The blog makes the argument. This study is for letting it change how you show up. It is not a quiz on fatherlessness and it is not a guilt trip. It is a practice. Some of you carry a father wound into this. Some of you are the present parent doing the work of two. Some of you are the steady adult a kid is quietly watching. All three of you have something to do here.
Go slow. Do it alone with a journal, or out loud with a group over four sittings.
Session 1: Say the true thing about the word Father
Read Psalm 68:5 out loud, slowly: “A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling.” Sit with the fact that God names himself by the exact role some people never had. He does not avoid the word. He claims it on purpose, and he claims it pointed straight at the people the word failed.
Then read Psalm 68:5 a second time and ask what it would mean for that to be true of you, not just true in general.
This is worth slowing down on, because the word does heavy lifting in the faith and not everyone hears it the same way. Two people can sing the same line about God the Father and feel two opposite things. One feels welcomed. One braces. Both are in your church. The goal of this session is not to fix the feeling but to bring it honestly to the God who chose the word anyway.
- Journal: When you hear “God the Father,” what is the first picture or feeling that comes up? Write the real one, not the church-correct one.
- Journal: If that word carries a wound, write one honest sentence to God about it. He put lament in the Bible. He can take yours.
- Journal: If that word carries warmth, name the person who gave it to you, and thank God for them.
Session 2: See how faith is meant to travel
Read Deuteronomy 6:6-7. Notice that faith is not assumed to pass on by accident. It is handed down on purpose, in ordinary life, sitting at home and walking on the road. Now read Malachi 4:6, the promise that God turns the hearts of fathers to their children and children to their fathers. The hand-off and the heart-turn go together.
Alycia Wood says it lands somewhere specific: “It's really hard to talk to somebody about a loving heavenly Father if you don't know what a loving father is.” The first picture of God a child gets is usually a person.
Sit with what that means for how we hand faith down. We tend to think we pass on belief by explaining it well. Deuteronomy says we pass it on by living near each other while we believe, at the table and on the road. The lesson is the life. That is good news and a weight at the same time. It means you do not have to be a theologian to disciple a child. It also means a child is learning who God is from how you live whether you meant to teach them or not.
- Discuss or journal: Who handed faith to you, by blood or otherwise? What did they do, not just say, that made it stick?
- Discuss or journal: Read Malachi 4:6. Whose heart in your family or church needs turning toward whom? What is one small turn you could make this week?
- Discuss or journal: Louis Fields says, “It's not what you say, it's what you do. It's how you live before them.” What is a young person catching from watching you, on the boring Tuesdays?
Session 3: A practice for this week, be the chair
The blog calls the absent father an empty chair, and says the God who calls himself Father has a history of sitting down in the chairs nobody else would. This week, you sit down in one.
Pick one young person who is short a steady, godly presence. Not to fix them. Just to be present. Then do these, one each, across the week:
- Show up once, in person or by call, with no agenda. Ask how they are and actually wait for the answer.
- Keep one small promise to them, on time. Small and kept beats big and late. That is how a child learns the word faithful.
- If you have wronged a child in your life, repent to them out loud. Louis Fields calls the apology “the sun and the water needed to make that seed grow.” Do not explain it away. Just own it.
- At the end of the week, name one place you saw God being a father to the fatherless through ordinary people, maybe including you.
If you are the one carrying a home alone, the practice is different and just as real: this week, name one godly person you will let closer to your kids, and ask them. You are not failing by needing the body of Christ. That is the body working right.
Session 4: Hold the hard thing honestly
Wood reads research showing children without a father in the home face higher rates of real hardship, and she will not pretend that is a neutral detail. She also refuses to weaponize it. She was raised by a single mother and honors her. Hold both.
Read Psalm 68:5 one more time, then James 1:27, on caring for the fatherless and the widow. The Bible's response to fatherlessness is not blame. It is a community that closes the gap.
- Discuss: How does your church honor single mothers out loud while still calling men into deeper responsibility? Where does it do one and drop the other?
- Discuss: Natasha Sistrunk Robinson says, “Youth don't take themselves to church. If the youth are leaving, the adults are leaving too.” Which adults has your church stopped pursuing? What would it take to go get them?
- Self-examination: Where have you used a true statistic to club a family instead of love a child? Confess it and let it go.
Leader notes
- Expect tears in Session 1. The word Father is not abstract for everyone in the room. Do not rush anyone to resolution. Let silence be okay.
- If a single parent is present, watch the room in Session 4. Make sure the conversation lands as “the church owes you backup,” never as “you are the problem.” Say that out loud if you have to.
- The Session 3 practice is the heart of the study. Open the next gathering by asking who they showed up for. Accountability is the formation.
- If someone names abuse or ongoing harm from a parent, do not treat it as a discussion point. Follow up privately and point them to real help. A pastoral conversation and, where there is danger, the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 and the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline are there for exactly this.
A blessing to close
May you trust the Father who claimed your empty chairs before you ever asked him to.
May you become, for one watching child, the steady presence that makes the word believable.
And when you cannot be everything they need, may you trust the God who is a father to the fatherless to be the rest.
