Nick Cannon told The Breakfast Club that Christianity is his first language but that he speaks other spiritualities as well. That makes faith sound like a matter of range: learn more languages and you only gain. The Moorish thought he linked to his turban contradicts Christianity at the root. On sin, salvation, the image of God and the identity of Jesus, the two teachings give opposite answers, and no one can hold both at once.
That conclusion comes from Pastor Ernest Cleo Grant II, a pastor in Camden, New Jersey, in a conversation with Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project. Grant goes further than a verdict. He treats Cannon’s remark as one recent example of a pattern with a long history in Black urban religious life. A Christian who wants to answer it well, he argues, has to understand that history before answering the man.
What Exactly Did Cannon Claim?
Very little, and that matters. When Charlamagne asked about the turban, Cannon tied it to the sovereignty of God and to Moorish thought. In Grant’s paraphrase, Cannon said that “Christianity is his first language, but he’s fluent in many other spiritualities.” Grant points out that the remark came between comments about Cannon’s failed marriage and a plug for his headphones. It was a passing clip, and Cannon never explained what fluency in several spiritualities would mean.
Grant is careful about what he can judge. He says he would have loved to hear Cannon explain himself, and he does not claim to know the full content of Cannon’s beliefs. What can be examined is the system Cannon pointed to. Anyone who had worked through that material, Grant argues, would see that “they’re just not congruent views.”
So the honest question is whether the spirituality Cannon named can live alongside the faith he called his first language. Whether Cannon himself is a Christian is a question only a longer conversation could answer.
Where Does the Moorish Language Come From?
Grant traces it to the Moorish Science Temple and its founder, Timothy Drew, who took the name Noble Drew Ali. As Grant tells it, Drew was born in North Carolina in 1886, and the record of his parentage is uncertain. Some accounts say he was the son of former slaves, others that he was adopted by a Moroccan father and a Cherokee mother. The movement’s own story has him travel abroad as a teenager to Egypt, Morocco and the Middle East, where a teacher declared him a prophet in the line of Jesus, Confucius, Buddha and Muhammad.
Out of that came a book Drew Ali called the Holy Koran. Grant stresses that it differs greatly from the Quran of Islam. He describes it as a short book built largely from two earlier works, one of them a text called the Aquarian Gospel. Its central claim about people was that Black Americans are the ancient Moabites and should call themselves Moors. Grant dates the first temple to Newark, New Jersey, around 1913, with the movement later centered in Chicago and growing quickly by 1926. He says Drew Ali died under suspicious circumstances in 1929 with something like 30,000 followers, and that by the 1930s the Nation of Islam had eclipsed the movement. These dates and figures are Grant’s account. He adds that a small Moorish presence remains in cities like Camden and that adherents today hold differing views, so engaging a real person means learning what that person believes.
Why Did a Movement Like This Draw People In?
Grant’s method is to get the setting before judging the teaching. In his words, “We gotta gain the historical context of what he was trying to do.” Drew Ali grew up in the Jim Crow South, where, Grant says, he would have seen lynchings, whippings and the daily mistreatment of Black people. His message answered that degradation directly. He taught that the slave trade had hidden a royal identity, and that Black people descended from kings and queens who conquered Spain. Grant admits he finds that impulse toward Black empowerment sympathetic.
Then came the Great Migration. Grant describes millions of Black Southerners moving north to escape Jim Crow and the boll weevil that wrecked sharecropping. In cities like Chicago, Newark and Harlem they met religious options they had never had: Black Muslims, Black Hebrews, spiritualist leaders who claimed powers of divine healing. Urban churches, Grant says, were filled to capacity and struggling to absorb the newcomers. Some migrants who had relied on the close ties of Southern congregations did not find them in the North. A teacher offering pride, lineage and belonging found a ready audience.
Grant holds both sides of that history together. Drew Ali, he says, “was really trying to empower Blacks, but he was doing it in a theologically and biblically perverse way, making himself a false prophet.”
Fields names the deeper problem with the strategy. Many such movements answer the lie of Black inferiority with a myth of Black superiority. As she puts it, “It’s almost fighting supremacy with supremacy in a sense.” Cannon’s own talk of the Black man as the original man, she observes, comes from the same line of thinking.
What Does the Moorish Text Actually Teach?
Grant reads from the Holy Koran and summarizes its claims. In his account, the book teaches:
- that there is no such thing as sin, and that wrongs are washed away by purity of life
- that heaven is a state of mind, and that there is no heaven or hell
- that humanity was not created in the image of God
- that the only devil to overcome is the lower self, and that a person must look within for salvation
- that Jesus was a student of Hindu scriptures, placed beside Buddha and Confucius and not even ranked as a prophet
Grant calls the result a convoluted worldview. That fits a system that keeps a few Christian names and changes what each of them refers to.
Why Can’t the Two Sit Side by Side?
