Say the Black church out loud and a picture arrives before you finish the phrase. A choir in robes. A march. One particular sanctuary with one particular pastor, maybe the church you grew up in or the one you left. Each picture is real. The trouble starts when one of them stands in for the whole.
Dr. CJ Rhodes, who has pastored Mount Helm Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi, since 2010, gives a definition that is easy to remember: “The Black church is sociological and theological shorthand for a very diverse community of Black folks who believe in Jesus.” The important word is shorthand. The phrase squeezes many denominations and congregations, with real disagreements about doctrine, into two words. What lets those words mean anything is a shared story, not one shared denominational confession.
Why Does Everyone’s Picture Look a Little Different?
Most of us learned the phrase from one place. Rhodes names the habit directly: “When we say the Black church, we’re oftentimes narrowing our focus unwittingly on one particular tradition.” Your local church, your denomination, the worship you knew as a child. None of that is wrong. It is just smaller than the phrase.
Lisa Fields, founder of the Jude 3 Project, notices that almost everyone will say the Black church is not a monolith, and yet “oftentimes when we talk about it, we talk about it as if it is a monolith.” The people who do this are rarely careless. A single picture is easier to argue about than dozens of different churches, and it is especially handy for criticism. Sentences like “the Black church is dead” or “the Black church has failed” only work if there is one thing to be dead or to fail. Once you remember the phrase is shorthand, those sentences sound unfinished. Dead where? Failed at what?
So whatever you picture when you hear the phrase, it is probably accurate and partial at once.
If There Is No Single Creed, What Holds It Together?
Rhodes answers with history: “The Black church has its roots in Africa and has a shared history regarding American slavery and segregation.” Congregations hold different beliefs about worship, doctrine and church government, and behind all of them sits the same origin story of Africa, enslavement and segregation.
He also names how those churches answered that history. Borrowing another scholar’s description, he speaks of a shared witness that looked to Scripture “to give a defense of our humanity” in the face of Jim Crow and white supremacy. The tie, then, goes deeper than suffering the same things. These churches answered dehumanization with the same book that others were misusing against them. A community told it was less than human could open to Genesis and find a claim about all humanity that no slaveholder’s reading could narrow:
“So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them” (Genesis 1:27).
Notice how much and how little the definition commits to. Rhodes’s sentence ends with “believe in Jesus.” Faith in Christ is the common confession. After that come baptism, who may preach and how salvation is received, and that is where the family starts arguing.
How Different Are the Churches Inside the Phrase?
More different than most outsiders expect, and the differences go to the core.
Rhodes lists the fault lines from experience. How to interpret Scripture. Whether women may be ordained. How spiritual gifts work. What music and instruments belong in worship. Whether a person is saved by confession of faith alone or by confession plus baptism. Whether baptism must be in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost, or in the name of Jesus. Whether to pour or immerse, and whether to baptize infants. He calls these “very profound” debates.
One story makes the point better than the list. As a freshman at Ole Miss, Rhodes watched a Church of God in Christ student and an Apostolic student nearly come to blows over who truly had the Holy Ghost. The dispute was the baptismal formula, Trinitarian name versus Jesus name only. They nearly fought, he says, because “they believed the doctrine that much.”
Fields saw the same thing from the inside. Her childhood church had a pastor who came out of the Church of God in Christ, and she grew up hearing that Baptists were not saved because they lacked the Holy Spirit and needed to be filled before they could reach heaven. A Baptist church downtown, just as large, would have seen it very differently. Two Black churches in one city, both full on Sunday, divided on who is saved. She adds that some people still believe this.
Rhodes’s image for all of it: “It’s more like Baskin-Robbins 31 flavors than this is just Neapolitan.”
Why the Beliefs Explain the Churches
It would be easy to treat these disputes as internal squabbling that serious observers can skip. Rhodes argues the opposite. Much of the scholarship on the Black church, he says, has used social science methods, studying trends, history and politics while rarely looking closely at what congregations believe. Some academics go further and explain away the faith of ordinary members as compensation for something else.
His verdict is sharp: “Any group of scholars that wants to evade those matters are missing actually, I would say probably 70% of what has made various Black denominations and local churches unique.” The figure is his own estimate, a judgment rather than a measured statistic, but the point stands without it.
