The Unspoken curriculum from Jude 3 Project answers the question of what set American slavery apart with one idea: the chattel principle. American slavery classed African people as property, held them and their children for life, used race as the marker, and left them almost no protection in law. It also grew up inside the nation’s founding story, not at its edges. That matters for faith conversations, because a debate about Bible verses goes badly when nobody agrees on what the institution actually was.
This guide works in a deliberate order: history first, Scripture second. It draws on the chapter One Gospel with Two Faces in the Unspoken curriculum. You can work through it alone in about an hour, or with a group in one longer session. Several sections end with a task, so keep a Bible, paper and a pen nearby.
Two ships, two starting points
The lesson opens with two arrivals a year apart. In 1619 the White Lion landed in Jamestown with the first captive Africans brought to the colony. In 1620 the Mayflower crossed the Atlantic with English families seeking freedom from the Church of England. The curriculum’s interest is memory as much as dates: “Narratives hold persuasive weight.” A story that begins only with the Mayflower makes slavery look like a regrettable exception to a tale of liberty. A story that begins with both ships places slavery in the foundation. The lesson borrows Nikole Hannah-Jones’s observation that slavery and freedom were born at the same time, and it presses the point through Thomas Jefferson, who by the curriculum’s account wrote the Declaration of Independence while owning over 600 enslaved people at Monticello.
The lesson also corrects a common assumption. The Africans who arrived in 1619 were legally listed as servants. Lifelong racial slavery was built afterward, as tobacco became Virginia’s main export and colonists wanted cheap labor. The curriculum says it plainly: “Economics was the initial spark to American slavery.” Over time, it adds, “Enslaved African men, women, and children would come to serve as the overarching financial backbone of the country.”
That sequence suggests the system did not begin as an outgrowth of reading the Bible. Economic motive and theological justification may well have grown together, each reinforcing the other, but the economic need was there from the start. Keeping that order in view helps when someone treats American slavery as a straightforward product of Christian teaching.
Task one. Draw a line down the middle of a page. Label one side 1619 and the other 1620. Under each, write who was on board, why they came, and what their descendants inherited. Then write one sentence about which arrival your schooling taught you first, and what that ordering led you to assume.
What the chattel principle claims
The curriculum names its central feature directly: “Arguably the most appalling distinctive of American slavery was the chattel principle”. Chattel means a personal possession, like livestock or furniture. Frederick Douglass, whom the lesson cites, described being appraised alongside horses, cattle and pigs, with men, women and children ranked with the animals. The lesson also draws on slave narratives describing whippings and names sexual violence as part of the same system, all usually without consequence for the owner.
Drawn from the lesson, the chattel principle combined these features:
- Legal ownership of a person as property, beyond any claim on that person’s labor.
- Race as the marker of who could be enslaved, which the curriculum describes as socially constructed to justify the arrangement.
- Bondage for life that passed to children.
- Capture through kidnapping in the transatlantic trade, making the condition involuntary from the start.
- Virtually no legal protection from harm by the owner.
The curriculum does not claim cruelty to slaves began in America. It points to Hammurabi’s code in ancient Babylon, which by its account permitted and even encouraged serious harm to slaves. What it identifies as distinct is the way these features fit together around a claim about human nature. Its summary states: “American slavery was unique in that it sought to create a myth that people of African descent were subhuman and therefore, could be treated like property.” The lesson adds, citing Adam Coleman in its documentary, that owners also told the enslaved their condition was decreed by God. That claim is where the verses come in.
Testing the features against the law of Moses
Before any verse, the curriculum sets a limit on what a word can prove: “But mere references of slavery do not necessarily reflect the reality slave owners sought to create.” The same English word can describe very different institutions, so the institutions have to be compared feature by feature.
Start with Exodus 21. Verse 2 reads: “If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.” The same chapter puts to death anyone who steals a man and sells him (Exodus 21:16), punishes a master who kills a servant (Exodus 21:20), and frees a servant whose master destroys an eye or a tooth (Exodus 21:26-27). The curriculum notes that Hebrew servitude often began when people sold themselves to pay off debt, and it roots these protections in two convictions: every person bears the image of God, and Israel’s own enslavement in Egypt was a standing reminder of how to treat others.
Then read Leviticus 25:44-46, the text skeptics most often raise. It permits Israelites to buy servants from surrounding nations and hold them permanently, passing them to their children. The curriculum does not hide this. Its footnote says the seventh-year release did not apply to foreign slaves, though regulations still protected their dignity, and it admits that some verses about non-Hebrew slaves “require a more extensive explanation” than the lesson gives. A fair conversation names that passage rather than hoping no one brings it up.
