Yes, the Black church’s survival can point to God’s grace, but only as testimony read in hindsight, never as proof that forces a skeptic’s hand. That is the claim Rev. Dr. W. Franklyn Richardson actually makes. He reads a history he has lived through, his own and his people’s, and finds in it favor nobody earned. Tested for coherence, his reading holds up better than its critics and its admirers usually assume. It also explains two other convictions of his: that justice work is worship, and that being angry with God belongs inside faith.
What Is Being Claimed When Survival Is Called Grace?
Grace, in the ordinary Christian sense, is favor given to someone who did nothing to earn it. An earned gift is a wage. So calling survival grace says two things at once: something good happened, and the people it happened to cannot take full credit for it.
Richardson’s first evidence is his own life. Looking back over more than 50 years of pastoring, he says the dominant theme was that “I had been a recipient of the favor of God.” A high school counselor in Philadelphia told him he was not college material. He flunked out of community college in his first year. Virginia Union University accepted him on a conditional basis, with a year of remediation, because he had graduated high school without learning to read well. He went on to Yale and a doctorate at United Theological Seminary, and later became chairman of Virginia Union’s board, with his signature on every degree the school awards. His summary: “It’s the grace of God.”
He then widens the frame to the institutions that made it possible for Black students “to endure and to overcome and to achieve in the face of systemic racism for 400 years.” He describes the civil rights struggle as uneven but real, concluding that “we have made great progress as a people” in a country whose premise, he says, was built on Black inequality.
There are two ways to turn this into an argument, and they carry very different burdens.
- The strong version: No natural explanation can account for this survival, so God must have intervened. This is an argument from a gap, and it collapses the moment someone offers a plausible human explanation.
- The testimonial version: A person who already trusts God looks back and recognizes his favor in events that, at the time, looked like defeat. The claim is that the history, read honestly, fits the God Christians confess.
Popular talk about the Black church’s survival often slides toward the strong version. Richardson’s own words point to the second.
The Premise People Overlook: Grace Seen Later
Richardson does not say he saw grace while it was happening. In the opening chapter of his book he recounts a time he was disappointed in how God let things unfold. Then, he says, “I look back over my shoulder and I see that it was the grace of God.” About the earlier moment he admits, “I was not aware of it.”
That changes the logic. A claim made in hindsight is an interpretation of a pattern that only became visible later. The fair test is whether it fits the facts better than its rivals and whether it is honest about what it cannot see. Asking it to rule out every other explanation applies a standard it never claimed to meet.
This matters for the most common objection. A skeptic will say the survival Richardson describes has human causes. A pastor told him to apply to Virginia Union. The school chose to take a risk on him. Mentors such as Wyatt Tee Walker, whom Richardson names as Martin Luther King Jr.’s chief of staff, shaped his ministry. Donors kept the college open. Every link in the chain was a person.
All of that is true, and none of it competes with Richardson’s claim. The objection quietly assumes that if people did it, God did not. Richardson’s testimony is crowded with human agents, and he still calls the result grace. Paul does the same, in a verse Richardson echoes:
“But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me” (1 Corinthians 15:10).
Paul names his own labor in the same sentence as grace and treats the labor as something grace produced.
So the choice between human effort and God is a false one. Richardson’s view requires that God works through means: counselors who get it wrong, pastors who get it right, schools that open doors. A skeptic may reject that theological claim. A list of human causes does not refute it.
Doesn’t Calling Survival Grace Make the Suffering Look Good?
This is the strongest objection, and it has two edges. One is survivorship. Stories of endurance are told by those who endured, while millions died enslaved, were lynched or were worn down by poverty and exclusion. If survival signals grace, what does their death signal? The other edge is moral. Speaking of grace inside a history of oppression can sound like making peace with the oppression, as if it were worth it or meant to be.
On the moral edge, Richardson gives no ground. He names racism as ongoing harm: “No one generation can solve or fix the consequences of racism,” and “Its consequences still restrict the progress and prosperity of Black people in America.” Even his own setbacks get a structural diagnosis. The counselor’s verdict was probably accurate, he says, because “they had not prepared me to be college material.” A school system that passed students along without teaching them to read gets no credit in his account. What he calls grace is the door that opened afterward.
On survivorship, his answer is only partial, and it should be said plainly. The word unmerited does real work. If survival was a gift, survivors cannot claim to be better than those who died. That blocks any boast of superiority. It does not answer the harder question underneath. If grace carried some, why did it seem not to carry others? Was God’s favor selective, and if so, on what basis? Richardson does not take up that question in this conversation, and nothing in his testimony settles it. The Christian tradition has long arguments on that point that testimony cannot resolve. What testimony can do is refrain from claiming more than it knows. A person can confess grace in their own life without claiming to know why the same mercy looked different, or looked absent, in someone else’s.
