Dorsey turned the loss of his wife and child into Precious Lord, Take My Hand.
- Gospel holds sorrow and hope together rather than fleeing pain.
- Dates calls gospel a cognitive force, not merely an emotional one.
Scripture to sit with
Psalm 137:1-4. How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land? The exile’s question the spirituals answered.
Psalm 40:3. He put a new song in my mouth. Worship born out of being lifted from the pit.
James 5:13. Is anyone suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing. Both belong in worship.
Colossians 3:16. Teach and admonish one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Music as instruction, not just feeling.
Quotes worth discussing
Dates says, “Gospel music was born in Chicago.”
On its genius, Dates says, “Hope is found in the very conditions that cause despair.”
On its depth, Dates says gospel is “not simply or merely an emotive response, it’s a cognitive force.”

A closing reflection
Pick one old spiritual or gospel song this week and sit with the words, not just the melody. Notice how it refuses to pretend the pain away and still reaches for God. Let it teach you how to worship in your own hard place.