Task two. Copy the five chattel features from the list above down the left side of a page. Make two columns to the right, one for Exodus 21 and one for Leviticus 25:44-46. Read both passages and mark each feature as present, absent, or unclear in each text, noting the verse that decides it. Then write two or three sentences on what the comparison shows and where it leaves you with real questions. Most readers find that Exodus 21 cuts against several features outright, while Leviticus 25 overlaps with at least one and needs further study. Hold both results honestly.
How the enslavers read Paul
Paul’s short letter to Philemon concerns Onesimus, an enslaved man who had become a Christian. The lesson observes that pro-slavery advocates used the letter as propaganda for the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850, which required escaped slaves to be returned to their owners. In the curriculum’s words, “Philemon became an avatar for the modern-day slave owner.”
Yet in Philemon 1:16 Paul asks Philemon to receive Onesimus no longer as a servant but above a servant, as a beloved brother, both in the flesh and in the Lord. The curriculum reads the full letter as implying freedom. Some interpreters read Paul more cautiously, as calling for brotherhood while leaving the legal outcome to Philemon. Even the cautious reading undercuts the pro-slavery use, because Paul sends Onesimus back with a demand that he be received as family, while the Fugitive Slave Law returned people as recovered property.
Galatians 3:28 adds a wider frame: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.” Paul is speaking about standing in Christ, not drafting civil law. Still, a system built on the claim that some people are less than human sits uneasily beside a verse that places the enslaved and the free on the same ground.
Task three. Read all of Philemon aloud. It takes about three minutes. Underline every family word Paul uses, such as brother, son, partner and beloved. Then write two sentences: one describing how a defender of the Fugitive Slave Law would have read the letter, and one naming what in the text resists that reading.
One faith, two faces
The chapter’s title names its main distinction. Enslavers and the enslaved held the same Bible and read it in opposite ways. The lesson cites Douglass’s well-known claim that he saw the widest possible difference between the Christianity of the land and the Christianity of Christ, loving the second and refusing to call the first by that name. It also cites James Pennington, a formerly enslaved minister, who said his whole faith depended on whether the Bible sanctioned slavery, and that if it did, he would need another book. And it points to Dr. Charlie Dates, who argued that enslaved believers showed what authentic Christianity was in ways their masters could not.
These witnesses did not defend the institutions that used Christian language. They judged those institutions by the faith, separating the belief system from the people who exploited its words. A careful reader needs the same distinction today when someone calls Christianity the slave master’s religion.
The history has limits as well. The curriculum speaks of many enslaved Africans finding hope in the God of Exodus; it does not claim all of them did. Black Americans today do not read this history in one voice either. Some come to faith through it, some leave because of it, and many hold real questions in between. A person who rejects Christianity because of slavery is making a serious moral argument and deserves to be answered as one.
A practice: restate before you answer
This practice turns the history into a conversation skill. Do it alone in writing, or in pairs within a group.
- Write the strongest version of the objection in two or three sentences, as someone who holds it would put it. For example: Christians used the Bible to defend owning my ancestors, and the Bible itself mentions slavery without banning it, so why would I trust it?
- Split the objection into parts: historical claims, claims about what the text means, and claims about whether the church can be trusted.
- For each historical part, name what the record in this guide shows, such as the 1619 arrival, the economic origin, the chattel principle, or the use of Philemon.
- For each textual part, name a passage you would read in context, including one that is hard for your own position. Your work in task two will help here.
- Read your restatement to someone who holds the objection, or imagine doing so. If they would not call it fair, revise it before you write any reply.
If you lead a group, give this activity the most time. Some participants carry family histories connected to this material, and the descriptions of violence are heavy. Let people pass on any question. No one should have to share personal or family experience to take part. Keep attention on the sources and the reasoning, not on testing anyone’s loyalty to a position.
Questions for discussion
- When you first learned American history, which ship came first, and what did that ordering lead you to assume about slavery?
- The 1619 Africans were legally listed as servants, and lifelong racial slavery was built afterward. How does that change the way you answer someone who calls American slavery biblical?
- Which chattel feature do you think most clearly separates American slavery from servitude under Exodus 21? Why that one?
- How would you respond to someone who reads Leviticus 25:44-46 aloud, without dodging it or overstating your case?
- Douglass and Pennington judged the slaveholders’ religion by Scripture rather than rejecting Scripture. What did they see that made that possible?
- Where today might people use Christian language to protect power or profit, and what would it take to notice it?
- What part of this history do you still find hardest to reconcile with your faith, and what would help you study it further?
A text to carry out of the room
The curriculum closes its chapter with Isaiah 58, where the prophet describes the worship God wants. Isaiah 58:6 asks, “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”
The enslavers had religious practice and a selection of verses. What they lacked is what Isaiah names. Before your next conversation about slavery and the Bible, ask whether you are ready to start with the history, name the hard text, and let the prophet’s measure judge every system that claims God’s name, including the ones you belong to.