Belief drives action. The doctrinal tensions, Rhodes argues, “are actually what give rise to how the Black church then does charity, does justice, engages in community development.” He mentions a pastor in the PBS documentary on the Black church who described herself as a pastor rather than an activist. Her presence in the streets grew out of how she understood pastoral care. The older scholarly picture of churches majoring in charity, justice, spiritual formation or evangelism makes the same point. Those emphases usually trace back to what a congregation believes the church is for. Take the theology out and you can describe what a church does without knowing why.
What Goes Wrong When We Flatten It?
The cost is simple to state. As Fields puts it, “if you don’t understand the doctrinal difference, you will romanticize or demonize” the Black church. Both moves treat a varied family of churches as one block, then praise or condemn the block.
The romantic version looks backward. Rhodes describes a habit of dividing Black church history into before King and after King: a faithful church in the 1950s and 1960s that lost its way after the assassination. He calls that account historically and experientially inaccurate, and his reasons are specific. By his account, Joseph H. Jackson, then president of the National Baptist Convention, opposed King’s nonviolent direct action, a conflict that contributed to the split forming the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Rhodes also says only about 3 percent of Black churches were actively on the front lines of marching. Some believed the church should stay out of politics because this world was not their home. Others housed and fed freedom riders while deciding they could not risk jobs and lives in public protest during a season of church bombings and assassinations. These are Rhodes’s historical claims, and they describe a church arguing with itself about how to be faithful, not one marching in step.
The demonizing version looks at the present. Told that the Black church is dying, Fields asks which Black churches people are leaving, and why those in particular. One person leaves a Pentecostal church as too emotional. Another leaves a Baptist church as too legalistic. Generalizing is easy, she says, and nuance is hard to write.
Rhodes, drawing on conversations with young people as a pastor and as chaplain at Alcorn State University, offers a hunch he openly labels a hunch. What he hears most often is churches stuck in the 1970s, unaccountable pastors, silenced abuse and preaching that offered emotion without teaching. Those are four different problems with four different remedies. “The medical doctor doesn’t give the prescription before knowing the diagnosis,” he says. A single picture of the Black church produces a single prescription, wrong for most of the patients.
So Should We Stop Saying “The Black Church” at All?
This is the strongest objection. If the churches disagree on who is saved, and their histories and priorities diverge this far, maybe the phrase hides more than it shows. Rhodes himself notes that some more recent scholars argue there is no such thing as the Black church, only Black churches.
He takes the challenge seriously. He agrees that differences among Black Baptists, Black Presbyterians and Black Pentecostals, along with regional, cultural and generational differences, deserve far more attention than they get. Yet he keeps the phrase, and his definition is built to survive the objection because it admits up front that the phrase is shorthand. Shorthand works as long as you remember what it stands for.
The shared story is real. A common origin in Africa, a common experience of slavery and segregation, and a common habit of answering dehumanization with Scripture bind these churches even when they disagree sharply. Dropping the phrase would hide that connection as surely as careless use hides the differences.
Taking the disagreements seriously also honors the tradition rather than threatening it. Rhodes reminds his listeners that “doctrine just means teaching,” and people want to know that what they are taught is true. He points to Paul’s hope in Ephesians that the body would grow to maturity. In that passage Paul describes gifts Christ gives to build up the church, and he names the goal:
“Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ” (Ephesians 4:13).
The word till matters. Paul treats unity of the faith as a destination the church is still moving toward, measured by Christ rather than by any one congregation’s habits. Honest disagreement held under Christ is a different thing from having no common faith.
Back to the Pictures
Go back to the images from the start. The choir in robes is real, and it belongs to some congregations with their own convictions about worship and music. The march is real too, though by Rhodes’s account it involved a small share of churches while others fed the marchers and still others thought the whole thing was a mistake. And the sanctuary you grew up in, or left, was one flavor out of many. Its doctrine was probably argued over by the church across town.
None of the pictures has to be thrown away. Each one just loses its claim to be the whole. When someone says the Black church is dying, or was once glorious, or has failed a generation, the honest response is to ask which church, what belief and what evidence. When you try to understand any particular Black church, start with what it teaches, because that is usually where its charity, its justice work and its Sunday habits come from.
Rhodes’s closing line holds both halves together: “We’re not a monolith, but we are majestic.” Without the first half, admiration turns into myth. Without the second, honesty about differences turns into dismissal. The phrase is worth keeping because it can carry both: a people with one story and many convictions, still arguing over how to follow the same Lord faithfully.