That is a genuine limit on the argument. It means survival can support a believer’s gratitude, but it cannot serve as a general account of where God was in the suffering of every person who did not survive.
Why Does This Argument Turn Justice Into Worship?
Richardson traces his formation to 1967, when he was a student at Virginia Union and King’s leadership was at its height. From that period he came to read the Bible through the lens of equality and social justice. He holds that Jesus was a social justice activist and that “God is on the side of the oppressed.” So he calls the work “the highest form of worship,” aimed at helping “bring the world in line with what I understand Christ and God to want the world to be.”
The connection to grace depends on a premise worth stating openly: favor received places the receiver under obligation to extend it. That is a theological conviction, not a logical entailment. Someone could accept a gift and feel no duty to anyone. Richardson’s view is that this would misunderstand the gift. He applies the premise even to tuition. HBCU graduates who think they paid for their degrees are mistaken, he argues, because donors, churches and grandmothers covered the rest, so graduates owe a debt that is paid forward. He describes his book the same way, as a record left so the next generation can benefit as he benefited from those before him.
Joined to his conviction that God sides with the oppressed, the premise produces his conclusion. If God has shown unearned favor to the oppressed, then working to align the world with God’s purposes for them is a response to that favor, which is what worship is. A reader who rejects either premise will reject the conclusion. A reader who accepts both will find it hard to treat justice work as optional.
Does this turn the gospel into a political program? The worry is fair. Notice the qualifier in his sentence: “what I understand Christ and God to want.” The standard he appeals to is God’s will, which can judge any movement, including the ones he supports. A reader can still dispute how he applies that standard in a given case, but the claim itself puts God’s purposes ahead of political strategy.
His counsel to young activists shows the same ordering. He tells them, “Don’t internalize your anger because that will defeat you,” and points to King’s insistence on acting in love even toward the person blocking your progress. Love, in his account, protects the activist from being hollowed out by hate. On persistence he is blunt: “We get tired, but we don’t quit.” Over his life, he says, he has won and lost, but “I’ve never been defeated.”
That last line distinguishes losing from being defeated, and the distinction needs a premise to hold. Richardson describes the cause as one that began before today’s activists were born and will continue after they are gone, with somebody else picking up the fight. If the work belongs to God and spans generations, then a single loss is not the final word on it. Without that premise, a lifetime of losses would simply be defeat. With it, losing a battle and being defeated come apart.
Why Does Honest Doubt Belong Inside This Kind of Faith?
Richardson opened his book with a chapter titled “Mad at God.” His grandmother had told him his whole life never to question God. He does not dismiss her. He says “she had authentic faith.” But he reached a different conclusion: when you have a question or a frustration, “the only one who can answer is God.” From there, he says, “we don’t have to protect God, and we don’t have to hide God from our questions.” His fullest statement: “God is big enough to handle our questions, to handle our doubts, and to speak to our needs.”
This follows from the overlooked premise. If grace is often recognized only in hindsight, there will be stretches where the present looks like abandonment. A faith that forbids questions during those stretches asks people to report a confidence they do not have. A faith that allows them lets people stay honest until the pattern becomes visible, if it does. Questions brought to God also keep the relationship going through those stretches rather than suspending it.
Scripture models this. The psalmist does not wait for clarity before he speaks:
“How long wilt thou forget me, O LORD? for ever? how long wilt thou hide thy face from me?” (Psalm 13:1).
This is poetry, which gives voice to experience rather than laying out doctrine, but it is prayer addressed to God inside the book of faith.
Doubt also has an evidential side. A testimony that admits seasons of anger is more credible than one that reports only steady trust. When Richardson says his walk with God “has not been without question,” he is showing that his witness to grace survived facts that might have overturned it.
Where the Argument Stops
Richardson’s handling of the pandemic shows how carefully he holds his own claim. When it delayed his book, he added an epilogue. He did not announce that the pandemic was grace. He asked, “Could it be that the pandemic was an exercise of God’s grace?” He pointed to what the crisis exposed, including deep inequality and the walls between nations, classes and races, which he calls social constructions. He pointed to the compassion it drew out, from health care workers to institutions feeding the hungry. Then he left the decisive question open: whether we will “start over or will we start again.”
That restraint marks the boundary of the whole argument. A history of endurance amid real and continuing injustice can be read coherently as the work of a gracious God acting through human means. That reading cannot prove God to someone outside faith, cannot explain why mercy seemed to reach some and not others, and does not make the suffering good.
What it can do is make its claim checkable in practice. If grace is favor that obligates the one who receives it, then a community’s witness to grace is measured by whether it carries others the way it says it was carried. Richardson’s tuition debt that can only be paid forward, his book written for the next generation, and his insistence that someone else will pick up the fight all point the same way. Grace talk that produces no such action leaves the observer nothing to examine. Grace talk that does is the one form of the argument an outsider can watch being tested.