Some differences between beliefs are matters of emphasis. Others are contradictions. Grant’s test is whether the core claims can both be true, and on the central questions they cannot. “They’re diametrically opposed, one with another,” he says, and he puts the logic in its simplest form: “Either there’s a hell or there’s not. Either Jesus’s blood washes away sin, or it doesn’t.”
Set the Moorish claims next to the biblical text and the conflict is plain. The Moorish book says there is no sin. Paul writes, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The Moorish book says salvation is found by looking within. John writes that “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7), which places rescue outside the self, in what Christ did. The Moorish book makes Jesus one teacher among many. Jesus says of himself:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).
A person can reject that claim. No one can accept it and also file Jesus in a row of sages.
The sharpest contrast concerns human worth, the very thing the movement set out to restore. The Moorish text, as Grant summarizes it, denies that humanity was made in God’s image. Genesis says the opposite:
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Genesis 1:27).
The verse speaks of humanity as a whole, so it grounds dignity in God’s act of creation. The Moabite story asks Black Americans to find their worth in a contested genealogy. Scripture locates that worth somewhere no slave trader could hide and no racist could revoke. A movement born to answer degradation ends up giving away the strongest answer to it.
This is why Cannon’s metaphor fails. In real bilingualism the words of one language leave the other intact. Here the second spirituality redefines the first. If sin is unreal, grace is unnecessary. If salvation is within, the cross is ornament.
Is This a Black Problem?
It would be easy to read the Moorish story and conclude that blended faith is simply what happens in Black neighborhoods. Grant resists that. “What happened with Nick does not happen in a vacuum,” he says, then names it: “It is urban religious syncretism, and there’s a long line of it.” He traces the line from West African religion carried through slavery, through Reconstruction, the Great Migration and the civil rights era, to the present. He also compares it to Gnosticism and to liberal theology, both of which, he argues, borrow words like Christ, redemption and heaven and pour non-biblical meanings into them. The move is old and human, and no ethnic group owns it.
What drives it, in Grant’s reading, is usually something other than doctrine. He names a selective Christology, the instinct he describes this way: “We want the loving Jesus, but we don’t like the one that is bringing judgment and condemnation for sin.” Beneath that preference he often finds a wound. When he asks people why they left the church, the answer is often church hurt: someone disrespected them, called them out of their name or tried to play them. A blended faith can be a way of keeping Jesus while keeping distance from the people who wounded you in his name.
Isn’t Critiquing This Just Dismissing a Response to Racism?
This is the strongest objection, and it deserves a straight answer. The Moorish Science Temple arose among people who had been terrorized and told they were less than human. Its founder offered them a name and a past. Shouldn’t Christians, whose churches sometimes failed those migrants, be slow to criticize?
Grant answers in two steps. He grants the history. He is not defending Drew Ali, but he insists on understanding the conditions that made the teaching attractive. Then he keeps sympathy for the aim separate from the question of truth. A real injury does not make every remedy for it true. The test that applies to any teaching applies here: is it true about God, sin and Jesus?
Grant also points to an inconsistency he meets on the street. Skeptics often dismiss his biblical and historical evidence as the white man’s sources. Yet the Holy Koran of the Moorish Science Temple drew, he says, on works written by two white men. The objection that Christianity is foreign cannot be applied to one tradition and waived for the other. Grant’s own counter is biblical history. He points to the African nations named throughout the Old Testament and to Africans woven into Israel’s story, from Moses’s Cushite wife (Numbers 12:1) to Joseph’s Egyptian marriage (Genesis 41:45). Dignity can rest on that record without needing a myth.
What Should a Christian Do With This?
Grant draws the practical conclusion from the history. Syncretism is old, so a Christian who meets it should expect it and ask before answering. He urges believers to ask clarifying questions instead of rushing to a tidy reply to every accusation. His working questions are simple: What do you mean? Where did you get this? What happened that made you walk away from the church? He often apologizes for Christians who hurt the person in front of him. If he met Cannon, he says, he would call him Mr. Cannon, sit down with him, ask him to explain himself and see whether he knew the movement’s history.
He also lifts a burden many Christians carry. No one needs to master every detail of Moorish origins before talking with a Moor. “The knowledge that I communicate is not what’s bringing them. It’s the Holy Spirit,” Grant says. Knowledge still serves the conversation, and he wants Christians to be solid on Christology, the Trinity and how Scripture came down to us. He pairs that with prayer, pointing to Paul’s request “that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified” (2 Thessalonians 3:1). Sometimes his opening is as plain as this: “Hey, can I take you out for a bite to eat? Can I listen to your story?”
That conversation has a clear target. A blended faith survives as long as its key words stay vague. So the most useful question a Christian can ask a friend who mixes traditions is who gets to define the words. What do you mean by sin? What do you mean by savior? What do you mean by heaven? Each answer will come from one source or the other, and the friend will be the one to see it. Asked over a meal, with patience for the hurt behind the answers, that question does more than any argument to show whether the blend can hold.
